SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Terrain-Aware Bipedal Locomotion
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Jessy Grizzle\n\nBipedal robots provide a path forward for autonomous systems to operate in human-designed environments seamlessly. They can traverse terrains non-compliant with wheeled robots and provide improved access to shelves and cabinets out of reach for quadrupeds and other mobile robots. Though their design offers many advantages over other platforms\, the consequential challenge of stability remains a glaring hindrance in realizing their true potential. To this end\, our work investigates the evolution of algorithmic strategies that enable these robots to traverse various terrains and actively engage with their surroundings dynamically. To mitigate the unreliability of walking in steep or slippery environments\, we first design and test a terrain-aware foot placement locomotion controller (ALIP-MPC) on a 20 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) Cassie robot.\n\nALIP-MPC displays improved results compared to foot placement methods that disregard terrain information. The controller is validated in simulation and hardware and performs better than other state-of-the-art foot placement methods. Subsequently\, we extend the ALIP-MPC method for a 30-DoF Digit where perception data is used to estimate terrain information online. The proposed method is a multi-stage receding horizon algorithm that utilizes properties of the Angular Momentum Linear Inverted Pendulum (ALIP) model for fast execution speeds. Initial results of the fully integrated locomotion controller are shown in simulation and hardware.\n\nLastly\, we broaden the concept of terrain-aware control to encompass interaction with the environment in diverse whole-body tasks. We develop Kinodynamic Fabrics for reactive whole-body control on a 30-DoF Digit robot. This method integrates optimization fabrics within a whole-body nullspace control schema to achieve a range of motions\, including balancing and walking.\n\nZoom password: bipeds

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Seminar | Physical Signatures of Fermion-Coupled Axions
DESCRIPTION:While there is an abundance of experiments searching for axion dark matter (DM) via its electromagnetic coupling\, there are fewer utilizing its derivative coupling to electrons and nucleons. This direct coupling generates dynamical effects through the fermion spin\, and therefore spin-polarized targets are a naturally useful target. We find that spin-polarized or magnetized analogs of layered dielectric haloscopes can be powerful probes at both radio frequencies\, with sensitivity to currently unexplored parameter space\, and optical frequencies\, with sensitivity comparable to current astrophysical bounds.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Schmidt rank/strength and the singular locus
DESCRIPTION:Given a multivariate polynomial f\, Schmidt rank/strength is a quantity defined algebraically which measures its non-degeneracy. In 1985 Schmidt introduced this quantity and showed that over the complex numbers it's closely related to a geometric quantity measuring non-degeneracy: the codimension of the singular locus of (f=0). Ananyan and Hochster proved a similar relationship holds for algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic\, but with very weak bounds. I will present a recent result giving strong bounds in any characteristic which doesn't divide the degree of f\, and discuss upcoming work on the case deg(f) = char(k) = p.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. From the ‘Imam of Atheism’ to ‘Orthodox Iran’: Russia and Shi’a Islamist Movements\, 1970s-Present.
DESCRIPTION:Since Russia’s intervention into Syria in 2015\, Russia’s close ties with the al-Assad regime in Syria\, the Islamic Republic of Iran\, and Shi’a militias like Hezbollah have become ever more prominent. Tehran has become one of main suppliers of drones to Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine\, and high officials within the Russian Orthodox Church have even spoken of ideological affinity with the Shi’a theocracy in Tehran\, speaking of the need to transform the Russian Federation into an “Orthodox Iran.” Where did these unlikely ties between Russia and transnational Shi’a networks emerge? How did Russian actors come to see themselves as aligned with Shi’a actors\, and how did the latter go from seeing in the Soviet Union “the Imam of atheism” to a potential partner against American imperialism?\n\nIn this lecture\, Timothy Nunan (University of Regensburg) will explore how this alliance of convenience between Moscow\, Tehran and Damascus emerged out of the Cold War geopolitics of the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing on new sources in Russian\, Persian\, and Arabic\, Nunan will explore how an unlikely group of actors\, from Syrian generals to Lebanese Shi'a clerics to Soviet Central Asian Sunni clerics\, set aside Cold War clichés about Islam and Communism to sew the seeds for what is today an expanded \"Axis of Resistance.\"\n \n Timothy Nunan is Professor for Transregional Cultures of Knowledge in the Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies at the University of Regensburg. Prior to holding this position\, he was Acting Chair in the Department of Global History at the Free University of Berlin. There\, he also led a Volkswagen Foundation Freigeist Research Group devoted to the history of Islamism during the Cold War. His research focuses on international history\, Russian and Soviet history\, and the history of the modern Middle East. His first book\, Humanitarian Invasion: Global Development in Cold War Afghanistan\, examined the history of international development in Afghanistan during the Cold War\, looking in particular at the role of the Soviet Union and Western humanitarian NGOs. His current book project explores Islamist internationalism from the 1950s to the 1980s. Prior to his positions in Germany\, Dr. Nunan was a Harvard Academy Scholar and received his D.Phil. in History from the University of Oxford\, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.\n \n WCEE is pleased to host Professor Nunan as part of its collaboration with the Leibniz ScienceCampus at the University of Regensburg.\n \n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Health Equity Leadership Series
