SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jonathan Terhorst\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The phylogenetic birth-death model is widely used to study evolutionary processes like speciation and extinction\, as well as the spread of pathogens. In this talk\, I present some new theoretical and applied results concerning this model. Our first contribution is a scalable variational Bayesian method for inferring birth and death rates from very large quantities of serially-sampled genetic data. Our method produces results that are comparable to\, or better than\, existing MCMC-based approaches while being several orders of magnitude faster. We study the utility of our method for inferring present and historical epidemiological parameters for the COVID-19 pandemic. Our second contribution is theoretical\, and consists of proving that the models we are inferring in the first part of the talk are in fact statistically identifiable. This result contrasts with (though does not contradict) recent nonidentifability theorems for phylogenetic birth-death models that have received significant attention. Finally\, I will discuss some complementary hardness-of-estimation results which establish that\, even in identifiable model classes\, obtaining reliable inferences from finite amounts of data may be extremely challenging. \n\nThis is joint work with Brandon Legried and Caleb Ki.\nhttps://jthlab.github.io/

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Outsiders at Intercisa? An Image of Breastfeeding on the Roman Danube Frontier
DESCRIPTION:A Roman tombstone from the border town of Intercisa\, Hungary\, on the Danube preserves the portraits of a man\, his wife\, and four children. Clad in voluminous drapery\, and confronting the viewer in the rough-hewn style that was favored in many Roman provinces\, this stone portrait bears many features that make it recognizably Roman. Yet the bared breast of the wife who prepares to feed her baby is almost unique. This talk explores the cultural significance of this gesture and the insight it gives into the complex cultural commitments of this border region\, where Syrian diaspora soldiers shared life with a local Pannonian population. Here we see individuals navigating each of these cultures while further considering what it meant to them to also be Roman. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, U-M researchers\, professors\, graduate students\, or guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99996748051\n\nMeeting ID: 999 9674 8051\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Do ESG Ratings Do Any Good? Examining the Organizational and Social Consequences of Rating Corporate Virtue
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1990s\, ESG ratings were originally seen by proponents as a market mechanism that would help motivate improvements in corporate accountability. However\, recent critiques have questioned validity of these ratings\, raising concerns about whether they incentivize improvements in corporate behavior. In a series of studies\, we examine the organizational and social consequences of rating corporate social performance\, particularly within the domains corporate philanthropy and board gender diversity. We find compelling evidence that firm behavior and broader social norms can shift in response to these ratings\, albeit\, not always in ways that were intended. In light of recent critiques and the rise of the anti-ESG movement\, we consider the limitations and potential future of ESG ratings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AIM seminar: Quasi-periodic water waves
DESCRIPTION:We present a framework to compute and study two-dimensional water waves that are quasi-periodic in space and/or time. This means they can be represented as periodic functions on a higher-dimensional torus by evaluating along irrational directions. In the spatially quasi-periodic case\, we consider both traveling waves and the general initial value problem. In both cases\, the nonlocal Dirichlet-Neumann operator is computed using conformal mapping methods and a quasi-periodic variant of the Hilbert transform. We obtain traveling waves either as a generalization of the Wilton ripple problem or through bifurcation from large-amplitude periodic waves. In the temporally quasi-periodic case\, we devise a shooting method to compute standing waves with 3 quasi-periods as well as hybrid traveling-standing waves that return to a spatial translation of their initial condition at a later time. Many examples will be given to illustrate the types of behavior that can occur.\n\n[Contact: S. Alben]

