SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Queer World Conversations
DESCRIPTION:See other Spectrum Center events: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nWe'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester\, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics\, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic\, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations\, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.\n\nTopics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required\, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want\, bring your friends\, and let's have a Conversation!\n\nUpcoming topics:\n4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity\n\nThere are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body \"should\" look like\, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever\, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative\, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, there is space to report that in the registration\, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Vision 2034: Town Halls
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey. \n\nThe collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts\, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges\, Bold Ideas\, Culture Journey\, as well as planning for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition\, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn\, UM-Flint\, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings\, expected soon.\n\nOur primary objectives are to:\n\n• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future\, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.\n\n• Generate big ideas through town halls\, surveys\, focus groups and other forums.\n\n• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.\n\n• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.\n\n• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.\n\nThe sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. A variety of audience groups & organizations will also participate through invite-only focus groups (not listed here).\n\nPlease note: Registration for events is currently limited to U-M faculty\, staff\, and students. If you do not see an event for your U-M affiliation\, please check back at a later time. Additional engagement opportunities will be continuously added.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Attend an Inclusive History Project Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Inclusive History Project (IHP) is preparing to study and document the University of Michigan’s past and to engage members of the U-M community in order to better understand U-M’s successes and failures in creating a truly inclusive university. Since November\, a Framing & Design Committee of faculty\, staff\, and students from the university’s three campuses has been working to design a multi-year plan for the project. \n\nThe contributions of individuals across our campuses and communities are vital to telling an inclusive history of the university\, and there will be many ways to participate in this shared project. Currently\, we are seeking your thoughts and ideas about the IHP in planning the work ahead of us. \n\nWe invite you to join us for an in-person or virtual forum to learn about the IHP and share your feedback. At these sessions\, we will make a brief presentation on the purpose and scope of the project and our planning process and then gather your input through small group discussions. \n\nNOTE: We're sorry\, but the UM-Ann Arbor forum is now at capacity\, and registration is closed. Share your thoughts and ideas through the feedback form in the links section of this page\, or by contacting inclusivehistory@umich.edu.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal\, largely-guided\, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment\, non-judgemental\, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.\n\nMindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause\, gain perspective\, attend to the present\, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Determinantal and Tableau Formulas for Back-Stable Schubert Polynomials
DESCRIPTION:Schubert polynomials of vexillary (2 1 4 3 avoiding) permutations are well known to have tableau and determinantal formulas. The goal of this talk is to extend this to general permutations\, by writing a general Schubert polynomial as a sum of products of such determinants. This is based on the bumpless-pipe-dream formula of Lam\, Lee\, and Shimozono. After reviewing some basic properties of back-stable Schubert polynomials\, we'll discuss determinantal and tableau formulas (some of which seem to be new)\, and then show how to use these to decompose general Schubert polynomials. Anything original is joint work with Dave Anderson.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GENDiR Seminar Series: Transfer Learning for Robots and for Humans
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nTransfer learning --- how information that is learned in one context can be transferred for use in a different setting --- has far-reaching consequences for agents operating under domain shifts. This talk will present lessons learned in transfer learning for robots and for humans. First\, the methodology of structural sim-to-real transfer for robots will be presented\, which aims to learn the causal structure of a robot manipulation policy or skill in simulation first before deployment on a real robot system. This section of the talk will summarize two algorithms in this area\, CREST and SCALE\, that were recognized by NCWIT as a Collegiate Award Honorable Mention. I will then draw parallels to how transfer learning can empower navigation of domain shifts in humans using my gender and physical disability transitions as examples. This section will identify human attributes and characteristics\, such as empathy\, compassion\, understanding\, and appreciation of differences\, that bolster other humans experiencing life transitions. Lastly\, I will summarize work done towards teaching such attributes for first-year Ph.D. students at Carnegie Mellon University through the development and launch of 15-996: Introduction to Justice\, Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion in Computer Science.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nTabitha Edith Lee is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. She is a member of the Intelligent Autonomous Manipulation Lab and advised by Prof. Oliver Kroemer. Her thesis research investigates causal robot learning for manipulation: the interplay between robot perception and control through the lens of causality to learn and leverage the causal structure of manipulation tasks. Her research in structural sim-to-real transfer has been recognized by an Honorable Mention selection for the NCWIT Collegiate Award. She is also a Siebel Scholar in Computer Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Skills\, Majors\, and Jobs: Does Higher Education Respond?