DESCRIPTION:The Health Equity Leadership Series is a speaker series that welcomes leaders in the fields of nursing and healthcare to share their expertise and engage members of the UM community in critical thinking\, learning\, and dialogue about topics in health equity. Our goal is to expose UM faculty\, staff\, students\, and alumni to some of the most pressing and relevant topics in health equity and nursing. Attendees will be challenged to learn\, unlearn\, and expand upon their own views while also networking with leaders who have a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in healthcare.\n\nJoin us on September 13th as we welcome Dr. Nao Hagiwara\, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. The core goal of her research program is to develop theory-driven interventions that are designed to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare and health and ultimately promote social equity. She grounds her health disparities research in social psychology theories of intergroup bias and examines mechanisms through which stereotyping\, prejudice\, and discrimination contribute to the well-documented racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare and health. Dr. Hagiwara’s presentation will highlight the central role of patient-provider communication processes as the key mechanism underlying racial disparities in both patient-centered outcomes and clinical outcomes.\n\nThis event series is hosted by the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. All UM students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni are welcome to attend. Please register on UM Sessions and send any questions about the Health Equity Leadership Series to Emily Herzog (epawlik@umich.edu).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Anticolonial and Antiracist Approaches to Language Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Anticolonial and antiracist pedagogical frameworks allow us to intentionally confront and dismantle barriers to inclusive language learning. In this workshop\, we will first examine how language education is connected to broader\, societal-level antiracist and anticolonial movements and therefore uniquely situated to enact anticolonial and antiracist pedagogies. We will then engage in collective reflection and planning as we explore specific strategies for implementing such pedagogies while also supporting language proficiency goals. In addition to philosophical considerations\, participants will leave with concrete ideas\, activities\, and frameworks that can be applied to a variety of languages and levels.\n\nL. J. Randolph Jr.\, Ed.D.\, is an assistant professor of World Language Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Randolph’s teaching career has spanned 20 years\, including a decade as a Spanish and ESL teacher at the secondary level. His research and teaching focus on various critical issues in language education\, including teaching Spanish to heritage and native speakers\, incorporating justice-centered/anti-racist/anti-colonial pedagogies\, and centering Blackness and Indigenousness. Dr. Randolph is a co-editor of the book How We Take Action: Social Justice in PK-16 Classrooms. He is the president-elect of ACTFL and past president of FLANC and AATSP-NC.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: Treeing Borel quasi-trees
DESCRIPTION:We give an introduction to descriptive combinatorics: the study of \"definable\" graphs\, colorings\, set families\, etc. on nice topological spaces such as the reals. We then present one concrete result in this area\, showing that every definable graph whose components are \"approximately tree-like\" may be turned into a genuine forest with the same components in a definable manner. This is joint work with Antoine Poulin\, Ran Tao\, and Anush Tserunyan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics -- Grassmann Polytopes
DESCRIPTION:The amplituhedron is an object introduced by physicists in 2013 arising from their study of scattering amplitudes which has garnered much recent attention from physicists and mathematicians alike. Mathematically\, it is a linear projection of a nonnegative Grassmannian to a smaller Grassmannian\, via a map induced by a totally positive matrix. A Grassmann polytope\, or Grasstope\, is a generalization of the amplituhedron\, defined to be such a projection by any matrix\, removing one of the positivity conditions. In this talk\, I will discuss joint work with Dmitrii Pavlov and Lizzie Pratt in which we study these objects\, with hope that we may gain new insights by broadening our horizons and studying all Grasstopes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:On the Design of Paid Sick Leave: A Structural Approach