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Nuclear Reactors\, Nuclear Weapons\, Neutrinos and Nonproliferation
DESCRIPTION:This talk has two goals. One is to introduce some of the technical issues associated with nuclear reactors and concerns of proliferation of fissile materials that can be used to construct a nuclear weapon. Examples are discussed\, including reactor fuel issues and possible neutrino monitoring of nuclear reactors. The second goal\, which is connected to the first\, is to describe the current landscape in the dangerous resurgence of nuclear weapons\, most especially in North Korea. Emphasis will be on science and technology's role in creating the threats and possibly mitigating them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Andrew Jacobson\, Northwestern University
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, Earth Scientists have hypothesized that CO2 outgassing during Large Igneous Province eruptions can acidify seawater and suppress biocalcification. To test this hypothesis\, our group has worked over the past decade to generate high-precision Ca isotope (δ44/40Ca) records spanning multiple candidate ocean acidification (OA) events\, including the Permian-Triassic boundary (P-Tr)\, Ocean Anoxic Event 1a (OAE1a)\, Ocean Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2)\, the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (K-Pg)\, and the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Notable patterns emerge when the records are aligned relative to operationally defined event boundaries/onsets. The P-Tr record exhibits a large and rapid negative δ44/40Ca excursion\, whereas all other records display similar signals\, including both negative and positive shifts before the boundaries\, negative excursions after the boundaries\, and positive recoveries. The consistently repeated pattern is striking given that the records represent different depositional settings\, archives\, mineralogies\, and durations. Complementary analyses of high-precision stable Sr isotope ratios (δ88/86Sr) offer a rich but underutilized hypothesis testing framework for constraining the fidelity and meaning of carbonate δ44/40Ca signals. The δ44/40Ca and δ88/86Sr values for OAE1a define a line with a slope of 0.19\, which is a value predictable from kinetic mass-fractionation theory. Interestingly\, δ44/40Ca and δ88/86Sr values for a dolostone deposited after the Marinoan Snowball Earth event and a limestone deposited before the Sturtian Snowball Earth event also yield lines with slopes of 0.19. Preliminary B isotope ratios (δ11B) for OAE1a covary with existing δ44/40Ca values in ways anticipated for carbonate system control. For OAE2\, foraminiferal δ44/40Ca values increase as tests become smaller and malformed. When the K-Pg dataset is plotted as δ44/40Ca vs. Sr/Ca and linearly regressed\, the intercept at Sr/Ca = 0 (“pure aragonite”) yields a δ44/40Ca value of -1.59‰\, which is equivalent to the equilibrium fractionation factor recently measured in bench-scale aragonite precipitation experiments. This seminar will interrogate hypotheses for explaining these and other observations\, including early diagenesis\, shifts in the Ca and Sr isotope compositions of seawater due to input-output flux perturbations\, and kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) during primary carbonate formation. Research is ongoing. If a KIE hypothesis prevails\, then the evidence may illuminate the candidate OA events as volcanically triggered biocalcification crises. Implications exist for several first-order topics\, including\, but not limited to\, linkages between solid and surface Earth processes\, mass extinctions\, OA dampening mechanisms\, biomineralization\, and development of decarbonization strategies for mitigating the anthropogenic climate crisis\, such as artificial ocean alkalinization.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Tata: The Global Corporation That Built Indian Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:From one of many merchant families in the colonial port city of Bombay\, making their fortunes in the cotton and opium trades\, the Tata business group ascended to the commanding heights of the Indian national economy by the time of independence in 1947 - and has remained at or near the top ever since. Tata companies spun textiles\, forged steel\, generated hydroelectric power\, and took to the skies by pioneering air travel. In parallel\, Tata-funded philanthropic institutions channelled transnational technology and knowledge flows in the realms of engineering\, social science\, medicine\, and atomic research. What explains this extraordinary resilience and diversification? What contestations and contradictions does it mask? Mircea Raianu's book argues that private corporations like Tata played a crucial role in the development of Indian capitalism by assuming quasi-sovereign functions – at times acting like a state\, at other times in direct opposition to state aims. Tata was both a “surrogate state” and a “state within a state” wielding power over domains of its own: company towns\, model villages\, scientific laboratories\, and universities. This talk explores the evolution of this fraught state-capital relationship in times of transition and crisis.\n\n*Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education. *

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Creating the 21st Century National Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:***Note: This Colloquium is in the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building\, Room 1109***\n\nAbstract\nThe Department of Energy’s national laboratory system was created in the wake of the Manhattan Project to create institutions that would steward advanced science and technology in the national interest. Today this comprises a system of 17 national laboratories that range from single-purpose science and applied energy laboratories to multi-purpose science and national security laboratories. Together these institutions are a critical element of U.S. leadership in S&T and an essential bridge between academia and industry. This talk will draw on examples from LLNL to highlight how we are working today to shape the environment and culture at the labs to meet the challenges of the 21st century\, from energy and climate to emerging and disruptive technology to national security.\n\nBio\nKimberly S. SUMMARY:Performance:Julian Lage wsg Elijah Wolf
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nA former child prodigy\, Julian Lage is now\, in his early 30s\, a veteran. He's collaborated with Gary Burton\, Jim Hall\, David Grisman\, Béla Fleck\, and Charles Lloyd\, as well as releasing albums as a soloist and leader. He comes to Michigan with a new release\, “Squint\,” that takes his music to a new level. Recording now for Blue Note Records\, the virtuoso guitarist reflected on the label’s storied history and the way his own music connected with it. The new album weds incisive\, expressive songwriting with the profound interplay Julian has honed over the past few years with his deft trio featuring bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King. “I felt like this was an opportunity to present new music born out of the Blue Note tradition as I’ve interpreted it\,” explains Julian\, who previously recorded for the label on The Nels Cline 4’s “Currents\, Constellations\,” and Lloyd’s “8: Kindred Spirits.”I absolutely love improvised music\, and I've always been fascinated by singer-songwriter music. For me\, the jazz that came out of Blue Note always engaged both sides of that\,” Julian says.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4203/4204 for more detail.
