SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CMENAS Fall 2023 Colloquium Series. Football Culture\, Politics\, and Economics in the Middle East and North Africa
DESCRIPTION:Football has been played in the MENA region since the 19th century and has been successively instrumentalized by colonialists\, anti-colonialists\, nationalists\, internationalists\, capitalists\, socialists and authoritarians. Because the outside world is unfamiliar with the historical role of football in the region\, it comes as a surprise that Qatar might feel competent to host a World Cup\, or that Saudi Arabia might harbor the ambition to create a globally competitive national league. In this talk I aim to place these developments in their broader context\, and to frame them using two theses. First\, football interest is inherently local – stemming from rivalries which can often be traced back more than a century. Second\, football economics is inherently global\, since playing talent migrates to where it is most highly valued. This framing carries some implications for the future development of football in the MENA region\, and the political tensions that this may create.\n \n Stefan Szymanski is an economist who studies sports. He is currently a Professor of Sport Management in the School of Kinesiology\, University of Michigan. He has published widely on sports topics in peer-reviewed economics journals and has written a dozen books. The most well-known is *Soccernomics* (co-authored with Simon Kuper)\, which has been translated into 18 languages\, though not Arabic or Hebrew.\n \nThis event is part of the CMENAS Fall Colloquium 2023: “The MENA world after a MENA World Cup” 555 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor.\n \nColloquium questions: cmenas@umich.edu\n \nThis series is funded in part by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS) U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) grant.\n \nTo register\, go to https://myumi.ch/8eA8n.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | nEXO: Probing New Physics With Ultra-Rare Decays
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of non-zero neutrino masses is the only measurement to date that violates standard model predictions\, and opens exciting new possibilities for explanations of fundamental questions like the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe and the origin of neutrino masses. Neutrinoless double beta decay\, an ultra-rare decay that will occur if and only if the neutrino and antineutrino are the same particle\, may be one of the best probes for these questions. But since the half-life is greater than 10^26 years (compared to the age of the universe at 10^10 years)\, experiments must look for incredibly rare interactions in the most radio-pure environment ever constructed. One of the leaders for the next generation in the field is nEXO\, a 5 ton experiment that will probe half-lives beyond 10^28 years. This talk will describe how nEXO will tackle this gargantuan task.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe (Kevin Carney)
DESCRIPTION:The Psychology of Borrowing: Evidence from Kenyan Dairy Farmers\n\nKevin Carney of the University of Michigan presents.\n\nAccess to credit can be an important part of the economic development process: credit allows financially constrained firms to make productive investments and increase their output. Microfinance has been proposed as a vehicle for economic growth\, yet recent evidence has shown that microfinance has not achieved the transformative effects that were initially hypothesized. Using a series of field experiments\, we explore whether principles from psychology and economics can be employed to improve lending models for smallholder dairy farmers in Kenya. The first experiment studies the borrower side of the problem\, focusing on how the endowment effect interacts with collateral requirements to influence demand for loans. The second experiment examines the lender side\, exploring how to optimize financial contracts to increase take-up while managing default risk.\n\nKevin Carney is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Economics\, studying development and behavioral economics. His research uses field experiments to answer policy questions in developing countries\, spanning a broad range of topics including household finance\, health economics\, and political economy. Kevin received a Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago.\n\nGroup Dynamics Fall 2023 Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe\nDo our cultural contexts influence our psychology and behavior — and if so\, how? In this RCGD series\, we delve into the socio-ecological\, histo-cultural\, and economic dynamics shaping the diversity of selfhood and its associated cognitive\, emotional\, and motivational processes. We go beyond the traditional East and West focus to include a wide range of cultural groups. This series will elucidate the implications of psychological diversity across the globe for policies in international relations\, politics\, economics\, business\, immigration\, and other relevant domains.\n\n\nOrganized by Shinobu Kitayama and Catherine Thomas\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars from this series are later posted to ISR's YouTube playlist.\n\n\nThe series runs Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\n\n\nAbout the Group Dynamics Seminar Series\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included discussions in “Law and Psychology\,” “Racism and Discrimination\,” “Social Media\,” and “Political Polarization.” The series is offered by the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD)\, at the Institute for Social Research.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Lecture | Haiti's Current Crisis: A Human Rights Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Moderator: Bénédicte Boisseron\, Professor and Chair of the Department of AfroAmerican and African Studies\, and affiliate faculty in Romance Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature.\n\nThis in-person event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.\n\nHuman rights violations are systematic in Haiti. The situation has worsened considerably since the multiplication of massacres in 2018 and the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021. The gangs control large areas of the country and practice a scorched-earth policy. Haitian journalist Roberson Alphonse will share his observations on the Haitian tragedy.\n \n Roberson Alphonse is head of national news at le Nouvelliste\, Haiti’s oldest and largest daily newspaper\, where he has covered topics including the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake\, the mismanagement of international aid\, gang violence\, and the introduction of cholera to Haiti by UN Nepalese peacekeepers. Alphonse is also the director of information at Radio Magik9\, where he hosts a popular daily program. He survived an assassination attempt in October of 2022 and was able to flee to Miami. He has continued hosting his radio show from the United States and was a candidate for the 2023 UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize for Press Freedom.\n \n Currently\, Roberson Alphonse is working on his Knight Wallace project \"Helping Haitian Journalists Navigate an Increasingly Volatile Press Environment\". Haiti is a resilient country with vast potential and deep-rooted struggles with poverty and violence. Gangs have strengthened their territorial hold on Haiti’s capital city\, the judiciary strains to function\, and murders– including multiple recent murders of journalists– frequently go unsolved. Alphonse’s research will seek out training methods and international partnerships that could bolster protections for journalists and help nurture a culture of media safety in Haiti and elsewhere.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umichhumanrights@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:H.H. Willard Lecture
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Ionic Liquids and GUMBOS: A Materials Approach to Analytical Chemistryach to Analytical Chemistry\n\nABSTRACT: In recent years\, much of my research has focused in the general area of analytical applications of ionic liquids where ionic liquids are defined as organic salts whose melting points are below 100 °C. The unique and tunable properties of ionic liquids have garnered much attention\, primarily because of their low melting points\, ease of syntheses\, and unique solvation properties. However\, ionic liquids whose melting points are above room temperature are solid phase materials and are often described as frozen ionic liquids. My research over the past few years has involved the application of ionic liquids in both the liquid and solid phase. In regard to solid phase ionic liquids\, my research has demonstrated the unique properties of solid phase organic salts with the unique tunability of ionic liquids. In describing these materials\, we have coined the acronym\, GUMBOS\, i.e. a group of uniform materials based on organic salts. We have also designated such materials as having the expanded melting point range of 25 °C to 250 °C. Since these materials have similar tunability to ionic liquids\, they can best be described as designer solid phase materials. In this talk\, I will describe my recent studies using ionic liquids and GUMBOS. The unique properties and applications of nanomaterials derived from GUMBOS\, i.e. nanoGUMBOS\, will also be highlighted. We note that in combining the distinct tunability of ionic liquids with the well-documented applications of nanoparticles\, we have engineered a new class of nanomaterials with wide general applicability. Several applications of traditional ionic liquids\, GUMBOS\, and nanoGUMBOS will be highlighted with applications in the areas of medicine\, sensors\, and material science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: Random polynomials near the unit circle
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that a random polynomial with iid coefficients has most of its roots close to the unit circle. Recently\, we found that both the minimum modulus of the polynomial on the unit circle itself\, as well as the closest root to the unit circle has a limiting exponential distribution. In the talk I will explain the joint mechanism behind these results. \n\nThe talk is based on joint works with Nicholas Cook\, Hoi Nguyen and Ofer Zeitouni.\n\nRecording of the talk can be found at\n\nhttps://youtu.be/bFT8TpUVmEw

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quivers\, Exits\, and Forks
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will describe quiver mutation with several examples\, and form the associated mutation graph (whose edges are mutations and vertices are quivers). We will learn about a particular kind of quiver called a fork\, and use them to identify infinite rooted trees in the mutation graph\, leading us to several results about the remaining 'forkless' part.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Generic character sheaves for parahoric subgroups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Lusztig's theory of character sheaves for connected reductive groups is one of the most important developments in representation theory in the last few decades. In this talk\, I will describe a construction which extends this \"depth zero\" picture to give positive-depth character sheaves associated to generic data. In the simplest nontrivial case\, this resolves a conjecture of Lusztig and produces perverse sheaves associated to sufficiently generic multiplicative local systems whose trace-of-Frobenius function coincides with parahoric DeligneLusztig induction. This is joint work with R. Bezrukavnikov.