DESCRIPTION:What is the optimal paid sick leave system? To answer this question\, I combine individual-level data on paid sick leave claims with a model of sick pay insurance provision. I start by providing evidence that workers respond to the monetary incentives induced by the benefit scheme. I also document that workers behavior varies with the day of the week they fall sick. I use these patterns to inform a model of sick pay insurance. In the model\, risk-averse workers face a health shock and decide how many days to be on leave. Workers are insured by a risk-neutral social planner who chooses the optimal contract to maximize social welfare\, considering workers' behavioral responses. Social welfare is a function of workers'\; utility and the potential production losses induced by sick pay provision. The main empirical challenge in estimating the model is to disentangle the underlying distribution of health from workers' preferences. To overcome this challenge\, I combine the individual-level data on sick pay utilization with detailed medical assessments of recovery times associated with each health condition. This strategy allows me to construct the underlying distribution of health without imposing parametric assumptions. To estimate workers' preference parameters\, I exploit the day of the week on which a sick leave claim is filed as a quasi-exogenous shifter of the temptation to extend a sick leave claim as the main source of variation. Finally\, I use the estimated model to derive the optimal sick pay contract and estimate the welfare gains from its implementation. I find that\, relative to the current system\, the optimal system would provide more insurance for short-term sickness and less insurance\, i.e.\, lower replacement rates\, for longer sickness spells. I estimate that workers are willing to give up 1.53% of their earnings to be insured under the optimal policy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Studying Properties of the Higgs Boson with the High-Luminosity LHC
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has necessitated the development of a large-scale physics program measuring the properties of the Higgs mechanism and searching for new physics associated with it. Within the next decade\, the LHC will undergo multiple upgrades to dramatically increase the luminosity of the LHC. The resulting data will be almost a factor of ten larger than our current collected data\, allowing for precision measurements of the properties of the Higgs. In this talk\, I will discuss some of the more exciting properties of the Higgs currently being explored with the ATLAS experiment\, as well as future physics that may be accessible with the larger dataset.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar - Cohen-Macaulayness and determinantal ideals
DESCRIPTION:Cohen-Macaulay rings are a well-studied class of rings that have been used in many areas of math\, including algebraic geometry and combinatorics. In this talk\, we introduce Cohen-Macaulay rings and some of their properties. Along the way\, we will see some examples\, including rings defined via ideals generated by determinants of certain matrices. If time permits\, we will outline how Cohen-Macaulayness and determinantal ideals can be applied in the field of algebraic statistics to study varieties defined by moments of statistical distributions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic geometry seminar: Nonexistence of exceptional bundles on P^3 with maximal possible ranks
DESCRIPTION:Vector bundles E with Hom*(E\, E)=C are called exceptional\, and they play an important role in the study of derived categories and stable sheaves. Unlike P^1 and P^2\, classifying exceptional bundles on P^3 is a challenging problem. In this talk we introduce new techniques to approach this problem\, by studying stable spherical bundles on quartic surfaces. We show the first nonexistence results: there is no exceptional bundle on P^3 with degree d and maximal possible rank 2d^2+1 when |d|>3. We will also discuss many future developments on this program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Educational choices and lifetime hysteresis: Disparities in college enrollment and dropout behavior.
DESCRIPTION:Every young individual faces a pivotal decision upon graduating from high school: whether to enroll in college or enter the labor market. High unemployment rates during this sensitive period have opposing effects on this decision. On one hand\, it imposes financial constraints\, hindering individuals' ability to afford tuition costs\, and on the other\, it lowers the opportunity cost of college stemming from lower foregone wages. The relative importance of each of these mechanisms is contingent upon income levels. Specifically\, periods marked by high unemployment rates elevate the likelihood of college dropouts among low-income individuals\, while simultaneously suffering hysteresis effects of entering and staying in the labor force during wage stagnation. Conversely\, high-income individuals are more likely to avoid these hysteresis effects by using college enrollment as a tool to strategically choose better labor market entry conditions. I built a dynamic model to quantify the lifetime effects of experiencing an economic recession during sensitive times such as high school graduation and while being enrolled in college. High-income individuals exhibit remarkable resilience to the influence of economic downturns\, using college enrollment to mitigate the disruptive effects of business cycles. Conversely\, low-income individuals\, who would typically abstain from college enrollment\, do experience some repercussions during recessions due to adverse conditions prevailing in the labor market. However\, it is the cohort of middle-low income individuals that emerges as the most vulnerable to the sway of economic fluctuations. The state of the economy during these sensitive periods significantly shapes their lifetime trajectories\, profoundly impacting their choices regarding college enrollment and the decision to persist or withdraw from educational pursuits\, thus cementing the enduring hysteresis effects generated by recessions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Curator Pablo Alvarez\, from U-M Library's Special Collections Research Center\, talks about items in the adjacent exhibit\, \"Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut\" — a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. This is a hybrid event\, so you can join in person (Hatcher Gallery) or via Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/96318142374). If you attend in person\, allow extra time to view the exhibit!\n\nThroughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Set Valued HJB Equations
