SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

It would be awesome to finally get to use one or both of those :)\n\nhttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1VhMedhRhygnfAQt7JbYUjV4g5WgbCNiL\n\nThe first resource in that folder (Baldinger) isn't an observation protocol\, but some examples of peer observations debriefs. \"They illustrate three different modes you could do a peer observation in. One is \"observer is here to give constructive feedback\"\, one is \"observer is here to learn\"\, and the third is \"we are learning together by having one person teach\, the other observe\, and then discussing\" (Katie).\n\nOur agenda for next week will be to share:\n- what we want to get out of observations as an observer or observee\n- what we noticed or learned looking through observations protocols or articles\n\nThen\, if we have time to start in real time\, we can actually start to make some pairs (although this may happen asynchronously instead!)

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Developing a measure to assess racial equity-oriented social and emotional learning practices
DESCRIPTION:Despite the growing interest in social and emotional learning (SEL) implementation in K-12 settings\, few measures exist to assess teachers’ SEL practices. Furthermore\, existing measures of teachers’ SEL practices do little to explicitly address issues of equity. In this talk\, we describe the interactive mixed-method approach we took in developing the Racial Equity-oriented Social and Emotional Learning (REQSEL) practices measure\, a valid and reliable means of assessing teachers’ racial equity-oriented SEL practices on a large scale.\n\nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: \"Probing the structures and reactions of molecules at catalytic solid-liquid interfaces\"
DESCRIPTION:The ChE Seminar Series features guest speakers from various research backgrounds throughout the year. ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nAbstract: Widespread adoption of renewable forms of energy and feedstocks is likely to require much more catalytic processing in the liquid phase. Adapting catalysts optimized for converting fossil-fuel-derived hydrocarbons to handle renewable and recycled carbon is a major challenge\, due to vast differences in volatility and solubility. Solvent effects arising from covalent and non-covalent interactions alter behaviors at solid surfaces and in porous catalytic materials\, where interactions are strongly influenced by partitioning of molecules between the bulk liquid phase and the surface or pore volume. Nanoscale structuring of solvent molecules near these surfaces alters mobility and promotes or prevents adsorption of reactive molecules near active sites. We probe these effects at a molecular level using operando magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR\, which is beginning to reveal the origins of solvent-induced activity and selectivity trends in heterogeneous catalysis.\n\nBio: Susannah Scott is a Distinguished Professor in both Chemical Engineering and in Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She received her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Iowa State University\, under the direction of Jim Espenson and Andreja Bakac\, for her work on the activation of O2 and transition metal-catalyzed oxidation mechanisms. She was awarded a NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship for work with Jean-Marie Basset at the Institut de recherches sur la catalyse (CNRS) in Lyon\, France. In 1994\, she joined the faculty of the University of Ottawa (Canada)\, where she was named a Canada Research Chair. In 2003\, she moved to the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, where she currently holds the Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Chair in Sustainable Catalysis and is Chair of the Santa Barbara Division of the University of California’s Academic Senate. She is an Executive Editor for ACS Catalysis\, and a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science. Her research interests include the design of heterogeneous catalysts with well-defined active sites for the conversion of conventional and unconventional carbon-based feedstocks\, as well as environmental catalysts to promote air and water quality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:899 Seminar Series: Marcia Fampa\, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe develop a branch-and-bound algorithm for the D-optimality problem (D-opt)\, a central problem in statistical design theory\, based on two bounds derived from convex relaxations\, the ``natural bound'' and the ``Γ-bound''. We describe a procedure to fix variables based on convex duality. We demonstrate that the Γ-bound for the binary version of D-opt with a particular variable fixing is precisely the ``complementary Γ-bound'' for the so-called ``Data-Fusion problem''. Further\, we present theoretical results showing some relations between different bounds. We propose local-search heuristics for D-opt and analyze different strategies to compute search directions and step sizes for each iteration of them. Finally\, we present numerical experiments concerning a B&B algorithm based on our results. This is a joint work with Jon Lee and Gabriel Ponte.\n\nBio:\nMarcia Fampa is a Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)\, where she has been since 1997. She is at the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE)\, at UFRJ\, where she has supervised more than 32 PhD and master's students. She was a board member of the Brazilian Society of Operations Research (SOBRAPO). Marcia did her undergraduate studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ)\, receiving an engineering degree in 1987. She received her PhD Degree in Systems and Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1996. In 1995 and in 2005 she was a visiting researcher at the University of Iowa. She is currently a research visitor at the University of Michigan. Her main research interest is Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP)\, with a focus on the development of convex relaxations for MINLP problems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - \"The causes and consequences of social interactions\"
