SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:A Discussion of The Mishnah and its Place in History
DESCRIPTION:This one-day colloquium will reflect on the place and use of the Mishnah in the study of early Judaism\, Rabbinic Judaism\, and Christianity. Centered in the conversation is the publication of the new Oxford Annotated (2022)\, edited by Shaye J.D. Cohen and Hayim Lapin.\n\nThe event is comprised of two panels\, each of which will begin with two or three\, 10-15 minute presentations and follow with an open conversation among all participants. The first session (9-11am EST) will discuss the problems of translating the Mishnah in light of the experience of the new edition. The second session (11:30am-1:30pm EST) will instead address the very thorny issue of using the Mishnah for the study of Second Temple Judaism.\n\nRegister for this free\, virtual event here: https://tinyurl.com/5n677sua\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n** Schedule is set according to Eastern Daylight time / New York Time**\n\n9:00-11:00am EDT Session 1: Translation Issues relating to the publication of the Mishnah\n\nPhil Lieberman (Chair)\nShaye Cohen (Presenter)\nHayim Lapin (Presenter)\nMichal Bar Asher Siegal\nGregg Gardner\nRichard Sarason\nElizabeth Alexander\n\n\n11:30am-1:30pm EDT Session 2: The Mishnah and the study of Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins: To what extent and in what ways can or should we use the Mishnah?\n\nJonathan Kaplan (Chair)\nAdele Reinhartz (Presenter)\nSteven Fraade (Presenter)\nKrista Dalton (Presenter)\nKelley Coblentz Bautch\nGabriele Boccaccini\nRebecca Wollenberg\nPaula Fredricksen\nTal Ilan\nIshay Rosen-Zvi\nLawrence Schiffman

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Generalized entropy for general subregions in quantum gravity
DESCRIPTION:I will describe a construction of algebras of observables associated with local subregions in quantum gravity in the small G_N limit. This algebra consists of operators dressed to a semiclassical observer degree of freedom which serves as an anchor defining the subregion. I will argue that properly implementing the gravitational constraints on this algebra results in a type II von Neumann algebra\, which possesses a well-defined notion of entropy. Up to a state-independent constant\, this entropy agrees with the UV-finite generalized entropy of the subregion\, consisting of a Bekenstein-Hawking area term and a bulk entropy term. This gives an algebraic explanation for the finiteness of the generalized entropy\, and provides a number of tools for investigating aspects of semiclassical gravitational entropy\, including the generalized second law\, the quantum focusing conjecture\, and the quantum extremal surface prescription in holography.

Most organizations are interested in all majors.\n\nThe Fair is a first step. You will leave with more information about organizations' opportunities\, application process and a plan for next steps. You won’t leave the Fair with a job/internship offer.\n\nThe Fair is the first and only visit to campus for most organizations. Recruiters collect resumes\, screen candidates and refer to their website to start the application process. Ask these Fair recruiters about next steps and stay connected!\n\nSome organizations are returning for one-on-one interviews (virtual or on-campus) Check Handshake for one-on-one interview dates and deadlines \nAlso ask about next steps and stay connected with organizations that are not returning to campus\n \n\nFair dress is business professional or business casual. This means:\nDress slacks and shirt/tie\, skirt and blouse\, dress or a business suit\nNeed help building your professional attire? Plan to visit the University Career Center Clothes Closet \n \n\nWhat to Bring:\nCopies of your resume…plus a few extra for organizations you weren’t planning to meet\nA folder for carrying your resumes and any informational materials you collect from organizations.\nNo need for a cover letter\nPlease leave backpacks at home. With so many employers we don’t have space to store them\n\n\nAccommodation\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please indicate your accommodation requirements in this form\, preferably at least 14 days prior to the program. If you have any questions regarding access to our programs\, please don't hesitate to reach out to Alexis Schmidt at anschmi@umich.edu. To ensure sufficient time for arranging your requested accommodation(s) or exploring suitable alternatives\, we kindly request that you inform us as soon as possible. \n\nQuestions?\nemail us...we're happy to chat with you!\n\n\nNote\nAs you consider opportunities offered at career fairs: External organizations are not programs and activities of the University of Michigan and are included only because they may be of interest to members of the University community. Inclusion of any organization does not indicate University sponsorship or endorsement of that organization.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A mean-field version of Bank--El Karoui’s representation of stochastic processes
DESCRIPTION:We investigate a mean-field version of Bank--El Karoui's representation theorem of stochastic processes. Under different technical conditions\, we established some existence and uniqueness results. As motivation and first applications\, the results of mean-field representation provide a unified approach for studying various mean-field games (MFGs) in the setting with common noise and multiple populations\, including the MFG of timing and the MFG with singular control\, etc. As a crucial technical step\, a stability result was provided on the classical Bank--El Karoui’s representation theorem. It has its own interests and other applications\, such as deriving the stability results of optimizers (in the strong sense) for a class of optimal stopping and singular control problems.

