SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Other:On the Benefits of Multitask Learning: A Perspective Based on Task Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMultitask learning (MTL) has achieved remarkable success in numerous domains\, such as healthcare\, computer vision\, and natural language processing\, by leveraging the relatedness across tasks. However\, current theories of multitask learning fall short in explaining the success of some phenomena commonly observed in practice. For instance\, many empirical studies have shown that having a diverse set of tasks improves both training and testing performance. This thesis aims at providing new theoretical insights into the significance of task diversity in two major learning settings: Supervised Learning and Reinforcement Learning. For supervised MTL\, we focus on studying a popular learning paradigm known as multitask representation learning and provide a theoretical foundation that establishes diversity as a crucial condition for achieving good generalization performance. In the setting where tasks can be\nadaptively chosen\, we propose an online learning algorithm that effectively achieves diversity with low regret. I then expand the discussion to Reinforcement Learning (RL)\, which involves making sequential decisions to optimize long-term rewards. Previous exploration designs in RL were either computationally intractable or lacked formal guarantees. We show that\, in addition to the generalization benefits demonstrated in supervised learning\, multitask reinforcement learning with a diverse set of tasks enables sample-efficient myopic exploration. This is surprising because myopic exploration is provably sample efficient in the worst case even for a single task.

DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

DESCRIPTION:Talk Title\nQueer Voices for Gender Inclusion\, Too: Queer Realities Meet Harm Evaluation Frameworks for Generative AI\n\nAbstract\nTransgender and non-binary (TGNB) individuals disproportionately experience discrimination and exclusion from daily life. Given the recent popularity and adoption of generative AI and large language models (LLMs)\, the potential to further marginalize this population only grows. Assessing these systems for gender-inclusivity requires understanding how TGNB identities uniquely interact with dominant gender norms\; crafting harm evaluations for TGNB persons must be guided by TGNB voices\, different from gender binary-centric perspectives. Harm measurement frameworks inherently require centering TGNB voices to help guide the alignment between gender-inclusive Natural Language Generation (NLG) and whom they are intended to serve. In this talk\, I discuss grounding LLM harm evaluation in the TGNB community and existing interdisciplinary literature to assess how the social reality surrounding experienced marginalization of TGNB persons contributes to and persists within Open Language Generation (OLG). This social knowledge serves as a guide for evaluating popular LLMs (ChatGPT\, GPT-2\, GPT-Neo\, and OPT) on two key aspects: (1) misgendering and (2) gender disclosure. We discover a dominance of binary gender norms in the LLMs and consider what this means for understanding harms to users who don’t ascribe to the gender binary. Across the talk\, I contextualize findings in commonly-used robotic manipulation datasets like OpenAI’s CLIP and explore what these insights mean for responsible robotics.\nPaper: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3593013.3594078\n\nSpeaker Bio\nAnaelia Ovalle (they/them) is an Afro-Carribean\, queer\, and non-binary PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Advised by Prof. Kai-Wei Chang\, Anaelia’s research centers the interfacing of ML design with algorithmic fairness objectives and the broader socio-technical milieu. With particular emphasis on historically marginalized communities\, their research synergizes across both algorithmic fairness and critical social theory to guide approaches in mitigating AI-driven sociotechnical harms. Their work operates at 2 resolutions: (1) inclusive natural language processing and representation learning (e.g. how do we center trans communities in NLG\, what does nonbinary exclusion mean and look like in a language context?) and (2) expanding AI ethics praxis (in both research and broader institutional mechanization) through intersectionality and participatory design. They have previously interned across several Responsible AI teams including Meta\, Amazon Prime Video\, and Amazon Alexa. Their research with Alexa was just accepted to ACM FAccT 2023. Prior to their PhD\, Elia received a BS magna cum laude in Data Science from the University of San Francisco.\n\nThis talk is supported by an LGBTQ+ Project Grant from the Spectrum Center.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us in 335 West Hall or via Zoom:\n     Meeting ID: 923 7994 3630\n     Passcode: 577482\n\nAbstract: There are dozens of efforts\, in academia\, industry\, and national labs\, dedicated to building error-corrected quantum computers. Achieving this milestone will require understanding and controlling complex quantum noise\, including non-Markovian noise. Such noise spans many qubits and many gates\, leading to highly complex spatial-temporal quantum-correlated structures. Both describing and characterising such noise have been outstanding challenges\, hindering the hopes of controlling this noise.\n\nI will present recent theoretical breakthroughs to express all quantum non-Markovian phenomena in terms of a multi-time density matrix. In this picture\, quantum processes possess complex temporal entanglement responsible for exotic dynamical phases\, quantum chaos\, computationally complex processes\, and much more. The culmination of these effects leads to a new discipline that we call many-time physics in analogy to many-body physics.\n\nAn immediate application of many-time physics is a set of operational tools to characterise and control complex noise. In particular\, I will report both the detailed features and coarse structures of noise in real quantum devices\, including temporal entanglement. We then go on to tame this noise with high efficacy using active control\, along with the characterisation information.\n\nBiography: Since mid-2022\, Kavan Modi has served as the founding Director of the Centre for Quantum Technology at Transport for New South Wales. Currently\, he is on leave from Monash University\, where he has been a member of the faculty at the School of Physics and Astronomy since 2014. Prior to this\, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Clarendon Lab\, University of Oxford (2012-2013) and at the Centre for Quantum Technology\, National University of Singapore (2009-2011). He received his Ph.D. under Prof. George Sudarshan at the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. His research\, at Monash\, focuses on understanding the structure of complex quantum processes so that they can be characterised and controlled in quantum computers. His research\, at TfNSW\, focuses on developing quantum algorithms to aid transport use cases. On the whole\, his research builds meaningful bridges between fundamental physics and its applications in engineering and software development.