DESCRIPTION:Animal social behavior emerges from interactions among individuals\, therefore\, it is important to understand both the mechanisms that shape interactions and their consequences. Because most animals need to be in proximity to interact\, individual differences in animal movements are especially important for determining who interacts with whom. Furthermore\, the environment can shape the ways in which animals interact\, for example by impacting their movement patterns. Social interactions in turn determine population-level processes\, such as information flow and disease transmission\, which can impact fitness and shape the evolution of sociality. In this talk\, I will examine various causes and consequences of social interactions with examples from social insects and birds using lab experiments\, field observations\, models\, and social network analysis. Uncovering the causes and consequences of social interactions is essential for understanding the emergence of social behavior.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Astronomy 2023-2024 Colloquium Series Presents
DESCRIPTION:\"The ongoing hunt to detect radio emission from the Tau Bootis exoplanetary system\"\n\nOne of the most important properties of exoplanets has not yet been directly detected despite decades of searching: the presence of a magnetic field. Observations of an exoplanet’s magnetic field would yield constraints on its planetary properties that are difficult to study\, such as its interior structure\, atmospheric escape and dynamics\, and any star-planet interactions. The presence of magnetic fields on gas giants also affects the understanding of their origins and evolution. Additionally\, magnetic fields may contribute to the habitability of terrestrial exoplanets. Observing planetary auroral radio emission is the most promising method to detect exoplanetary magnetic fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Joint CLaSP/MIPSE seminar | The Giant Planets as Unique Laboratories for Space Plasma Processes
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis talk will introduce space plasma processes in the environments of giant planets and explore them through the lens of spacecraft measurements. The aim is to present a high-level overview of what we learn about planetary environments by virtue of such measurements\, both remotely and in situ. Plasma waves are responsible for the energization and heating of charged particles and energy transport in the environments of giant planets. They play a central role in auroral and radiation belt dynamics\, moon/ring coupling with the magnetosphere\, and driving atmospheric loss. \nThe environments of giant planets also provide unique access to the extremities of the parameter space to explore fundamental plasma physics\, not seen anywhere else in the solar system. An example is the low-altitudes of Jupiter\, where the plasma is ultra-magnetized (fce/fpe ~ 10^3 – 10^4). Another is the helio-centric distances of the orbits of giant planets\, where the Mach numbers can exceed 100\, affording opportunities to experimentally test limits of wave-particle interactions and collisionless shock wave theory\, respectively.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nAli H. Sulaiman joined the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota in 2022. He received his Ph.D. in Space Physics at Imperial College London in 2016. His research specializes in the physics of plasma waves in gas giant systems\, and their critical role in the dynamics of their auroras\, magnetospheres\, and ionospheres. His research portfolio is built on his involvement in NASA’s Juno mission to Jupiter\, NASA/ESA’s Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and ESA’s future Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer mission to Jupiter. Ali was the recipient of the 2019 University of Iowa Postdoctoral Scholar Excellence Award\, the 2017 International Union of Radio Science Young Scientists Award\, and the 2016 Springer Thesis Prize (Recognizing Outstanding PhD Research).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Seminar: Floquet Hamiltonians - spectrum and dynamics
DESCRIPTION:The last decade has witnessed tremendous experimental progress in the study of \"Floquet media\,\" crystalline materials whose properties are altered by time-periodic parametric forcing. Theoretical advancements\, however\, have so far been achieved through discrete and approximate models. Understanding these materials from their underlying\, first-principle PDE models\, however\, remains an open problem. \n\nSpecifically\, semi-metals such as graphene are known to transform into insulators under periodic driving. While traditionally this phenomenon is modeled by a spectral gap\, in PDE models no such gaps are conjectured to form. How do we reconcile these seemingly contradictory statements? We show that the driven Schrödinger equation possesses an “effective gap” – a novel and physically relevant relaxation of a spectral gap. Adopting a broader perspective\, we study the influence of time-periodic forcing on a general band structure. A spectrally-local notion of stability is formulated and proven\, using methods from periodic homogenization theory.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Who “Invented” Identity Politics?: The Role of Twentieth Century Frameworks and Histories in the Twenty-First Century Debate
