SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:The lectureship is named in honor of the late Donald L. Katz who was a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan for many years. Dr. Katz was an inspiring teacher\, outstanding leader and imaginative investigator in the field of Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Technology.\n\nThis event is open to all U-M faculty\, students and staff.\n\nSpeaker bio:\nEnrique Iglesia is a Distinguished Professor and the Vermeulen Chair at the University of California at Berkeley. He holds degrees from Princeton and Stanford and doctor honoris causa from the Universidad Politecnica-Valencia and the Technical University-Munich. His research addresses the synthesis and structural/functional assessment of solids as catalysts for the production and use of energy carriers and chemicals with minimal environmental footprints. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and the National Academy of Inventors. He has been recognized by ACS (Olah\, Somorjai\, Murphree awards)\, AIChE (Wilhelm\, Alpha Chi Sigma\, Walker awards)\, and chemical and catalysis societies worldwide (Emmett\, Burwell\, Boudart\, Distinguished Service awards\; Gault and Cross Canada Lectureships). He received the ENI Energy Prize\, the Kozo Tanabe Prize\, and the International Natural Gas Conversion Award. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Catalysis and President of the North American Catalysis Society. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CAS 2023 International Graduate Student Workshop | The Quotidian and the Divine: Early Modern Gendered Economies of Monasticism in the Eastern Christian World
DESCRIPTION:Over the decades\, the Center for Armenian Studies at U-M has fostered a critical dialogue with graduate students around the globe through our annual graduate student workshops. Together with our faculty\, graduate students\, visiting and post-doctoral fellows we have pushed scholarship in Armenian Studies in new directions through our collective efforts. Our interventions in the study of Armenian history\, literature\, translation studies\, materiality and the visual arts can be gauged by a carefully curated set of initiatives we have undertaken that will have a long-term impact on the field. The Twelfth Annual International Graduate Student Workshop is a great opportunity to bring together a wide range of disciplines that have engaged closely or obliquely with Christian monasticism.\n\nScholars of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East have highlighted the complexities of cultural and social life in the empire’s provinces\, yet monasticism and monastic life as a social institution remain unstudied. Monasteries have been explored as sites of state cooperation and their leaders as agents of the state\, but how can a focus on the social and economic life of monasteries critically reassess themes such as piety\, community\, and empire?\n\nThe church was a critical institution for the physical and spiritual livelihood of Armenians and other Eastern Christian communities. Monasticism existed interdependent of the church\; monks and nuns sustained the church’s labor as spiritual shepherds of their communities and served as material stewards of the land and holy spaces. Gendered aspects of monastic life\, including the protocols of sexual and spiritual discipline that shaped intimacy and religious life (e.g.\, celibacy)\, offer rich vantage points through which the social fabric of confessional communities comes into view. DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Error bound characterizations of conical constraint qualification in convex programming
DESCRIPTION:This talk deals with error bound characterizations of the conical constraint qualification (CCQ) for convex inequality systems in a Banach space. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed convex set defined by a convex function to have CCQ. We show that these characterizations only take place in certain very specific situations.\n\nWe give technical examples showing that these characterizations are limited to these ones. We introduce a new condition in terms of the gauge function which allows us to give an error bound characterization of convex nondifferentiable systems and to obtain as a direct consequence different characterizations of the concept of the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP) for a finite collection of convex sets.\n\nThis is based on the joint work with A. Barbara.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colluding Against Environmental Regulation
DESCRIPTION:We study collusion among firms against imperfectly monitored environmental regulation. Firms increase variable profits by violating regulation and reduce expected noncompliance penalties by violating jointly. We consider a case of three German automakers colluding to reduce the effectiveness of emission control technology. By estimating a structural model of the European automobile industry from 2007 to 2018\, we find that the collusion lowers expected noncompliance penalties substantially and increases buyer and producer surplus. Welfare decreases by € 0.73–2.51 billion because of increased pollution. We show how environmental policy design and antitrust play complementary roles in preventing noncompliance.

DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We introduce the concept of pattern graphs--directed acyclic graphs representing how response patterns are associated. A pattern graph represents an identifying restriction that is nonparametrically identified/saturated and is often a missing not at random restriction. We introduce a selection model and a pattern mixture model formulation using the pattern graphs and show that they are equivalent. A pattern graph leads to an inverse probability weighting estimator as well as an imputation-based estimator. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

The winner of a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship\, the 2013 Sylvia Goldstein Award from Copland House\, and the 2013 Arts & Letters Award from the American Academy\, Mr. Cipullo has received commissions from Music of Remembrance\, SongFest\, Joy in Singing\, the Cecilia Chorus\, the New York Festival of Song\, the Mirror Visions Ensemble\, Sequitur\, Cantori New York\, tenor Paul Sperry\, mezzo-soprano Mary Ann Hart\, the Five Boroughs Music Festival\, pianist Jeanne Golan\, soprano Martha Guth\, soprano Hope Hudson\, the Walt Whitman Project\, baritone Jesse Blumberg\, and many others. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Synthetic Developmental Biology: Cross-species Comparison and Manipulation of Organiods( VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: While mechanisms of embryonic development are well conserved among mammals\, the progression speed tends to be slower in larger species. To study differences in time between species\, my group uses in vitro systems. We have recently recapitulated the segmentation clock\, oscillatory gene expression during early development\, from human and mouse pluripotent stem cells. The oscillation period of the human segmentation clock is 5-6 hours\, while the mouse period is 2-3 hours. We found that this period difference between species stems from slower biochemical reactions in human cells\, including slower protein degradation and longer delays in gene expression processes. Now we are extending this approach of cross-species comparison to other mammalian species\, including the marmoset and rhinoceros\, and other developmental processes. In parallel\, we develop genetic tools to manipulate developmental processes and organoids.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. From the “Bloody Crown” to space travel: Comparing the social imaginaries of Malay and English language novels in Brunei Darussalam
DESCRIPTION:The first Malay language novel in Brunei can be traced back to 1951. Despite a high level of literacy and widespread proficiency in English\, it was only in 2009 that the first Bruneian novel in English was published. This lecture will offer a brief overview of Bruneian literature from its origins to the present\, exploring the different literary and development trajectories taken by Malay language and Anglophone literature in Brunei. Using Driscoll\, Fletcher\, and Wilkins’ notion of genre worlds (2022) to map out the social\, textual\, and industrial conventions that govern the production of literature in Brunei\, this lecture will then offer some reflections on how contemporary Bruneian novels in Malay and English have developed diverging social imaginaries about Bruneian identity. \n\nIn particular\, this lecture will consider how contemporary literature in Malay and English has been influenced by an awareness of representations of Brunei from outside the country and discuss the various narrative and paratextual tactics that have been employed in engagement with the claims of the global imaginary.  \n\nSpeaker Bio:\nKathrina Mohd Daud is an assistant professor in creative writing and literature in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences\, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She holds a PhD in creative writing from the University of Manchester (2011)\, and her research focuses on the intersections of popular fiction\, Bruneian fiction\, and representations of religion in literature. She co-edited T*he Southeast Asian Woman Writes Back: Gender\, Identity and Nation in the Literatures of Brunei Darussalam\, Malaysia\, Indonesia and the Philippines* (Springer\, 2017)\, and her work has appeared in volumes published by Routledge and Springer\, as well as in the Journal of Commonwealth Literature and World Englishes. Her debut novel\, T*he Fisherman King* (2020)\, was shortlisted for the 2020 Epigram Books Fiction Prize. DESCRIPTION:This Flash Talk centers on a small handful of Arabic documents from Michigan's excavations at Karanis preserved in U-M's Bentley Historical Library. The texts open a rare window into the socioeconomic life of the Egyptian laborers employed by Michigan in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of these workers were not Fayum locals but were instead migrants from the town of Qift some 300 miles south\, where they had acquired considerable archaeological expertise on digs led by the famous British Egyptologist William Flinders Petrie. These documents thus shed light on Michigan's dependence on the networks of labor and expertise created by European colonialism in Egypt\, and hint at some of the difficulties these migrant laborers faced when far from home.