The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1, 2023.

According to Sarah Unrath, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams, memories, goals, pasts. We all process emotions of anger, joy, grief, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”

The curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists, including Andy Wynkoop, An ArtsyGuy, RIK, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson, and many others.

“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity,” says Unrath

Molecules of Life (Student Showcase)
Discover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, form determines function, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry, and Liz Tidwell, PhD candidate in Biophysics, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform, make, break, modify, and move within the body.",https://events.umich.edu/event/110034,"Museum of Natural History",,"Museum of Natural History",,"Biosciences

On the third Friday of the month, the Clements Library hosts a virtual Bookworm program that gathers authors, collectors, fellows and University staff for a conversation on a variety of history topics. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library Tea Time, attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions, respond to polls, and add to the conversation. On August 18th, the Bookworm will host U-M Professor Jason Young, curator of Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina--an exhibition that will open at UMMA on August 26th.

Hear Me Now is a landmark exhibition of more than 60 objects representing the work of African American potters in the decades surrounding the Civil War. The exhibition features monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave, later recorded as David Drake (about 1800–about 1870), while the inclusion of several contemporary works from leading Black artists links the past to the present. Working primarily in clay, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.

Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.

Gina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708

108113-21818958,"2023-08-18 20:00:00",,"Bettye Lavette","Presented by The Ark",Performance,"“I ain’t got no f*cking other plan,” says the legendary Bettye LaVette. She’s talking about her 61-year storied career, beginning in 1960’s Detroit, with a resurgence in the mid-2000’s. For her latest LP, simply titled LaVette! (June 16), she teamed once again with producer Steve Jordan for a special release on Jay-Vee Records, the label founded by Jordan and Meegan Voss. An interpreter without peer, Bettye chose to record an album of songs written by Randall Bramblett. “I think he’s the best songwriter I’ve heard in the past 30 years,” says LaVette, “and I just discovered him eight years ago.”

“Bettye LaVette is like a combination of Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis,” says Jordan. “When I prepare a band for her, I make sure we have it together. When she joins us, we’re only gonna get one or two takes, because she puts her heart and soul into each performance.” The late, great George Jones, called her ""a singer's singer"".

Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Bettye’s parents, Louisiana migrants, ran a club out of
their home. They sold corn liquor and chicken sandwiches and spun records for the
Black auto-parts workers and traveling gospel groups who didn’t have a hangout to kick back in and call their own. She was a toddler, listening in on old folks' business; learning old folks' ways. Some of that was conversation, observing the interactions, the repartee; some of it was the 78s that spun on the family’s jukebox — a trove of blues, gospel, country & western, and the latest R&B that filtered through AM radio playlists.

“When Bettye gets a hold of a song, it becomes her song,” Jordan explains. “It’s like she wrote it. She’s a great messenger, a communicator, an interpreter.
“I’m very happy with what we’ve done,” Bettye adds. “It is very, very difficult to please an old woman, but I’m nearly excited.” She is a six-time Grammy nominee, has recieved a Pioneer Award from The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, has won several Blues Music Awards and has been inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame. Bettye is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today.

She and her full band will be presenting songs from the new album as well as some
older favorites.
