The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1, 2023.

According to Sarah Unrath, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams, memories, goals, pasts. We all process emotions of anger, joy, grief, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”

The curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists, including Andy Wynkoop, An ArtsyGuy, RIK, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson, and many others.

“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity,” says Unrath

Molecules of Life (Student Showcase)
Discover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, form determines function, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry, and Liz Tidwell, PhD candidate in Biophysics, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform, make, break, modify, and move within the body.",https://events.umich.edu/event/110034,"Museum of Natural History",,"Museum of Natural History",,"Biosciences

Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.

Gina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new, the light and dark, and the known and unknown.

If the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, then The Sweet Water Warblers are no exception. Comprising Michigan songbirds Rachael Davis, Lindsay Lou, and May Erlewine, the folk trio’s organic vocal harmonies and seamlessly interwoven instrumentation leaves listeners breathless. The Sweet Water Warblers came together in 2014, for a single performance at the Hoxeyville Music Festival upon request by the promoter. From the beginning, there was a unique connection between the three artists, a bond forged by a mutual passion for social change and expansion of the soul through music. The Warblers forged ahead with their first full studio album, “The Dream That Holds This Child.” Produced by Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Caroline Spence), the album serves to empower and uplift spirits, and offer refuge, solidarity and support through its focus on modern femininity. “Our sound is a place of refuge. Its roots are deep, and its arms are stretched open wide,” says Lindsay Lou. “This is the gospel of creating beauty from pain.”
