DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk Take-Over | Inspiring Conservation: The Great Lakes Gardens at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Gardens were established in 2013 to showcase a diverse array of natural communities and their associated plants that are native to Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The gardens serve as an important place for the general public and university community to learn about these natural communities and be inspired to care about their protection and stewardship. In addition to the educational and inspirational benefits to conservation\, the gardens play an important role in the *ex situ* conservation of numerous uncommon and rare native plants and the insect fauna that rely on them. Challenges to curating and caring for the Great Lakes Gardens include acquiring and establishing representative native plants\, maintaining adequate interpretive signage (especially plant labels)\, and controlling nonnative plants.\n\nMichael Kost serves as the associate curator at University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum and as a lecturer in the School for Environment and Sustainability. As a curator\, he focuses on natural areas stewardship planning and making data on living collections accessible for teaching\, learning\, and research. Before joining U-M\, he served as the lead ecologist and a senior conservation scientist with Michigan Natural Features Inventory at Michigan State University\, where he focused on documenting and describing natural communities and rare species\, as well as identifying key sites for biodiversity conservation and management. In this role\, he coauthored over 80 publications\, including three books on the natural communities of Michigan.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, or guests talking about their recent research or current projects.