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we introduce a notion of set valued PDEs. The set values have been introduced for many applications\, such as time inconsistent stochastic optimization problems\, multivariate dynamic risk measures\, and nonzero sum games with multiple equilibria. One crucial property they enjoy is the dynamic programming principle (DPP). Together with the set valued Itô formula\, which is a key component\, DPP induces the PDE. In the context of multivariate optimization problems\, we introduce the set valued Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations and established its wellposedness. In the standard scalar case\, our set valued PDE reduces back to the standard HJB equation. \n\nOur approach is intrinsically connected to the existing theory of surface evolution equations\, where a well-known example is mean curvature flows. Roughly speaking\, those equations can be viewed as first order set valued ODEs\, and we extend them to second order PDEs. Another difference is that\, due to different applications\, those equations are forward in time (with initial conditions)\, while we consider backward equations (with terminal conditions). The talk is based on a joint work with Prof. Jianfeng Zhang.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:UMich: Healthcare Moneyball – PhD Position in Healthcare Consulting with IQVIA!
DESCRIPTION:Why Moneyball?\n\nNo worries\, we aren’t looking for candidates with backgrounds in sports\, reading Michael Lewis novels\, or indulging in Brad Pitt movies. In the early 2000s\, the Oakland Athletics baseball team implemented enhanced statistical insights to understand the real value of players\, as opposed to “old-school” approaches that are outdated\, subjective\, and often flawed. Using enhanced insights\, the A’s remained a competitive baseball team despite having limited funds to pay high-value players and managers – their unique approach to better gain insight about players had ushered in an era of new thinking to the game and enhanced insights are now a necessity to “play ball” in every industry.\n\nIn our world of healthcare\, ongoing changes in patient insurance coverage\, continued impacts from COVID-19\, increasing industry consolidation\, and the growth in expensive transformative therapeutics continue to challenge the life sciences landscape. These changes at a macro-level have ripple effects across the country. For example\, the “greying” of the US is leading to approximately 15 M people enrolling in Medicare over the next ten years\, but this impact is likely to increase more so in specific states and geographies. Furthermore\, the growth in high deductibles continue to drive higher costs across the landscape of various treatment options.\n\nAs a result\, we support our clients by developing “Moneyball” like solutions to provide better insights for our clients to adapt to a demanding market. Our team uses the power of healthcare data to help manufacturers measure the impact of market access on brand performance and the cascading influence this has on how prescribers and patients gain access to innovative therapies. We support manufacturers by providing deep insights into the geographic variations of patient\, insurer\, and prescriber behaviorand thereby help manufacturers implement more effective strategies for sales execution\, insurer contracting\, net revenue optimization\, and all varieties of patient assistance programs.\n\nPlease join for a deeper dive into the type of work IQVIA’s Market Access Strategy Consulting team does daily. You will hear from two of our top Principals – Ross Perak and Sayantan Niyogi. Access represents one of the most critical barriers to patients accessing the therapies they need. Health insurers restrict patient access to therapies that carry less value for them\, posing an obvious puzzle for us to solve.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Ukrainian Film Series: \"Mr. Jones\" Screening
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Film Days will start this Wednesday\, September 13th 6-9 pm in MLB Auditorium 3 with a screening of “Mr. Jones” film - an important new historical drama with a very contemporary context. Released in the US in spring 2020\, it sheds long overdue light on one of Stalin’s worst crimes\, while also serving as a timely reminder that today’s talk of fake news is actually nothing new.\n\nWritten by Andrea Chalupa and directed by the Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter Agnieszka Holland\, this joint Polish\, Ukrainian\, and British production follows one man’s struggle to expose Stalin’s man-made famine in Ukraine\, a crime the Soviet regime was desperate to hide from the outside world.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Harbingers of Dreams Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome Teresa Tolliver to the University of Michigan and celebrate the opening of her exhibition *Harbingers of Dreams* in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nAbout the exhibition and artist:\nBorn in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\n*Teresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts. This exhibition is part of LSA’s fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.*
