SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fall 2023 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing\, 20 hours
DESCRIPTION:This program is for U-M Student Life staff. Cost for non-Student Life staff is $200 per person for the 20 hours. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's an especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence) and therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health. It's use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk and a little on discord (if there is time). Lots of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple behavior changes you'd like to work on!) While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, know how to improve and maybe even want to learn more! Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. All Fridays:\n\n* Sept 1\, 8:30-5\, University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor* Sept 8\, 8:30-12:30\, University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor\n* Sept 15\, 8:30-12:30\,University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor* Sept 22\, 8:30-12:30\,University Health Service (207 Fletcher St)\, Meeting Rooms 1 & 2\, fourth floor

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Price Controls in a Multi-Sided Market
DESCRIPTION:This paper evaluates caps on the commissions that food delivery platforms charge to restaurants. Commission caps may lead restaurants to join platforms and to post lower prices on platforms\, thereby benefitting consumers. But caps may also lead platforms to raise their consumer fees\, thereby reducing ordering on platforms and consequently platforms’ value to restaurants. The net welfare effects of caps are thus uncertain. To quantify these effects\, I estimate a model of pricing and platform adoption in a multi-sided market using data on consumer restaurant orders\, restaurants’ platform adoption\, and platform fees. Counterfactual simulations imply that commission caps harm consumers\, bolster restaurant profits\, and ultimately reduce total welfare.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alumni Merit Presentation: Damon Williams
DESCRIPTION:Hear from our 2023 Alumni Merit Award Winner as Williams presents his talk titled\, \"Our New Compelling State Interests\"\n\nDate: Sept. 22\nTime: 12-1:20 p.m.\nLocation: IOE 1610\nSign-up: https://forms.gle/2p3L8riNe97M3Qiu8\n\nDescription: In 2003\, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor called raced-based admissions\, which allowed academic institutions to build student body diversity\, a \"compelling state interest.\" In 2023\, our current Supreme Court effectively reversed that groundbreaking majority decision by eliminating race-based admissions. Within our academic communities\, we must ask the question\, what are our new compelling state interests? In this interactive discussion\, we will consider that question and others as we explore options to continue supporting the ideals and values of diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging within our academic communities.\n\nBio: Damon P. Williams serves as the inaugural associate dean for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer\, advancing the College’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and supporting a climate of equity and belonging across our community. Williams is a member of the academic faculty in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE)\, where he is a senior lecturer and director of ISyE’s Center for Academics\, Success\, and Equity\, which he founded in 2020. He also speaks nationally on higher education and diversity in academia.\n\nWilliams earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2002 and then a master’s and Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He returned to Georgia Tech as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning and a part-time lecturer in ISyE in 2010. He turned his attention to teaching and advising full-time in 2014.\n\nWilliams also earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur\, Georgia\, and serves as senior pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church in southwest Atlanta.\n\n*This presentation is a part of our IOE 101 seminar series.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Locally Ensconced and Globally Integrated:How Positions in Network Structure Relate to aLanguage-Based Model of Group Identification
DESCRIPTION:Shifting attachments to social groups are a constant in the modern era. What accounts for variation in the strength of group identification? Whereas prior work has emphasized group-level properties and individual differences\, this article instead highlights the role of positions within network structure. Distilling insights from prior work on networks and identity\, the authors propose that identification strength is positively related to network cohesion—having contacts who are mutually interconnected. Departing from prevailing accounts\, they further propose that identification strength can separately arise through network range—having contacts who inhabit a broad range of network communities. Using the tools of computational linguistics to develop a language-based measure of identification\, they find consistent support for the theory using pooled data of internal communications from three disparate organizations.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Using AI and Machine Learning to predict recovery in post-stroke aphasia: Moving towards precision medicine