This is even more common for children of color and for those whose adult family members are low income. In this webinar\, panelists will examine the scope of the issue and its implications for child well-being and security\, as well as opportunities for policy and practice to support these children and their adult household members\n\nPresenters:\n- Natasha Pilkauskas\, Gerald R. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Safety Switches: The Macroeconomic Implications of Time-Varying Asset Safety
DESCRIPTION:Safe assets are a cornerstone of the modern international financial system. I show the existence of a time-series dimension of safety: the perceived safety of an asset can oscillate over time\, with relevant real implications. I construct a text-based index from newspaper mentions\, the FLY\, to measure global demand for safe assets and flight-to-safety episodes\, and I estimate time-varying loadings on the index for a large dataset of sovereign bonds of all maturities from both advanced and emerging economies. I identify switches in a bond's safety through changes in the sign and statistical significance of its loading on the FLY. Safety switches are not uncommon\, both in advanced and in emerging economies\, they happen across credit rating classes\, and are not fully captured by changes in ratings. Safety switches also have important real implications: while a positive switch (i.e. becoming safe) is not expansionary\, a negative switch (i.e. becoming risky) depresses output by up to 0.7 percent for a year. Investment and government spending are particularly affected\, falling by as much as 3 and 2 percent\, respectively\, in the first two years after the switch. Positive safety switches also lead to an increase in debt\, as countries take advantage of their newly-gained safe status\, while negative switches lead to a decrease in debt and a persistent shortening of its maturity structure\, with long-term debt to GDP falling by 6 percentage points in the five years following the switch.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCEE Lecture. Closer to Michigan or Madrid? Reflections on Ireland’s Unique Geopolitical Position
DESCRIPTION:For more than two decades\, Irish politicians\, economists and legal scholars have commented on whether Ireland is “closer to Boston than Berlin” in its orientation. The U.S. and Europe are often presented as offering competing visions of prosperity in liberal democracies\, with different understandings of the role of government.\n\nIreland has a unique position (and not only in geographical terms) sitting between these two worldviews. Ireland has a close economic relationship with the U.S. Ireland’s culture and legal system has often drawn on American examples. However\, Ireland is also a Member State of the European Union\, is committed to the project of European economic integration and is bound by laws passed by its institutions.\n\nThis question of Ireland’s relationship to the US and Europe merits further consideration in light of more recent developments on both sides of the Atlantic. This lecture will consider how Ireland combines ideas and insights from both systems\, drawing on the wisdom of both Boston and Berlin\, both Michigan and Madrid. It will examine the pattern of legal\, cultural and political links between Ireland\, the U.S. and Europe. It will also emphasize the role that these ties have played in nurturing Ireland’s economic development and success.\n\nRossa Fanning was appointed as Attorney General of Ireland on 17 December 2022. In that role\, he attends Cabinet as the legal adviser to the Government and the chief law officer of the State. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General\, he was a Senior Counsel in private practice at the Irish Bar with a varied caseload spanning commercial law\, public law and judicial review\, professional negligence\, product liability\, defamation\, and privacy law. He graduated from University College Dublin with a First Class Honours BCL degree in 1997. He was awarded the Swift McNeill Memorial Prize\, a Postgraduate Research Scholarship by UCD\, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1999 after graduating from King’s Inns in the first place as the John Brooke Scholar. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and a University Fellowship to pursue an LL.M. at the University of Michigan\, where he graduated in 2000.\n\nThis event will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration is required at https://myumi.ch/AWDqj\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.
