Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700), many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However, as the pages on display attest, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\r\n\r\nThe word \u201cIllumination,\u201d from the Latin illuminare, \u201cto enlighten or to illuminate,\u201d refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece, or first page of text, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter, and even miniatures, that is, scenes with an independent narrative. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. This talk is open to UM community members.\r\n\r\nSpeaker: Kris Donaldson serves as the public advocate in the Office of Clean Water Public Advocate (OCWPA) within the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Her office ensures the public can report drinking water concerns through the statewide concerns reporting system. Kris joined state government as a drinking water engineer, regulating Wayne County community water supplies in accordance with the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act. She went on to supervise drinking water staff regulating more than 200 community water supplies in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and St. Clair counties. Yet what may otherwise be triumphant moments for the athletes and the nation are marred by Iran\u2019s domestic and international troubles. More often than not, Iranian athletes find themselves increasingly caught between the rock of an authoritarian state and the hard place of diasporic and foreign agendas which compete to use Iranian sports to further their own interests. Drawing from several recent examples to illustrate these dynamics, this talk also considers why frameworks used for making sense of sports, media, and politics elsewhere in the region may not be as fruitful for understanding the case of Iran. We find that tidal forces due to the Galaxy (which are much stronger in MOND than in Newtonian gravity) tend to align the major axes of the orbits of outer Kuiper belt objects with the direction towards the center of the galaxy. Such an alignment is seen in the orbits of the handful of outer Kuiper belt objects that are known at present. The observed alignment has previously led to the Planet Nine hypothesis: that there is a large undiscovered planet in the outer solar system. It is expected that in the near future surveys dedicated to the outer solar system as well as Dark Energy Survey, the Vera Rubin Telescope and CMB-S4 will discover many more outer Kuiper belt objects and settle the question of whether the observed alignment is due to Planet Nine, modified gravity or merely due to an observational bias of the existing surveys. MOND gravity deviates from Newtonian gravity when the field is weak. It was originally developed to account for galaxy rotation curves without invoking dark matter. While much of this work has focused on comparing Western European and East Asian heritages, there is a growing need to empirically examine other cultures and uncover new insights into how culture influences the mind. In this talk, I will examine the influence of ecology and geography on human activity, leading to the formation of organized systems of cultural practices and meanings known as \"ecocultural complexes.\" These complexes have given rise to diverse cultural zones we observe today. Outside of the modern West, most cultural zones emphasize an interdependent view of the self. Notably, however, non-Western cultural zones display significant variability. I will explore several non-Western cultural zones, such as Arab, East Asian, Latin American, and South Asian zones, and examine how these cultures may have played a substantial role in shaping the contemporary Western cultural zone. The Western cultural zone, in contrast to non-Western zones, prioritizes the self\u2019s independence over interdependence. By going beyond the conventional Western-East Asian comparison, this talk aims to broaden our understanding of the impact of culture on cognition, emotions, motivation, and behavior. It highlights the significance of exploring diverse cultural zones to gain deeper insights into the intricate relationship between culture and the human mind.\r\n\r\nPsychological Diversity across the Globe\r\nDoes culture influence our psychology and behavior \u2014 and if so, how? Touching subjects such as orthogonal polynomials, potential theory and of course differential equations. In this talk we will discuss a specific type of rational approximant, factorial expansions. In recent work with O. Costin and R. Costin we have developed a theory of dyadic expansions which improve the domain and rate of convergence when compared to the classical methods found in the literature. These results provide a general method for producing rational approximations of Borel summable series with locally integrable branch points. Surprisingly, these expansions capture the asymptoticly important Stokes phenomena. Additionally, we find applications in operator theory on Hilbert spaces providing new representations for (bounded and unbounded) positive and self-adjoint operators in terms of the semigroups and unitary groups they generate.