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will present our ongoing work aimed at predicting language recovery after acquired brain injury\, particularly after a stroke. Our goal is to predict individualized/personalized recovery trajectories based on algorithms from brain markers\, big data and computational modeling. In this regard\, I will cover three topics (a) Using machine learning to predict recovery after stroke where we examine neuroimaging scans to extract features that best predict stroke recovery\, (b) Using AI to simulate individual patient recovery trajectories after treatment where we have developed algorithms to predict recovery as a function of rehabilitation. In this project we are also examining predictors of treatment outcomes in bilingual aphasia\, and (c) using big data mining to create a therapy calculator for aphasia recovery. In the last project we are building algorithms of therapy outcomes based on a large amount of rehabilitation data using a digital therapeutic Constant Therapy. This recent work has potential to provide personalized recommendations for rehabilitation trajectories for individual patients who have suffered from acquired brain injury.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AIM/MICDE Seminar: Quantum algorithms for eigenvalue problems
DESCRIPTION:The problem of finding the smallest eigenvalue of a Hermitian matrix\, known as the ground state energy in quantum physics\, has broad applications. Recent years have witnessed significant algorithmic progresses including near-optimal asymptotic complexity\, algorithms with a minimal number of required logical qubits\, and even optimized preconstants. In this talk\, I will first introduce basic quantum algorithm concepts for a non-expert audience and overview these advancements. I will then introduce a recent progress in leveraging ideas from open quantum systems to solve the eigenvalue problem\, which allows us to start from a state with zero overlap with the target state.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Lin Lin is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UC Berkeley\, and a Faculty Scientist in the Mathematics Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research centers on solving quantum many-body problems by employing both classical and contemporary methods. These techniques prove valuable across various domains\, including quantum chemistry\, quantum physics\, materials science\, and quantum information theory. He has received the Sloan Research Fellowship (2015)\, the National Science Foundation CAREER award (2017)\, the Department of Energy Early Career award (2017)\, the (inaugural) SIAM Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) early career award (2017)\, the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) (2019)\, the ACM Gordon Bell Prize (Team\, 2020)\, and the Simons Investigator in Mathematics award (2021).\n\n[Contact: E. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar -- Geometry of Independence
DESCRIPTION:Matroids combinatorially abstract the ubiquitous notion of \"independence\" in various contexts. Recently\, an algebro-geometric perspective known as \"combinatorial Hodge theory\" led by June Huh produced several breakthroughs in matroid theory. We first give an introduction to matroid theory in this light. Then\, we introduce a new geometric model for matroids that unifies\, recovers\, and extends various results from previous geometric models of matroids. We conclude with a glimpse of new questions that further probe the boundary between combinatorics and algebraic geometry. Joint works with Andrew Berget\, Alex Fink\, June Huh\, Matt Larson\, Hunter Spink\, and Dennis Tseng.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combination Theorems for Anosov Groups
DESCRIPTION:The classical Klein Combination Theorem offers sufficient conditions to construct new Kleinian groups. Building on this foundation\, Maskit introduced profound generalizations of this theorem\, expanding its applicability. A special feature of Maskit Combination Theorems is that they furnish sufficient conditions that ensure the resulting combined group retains desirable geometric properties\, such as convex cocompactness or geometric finiteness.\nMore recently\, Anosov groups have emerged as a natural higher-rank extension of the convex cocompact Kleinian groups\, exhibiting their robust geometric and dynamical characteristics. In this talk\, I will discuss my joint work with Michael Kapovich on Combination Theorems tailored specifically for Anosov groups.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: The Future is Now: the Intersection of Robotics\, Cybersecurity\, AI\, and Advanced Nuclear
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAs nuclear energy expands its capacity and operational scope to meet evolving energy needs and combat climate change\, it is essential to reduce operation and maintenance costs to maintain economic viability. While robots have been used in the past for reducing costs through applications such as surveys\, their potential in nuclear power plant operations has been under-explored thus far. In this seminar\, I will discuss our research integrating machine learning and robotics to develop advanced online monitoring and diagnosis systems which improve operational efficiency and reactor economics. This approach allows for an increase in sensing scope\, reduction in human labor\, and decreased human exposure to hazardous conditions. By using robots as a new\, versatile and mobile sensing platform\, this research improves the overall accuracy and effectiveness in identifying and resolving issues within the plant. Additionally\, I will highlight our research on nuclear cybersecurity\, which addresses pressing challenges in enabling a digital future for the nuclear industry. Join us for an informative discussion on how advanced technology and research is shaping the future of nuclear energy.\n \nBio:\nDr. Fan Zhang is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She directs the Intelligence for Advance Nuclear (iFAN) lab in developing research which uses machine learning and AI to optimize nuclear power plant operations and enhance cybersecurity. Dr. Zhang is a Georgia Tech College of Engineering Cybersecurity Fellow. She received her Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering and a M.S. degree in Statistics from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville in 2019. She is the recipient of the 2021 Ted Quinn Early Career Award from the American Nuclear Society for her contributions in the fields of instrumentation & control and cybersecurity. In 2022\, she was awarded the inaugural Distinguished Early Career Award from the U.S. DOE Office of Nuclear Energy for her project “Robot-assisted Online Monitoring\, Online Maintenance\, and Dynamic Risk Assessment for LWRs and Advanced Reactors”. She has also been selected to the Class of 2023 Volunteer 40 Under 40 for her professional achievements and broad research impact.