SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Astronomy 2023-2024 DEI Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"My journey from rural Colorado to becoming an Astronomer\"\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss my life journey to becoming an Astonomer. My childhood\, career path\, and current identities give me the empathy to understand the barriers that exist for underrepresented groups in academia. I grew up in a low socioeconomic environment in a small rural town in Colorado. We lived under the poverty line and I am a first-generation college student. My hometown had higher-than-average rates of poverty\, teen pregnancy\, and drug overdose deaths. During my childhood\, my family dealt with alcoholic\, mental health\, and drug problems. I became interested in astronomy early in high school after attending a public star party. Subsequently\, I received a scholarship to attend Astronomy Camp at the University of Arizona (UofA) and this camp influenced me greatly in choosing astronomy as a career. I also received a full-ride scholarship to attend UofA for my undergraduate degree and without this support I might have not been able to attend college. Today\, I am disabled and identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. My lived experience helped me personally understand how public outreach and mentoring can have a profound impact on an individual’s life and help increase Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) in Astronomy.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Kean Ming Tan\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The expected shortfall is defined as the average over the tail below (or above) a certain quantile of a probability distribution. The expected shortfall regression provides powerful tools for learning the relationship between a response variable and a set of covariates while exploring the heterogeneous effects of the covariates. In the health disparity research\, for example\, the lower/upper tail of the conditional distribution of a health-related outcome\, given covariates\, is often of importance. Motivated by the idea of using Neyman-orthogonal scores to reduce sensitivity to nuisance parameters\, we consider a computationally efficient two-step procedure for estimating the expected shortfall regression coefficients. We establish explicit non-asymptotic bounds on the resulting estimator that lay down the foundation for performing statistical inference under different scenarios: (i) classical setting with $p<n$\; (ii) high-dimensional setting with $p>n$\; and (iii) under heavy-tailed random noise. \n\nhttp://www.keanmingtan.com/

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Countering Infrastructures of Impunity with Performance and Creative Arts
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on her forthcoming book\, *Infrastructures of Impunity*\, Elizabeth F. Drexler argues that the creation and persistence of impunity for the perpetrators of the Cold War Indonesian genocide (1965-66) is not only a legal status but also a cultural and social process. Impunity for the initial killings and for subsequent acts of political violence has many elements: bureaucratic\, military\, legal\, political\, educational\, and affective. Although these elements do not always work at once—at times\, some are dormant while others are ascendant—taken together\, all elements can be described as a unified entity\, a dynamic infrastructure whose existence explains and accounts for the persistence of impunity. For instance\, truth-telling\, a first step in many responses to state violence\, did not undermine the infrastructure but instead bent to it. Creative and artistic responses to revelations about the past\, however\, have begun to undermine the infrastructure by countering its temporality\, affect\, social stigmatization and demonstrating its contingency and specific actions\, policies and processes that would begin to dismantle it.\n \nELIZABETH F. DREXLER is an associate professor of anthropology and director of Peace and Justice Studies. She has been working in Indonesia since 1996\, focusing on issues of human rights and state violence. Her research projects explore how societies address the legacies of political violence\, emphasizing the relationships among institutions\, transnational interventions\, historical narratives\, and contested memories in establishing the rule of law and reconstructing social and political life—or failing to do so. She is particularly concerned with the role that knowledge of past violence\, whether acknowledged or denied\, plays in the present.\n---\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact CSEAS at cseas@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\nRegister at http://myumi.ch/ez8ZP

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Back from the Archives: Identity\, Culture\, and the Politics of Writing History
DESCRIPTION:The recent explosion\, or perhaps just greater visibility\, of ethno-racial\, ethno-religious\, and other nationalist projects that seek to tightly intertwine identity and culture underscore the necessity of re-examining and freshly analyzing the connections between culture and identity. This nexus\, though extraordinarily durable\, is also mutable over time\, putting the practice of history in dialogue with new or transformed communities of interest who have claims on shifting visions of culture. Our three panelists\, all freshly back from a year immersed in their own research\, are well positioned to explore how the conventions of history and its writing both facilitate and impede these endeavors as they discuss how they must both lean on and push against history.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Farina Mir (Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Ian Moyer (Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Carina Ray (A.M. and H.P. Bentley Chair in African History and Associate Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n• Valerie A. Kivelson (moderator\; Thomas N. Tentler Collegiate Professor\; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Loneliness\, absence\, and mental health in psychopathology and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Most of us experience loneliness at some point in our lives. It’s even come to be regarded as an urgent public health concern. However\, until recently\, philosophers have had little to say about it — including those working in phenomenological psychopathology\, which investigates experiential disturbances of an individual’s relation to themselves\, others\, and the wider world. In this talk\, I consider the importance of loneliness for psychopathology and beyond. Building on work with Lucy Osler and Tom Roberts\, I explore the experiential character of loneliness\, with a specific emphasis on how “social goods” are experienced as absent in ways that involve a diminished sense of agency and recognition. I consider three case studies — depression\, anorexia\, and autism — and argue for the need to attend to psychopathology-specific expressions of loneliness\, agency\, and (non-)recognition. I also briefly consider the broader significance of this topic\, including loneliness and mental health in the workplace.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Students Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such asthe weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship.\n\nFor example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you like\,“Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They mightalso make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on thecurrent situation.\n\nIf you are interested in learning more about \"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\, nowit’s your chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk as an international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with Peers!

