In 2022, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.\u2019s Hammer Museum Biennial, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\r\n\r\nTolliver refers to her process as \u201ccreative recycling\u201d: forging found and thrifted materials, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils, adornments, wires, and loose ends express the artist\u2019s feelings, perspectives, and everyday way of living.\r\n\r\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate, imaginative references to Tolliver\u2019s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size, larger-than-life, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art, where plants, statuary, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space, freedom of expression, and dreams of independence. Tolliver\u2019s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\r\n\r\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio, one expects the figures will spring to life, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding, furniture, and drawers inspired by Tolliver\u2019s own domestic space, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit, with the opportunity to sit among the artist\u2019s creations.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences, esthetics, and materials: prefab, handmade, urban, nostalgic, opulent, functional, garish, and celestial. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700), many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However, as the pages on display attest, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\r\n\r\nThe word \u201cIllumination,\u201d from the Latin illuminare, \u201cto enlighten or to illuminate,\u201d refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece, or first page of text, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter, and even miniatures, that is, scenes with an independent narrative. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Because the outside world is unfamiliar with the historical role of football in the region, it comes as a surprise that Qatar might feel competent to host a World Cup, or that Saudi Arabia might harbor the ambition to create a globally competitive national league. In this talk I aim to place these developments in their broader context, and to frame them using two theses. First, football interest is inherently local \u2013 stemming from rivalries which can often be traced back more than a century. Second, football economics is inherently global, since playing talent migrates to where it is most highly valued. This framing carries some implications for the future development of football in the MENA region, and the political tensions that this may create.\r\n \r\n Stefan Szymanski is an economist who studies sports. He is currently a Professor of Sport Management in the School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan. He has published widely on sports topics in peer-reviewed economics journals and has written a dozen books. Microfinance has been proposed as a vehicle for economic growth, yet recent evidence has shown that microfinance has not achieved the transformative effects that were initially hypothesized. Using a series of field experiments, we explore whether principles from psychology and economics can be employed to improve lending models for smallholder dairy farmers in Kenya. The first experiment studies the borrower side of the problem, focusing on how the endowment effect interacts with collateral requirements to influence demand for loans. The second experiment examines the lender side, exploring how to optimize financial contracts to increase take-up while managing default risk.\r\n\r\nKevin Carney is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Economics, studying development and behavioral economics. His research uses field experiments to answer policy questions in developing countries,\u00a0spanning a broad range of topics including household finance,\u00a0health economics, and political economy. Haitian journalist Roberson Alphonse will share his observations on the Haitian tragedy.\r\n \r\n Roberson Alphonse is head of national news at le Nouvelliste, Haiti\u2019s oldest and largest daily newspaper, where he has covered topics including the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, the mismanagement of international aid, gang violence, and the introduction of cholera to Haiti by UN Nepalese peacekeepers. Alphonse is also the director of information at Radio Magik9, where he hosts a popular daily program. He survived an assassination attempt in October of 2022 and was able to flee to Miami. He has continued hosting his radio show from the United States and was a candidate for the 2023 UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize for Press Freedom.\r\n \r\n Currently, Roberson Alphonse is working on his Knight Wallace project \"Helping Haitian Journalists Navigate an Increasingly Volatile Press Environment\". However, ionic liquids whose melting points are above room temperature are solid phase materials and are often described as frozen ionic liquids. My research over the past few years has involved the application of ionic liquids in both the liquid and solid phase. In regard to solid phase ionic liquids, my research has demonstrated the unique properties of solid phase organic salts with the unique tunability of ionic liquids. In describing these materials, we have coined the acronym, GUMBOS, i.e. a group of uniform materials based on organic salts. We have also designated such materials as having the expanded melting point range of 25 \u00b0C to 250 \u00b0C. Since these materials have similar tunability to ionic liquids, they can best be described as designer solid phase materials. In this talk, I will describe my recent studies using ionic liquids and GUMBOS. The unique properties and applications of nanomaterials derived from GUMBOS, i.e. nanoGUMBOS, will also be highlighted. Before his arrival at Michigan, he taught in a similar position at the University of Georgia. His students have distinguished themselves by winning international and national competitions and attaining positions with professional performing organizations. He is a Past President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association and was selected as the inaugural recipient of the ITEA Teaching Award.\n\nDavid began his performing career as a member of the United States Army Field Band and The United States Army Band, both located in Washington, DC. He has had the good fortune to perform with many orchestras and brass ensembles through the course of his career.\n\nDavid has performed as a featured soloist at many workshops and symposia, including the Leonard Falcone Festival, several International Tuba Euphonium Conferences, and the United States Army Band Tuba Euphonium Workshop. In addition, he has performed as a solo recitalist at many of the leading colleges and conservatories in the United States. He has released three solo CDs: *American Music for Tuba*, *Tuba Helper*, and his latest CD, *Journey*, which features the music of John Stevens.\n\nDavid has served as the President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association. His summer teaching activities include a position at the Interlochen Arts Camp. He lives in Dexter, Michigan with his lovely bride.\n\nLIZ AMES is a celebrated pianist who is passionate about performing and working with instrumentalists, vocalists and composers. She has concertized worldwide, including in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Peru and France. Ames has served as a staff pianist for the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference and the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. Her publications and projects include piano reductions of large-scale works, including Wynton Marsalis\u2019s Tuba Concerto, Henry Brant\u2019s Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, and concertos and oratorios by Steven Bryant, Joel Puckett, Donald Grantham, David Biedenbender, and John Mackey. Ames completed her doctorate in collaborative piano at Arizona State University and is currently living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, performing with musicians throughout the Midwest and serving on the collaborative piano staff at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. She has recorded for Neuma Records, XAS Records, and Naxos Records, among others.
