Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \r\n\r\n\u201cPortraits of Feminism in Japan\u201d is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. You should, because U-M has been home to some of the great poets of the 20th century -- and now the 21st as well. Robert Frost, Theodore Roethke, Robert Hayden, W.H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and Frank O'Hara have all been affiliated with Michigan. This great tradition started in the 1920s, when Frost served as the University's first Fellow in Creative Arts. And it is a tradition continued by contemporary poets who studied at U-M and who are now at the center of conversations about American poetry -- individuals such as Victoria Chang, francine j. harris, and Jaswinder Bolina. Join us to learn from Cody Walker about U-M's rich history of poetic writing.\r\n\r\nCody Walker directs the University of Michigan English Department\u2019s Undergraduate Program in Creative Writing. He also directs the Bear River Writers\u2019 Conference in Northern Michigan. The author of three poetry collections, including The Self-Styled No-Child (Waywiser Press, 2016), his work appears in The Yale Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and two editions of The Best American Poetry series. His awards include the James Boatwright III Prize for Poetry from Shenandoah, the Howard Mosher Short Fiction Prize from Hunger Mountain, and residency fellowships from the University of Arizona Poetry Center, the Amy Clampitt Fund, and the Sewanee Writers\u2019 Conference. A longtime writer-in-residence in Seattle Arts & Lectures\u2019 Writers in the Schools program, he was elected Seattle Poet Populist in 2007.
