Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location\u2014deep underground\u2014provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world\u2019s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.\r\n\r\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Pulling from various figurative art techniques, including hyperrealism, baroque, and veristic surrealism, Durden employs a wide range of mediums\u2014oil and acrylic paint, graphite, film photography, and the written word\u2014to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist, curator, educator, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art & Architecture University (Tehran, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume, artifact, ritual, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice, hybridity, and magic. \nDurden, Ghaderi, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29, 2023. The Bonsai and Penjing Garden at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum turns 10 this year and welcomes additional specimens to its ranks of nationally and internationally renowned trees. These little trees tell big stories\u2014of their own, of their artists, and those imagined by viewers. They celebrate relationships and commitment. Our centenarians demonstrate generations of care before they became our guests. Little trees bring people together worldwide as we admire and learn from the trees and each other. This Flash Talk explores how this collection has grown and changed over time and the relevance of bonsai in an academic institution now and moving forward. \r\n\r\nCarmen Leskoviansky has a degree in horticulture from Michigan State University. She has worked at MBGNA since 2009 and cared for the bonsai collection since 2011. Carmen is currently studying bonsai as an apprentice with Michael Hagedorn of Crategus Bonsai in Portland, Oregon.\r\n\r\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators, staff members, researchers, graduate students, or guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors.