DESCRIPTION:How do college students and postsecondary institutions react to changes in skill demand in the U.S. labor market? This relationship is of vital interest\, shaping our understanding of skill shortages\, earnings inequality\, and productivity. Using a novel measure of labor demand at the institution-major level that combines online job ads\, geographic locations of alumni from a professional networking platform\, and a shift-share instrument\, we quantify the magnitude and nature of educational investment response to shifts in labor market demand across undergraduate programs at 4-year colleges and universities in the U.S. over the past decade. We examine response not only through degrees awarded\, as in some prior research\, but also through credits taken and the allocation of institutional resources. We explore heterogeneous responses by college and program characteristics and investigate sensitivity to lag structure. We estimate elasticities for undergraduate degrees centered around 1.3\, generally increasing with time horizon. Changes in undergraduate course credits and non-tenure-track faculty allocations partially mediate the overall degree production response. We document substantial heterogeneity in responsiveness by field of study\, with the social sciences\, health\, and communications displaying the most elastic responses to changes in skill demand. Finally\, responsiveness is relatively greater at less-selective and less-research-intensive institutions and among programs with below-median instructional costs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Quantum Simulation\, Sensing\, and Computation With Ultracold Atoms
DESCRIPTION:Ultracold atomic gases are perhaps the coldest matter in the universe\, reaching temperatures below one nano-kelvin. At these low temperatures\, noise is ironed out and the quantum mechanical properties of atoms\, not only of their internal atomic states but also of their center-of-mass motion\, become accessible and visible. I will describe applications of this ultracold quantum material in the areas of quantum simulation\, sensing\, and computation. Specifically\, I will show how quantum gases far from equilibrium allow us to probe geometric singularities in band structure\, a quantum simulation of condensed matter. I will describe how single atoms\, trapped tightly within optical tweezers\, can be serve as quantum sensors within a scanning-probe microscope of optical fields. Finally\, I will explain how cavity-enhanced detection allows us to make mid-circuit measurements within an atoms-based quantum computing platform\, a step toward quantum error correction. And what's next? Feedback control of quantum systems? Electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations serving as a chemical catalyst? Telecom-frequency optical clocks? Simulation of flat-band ferromagnetism? Perhaps all of the above.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | The APEX (A Positron-Electron eXperiment) Collaboration: Progress & Future Developments
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nLaboratory studies of quasineutral “pair” plasmas\, in which the positively and negatively charged particles have the same mass\, are a compelling frontier in fundamental plasma physics research. More than four decades of theory and simulation studies offer a wealth of predictions for how the collective behavior of such an unusually symmetric plasma is expected to compare to that of conventional plasmas. To experimentally test some of these predictions\, the goal of the APEX (A Positron Electron eXperiment) Collaboration is to create and study confined\, strongly magnetized electron-positron pair plasmas in the laboratory. Our “road map” involves unifying and advancing state-of-the-art physics and engineering in several areas\, including: extended accumulation and high-capacity storage of large numbers of positrons\, originating from a world-class positron source\; two superconducting\, tabletop-sized\, toroidal confinement devices with complementary magnetic topologies (a levitated dipole and a stellarator)\, in which the positrons will be combined with electrons and their plasma properties studied\; and the development and verification of a number of essential enabling techniques (e.g.\, efficient transport of positrons across magnetic flux surfaces and subsequent trapping). This seminar will offer an overview of the collaboration’s recent progress and upcoming milestones en route to pair plasma studies.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nEve V. Stenson is a scientist and group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP)\, Germany\, where she coordinates the international APEX collaboration. The most recent addition to the collaboration is the EPOS (Electrons and Positrons in an Optimized Stellarator) project\, her Helmholtz Young Investigator Group. Prior to getting into the business of “antimatter containment fields”\, she earned her Ph.D. from Caltech studying the dynamics of arched\, plasma-filled flux tubes generated with pulsed-power magnetized plasma guns. Other scientific interests over the years have included open-source cryo-genic temperature measurement systems\, positron-induced phosphor luminescence\, magnetoresistive semiconductors\, and blowing soap film bubbles in microgravity. She was recently honored with the Hans Werner Osthoff Plasma Physics Prize.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2223.php#winter2023