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. DESCRIPTION:Speakers:  \n\nKimberly Ransom\, PhD (MSP18) Illinois Distinguished Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Education\n\nPelle Tracey (MSP21) PhD candidate at the UM School of Information\n\nChicago's Rebuild Foundation's Stony Island Arts Bank\n(Kimberly Ransom)\nWhile interning at Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank (SAB) in Chicago\, Kimberly Ransom has reviewed the objects and documents in the Ed Williams Black Memorabilia Collection to help Rebuild Artist-Fellows learn how to engage and use the archive as data to inspire and create new art. As an interdisciplinary historian\, Kimberly has also leveraged the collection to further her research and public-facing scholarship. Specifically\, she has examined a collection of early 20 th century postcards with malicious depictions of Black children. Kimberly aims to use the collection to create a counter-narrative of historical photographs that benevolently depict Black children in and around schools on Chicago’s Southside\, visually positioning them as possessors of childhood in the public imagination. In her presentation\, Kimberly will discuss her experience and how community museums and archives can expand historical scholarship toward community art and action.\n\n\nThe Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art\n(Pelle Tracey)\nIn the summer of 2022\, Pelle Tracey interned at the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art under the supervision of Assistant Curator Alex Klein. In this presentation\, Pelle will describe two of the main projects he pursued: archiving a recent long-term collaboration between the ICA and the Dakar\, Senegal-based art institution RAW Material Company\, and conducting oral history interviews with Los Angeles artist Carl Cheng. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Buahit Serit Rock Art and other Archaeological Sites along the Blue Nile Valley of Ethiopia
DESCRIPTION:This work presents previously unknown rock art along the Blue Nile\, on the walls of the Buahit Serit gorge in Northwestern Ethiopia. Although Ethiopia has the largest number of rock art sites in the Horn of Africa\, Buahit Serit is the first documented rock art site in Northwestern Ethiopia. The rock paintings display hunting\, herding\, and geometric representations\, based on a comparison of the motifs and painting style\, the site dated relative to the late Holocene (1000 BCE–1000 CE). Further interpretation introduces the idea that some geometric designs may represent stylized headdresses\, suggesting cultural continuity with living pastoralists. Complementary survey in this region indicates a potential settlement\, burial site\, iron slags\, and lithic concentrations. Unfortunately\, today the Buahit Serit rock paintings\, like many Ethiopian rock art sites\, are endangered due to anthropogenic and natural causes.

DESCRIPTION:People often want to lead more from wherever they “sit” in organizations. Companies also often say that they want more leadership from more places in their organization\, but we’ve historically done little research to understand what might prompt more people to engage in such leadership\, what deterrents they might face in doing so\, and what processes are involved in bringing it about. This talk describes a 15-year journey into exploring these questions. In the talk I will pause to consider notable “sights” along the journey’s path (e.g.\, critical constructs and several studies). I will also identify lessons learned and possibilities for future research as I (and hopefully others) continue a journey of discovery regarding this important topic.

DESCRIPTION:We introduce and characterize inertial updating of beliefs. Under inertial updating\, a decision maker (DM) chooses a belief that minimizes the subjective distance between their prior belief and the set of beliefs consistent with the observed event. Importantly\, by varying the subjective notion of distance\, inertial updating provides a unifying framework that nests three different types of belief updating: (i) Bayesian updating\, (ii) non-Bayesian updating rules such as the α−β rule (Grether\, 1980)\, and (iii) updating rules for events with zero probability\, like the conditional probability system (CPS) of Myerson (1986a\,b). We demonstrate that our model is behaviorally equivalent to the Hypothesis Testing model (HT) of Ortoleva (2012)\, clarifying the connection between HT and CPS. We apply our model to a persuasion game.

