SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Explore The Uncharted History of How Pottery Transformed Global Relations\n \nClay As Soft Power examines how Shigaraki ware ceramics transformed the American public’s image of Japan\, helping the country shift its identity from World War II enemy to Cold War ally to global cultural change maker.  Known for its earthy tones\, rough clay surfaces\, and natural ash glazes\, Shigaraki wares originated from one of six ancient kilns of Japan\, and has a rich history from the 13th century to today. This exhibition explores three distinct periods of that history\, telling a story of global intrigue\, covert international relations\, and the evolution of this uniquely Japanese art form.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. DESCRIPTION:Featuring Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary\n\nRose Baldino and Brian Buchanan met ten years ago\, late one night backstage at a theater in rural Pennsylvania. Brian's band Enter The Haggis and Rose's group Burning Bridget Cleary were sharing a stage that evening\, and the two bonded over a love of Irish fiddle tunes\, Radiohead\, and 4 a.m. whiskey. Their paths crossed a dozen times over the next decade on the road\, but it wasn't until a 2014 conference that they finally became musical collaborators. Burning Bridget Cleary's guitarist and drummer had their flights canceled at the last minute\, and Rose (in desperation) asked Brian to grab a guitar and join her onstage. The two performed with virtually no rehearsal for over an hour\, and their connection was powerful and immediate. A few months later Brian moved from Canada to Philadelphia\, and as a tribute to the first tune Rose ever taught Brian\, House of Hamill was born. Brian and Rose are both accomplished traditional fiddle players and classical violinists\, and despite being young\, have over 25 years of writing and performance experience between them. Together\, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting\, unpredictable original songs while also breathing new life into traditional and contemporary material.