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Silent Pasts and Speaking Presents: History and Language in Contemporary South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Please join Professor G.N. Devy for a presentation on two recent\, major intellectual initiatives that pose significant challenges to the ongoing politicization of language\, community\, and history in contemporary India.\n \nThe first project is the massive\, People’s Linguistic Survey of India (published by Orient Blackswan\, 2013-23)\, a 50+-volume survey of more than 780 languages currently spoken in India today\, many of which now struggle for recognition and preservation\, as perceived by the people who speak them.\n \nThe second\, The Indians: Histories of a Civilization (published by Aleph\, 2023)\, is a seven-part history of India spanning more than 12\,000 years\, with contributions from more than 100 of South Asia’s most prominent historians and ethnographers\, including two U-M faculty members (professors emeriti Thomas Trautmann and Madhav Deshpande).\n \nG.N. Devy organized and edited both of these ambitious and historically important projects. Both projects creatively draw a bright line under the intimate relation between democracy and diversity\, and work against contemporary political efforts to homogenize India’s cultures and sanitize India’s pasts. Professor Devy’s presentation will describe the genesis and approach of each project\, and reflect more broadly on the place of diversity in India as a nation\, as people\, and as a spectrum of cultures.\n\nGanesh N. Devy is a scholar\, educator\, activist\, and the Obaid Sidiqqi Chair Professor at the National Center for Biological Research\, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bangalore. He is a prolific writer\, having authored or edited 109 books in the fields of literary criticism\, anthropology\, education\, and philosophy. From 1980 to 1996\, Devy was a professor in the Department of English at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda.\n\nIn 1996\, Devy gave up his academic career to initiate a deeper engagement with Adivasi and Denotified and Nomadic Tribal (DNT) communities. Devy went on to found the Bhasha Research and Publication Center in Baroda\, the Adivasis Academy at Tejgadh village\, and the DNT Rights Action Group\, among several other initiatives. Professor Devy has also been the recipient of numerous national and international awards\, including the Padma Shri (India’s fourth highest civilian award\, given by the Indian government) in 2013. In 2003\, Devy received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his pathbreaking book of literary criticism\, After Amnesia (Orient Blackswan\, 1993). In 2015\, Devy returned this award in protest over the “growing intolerance towards the differences of opinion” then manifesting in the murder and imprisonment of several prominent intellectuals in India.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Pre-Concert Lecture: University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:This lecture begins at 7:15pm before the 8:00 pm USO performance\, with four masterpieces featuring fanfares\, a fantasia and festivities.\n\nKenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nNhi Luong\, winner of the SMTD 2023 Concerto Competition performs the Third Piano Concerto by Prokofiev\, one of the most popular concertos of the 20th century\, known for its ultra-virtuosic demands on the pianist\, passionate music\, and stunningly brilliant orchestral colors.\n\nThe concert opens with Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 which captures the atmosphere of his opera Fidelio (originally titled Leonore)\, and takes us on a journey from the darkness and despair of being a prisoner in a dungeon through liberation to a glorious musical expression of freedom.\n\nThe final two pieces are “new” takes on music of the past. *Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis*\, for solo string quartet and two string orchestras is a beautiful homage to the early music of Thomas Tallis\, looking and listening back through 20th century eyes and ears. In Respighi’s *Pines of Rome*\, the sounds of early church chanting color the music as the pine trees in four parts of Rome seem to stand witness to aspects of life in Rome. The piece goes from the sounds of children running in circles while acting like soldiers\, to the serene song of a nightingale at dawn (the recording being the first-ever electronic device added to an orchestra piece) to a vision of past glories as the sun rises on the Appian Way. The *Pines of Rome* ends in one of the most astonishing displays of sonic brilliance in all of symphonic music.

SUMMARY:Performance:Devon Gilfillian
DESCRIPTION:The “Love You Anyway” tour\n\nDevon Gilfillian has performed at venues as diverse as the Newport Folk Festival\, the Montreal Jazz Fest\, and the 2018 NFL draft. He covered Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, and you just might notice a bit of a vocal resemblance to the Prince of Soul. Devon has opened for Gladys Knight\, Mavis Staples\, The Brothers Osborne\, Grace Potter\, and Michael McDonald. In April he released his second album\, “Love You Anyway\,” on the Fantasy label\, and the single “All I Really Wanna Do” hit the top ten on Billboard’s Adult Alternative chart. Devon writes his own music\, has a voice to remember\, and is definitely a soul/R&B artist on the verge!\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4189/4191 for more detail.