DESCRIPTION:One of the striking features of contemporary political commentary and related historical work is the denunciation of \"identity politics\" by those on both the right and the left of the political spectrum. Both sides in the debate deploy historical understandings of “when” identity politics was “invented\,” but neither is very self-conscious about the histories they deploy or the history of those histories. More than they may realize\, a politically informed search for and claims about an “unidentified” political subject\, beginning in the “Progressive” era and continuing through the twentieth century\, has hugely influenced perspectives on both “sides” of the twentieth century debate.\n\nTerrence J. (Terry) McDonald has returned to the University of Michigan Department of History after serving as interim and permanent dean of the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts for eleven years and director of the Bentley Historical Library for nine. As professor of history and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor he has written and taught in the history of the American city and is currently finishing a book manuscript contracted by the University of Chicago Press entitled: “Close Encounters: Jane Addams\, Johnny Powers\, and the Progressive Political Imagination.”\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Multi-Gap Topological Physics: Geometrical Notions\, Physical Phases and Novel Responses
DESCRIPTION:I will review recent work on multi-gap topological states. These phases are characterized by topological structures that cannot be captured by advances in more conventional symmetry-based topological classifications schemes. Upon utilizing new insights into connections with general geometric identities I will elucidate the structure of these phases and highlight physical signatures in both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium settings. These signatures are increasingly finding pathways to the laboratory in contexts that range from meta-materials and quantum simulators to electronic and phononic structures in real material candidates. As a highlight I will address how this understanding vice versa also relates to new takes on formulating novel quantum geometrical framework that can be probed by physical responses.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nOur lab integrates biomolecular engineering\, biomaterials\, and bioanalytical chemistry approaches to address therapeutic and diagnostic challenges across cancer and other diseases. In the therapeutics arena\, RNA is experiencing a renaissance since the recent clinical successes of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. By leveraging the sequence and structural versatilities of RNA\, we engineer multifunctional RNA macromolecules as genetic tools\, immunomodulatory materials\, and generic building blocks. Towards overcoming analytical barriers in clinical diagnostics\, I will highlight work in developing and translating ultrasensitive single-molecule detection technologies for measuring low abundance protein biomarkers.

A longtime thorn in Putin’s side\, she was declared a “foreign agent” by Russia in 2021 and has lived in exile ever since. She is also a cofounder of the independent news service and media outlet Mediazona\, and cofounder of UnicornDAO\, a collector’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) dedicated to collecting and incubating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) created by female\, non-binary\, and LGBTQ+ artists. She has spoken before the US Congress\, British Parliament and European Parliament. Among her many artistic achievements\, she collaborated with Banksy on his “Dismaland&#039\;&#039\; exhibition and created an immersive experience at the Saatchi Gallery in London. SUMMARY:Performance:Shakti: 50th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Shakti: 50th Anniversary Tour\nFeat. John McLaughlin\, Zakir Hussain\, & Shankar Mahadevan\nwith very special guest Béla Fleck\n\nFollowing the Summer 2023 release of This Moment – their first new studio album in 46 years – revolutionary ensemble Shakti will continue to discover and explore the musical common ground bridging East and West on an exclusive US tour marking the 50th anniversary since their first concerts.\n\nBorn in the mid-1970s out of the deep artistic and spiritual connection bonding British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain\, Shakti’s cross-cultural musical conversation dissolved boundaries with uncommon passion\, grace\, and dexterity\, awakening subsequent generations of musicians to the possibilities of new creative approaches in the process. The unprecedented transcontinental collaboration forged the template for what is often called “world music.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion\, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians and fans around the world.\n\nAlongside McLaughlin and Hussain\, today’s Shakti features vocalist Shankar Mahadevan\, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan\, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram). Joining Shakti will be another performer dedicated to intermingling and transcending genres: banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck\, who will open the performances with a solo set.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mighty Poplar
DESCRIPTION:Traditional bluegrass from new acoustic stalwarts\n\nAt its heart\, bluegrass music is about what happens when you commit to the moment. The joy of improvisation keeps the music fresh\, and the fun of crafting ideas on the fly keeps the musicians on their toes. This true spirit of bluegrass infuses the self-titled record from Mighty Poplar\, a new all-star roots project featuring Andrew Marlin of Watchhouse\, Noam Pikelny and Chris Eldridge of Punch Brothers\, and bassist Greg Garrison (Leftover Salmon).\nThough Pikelny\, Eldridge\, Garrison all knew each other from their early work with Punch Brothers\, impromptu backstage jams with Marlin at festivals across the country were the key that unlocked the project. A lifelong song collector\, Marlin selected and sang lead on most of the songs here\, bringing classics as well as deep cuts from greats like Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard\, John Hartford\, Bob Dylan\, Leonard Cohen\, and Norman Blake. The playing is just about as amazing as you would expect given the group’s membership\, but it’s never overstated or showy. This is a bluegrass supergroup that has been tearing up stages all over the place since the release of their self-titled debut album at the end of March\, and we are excited to welcome them for their first Ark show!\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4127/4128 for more detail.