DESCRIPTION:Title: “The Toxic Ideology of Longtermism” \n\nAbstract: \nThis lecture criticizes the intellectual tradition “longtermism” as an ideology\, for its damaging real-world effects as well as for its reliance on a flawed ethical theory. Longtermism is an outgrowth of Effective Altruism (EA)\, a utilitarianism-inspired philanthropic program founded just over a decade ago by young Oxford philosophers Toby Ord and William MacAskill. EA\, which claims to guide charitable giving to do the ‘most good’ per expenditure of time or money\, originally focused on mitigating the effects of poverty in the global South and of the treatment of animals in factory farms. This initially modestly-funded\, Oxford-based enterprise soon had satellites in the UK\, US\, and elsewhere in the world\, several of which became multi-million-dollar organisations\, while the amount of money directed by EA-affiliated groups swelled to over four hundred million dollars annually\, with pledges in the tens of billions. During this period\, Ord and MacAskill started using the term ‘longtermism’ to mark a view championed by members of a conspicuous subset of effective altruists. The view is that humanity is at a crossroads at which we may either self-destruct or realize a glorious future\, and that we should prioritize responding to threats to the continued existence of human civilization. The ‘existential risks’ that longtermists rank as most probable are AI unaligned with liberal values and deadly engineered pathogens. They urge us to combat these risks to make it likelier that humans (or our digitally intelligent descendants) will live on for millions\, billions\, or even trillions of years\, surviving until long after the sun has vaporised the earth by colonizing exoplanets. The longtermist enterprise has been publicly thrashed for its ties to the crypto exchange FTX\, which declared bankruptcy in mid-November 2022\, but the movement remains well-funded and well-positioned to repair its reputation and go on enlisting earnest individuals to energetically support and spread it. There is a pressing need to criticize its theoretical weaknesses and forcefully bring out its material harms\, exposing it as the toxic ideology it is.

DESCRIPTION:The SL(3) web basis is a special basis of certain spaces of tensor invariants developed in the late 90's by Khovanov and Kuperberg as a tool for computing quantum link invariants. Since then this basis has found connections and applications to cluster algebras\, canonical bases\, dimer models\, and tableau combinatorics. The main open problem has remained: how to find a basis replicating the desirable properties of this basis for SL(4) and beyond? I will describe joint work with Oliver Pechenik\, Stephan Pfannerer\, Jessica Striker\, and Josh Swanson in which we construct such a basis for SL(4). Modified versions of plabic graphs and the six-vertex model and new tableau combinatorics will appear along the way\, but knowledge of these topics won't be assumed in the talk.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Top Down Topological Holography and Twists on Twistor Space
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss recent work in collaboration with Kevin Costello and Atul Sharma. Aspects of the holographic correspondence can be understood mathematically through a framework called twisted holography\, which has been applied to AdS/CFT to compute certain protected correlators. In this talk we will apply these ideas to describe a new holographic duality for a bulk theory in an asymptotically flat spacetime which arises from studying twisted holography on twistor space. The ``boundary'' 2d chiral algebra\, which is dual to the algebra of bulk asymptotic symmetries\, can be described using a mathematical technique called Koszul duality. Alternatively\, the 4d and 2d theories are independently defined from top-down string theoretic reasoning\, and we match OPEs with collinear limits of scattering amplitudes in the planar limit as a check.

