SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fall 2023 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing\, 20 hours
DESCRIPTION:This program is for U-M Student Life staff. Cost for non-Student Life staff is $200 per person for the 20 hours. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's an especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence) and therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health. It's use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk and a little on discord (if there is time). Lots of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple behavior changes you'd like to work on!) While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, know how to improve and maybe even want to learn more! Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. All Fridays:\n\n* Sept 1\, 8:30-5\, University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor* Sept 8\, 8:30-12:30\, University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor\n* Sept 15\, 8:30-12:30\,University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor* Sept 22\, 8:30-12:30\,University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shared Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Friday\, August 11th\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at the Greater Flint Arts Council from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The End of Inequality? Effects of Work Reorganization Amid Resurgent Worker Power
DESCRIPTION:High-paying factory jobs in the 1940s were an engine of egalitarian economic growth for a generation. Are there alternate forms of work organization that deliver similar benefits for frontline workers? Work organization varies by types of complexity and their degree of employer control. Technical and tacit knowledge tasks receive higher pay for signaling or developing human capital. Higher autonomy tasks elicit efficiency wages. To test these ideas\, we match administrative earnings to task descriptions from job postings. We then compare earnings for workers hired into the same occupation and firm\, but under different task allocations. When jobs raise task complexity and autonomy\, new hires' starting earnings increase and grow faster. However\, while half the earnings boost from complex\, technical tasks is due to shifting worker selection\, worker selection changes less for tacit knowledge tasks and very little for adding high autonomy tasks. We also study which employers provide these jobs: frontline tacit knowledge tasks are disproportionately in larger\, profitable manufacturing and retail firms\; technical tasks are in newer health and business services\; and higher autonomy jobs are in smaller and fast-growing firms. These results demonstrate how organization-level allocations of tasks can undergird high-paying jobs for frontline workers.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Andrew Thomson\, University College London
DESCRIPTION:The H/C ratio in earth’s exosphere is higher than it is in the source region of primitive basalts\, suggesting the presence of an enriched carbon reservoir in the mantle [1]. A plausible explanation is that subduction of carbon over time may have enriched the mantle in recycled material over time. Whilst recent estimates of carbon fluxes between surface and interior reservoirs suggest very little carbon reaches the asthenospheric mantle [2]\, natural sub-lithospheric diamonds provide direct evidence for mantle carbon. \n\nSub-lithospheric diamonds from kimberlites in the Juina regions of Brazil contain trapped silicate inclusion assemblages reminiscent of portions of mafic eclogitic lithologies at depths of 300-800 km beneath the surface. Combined with isotopic measurements demonstrating a crustal signature [3] and extreme enrichment of trace elements [4]\, these samples appear consistent with production from melts of subducted crust. Petrological experiments have demonstrated that the carbonated oceanic crust produces low degree melts capable of generating the diamond-hosted assemblages observed during interaction with the overlying mantle [5]. \n\nUltimately\, verification of this model would benefit from quantitative evidence that the sub-lithospheric diamonds and/or their inclusions originate from transition zone depths. Compared with other types of inclusions in these diamonds\, majoritic garnets provide the best opportunity to accurately estimate the depth of diamond formation because their chemistry is known to vary as a function of pressure [e.g. 6]. However\, the available empirical barometers cannot be confidently applied to diamond-hosted inclusions which are observed as lone inclusions without any coexisting phase assemblages. Adoption of a machine learning approach has provided a novel solution to this problem\, allowing accurate predictions of diamond formation conditions [7].\n\n[1] Hirschmann\, M. & Dasgupta\, R. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture | Genealogies of Knowledge Production: Information\, Data\, and Algorithmic World-Making
DESCRIPTION:Genealogies of Knowledge Production:\n Information\, Data\, and Algorithmic World-Making\n \n Current controversies about Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, ranging from the future of work\, healthcare and the economy to surveillance and privacy\, national sovereignty\, and\, indeed\, human survival\, are deeply implicated in constructions of futurity. Many critiques of AI and algorithms center on questions of bias: the implication is that if the data encoded in algorithms was unbiased we could be assured of a more just future. While the concerns underlying these critiques are valid\, most anxieties about bias frame the problem too narrowly. Such critiques also deal inadequately with the imbrication of AI and algorithms with culture\, history\, and politics.\n \n What happens when we reframe the story of information\, Big Data and\, hence\, algorithms from the perspective of the Global South? In this talk\, I focus on two sites in postcolonial India: the role of information in development projects\, and the launch of the Aadhar project. My aim is to diagram a theoretical framework that moves away from universalist and singular narratives of information\, data\, and algorithms by proposing postcolonial and conjunctural accounts. Such accounts push back against the naturalization of information as self-evident and as a “thing” that can be disseminated\, transferred\, or produced as an object in order to assert its imbrication of in larger genealogies of knowledge production imbricated in coloniality\, empire\, nationalism\, and neoliberalism. I also argue for mining the glitch and the workaround or jugaad as opportunities for potentially interrupting statist and neoliberal projects of the informatization of social formations. I conclude by ruminating on what these accounts suggest about futurity as an affective-temporal regime.\n \nTrained as a cultural anthropologist\, Purnima Mankekar has conducted interdisciplinary research on television\, film\, and digital media\, and on publics/public cultures with a focus on the politics of affect. She is completing a book on affective labor and the production of futurities in the Business Process Outsourcing industry in Bengaluru\, India titled Future Tense: Affective Labor and Disjunctive Temporalities (co-authored with Akhil Gupta). Her new ethnographic project is on the sociopolitical implications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in India.\n \nHer teaching interests include digital and “virtual” anthropology\; theories of affect\; feminist anthropology and ethnography\; postcolonial and women of color feminism\; anthropological approaches to sexuality\, queer theory\, and queer of color critique\; and Asian American and South Asian Studies.\n\n*Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education. *
