SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Evolution and function of the vertebral column in aquatic mammals
DESCRIPTION:Biography: Amandine is a morphologist and evolutionary biologist with a peculiar interest in marine organisms. She gained her BSc and MSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Liège\, Belgium\, and conducted her Master’s thesis on the comparative morphology of cephalic cartilage in cephalopods at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia\, Spain. After gaining experience in the field as a research assistant for projects studying wild dolphin populations\, she came back to Belgium to pursue her Ph.D. at the Laboratory of Functional and Evolutionary Morphology at the University of Liège. Her project focused on understanding how morphological modifications of the backbone of cetaceans are related to their ecology and evolutionary history by combining morphometrics\, biomechanics\, kinematics and phylogenetic comparative methods. Amandine joined the Pierce lab in order to investigate how repeated invasions of the aquatic realm affected the form and function of the mammalian backbone in collaboration with Katrina Jones (The University of Manchester). This project will involve morphological and biomechanical data on terrestrial\, semi-aquatic and fully aquatic extant and extinct mammals in order to clarify the impact of the land-to-water transition on the axial skeleton at a broad comparative level.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

As their role in the world of space propulsion continues to grow\, so too does the need for using non-traditional propellants.\n\nOne of the most appealing is krypton\, a noble gas with a lighter mass and higher ionization energy compared to the more traditional\nxenon. Additionally\, the advent of magnetic shielding has enabled longer lifetimes and higher power operation on Hall thrusters\, opening\nup a new regime of operation while altering the internal plasma properties. There is an apparent need to characterize the performance\ndifferences between xenon and krypton on these shielded Hall thrusters. With a framework for characterizing performance equipped\,\nincluding a 0D model for predicting mass utilization in terms of plasma parameters\, this work sets out to investigate how xenon and\nkrypton efficiencies scale at high powers and the underlying physics behind these trends.\n\nFirst\, the efficiency of a shielded Hall thruster operating across a standard throttling table is measured and explored. It is found that with\nincreasing discharge voltage\, the efficiency gap between xenon and krypton does not close as it does for unshielded thrusters\, a\nphenomenon attributed to different trends in mass utilization. Next\, a modified shielded Hall thruster is operated at current densities an\norder of magnitude higher than the typical 100-150 mA/cm2. At these conditions\, the efficiency gap between propellants not only closes\nbut also reverses. The closing of this gap is attributed to krypton's more rapid increases in mass utilization given its lower initial plasma\ndensity\; the reversal is attributed to the weaker dependence of krypton's electron confinement on current density. Finally\, the derived 0D model of mass utilization is leveraged with surrogate measurements of internal plasma properties to elucidate why the performance gap\nscales differently with increasing voltage and increasing current. It is found that increases in plasma density are primarily what drive the\nincreases in mass utilization and the more rapid gains for krypton with increasing power. These findings represent a marked step in our\nunderstanding of Hall thruster operation at high power on alternate propellants.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSystems neuroscience is now tackling higher-dimensional spaces as we record from larger neural populations\, examine richer behavioral repertoires\, and place animals in more complex environments. Combined with precise stimulation technologies\, we can begin to dissect large-scale circuits in vivo\, constructing models that causally relate neural activity to behavior. Perturbative testing of hypothesized brain-behavior links\, however\, requires statistically efficient methods for both estimating and intervening on neural activity in real time. Here I will discuss a few ways in which we can construct and refine models built in real-time\, as neural or behavioral data are acquired\, and use them to ‘close the loop’ and determine the optimal next stimulus to present or optimal next neuronal perturbation to apply. We demonstrate these methods in simulation and in experiments studying the optomotor response in larval zebrafish with calcium fluorescence imaging.\n \nBio:\nDr. Anne Draelos is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan. Her lab is focused on machine learning and statistical techniques to facilitate real-time analysis of high-dimensional neural and behavioral data. Anne obtained her PhD in physics and underwent postdoctoral training in neuroscience at Duke University. She currently holds a Career Award at the Scientific Interface from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Adrian has been songwriting and performing since 2007. He’s originally from central Wisconsin\, lived in D.C. for many years\, and now lives in Nashville with Meredith\, who has played old-time fiddle and clogged since she was child\, and started performing with Adrian during 2012 recording of \"Roam.\" Before that\, she was a member of the MSU-based band The Bard Owls. This duo brings a whole new meeting of the minds between old-time music and punk! Adrian+Meredith have spent the last seven years with 150+ dates a year touring the U.S\, and since 2018\, also in Poland\, Sweden\, Norway\, Denmark\, and Britain.