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nFrom the initial genetic patterning to the assembly of the whole embryo\, how ordered structures form has always been a fundamental question in developmental biology. The recent advances in imaging technologies are now providing us with direct visual access to the development of whole organisms in unprecedented detail. However\, it is clear that to make the best use of this complex data\, we need the help of computer algorithms that can mine it for biologically relevant information\, summarize and then visualize it for us. The first project I will present focuses on the mechanisms driving the development of diverse 3D bone morphologies in mice. There\, we developed algorithms to analyze micro-CT images to deconstruct the final morphology of each bone into the contributions made by remodeling of mineralized tissue vs. the cartilaginous growth plates. This allowed us to demonstrate the central role of the growth plate in 3D bone morphogenesis in normal and pathological development. The second project aims to understand how different cell activities contribute to large-scale morphogenetic movements. To this end\, we generated the first whole embryo single-cell atlas of morphogenetic activity underlying gastrulation in the fruit fly\, then used these maps to derive a statistical model associating cell shape changes and rearrangements to body axis elongation.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09\n\nAreas of Interest:\n\nMy lab focuses on understanding how cells organize to form various tissue morphologies during normal and pathological development. We use two model systems to achieve this: the musculoskeletal system in mice and whole embryo development in fruit flies. Our approach centers on the development of cutting-edge bioimage informatics and data science algorithms to analyze the dynamics and the underlying patterns in developing tissues through 3D and 4D (3D+time) fluorescence images.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: The strong degrees of categoricity above 0''
DESCRIPTION:The degree of categoricity of a computable structure is the least Turing degree that computes an isomorphism between any two computable isomorphic copies of the structure. It provides a robust measure of complexity for computable structures – if A has degree of categoricity d\, then modulo d all its isomorphic copies have the same computational properties. Two of the main goals in this area are to obtain a characterization of the Turing degrees that are degrees of categoricity of computable structures and to see whether all degrees of categoricity are strong\, i.e.\, arise from the isomorphisms between two copies of a structure.\n\nIn this talk I will introduce the methods and main results in the area and discuss recent results of Csima and me. We obtained a characterization of the strong degrees of categoricity above 0'' as what we call the treeable degrees above 0''.

SUMMARY:Other:The role of Cytochrome P450 Metabolism of Dietary Fatty Acids on Neurodegeneration\n
DESCRIPTION:Despite decades of research\, the mechanism of neurodegeneration remains unclear. Ferroptosis\, a non-apoptotic programmed cell death driven by an iron-dependent membrane lipid peroxidation\, is an emerging target and mechanism for aging and age-associated neurodegenerative diseases. While membrane lipid peroxidation is one of the molecular hallmarks of ferroptosis\, the involvement of specific polyunsaturated fatty acids and their downstream metabolites as endogenous lipid mediators of ferroptosis remains understudied. Here\, we hypothesize that cytochrome P450 (CYP)-epoxide hydrolases metabolites of PUFAs are a new class of lipid mediators of ferroptosis. \r\nInvestigating the effects of specific PUFA and PUFA metabolites on ferroptosis are challenging for two main reasons. Firstly\, there is a plethora of endogenous biosynthetic and metabolic enzymatic pathways\, and these enzymes express differently across diverse tissues. Secondly\, the mechanism of ferroptosis is not well-defined or characterized. Therefore\, a system approach is likely needed. To overcome these challenges\, we employed Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a novel simplified biological model. Using a well-established neurodegenerative assay and transgenic C. elegans with green-fluorescent protein-tagged (GFP) neurons\, we show that among all the tested PUFAs\, only dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) triggers significant ferroptosis-mediated neurodegeneration after one day of exposure. Interestingly\, only dopaminergic neurons and\, to a lesser extent\, glutaminergic neurons were affected in our studies. Using our state-of-the-art oxylipins analysis and comprehensive chemical probes\, we identified the dihydroxy- metabolites of DGLA are likely the lipid mediator responsible for DGLA-induced ferroptosis-mediated neurodegeneration. We were also able to show that epoxide hydrolases play a key role in ferroptosis and neurodegeneration. \r\nIn short\, our study identified a novel class of endogenous lipid mediators of ferroptosis. Our findings improve our understanding of how PUFA downstream metabolism modulates neurodegeneration. Additionally\, the developed C. elegans models and identified dihydroxy- metabolites of DGLA provide a strong foundation for us to further investigate the mechanism of ferroptosis-mediated neurodegeneration that would identify a novel mechanism for ferroptosis and novel therapeutic targets for preventative or disease-altering treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. At the end of this presentation\, we will also share the current drug discovery effort to target this metabolism for neurodegenerative diseases. \n \nKin Sing Stephen Lee (Michigan State University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science Café
DESCRIPTION:An asteroid killed the dinosaurs—or maybe it was more complicated than that? Scientists have good reason to believe the asteroid impact caused other events that contributed to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and many other organisms. If there were a massive tsunami at the end of the Cretaceous period\, how would we know that? If we suspect as much\, how could we find out? Join Ted Moore and Brian Arbic of the U-M Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences as we discuss the detective work necessary to provide evidence for a massive tsunami. How else might these methods be applied? How is this science relevant to the present\, or to the future of our planet?\n\nScience Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting.\n\nComplimentary hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.\nThe program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early.\n\nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.
