Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices, dark sousveillance, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami, the Havana Biennale, Sofa Expo, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture\u2019s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\r\n\r\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020, selected by Susan Thompson, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University, with a concentration in photography. \r\n\r\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled \u201cHow I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers\u201d at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. In this talk, we will describe the identification of a long-sought group of brainstem neurons that are critically responsible for CO2 sensation in the service of breathing control, and of the molecular proton detectors that subserve this sensory function. We will also describe some of the intrinsic properties and neuromodulatory capabilities of these neurons, including our discovery of a peptidergic system that activates at the time of birth to stabilize breathing. Finally, we will provide evidence that this system may contribute to various breathing disorders, including congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS).\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker:\r\nDoug Bayliss, Ph.D.\r\nJoseph & Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology\r\nUniversity of Virginia, Charlottesville\r\n\r\nDoug Bayliss obtained his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of North Carolina and, after postdoctoral training in Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington, he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia where he is currently the Joseph and Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology. Dr. Bayliss has a long-standing interest in cellular and ionic mechanisms that regulate brain function, with a particular interest in the receptors, signaling pathways and ion channel effectors that underlie neurotransmitter\/neuropeptide modulation of brainstem neurons involved in cardiorespiratory control. One key challenge associated with these systems is material corrosion, and understanding how actinide materials, such as uranium, can affect corrosion kinetics in these systems is an important goal. In this talk, Dr. Lhermitte outlines the design and construction of the electroanalytical capabilities of the molten salt chemistry laboratory at Los Alamos National Lab to investigate these problems. Key discoveries as part of this work were: the design of a new type of sealed Mg\/MgCl2 reference electrode, the preparation of small area electrodes for high resolution cyclic voltammetry, and the development of electromotive force measurements to determine the formal potential of U3+\/U0 in chloride melts.
