Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location\u2014deep underground\u2014provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world\u2019s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.\r\n\r\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist, curator, educator, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art & Architecture University (Tehran, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume, artifact, ritual, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice, hybridity, and magic. \nDurden, Ghaderi, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29, 2023. The contextual history of the various mediums used; clay, fiber, mycelium, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a \u201cthird space\u201d through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials, each artist creates their own metrics, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal, ecological, digital, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. The Astronomers of U-M's Detroit Observatory were responsible for the discovery and study of many asteroids in our solar system and we are lucky to still have the telescopes and scientific instruments that helped them complete this work. Join us Friday, June 30 for a talks and presentations around our history with asteroids, along with demos of our beautiful 19th century telescopes. We will also be showing images of asteroids and comets taken through our historic Fitz telescope. If weather permits, we will also include night sky observing through our telescopes.\r\n\r\nSeeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people, places, and sciences from the observatory's history. Talks and presentations feature observatory staff and begin at 8PM.