DESCRIPTION:In geometric Langlands\, you start with a curve X\, and try to put into correspondence two very different-looking entities:  Local systems of rank n on X on the one hand\, and Hecke eigensheaves on Bun_n(X) on the other.  In the recent work of Fargues-Scholze\, there is a beautiful conjectural extension of this story to the p-adic setting.  In that setting\, the role of X is played by the Fargues-Fontaine curve\, and the local systems are Galois representations.   \n\nThe conjecture of Fargues-Scholze has impressive explanatory power when it comes to the local Langlands program.  For instance\, it implies all cases of the Kottwitz conjecture on the cohomology of local shtuka spaces.   We only know certain cases of that conjecture\, notably for the Lubin-Tate tower (Harris-Taylor).  We will discuss work with Hansen and Kaletha detailing partial results on the Kottwitz conjecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Grad Seminar: Nonlinear Model for the Mechanics and Dynamics of Cochlear Outer Hair Cell Stereocilia
DESCRIPTION:Sound waves vibrating the eardrum excite the ossicles in the middle ear ultimately driving waves in the cochlea. Cochlear vibrations are processed by inner hair cells and outer hair cells (OHCs). Our focus is on the OHCs that nonlinearly amplify the sound converting a time-varying motion of its apically adorned hair bundle (HB) to an alternating current.  The OHC HB consists of roughly three rows of stereocilia arranged according to their heights. Understanding how the bundle stiffness\, sensitivity\, and transduction current depend on the physiology and anatomy of the stereocilia is crucial and an open question. Therefore\, we are developing a three-row model of an isolated HB to quantify each row’s contribution to the passive and active mechanics of the HB. The derived equations of motion include the nonlinear kinematics\, viscoelastic HB mechanics\, and the nonlinear response of the mechano-electric transducer channels coupled to an adaptation mechanism. We also linearize the model to conduct stability analysis and determine the dependence of the responses on the rate constants. Our preliminary results show a higher current influx through the middle row than the shortest row and closely predicts the biophysical parameters like the sensitivity and stiffness of the bundle.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Trautmann Honorary Lecture | Bhoja Among the Gonds: Place\, Memory and the Afterlives of Kingship in Medieval India
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will consider the social memory of the eleventh-century medieval king Bhoja\, widely known as a polymath\, author\, patron\, and adventurer across a wide array of local\, regional and pan-regional communities in South Asia. Bhoja\, unlike other kings that have been studied under the rubric of 'popular memory'\, is not primarily associated with a 'heroic' tradition of memory in early modern India. The talk will explore his life and actions as remembered by communities of itinerants\, Adivasis\, and others with seemingly little or no connection to the highly textualized memories preserved among bardic\, monastic and courtly societies that have left the greatest textual legacies of the king for modern scholars. The presentation will outline an overview of the project before focusing on Bhoja’s memory among itinerants and forest-dwellers to suggest several important conclusions about collective memory\, kingship\, and place that have not been addressed by existing scholarship.\n   \n   Dr Daud Ali is Associate in the Department of South Asian Studies\, University of Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Arts at the College of William in Mary in Religious Studies and English Literature before going to the University of Chicago\, where he completed a Master of Arts in History of Religions at the Divinity School and a PhD in the History Department. Dr Ali taught South Asian history at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)\, University of London\, for fourteen years before his arrival at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Dr Ali’s research has focused on mentalities and everyday practices in pre-Sultanate South Asia. He has published works on monastic discipline\, mercantile networks\, historical writing and inscriptions\, but his most enduring work has been on the culture of aristocratic society in early medieval India. In 2004 he completed Courtly Culture and Political Life in Early Medieval India (Cambridge)\, the first book-length study to focus exclusively on the development of the royal court as a social and cultural institution in early India. More recently\, Dr Ali has written on various themes related to courtly life\, including the composition of service retinues\, the use of gardens and landscapes\, concepts of gestural and bodily grace\, the formation of everyday ethics through poetic verbal culture\, and changing notions of the body in Sanskrit sex-manuals. This two-day affair hosted at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) in Ann Arbor and the black-owned Norwest Gallery in Detroit\, will feature showcases and works from a variety of African artists to celebrate and share African art with the Ann Arbor and Detroit communities. Our theme for the festival is “Saltwater Demands a Psalm\". Our festival headliner is Kweku Abimbola\, a UM alumnus from the Helen Zell Writers program. Kweku will be debuting his first full-length poetry collection\, Saltwater Demands a Psalm\, for which our festival theme is named. The début collection received the First Book Award from the Academy of American Poets in 2022. \n \nOther featured artists include Dr. Tawanda Chabikwa\, an interdisciplinary artist-scholar and Assistant Professor University of Texas El Paso\, fashion designer\, Hawi Sisay Midekssa\, and many more. This festival is a celebration of African art and it offers an immersive exploration of several themes of African and black life and culture through different mediums using water as a metaphor. DESCRIPTION:1989 is a new\, devised performance that centers on Irina Nistor\, a TV translator in Romania who secretly dubbed thousands of American movies that were censored under the oppressive dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu.
