SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

From its inception\, the U-M Herbarium has cataloged and described plants—both poisonous and beneficial to human health—and still serves that role today. See specimens of these plant and fungal “friends” and “foes” from the U-M Herbarium collection and learn about how the collection is used for drug discovery today.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mark Newman kicks off Complex Systems Seminar Series Sept 5 - 10th Floor Weiser Hall
DESCRIPTION:Please note this seminar is on the 10th FLOOR of Weiser Hall.\n\n2023 UM Henry Russel Lectureship winner\, Mark Newman will kick off our seminar series on the 10th floor of Weiser Hall on Tuesday\, September 5\, 2023 at 11:30am. \n\nCoffee and snacks will be available starting at 11:15 am. \n\nMark Newman is the Anatol Rapoport Distinguished University Professor Department of Physics and Center for the Study of Complex Systems and External Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. \n\nABSTRACT: One of the oldest of network problems is the ranking of individuals\, teams\, or commodities on the basis of pairwise comparisons between them. For example\, if you know which football teams beat which others in a particular year\, can you say which team is the best overall? This is a harder problem than it sounds because not all pairs of teams play games in a given season\, and also because the outcomes of the games can be ambiguous or contradictory. This talk will introduce the techniques used to solve such ranking problems\, with examples from games and sports\, consumer research and marketing\, and social hierarchies in both animal and human communities\, then ask how those techniques can be extended to answer a range of new questions about competition and ranking\, including the development of new computer algorithms for ranking\, questions about the varying patterns of competition in different sports\, and what happens when individuals or teams compete in multiple different ways.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | What Can Batteries Teach Us About Microelectronics (And Vice Versa)?
DESCRIPTION:Batteries and advanced microelectronic devices are two of the most important technologies today. In this talk\, I will share the common materials physics concepts shared among these two critical technologies. First\, I will present our research on resistive random-access memory\, a type of emerging memory cell that stores information using ions. Our work shows how composition phase separation among these ions enables such memory cells to retain information over time. Next\, I will present our research on the use of microfabricated electrodes to measure lithium reaction and diffusion rates in individual Li-ion battery particles. Using these electrodes\, we show that the microcracks in polycrystalline battery particles are necessary for the rapid charge and discharge of battery particles. Our work shows the crucial role of ion transport among these two important technologies.\n\nBiography: Yiyang Li is an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering at Olin College\, a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University\, and was a Harry Truman Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories. Prof. Li conducts research combining electrochemistry\, microelectronics\, and data science. He received the Intel Rising Star Faculty Award in 2022.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Gaussian kernelized graph Laplacian: Bi-stochastic normalization and eigen-convergence
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Eigen-data of graph Laplacian matrices are widely used in data analysis and machine learning\, such as dimension reduction by spectral embedding. Many graph Laplacian methods start by building a kernelized affinity matrix from high-dimensional data points\, which may lie on some unknown low-dimensional manifolds embedded in the ambient space. When clean manifold data are corrupted by high dimensional noise\, it can negatively influence the performance of graph Laplacian methods. In this talk\, we first introduce the use of bi-stochastic normalization to improve the robustness of graph Laplacian to high-dimensional outlier noise\, possibly heteroskedastic\, with a proven convergence guarantee under the manifold data setting. Next\, for the important question of eigen-convergence (namely the convergence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors to the spectra of the Laplace-Beltrami operator)\, we show that choosing a smooth kernel function leads to improved theoretical convergence rates compared to prior results. The proof is by analyzing the Dirichlet form convergence and constructing candidate approximate eigenfunctions via convolution with the manifold heat kernel. When data density is non-uniform on the manifold\, we prove the same rates for the density-corrected graph Laplacian. The theory is supported by numerical results. Joint work with Boris Landa and Nan Wu.\n\nTalk will be in-person and on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290
