SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Presentation:A lower bound on the top degree rational cohomology of the symplectic group of a number ring
DESCRIPTION:Let R be a number ring. If one fixes i and lets n go to infinity\, then the rational cohomology H^i(SL_n(R)\; Q) stabilizes in a range.\nOutside this range\, little is known about the rational cohomology in general except that it vanishes for all i > \nu_n\, where \nu_n is an explicit constant described by Borel--Serre. For i=\nu_n\, Church--Farb--Putman recently showed that the dimension of H^{\nu_n}(SL_n(R)\; Q)$ is at least (|Cl(R)| -1)^{n-1}\, where Cl(R) denotes the class group of R. For the rational cohomology of the symplectic group Sp_{2n}(R)\, similar stability and vanishing patterns occur. In joint work with Benjamin Br\\"uck\, we obtain a similar lower bound for the the top degree rational cohomology of Sp_{2n}(R) and show it has dimension at least (|Cl(R)| -1)^n.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Seminar | Geometry of Conformal Manifolds and the Inversion Formula
DESCRIPTION:Families of conformal field theories are naturally endowed with a Riemannian geometry which is locally encoded by correlation functions of exactly marginal operators. We show that the curvature of such conformal manifolds can be computed using Euclidean and Lorentzian inversion formulae\, which combine the operator content of the conformal field theory into an analytic function. Analogously\, operators of fixed dimension define bundles over the conformal manifold whose curvatures can also be computed using inversion formulae. These results relate curvatures to integrated four-point correlation functions which are sensitive only to the behavior of the theory at separated points. We apply these inversion formulae to derive convergent sum rules expressing the curvature in terms of the spectrum of local operators and their three-point function coefficients. We further show that the curvature can smoothly diverge only if a conserved current appears in the spectrum\, or if the theory develops a continuum. We verify our results explicitly in 2d examples.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: Tensorial measures and omega-categorical theories
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Andrew Snowden (UofM) and Nate Harman (UGA) introduced a new way of constructing tensor categories out of (really) large groups. What’s important for this talk is that these large groups are automorphism groups of omega-categorical theories.\n\nI will give a friendly introduction to the topic and then focus on the known examples of omega-categorical theories and tensorial measures on them. Over the course of introducing the examples\, I will demonstrate a beginner-friendly approach to the measures which follows the language of finite structures of the given theory. Hopefully\, the audience can give me an idea of how to think about the measures from a model-theoretic point of view!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Did decreasing residential segregation reduce the racial wealth inequality?
DESCRIPTION:Following the Fair Housing Act (FHA) in 1968\, racial residential segregation declined rapidly in the United States. On the other hand\, during the 1970s\, the long-run convergence in Black—White wealth gap also halted. In this research I examine how changing segregation affected racial wealth inequality\, which I connect through the housing market. First\, I present evidence that the relocation of high-income Black families into higher income and previously more White neighborhoods accelerated after the FHA. I also show that this relocation likely had a negative effect on house price increase in neighborhoods with a high share of high-income Black families and the housing wealth differences increased among Black families. Then\, I build and estimate a partial-equilibrium heterogeneous-agent overlapping-generation model with spatial equilibrium and endogenous housing prices. With this model I simulate how the relocation of high income Black families affected the Black wealth distribution and the Black-White wealth gap. In the model the end of residential segregation increased wealth inequality among Black households\, but it also decreased overall racial wealth inequality. The policy’s positive effect on wealth concentrated among Black families who were previously constrained from moving into the model’s White neighborhood\, while renters in the White and owners in the Black neighborhoods experienced modest losses in wealth.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Challenging the Standard Model with a new measurement of the muon magnetic moment anomaly g-2
DESCRIPTION:The muon magnetic moment anomaly is a contribution to the magnetic moment that arises from interactions with the particles that briefly emerge from the quantum vacuum to affect the muon's interaction with a magnetic field. The muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has collected six years of data\, and on August 7\, 2023\, the collaboration announced the result from analyzing year two and three and the combined precision of 200 parts per-billion. In the Standard Model of particles and interactions\, the muon g-2 is a radiative correction that can be calculated\, in principle\, with high precision. Our challenge to the Standard Model is the comparison of experiment and the theory. In this address\, I will describe the experiment and the challenges overcome to achieve its precision with some emphasis on the University of Michigan contributions\, and I will put the challenge to the Standard Model in context including the challenges of the Standard Model Calculation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar: Quasilength\, Content\, and Q-sequences
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce the content of a ring with respect to a sequence of elements\, a real number invariant first defined by Mel Hochster and Craig Huneke. A Q-sequence is a sequence of elements for which the content of the ring is equal to 1\; after introducing definitions and looking at some basic examples and properties\, we will focus on the conjecture that every system of parameters is a Q-sequence. This talk is a preview of the talk that will be given in the Commutative Algebra seminar on 9/25.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Additive Growth
