Most recently, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.\u2019s Hammer Museum Biennial, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\r\n\r\nTolliver refers to her process as \u201ccreative recycling\u201d: forging found and thrifted materials, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils, adornments, wires, and loose ends express the artist\u2019s feelings, perspectives, and everyday way of living.\r\n\r\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate, imaginative references to Tolliver\u2019s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size, larger-than-life, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art, where plants, statuary, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space, freedom of expression, and dreams of independence. Tolliver\u2019s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\r\n\r\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio, one expects the figures will spring to life, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding, furniture, and drawers inspired by Tolliver\u2019s own domestic space, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit, with the opportunity to sit among the artist\u2019s creations.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences, esthetics, and materials: prefab, handmade, urban, nostalgic, opulent, functional, garish, and celestial. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700), many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However, as the pages on display attest, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\r\n\r\nThe word \u201cIllumination,\u201d from the Latin illuminare, \u201cto enlighten or to illuminate,\u201d refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece, or first page of text, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter, and even miniatures, that is, scenes with an independent narrative. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative\u2019s themed semester on Arts & Resistance, \u201c!!!techn010ffspring!!!\u201d critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Observations of mature gas giants and brown dwarf companions as a function of host star mass, orbital separation, and mass ratio may reveal how the complex processes of planet formation determine their composition and help regulate the delivery of volatiles to potentially habitable planets. Some inspiring initiatives intended to help ethnic minorities to attain tenure and deanship exclude Asians from participating, perhaps because Asians are assumed to be already successful. Jackson G. Lu challenges this assumption by revealing a \u201cBamboo Ceiling\u201d in tenure, full professorship, and deanship in US business schools. He analyzes a 10-year panel of tenure-track professors and deans at top-50 US business schools. Although Asians appear well represented at first glance, a stark contrast emerges once one distinguishes between East Asians (e.g., ethnic Chinese) and South Asians (e.g., ethnic Indians): Among all ethnicities, East Asian faculty are proportionally the least likely to be tenured professors, full professors, and deans, whereas South Asian faculty are the most likely. Moreover, East Asians tend to be employed by lower-ranked schools. To understand these puzzling patterns, Lu constructs large-scale datasets to test potential contributing factors, including (a) faculty recruitment bar, (b) research productivity, (c) research impact, (d) teaching evaluations, (e) invited seminar talks, (f) social media activities, and (g) social media mentions. As one of the largest endeavors to examine ethnic disparities in academia, this research extends the diversity, equity, and inclusion literature and the \u201cleaky pipeline\u201d literature by uncovering East Asian faculty\u2019s neglected challenges in US business schools.\r\n\r\nJackson G. Lu is the Sloan School Career Development Associate Professor in Work and Organization Studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He received his PhD from Columbia Business School. Jackson studies culture and globalization through two distinctive research streams. His first research stream examines the \u201cBamboo Ceiling\u201d experienced by Asians despite their educational and economic achievements in the United States. consequential than our relationship with the human microbiome. These symbionts may live within insect cells, be inherited across generations, and support host survival. My research group and our collaborators have developed genetic toolkits for engineering diverse bacterial symbionts associated with flies, aphids, bees, and other insects. Because of their important and integrated functions, engineered symbionts can be used to study insect biology, protect beneficial insects, and prevent pests from vectoring disease. Recently, we have examined how culturable \u201cprotosymbiont\u201d strains of Serratia symbiotica colonize aphids and demonstrated that they are transmitted to offspring. We are now attempting to attenuate the pathogenicity of these strains to initiate new stable symbioses. In other work, we have shown that the honey bee gut symbiont Snodgrassella alvi can be engineered to express double-stranded RNAs that induce a targeted RNA interference response in their hosts. These engineered symbionts can be used to knock down expression of bee genes as a tool for functional genomics.
