Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \r\n\r\n\u201cPortraits of Feminism in Japan\u201d is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. Given the recent popularity and adoption of generative AI and large language models (LLMs), the potential to further marginalize this population only grows. Assessing these systems for gender-inclusivity requires understanding how TGNB identities uniquely interact with dominant gender norms; crafting harm evaluations for TGNB persons must be guided by TGNB voices, different from gender binary-centric perspectives. Harm measurement frameworks inherently require centering TGNB voices to help guide the alignment between gender-inclusive Natural Language Generation (NLG) and whom they are intended to serve. In this talk, I discuss grounding LLM harm evaluation in the TGNB community and existing interdisciplinary literature to assess how the social reality surrounding experienced marginalization of TGNB persons contributes to and persists within Open Language Generation (OLG). This social knowledge serves as a guide for evaluating popular LLMs (ChatGPT, GPT-2, GPT-Neo, and OPT) on two key aspects: (1) misgendering and (2) gender disclosure. We discover a dominance of binary gender norms in the LLMs and consider what this means for understanding harms to users who don\u2019t ascribe to the gender binary. Across the talk, I contextualize findings in commonly-used robotic manipulation datasets like OpenAI\u2019s CLIP and explore what these insights mean for responsible robotics.\r\nPaper: https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3593013.3594078\r\n\r\nSpeaker Bio\r\nAnaelia Ovalle (they\/them) is an Afro-Carribean, queer, and non-binary PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Advised by Prof. Kai-Wei Chang, Anaelia\u2019s research centers the interfacing of ML design with algorithmic fairness objectives and the broader socio-technical milieu. With particular emphasis on historically marginalized communities, their research synergizes across both algorithmic fairness and critical social theory to guide approaches in mitigating AI-driven sociotechnical harms. Their work operates at 2 resolutions: (1) inclusive natural language processing and representation learning (e.g. how do we center trans communities in NLG, what does nonbinary exclusion mean and look like in a language context?) and (2) expanding AI ethics praxis (in both research and broader institutional mechanization) through intersectionality and participatory design. They have previously interned across several Responsible AI teams including Meta, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Alexa. Their research with Alexa was just accepted to ACM FAccT 2023. Achieving this milestone will require understanding and controlling complex quantum noise, including non-Markovian noise. Such noise spans many qubits and many gates, leading to highly complex spatial-temporal quantum-correlated structures. Both describing and characterising such noise have been outstanding challenges, hindering the hopes of controlling this noise.\r\n\r\nI will present recent theoretical breakthroughs to express all quantum non-Markovian phenomena in terms of a multi-time density matrix. In this picture, quantum processes possess complex temporal entanglement responsible for exotic dynamical phases, quantum chaos, computationally complex processes, and much more. The culmination of these effects leads to a new discipline that we call many-time physics in analogy to many-body physics.\r\n\r\nAn immediate application of many-time physics is a set of operational tools to characterise and control complex noise. In particular, I will report both the detailed features and coarse structures of noise in real quantum devices, including temporal entanglement. We then go on to tame this noise with high efficacy using active control, along with the characterisation information.\r\n\r\nBiography: Since mid-2022, Kavan Modi has served as the founding Director of the Centre for Quantum Technology at Transport for New South Wales. Currently, he is on leave from Monash University, where he has been a member of the faculty at the School of Physics and Astronomy since 2014. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Clarendon Lab, University of Oxford (2012-2013) and at the Centre for Quantum Technology, National University of Singapore (2009-2011). He received his Ph.D. under Prof. George Sudarshan at the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. His research, at Monash, focuses on understanding the structure of complex quantum processes so that they can be characterised and controlled in quantum computers. His research, at TfNSW, focuses on developing quantum algorithms to aid transport use cases.