DESCRIPTION:Growth theory is based on the assumption of exponential total factor productivity (TFP) growth. Across countries and time periods I find that TFP growth is additive. There is no evidence that TFP increments increase with the level of TFP as predicted by the exponential model. Even starting from low priors\, Bayesian estimation selects the additive model over the exponential one. The additive growth model\, unlike the exponential one\, provides useful long-term forecasts for TFP. For the distant past the model suggests piecewise linear evolutions with infrequent changes: the size of TFP increments increases around 1650\, 1830 and 1930. For the distant future the model predicts ever increasing increments in standards of living but with falling real interest rates and growth rates that converge to zero.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic geometry seminar: The period-index problem
DESCRIPTION:The period-index problem asks for a bound on one measure of complexity of a Brauer class (its index) in terms of another (its period). I will discuss some recent progress on this problem which relies on a mixture of ideas from Hodge theory\, noncommutative/derived algebraic geometry\, and enumerative geometry. This is based on joint works with James Hotchkiss and with Johan de Jong.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Math Undergraduate Seminar: How Complicated is the Sierpinski Carpet?
DESCRIPTION:The distinct symmetries of the closed unit interval [0\,1] are relatively easy to understand. The problem becomes much more complex if one is to consider the closed unit square [0\,1]^2 instead. Indeed it is a theorem of Hjorth that it is not possible to definably classify the symmetries of the square by using reasonably simple invariants.\n\nIn this talk\, we will rigorously define terms such as \"distinct symmetries\" and \"reasonably simple invariants.\" We also briefly discuss Hjorth's theory of turbulence used to prove the above result. Finally\, we take a step towards studying the more general interplay between dimension and turbulence by arguing that even the distinct symmetries of the Sierpinski carpet\, which will also be defined\, cannot be classified in this manner.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Math/MCAIM Colloquium | The Theory and Application of Networks: From Mathematical Machine Learning to Simplicial Complexes
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Networks are ubiquitous in nature and appropriate for mathematical investigation of various systems. In this talk I will discuss some aspects at the intersection of mathematics\, machine learning\, and networks to introduce interdisciplinary methods with wide application. First\, I will discuss some recent advances in mathematical machine learning for prediction on graphs. Machine learning is often a black box. Here I will present some exact theoretical results on the dynamics of weights while training graph neural networks using graphons - a limiting function of a graph with infinitely many nodes. Next\, I will use these ideas to present a new method for early prediction of disease subtype\, characterized by dynamic co-evolution of multiple variables\, with remarkable success in prediction of Parkinson's subtype five years in advance. Then\, I will discuss some work on higher-order models of graphs: simplicial complexes - that can capture simultaneous many-body interactions. I will present some results on spectral theory of simplicial complexes\, as well as introduce a mathematical framework for studying the topology and dynamics of multilayer simplicial complexes using Hodge theory\, applied to brain connectome data. Finally\, I will discuss applications of such interdisciplinary methods to studying bias in society\, opinion dynamics\, hate speech propagation in social media\, and extreme mountaineering. \n\nTalk will be in-person and on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Introduction to Persistent Barcodes
DESCRIPTION:This expository talk will give an accessible introduction to the concept of persistence barcodes from topological data analysis in a way that only requires linear algebra as a prerequisite. We will start with an intuitive sketch of simplicial homology and then discuss persistent intervals in a concrete\, example-driven way. We will finish by developing an efficient computational method\, as well as some optimization tricks (as time permits)\, for persistent barcodes. The appropriate references or further readings will be provided during the talk. Note that I will be giving a similar talk\, but assuming more knowledge of topology\, in the Student DGT Seminar this week.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Wenjing Wang Promotion Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Protein-based tools for studying brain signaling and neurodegenerative diseases\n\nAbstract: One major challenge in neuroscience is capturing and manipulating neuronal signaling and modulation with high spatiotemporal resolution and across a large brain volume. To address this gap\, my research group takes a chemical biology approach to design novel classes of protein-based sensors and tools. For example\, we have designed new classes of fluorescence-integrators which generate permanent marks upon detection of specific neuromodulators. These fluorescence-integrators will enable whole-brain mapping of opioids\, epinephrine\, dopamine\, and other neuromodulators with high spatial resolution. We have also designed light- and chemical-activated protein switches for controlling the activity of peptide agonists for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs)\, which will enable the activation of GPCRs in selective neuronal circuits to study their causal-effect on various physiological processes and behaviors. These protein-based sensors and tools will significantly facilitate the study of brain signaling and neuromodulation. Another significant hurdle in neuroscience is the lack of reagents to target misfolded a-synuclein (a-syn) protein aggregates\, a hallmark of synucleinopathies. We have designed a-syn fibril-selective nanobodies which show efficacy in inhibiting pathology development in cultured neurons and mouse models. The a-syn fibril-selective nanobodies will provide valuable tools for studying synucleinopathies.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Michigan: Healthcare Moneyball - Associate Job in Healthcare Consulting with IQVIA!
