SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey. \n\nThe collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts\, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges\, Bold Ideas\, Culture Journey\, as well as planning for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition\, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn\, UM-Flint\, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings\, expected soon.\n\nOur primary objectives are to:\n\n• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future\, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.\n\n• Generate big ideas through town halls\, surveys\, focus groups and other forums.\n\n• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.\n\n• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.\n\n• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.\n\nThe sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: American partisans misperceive the diversity\, not the extremity\, of other partisans' attitudes
DESCRIPTION:A popular explanation for rising partisan animosity and declining faith in democracy in the United States is that Republicans and Democrats misperceive each other to hold extreme policy attitudes. Yet\, perceptions of group attitudes vary along other dimensions\, and these perceptions are likely as important to democracy. In particular\, Americans may underestimate the diversity of Democrats' and Republicans' attitudes to harmful effect. This paper uses surveys and pre-registered experiments with representative and convenience samples (N = 6\,158) to assess the extent to which Americans misperceive that each party holds ``all the same'' attitudes and\, furthermore\, the consequences of these perceptions. Contrary to existing research\, we find that American partisans do not consistently overestimate how radical the ``average'' Republican or Democrat is. However\, Republicans and Democrats do vastly underestimate the diversity of each party's attitudes. Correcting these misperceptions of within-party attitude diversity reduces partisan animosity and the perceived threat posed by the opposing party.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Black Ownership Matters: Does Revealing Race Increase Demand For Minority-Owned Businesses?
DESCRIPTION:Is there consumer demand to support Black-owned businesses? To explore\, we investigate the impact of a new feature on a large online platform that made the race of a set of Black business owners salient to customers. We find that this feature substantially increased demand for Black-owned businesses - in the form of more calls to the restaurant\, more delivery orders\, and - using cell phone data from a different platform - more in person visits to the restaurant. New customers to Black-owned businesses were more likely to be White customers - suggesting demand among White restaurant goers for Black-owned businesses. The gains for Black-owned businesses vary across geographically fine-grained measures of racial prejudice: we observe larger gains in areas with less anti-Black bias\, as measured by implicit association tests. We also find suggestive evidence that the effects are stronger in predominately White\, Democratic-leaning areas.

DESCRIPTION:In the spectral theory of self-adjoint and unitary operators in one dimension (such as Schrodinger\, Dirac\, and Jacobi operators)\, a half-line operator is encoded by a Weyl function\; for whole-line operators\, the reflectionless property is a pseudocontinuation relation between the two half-line Weyl functions. We develop a comprehensive theory of reflectionless canonical systems with an arbitrary Dirichlet-regular Widom spectrum with the Direct Cauchy Theorem property. This generalizes\, to an infinite gap setting\, the constructions of finite gap quasiperiodic (algebro-geometric) solutions of stationary integrable hierarchies. Instead of theta functions on a compact Riemann surface\, the construction is based on reproducing kernels of character-automorphic Hardy spaces in Widom domains with respect to Martin measure. We also construct unitary character-automorphic Fourier transforms which generalize the Paley-Wiener theorem. Finally\, we find the correct notion of almost periodicity which holds in general for canonical system parameters in Arov gauge\, and we prove generically optimal results for almost periodicity for Potapov-de Branges gauge\, and Dirac operators. When the character is trivial\, Guo and Jacquet proposed a relative trace formula approach in the mid 90s. This trace formula however cannot be extended to the case with a nontrivial character. We propose a new trace formula to attack this general case. This is joint work with Wei Zhang.

DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. DESCRIPTION:A memoir in music\n\nOver the years\, we’ve featured fiddler Mark O’Connor at The Ark many times\, with each show revealing a new facet of this amazing American musician. Mark’s new project\, “Crossing Bridges\,” gives a glimpse into how it all came to be. “Crossing Bridges” is a book and a concert\, tracing his journey rom his childhood years\, when at age 11 he was winning classical guitar competitions against University graduates\, and at age 12 was thrust as a soloist onto the Grand Ole Opry stage introduced by the King of Country Music\, Roy Acuff. The story covers Mark’s 1970s child prodigy years on the road as national fiddle and guitar champion. The acclaimed musician learned at the feet of American music legends while exploring his relationships with his mother and dysfunctional family\, a near career-ending accident and his involvement in some of the world's most iconic instrumental bands. The memoir details the personal triumphs\, struggles and demons that informed the decisions he made about his music\, career path and the risks he was willing to take for a shot at the brass ring. The first half of this show will feature music from Mark O’Connor\, while the second half offers a discussion of the book\, anecdotes\, and a Q&A.