SUMMARY:Presentation:Presentation and Q&A: \"What Does an Agent Do and When Are You Ready For One?\"
DESCRIPTION:This event is virtual-only (via Zoom) and is open to Helen Zell Writers' Program MFA students and Zell Fellows\, as well as U-M graduate and undergraduate students. It is not open to the general public. Please email Julie Cadman-Kim (kimjulie@umich.edu) for login instructions.\n\n\"What Does an Agent Do and When Are You Ready For One\" will cover the basics: What does it look like to work with an agent\, how do you find one\, and how do you know it’s time to start looking for one?\n\nBorn and raised in New York City\, Julie Barer began her career as a bookseller at Shakespeare & Company\, where she discovered the joy of putting books into people’s hands. After working for several years at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates and a decade of running her own agency\, Barer Literary\, she founded The Book Group with her colleagues Faye Bender\, Brettne Bloom and Elisabeth Weed in 2015. Julie represents a variety of writers across a literary spectrum\, with a special emphasis on fiction.\n\nJulie’s clients have been finalists and winners of numerous grants and prizes\, including the National Book Award\, the National Book Critics' Circle Award\, the Man Booker Prize\, the PEN/Hemingway Award\, the *Los Angeles Times* First Book Award and the Lambda Literary Award\, among others. Works by several of her clients have graced the cover of *The New York Times* Book Review and have appeared on national and international bestseller lists. Recent titles include HELLO BEAUTIFUL by Ann Napolitano\, THE GREAT RECLAMATION by Rachel Heng\, OUR MISSING HEARTS by Celeste Ng\, NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO PANIC by Kevin Wilson\, INTERIOR CHINATOWN by Charles Yu and LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND by Rumaan Alam.\n\nJulie is particularly interested in representing a diversity of voices from around the world and from a wide range of backgrounds. Julie feels strongly about bringing under-represented stories to light\, across race\, class and sexuality\, and relishes the opportunity to be challenged and educated by fiction\, to learn more about herself and the world around her: one of the greatest things literature can offer us.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Theory of Stable Market Segmentations
DESCRIPTION:We study market segmentation as the outcome of a cooperative game between consumers who interact with a monopolistic seller in groups. We introduce two new solution concepts\, the weakened core and stability\, that coincide with the core whenever it is nonempty. We show that these concepts are equivalent and characterized by efficiency and saturation. A segmentation is saturated if shifting consumers from a segment with a higher price to a segment with a lower price leads the seller to optimally increase the lower price. We show that stable segmentations that maximizes average consumer surplus (across all segmentations) always exist.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AIM Seminar: Hydraulic structures and flood risk - applying fundamental equations for fluid and solid mechanics to reduce damage during storms and aid the energy transition
DESCRIPTION:Fluid and structural mechanics are the basis of understanding weather-related hazards\, as well as designing infrastructure to protect people and property from these hazards. After presenting the equatlions governing stability of floodwalls and breakwaters subject to hydraulic forces\, I introduce a case study of the 2011 Japan tsunami's impact on a bridge deck that failed. Next\, I show the equations used to simulate tsunamis and storm surge\, and apply these to a study of flooding in Florida due to Hurricane Irma in 2017. Finally\, I introduce the hydropower equation and apply it to an investigation of Michigan's potential for expanding pumped hydro energy storage to aid the renewable energy transition.\n\n[Contact: S. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar -- Curves\, degenerations\, and Hirota Varieties
DESCRIPTION:The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation is a differential equation whose study yields interesting connections between integrable systems\, algebraic geometry\, and algebraic combinatorics. In this talk I will discuss solutions to the KP equation whose underlying algebraic curves undergo tropical degenerations. In these cases\, Riemann's theta function becomes a finite exponential sum that is supported on a Delaunay polytope. I will introduce the Hirota variety which parametrizes all KP solutions arising from such a sum and has a nice combinatorial description based on the Delaunay polytope. I will then discuss a special case\, studying the Hirota variety of a rational nodal curve. Of particular interest is an irreducible subvariety that is the image of a parameterization map. Proving that this is a component of the Hirota variety entails solving a weak Schottky problem for rational nodal curves. This talk is based on joint work with Daniele Agostini\, Claudia Fevola\, and Bernd Sturmfels.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What are stacks?