DESCRIPTION:Why Moneyball?\n\nNo worries\, we aren’t looking for candidates with backgrounds in sports\, reading Michael Lewis novels\, or indulging in Brad Pitt movies. In the early 2000s\, the Oakland Athletics baseball team implemented enhanced statistical insights to understand the real value of players\, as opposed to “old-school” approaches that are outdated\, subjective\, and often flawed. Using enhanced insights\, the A’s remained a competitive baseball team despite having limited funds to pay high-value players and managers – their unique approach to better gain insight about players had ushered in an era of new thinking to the game and enhanced insights are now a necessity to “play ball” in every industry.\n\nIn our world of healthcare\, ongoing changes in patient insurance coverage\, continued impacts from COVID-19\, increasing industry consolidation\, and the growth in expensive transformative therapeutics continue to challenge the life sciences landscape. These changes at a macro-level have ripple effects across the country. For example\, the “greying” of the US is leading to approximately 15 M people enrolling in Medicare over the next ten years\, but this impact is likely to increase more so in specific states and geographies. Furthermore\, the growth in high deductibles continue to drive higher costs across the landscape of various treatment options.\n\nAs a result\, we support our clients by developing “Moneyball” like solutions to provide better insights for our clients to adapt to a demanding market. Our team uses the power of healthcare data to help manufacturers measure the impact of market access on brand performance and the cascading influence this has on how prescribers and patients gain access to innovative therapies. We support manufacturers by providing deep insights into the geographic variations of patient\, insurer\, and prescriber behaviorand thereby help manufacturers implement more effective strategies for sales execution\, insurer contracting\, net revenue optimization\, and all varieties of patient assistance programs.\n\nPlease join for a deeper dive into the type of work IQVIA’s Market Access Strategy Consulting team does daily. You will hear from two of our top Principals – Ross Perak and Sayantan Niyogi. Access represents one of the most critical barriers to patients accessing the therapies they need. Health insurers restrict patient access to therapies that carry less value for them\, posing an obvious puzzle for us to solve.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optimal Contract Design via Relaxation: Application to the Problem of Brokerage Fees.
DESCRIPTION:I will present a new approach to show the existence of optimal contracts based on the relaxation of the agent's optimal control problem. Introducing the notion of \"relaxed\" controls of the agent we prove the existence of optimal contracts in models where the state is given by a diffusion process with linearly controlled drift. Under concavity assumptions we show that the \"relaxed\" optimal contracts solve their associated strong optimal contract problem. The main advantage of our model is that it allows us to (i) write an optimal contract as a limit of epsilon-optimal contracts\, ii) show the existence of optimal contracts for non-standard Principal-Agent problems (state constraints or difference in flirtations between Principal and Agent). These advantages make this approach well suited for the problem of optimal brokerage fees\, in which a client of a broker has access to a larger filtration (representing the client's trading signal). I will show how the latter problem can be solved using the relaxed control approach. This is a joint work with Sergey Nadtochiy.

SUMMARY:Performance:John Craigie
DESCRIPTION:Humorous storytelling\, serious folk music\n\nIf John Prine and Mitch Hedberg had a baby\, the resulting product would resemble something very close to singer-songwriter John Craigie. Musically comparable to Prine\, with the humor and wit of Hedberg\, the humble\, gracious\, and hilarious John Craigie is one of the best storytellers of our time. It's no wonder that Chuck Norris sends him fan mail\, and Todd Snider brings him gifts on stage. The vagabond troubadour has charmed audiences in all 50 states and throughout much of Europe\, with a DIY spirit seldom seen these days. John's true home is on the road\, and just like that he's on to the next town\, playing and singing and telling stories to everyone who wants to listen. John comes to Michigan with a new album\, “Live Opening for Steinbeck.”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4221/4222 for more detail.