DESCRIPTION:Stacks arose in the 1950s-1960s out of a desire to construct solutions to seemingly unsolvable moduli problems. In this talk\, I will try to give a bit of an idea as to what made these moduli problems unsolvable\, before giving a loose definition for what stacks are and some examples. Some basic knowledge of schemes and functors will be helpful.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Kathleen Johnson\, University of California\, Irvine
DESCRIPTION:The timing and mechanisms of past hydroclimate change in many regions of the tropics are poorly constrained\, limiting our ability to evaluate climate model performance. Proxy records of past hydroclimate can provide critical information about the dynamical drivers of regional precipitation variability\, and contribute to improved climate projections\, yet the existing data is sparse in space and time. Filling these gaps can contribute to evaluation and improvement of climate models\, by helping to: 1) Constrain the magnitude and timing of precipitation change in response to external forcings and internal ocean-atmosphere variability \, 2) Evaluate the spatial pattern of regional precipitation changes in models\, and 3) Provide robust data for proxy-model comparison studies\, which may help reveal model biases. Speleothems are ideally suited archives of past hydroclimate due to their precise U-Th based age models and the multiple hydrologically sensitive proxies they contain. In this talk\, I will present multi-proxy hydroclimate records from our field sites in Mexico\, Laos\, and Vietnam\, and discuss how we combine cave monitoring\, proxy system modeling\, instrumental climate data\, and isotope-enabled climate model output to investigate the dynamics of hydroclimate variability on interannual to orbital timescales.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Steve Abney is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Affiliate Faculty in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research interests are in natural language processing and machine learning.\n\nTITLE\nInductive General Grammar\n\nABSTRACT\nGeneral-linguistic datasets that have become available in recent years promise to enable new progress toward a theory of general grammar. A barrier to success is the incompatibility between the inductive\, externalist approach that is natural for exploiting the datasets and the deductive\, mentalist philosophy that is currently dominant within linguistics. I argue that the externalist philosophy is viable and that there are reasons to consider it preferable. I argue that the mainstream approach is in some cases unnecessarily concerned with psychological reality\, and in other cases too quick to reject required subtheories on the grounds that they belong to “language processing” rather than linguistics\, with the result that current grammars give systematically inaccurate answers to questions of the linguistic status of sentences. I suggest that the inductive development of general grammar is already being carried out (though not in those terms) in the field of natural language processing\, and that linguistic participation in the effort would be of benefit to both fields.\n\nJoin us in person or online via Zoom!\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/98835149792

SUMMARY:Performance:Lucy Kaplansky
DESCRIPTION:“Utterly beautiful and affecting\, Lucy sings songs from her life that have resonance in ours.”—Scott Simon\, NPR\nToo long?\nA songwriter with an extraordinary feel for human emotions\n \nThe daughter of the famed Polish-Canadian mathematician Irving Kaplansky (who once wrote a song based on the first 14 digits of pi that his daughter has been known to perform)\, Lucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago bars. Then\, barely out of high school\, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega\, John Gorka\, Bill Morrissey\, Cliff Eberhardt\, and others—where she fit right in—and kept on singing after earning a degree and working in the field of clinical psychology. She's a singer-songwriter with an extraordinary feel for the range of human emotion. Lucy puts her own spin on contemporary songwriter folk with warm\, powerful vocals and guitar playing that draws guitar gods (or geeks) to talk shop with her. Lucy Kaplansky\, says the Boston Globe\, \"is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern city folk.\" Her CD “Ten Year Night” is the all-time best-selling album in the catalog of the folk label Red House Records. Lucy comes to Michigan with a wonderful new album\, \"Last Days of Summer.\"\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4096/4097 for more detail.
