SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Arboreal Tensor Categories
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Andrew Snowden (UofM) and Nate Harman (UGA) introduced a new way of constructing tensor categories. In the first part of the talk\, I will demonstrate how the general theory works in a particular case of an infinite symmetric group. The technique generalizes and explains the well-known example of Deligne's categories Rep(S_t). \n\nIn the second part of the talk\, we will explore arboreal tensor categories\, a completely new series of tensor categories. I will draw similarities and emphasize differences with Deligne's categories and other previously studied tensor categories.\n\nEveryone is welcome! SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nDNA methylation is essential for mammalian embryonic and post-natal development. Mutations in the de novo DNA methyltransferase DNMT3A\, which is expressed as two isoforms\, DNMT3A1 and DNMT3A2\, cause abnormal brain development in children and clonal hematopoiesis in older individuals. Additionally\, DNA methylation patterns are profoundly altered in all human cancers in the absence of mutations in the components of the methylation machinery. We have discovered that a large majority of human tumors overexpress the DNMT3A2 isoform and have determined the cryo-EM structure of this isoform together with its non-catalytically active accessory protein\, DNMT3B3 bound to a nucleosome. Unexpectedly\, the heterotetrameric complex binds to the acidic patch present on all nucleosomes raising questions as to how specificity of methylation is obtained. The mechanisms responsible for the generation of altered DNA methylation patterns in all human cancers are not understood. We have found profound alterations in the ratios of DNMT3A2 to DNMT3B3 which might be partially responsible for these changes. I will also discuss the development of new drugs and combinations to target abnormal methylation in cancer and present results of small clinical trials in patients to test these approaches. \n\nBIO:\nPeter Jones was born in Cape Town\, raised and attended college in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe)\, and received his Ph.D. from the University of London. He joined the University of Southern California in 1977\, attaining the rank of Professor in 1985 and Distinguished Professor in 1999. He served as Director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center between 1993 and 2011. Dr. Jones became Chief Scientific Officer of Van Andel Institute (VAI) in Grand Rapids\, Michigan in 2014. His laboratory discovered the effects of 5 azacytidine on cytosine methylation and first established the link between DNA methylation\, gene expression and differentiation. He helped pioneer the field of epigenetics\, particularly its role in cancer\, and helped develop novel cancer therapies. He has published more than 300 scientific papers and received several honors\, including two Outstanding Investigator Awards from the NCI. He and Stephen Baylin shared the Kirk Landon Award for Basic Cancer Research from the AACR in 2009 and the Medal of Honor from the American Cancer Society in 2011. Dr. Jones is a past President of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2009 and a Fellow of the Academy of the AACR in 2013. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA in 2016\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017 and received an honorary D.Sc. from Stellenbosch University in 2018.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Bootstrapping large-N confining gauge theories
DESCRIPTION:Obtaining the low-energy EFT of a given large-N confining gauge theory is in general a very difficult problem. Instead\, one can proceed by carving out the space of allowed EFTs using the constraints on scattering amplitudes that follow e.g. from unitarity and crossing symmetry. In this talk I will review how to do this in the context of pion physics\, with large-N QCD as our target. I will discuss what bounds this imposes on the chiral Lagrangian\, and what theories saturate the bounds. I will end by discussing how a mixed system of pions and photons allows us to input symmetries and anomalies into the bootstrap\, paving the way for bootstrapping large N QCD.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CPR and the DNAR Order in Older Adults: Historical Development\, Modern Outcomes\, and Ethical Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Developed in 1960\, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was quickly and widely adopted by the medical profession as a critical life-saving procedure. Given that all end-stage disease processes ultimately result in cardiopulmonary arrest at the end of one’s life\, however\, CPR was sometimes applied in non-beneficial circumstances or even against patients’ wishes. Originally devised to protect patients from unwanted CPR\, the DNAR order is now sometimes unilaterally applied against patients’ or surrogates’ wishes when CPR is felt to be medically non-beneficial. In this presentation\, we will explore the historical background surrounding CPR and the DNAR order\, examine recent data regarding CPR outcomes specific to older adults\, and discuss some of the related ethical challenges\, particularly pertaining to the unilateral DNAR order.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - Everything You Need to Know When Utilizing Probability Panels: Best Practices in Planning\, Fielding\, and Analysis
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS SEMINAR SERIES\nSeptember 27\, 2023\n12:00 - 1:00 pm\n\nIN PERSON AND VIA ZOOM\n- In person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research.\n- Via Zoom. The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nEVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN UTILIZING PROBABILITY PANELS: BEST PRACTICES IN PLANNING\, FIELDING\, AND ANALYSIS\n \nSpeakers: David Dutwin & Ipek Bilgen\n \nProbability-based panel survey research is more widespread than ever\, as the continuing decline in survey response rates makes cross-sectional sample surveys less and less accessible both in terms of fit for purpose data quality and cost. The attraction of probability panels for surveys is their ability to attain\, dependent upon their recruiting methods\, comparable response rates to cross-section polls\, but at a lower cost and more expeditious execution. Panels are a unique type of survey research platform: Unlike cross-sections\, panels recruit respondents specifically for future participation in surveys. In return\, panelists are financially compensated\, typically to join the panel in the first place\, and then secondarily for each survey in which they participate.\n \nThese differences to cross-sectional surveys have a range of potential implications. How does the method and effort of recruiting impact who joins\, and as a consequence what is best practice? What do panels do to retain panelists over time and which strategies are more successful than others? How much of a concern is panel conditioning\, that is\, the impact of persons repetitively taking surveys over time\, and what are the implications for how frequently panelists should take surveys? How do panels\, which exclusively request that panelists take surveys on the Internet\, deal with people who do not have or are not comfortable using the Internet? What is the impact of panelist attrition and what are best efforts to replenish retired panelists? How successful are panels are executing true longitudinal surveys? And\, given the additional layers of complexity\, how are panel surveys properly weighted and estimated?\n \nThis seminar is meant to serve two purposes. First\, it will serve as a guide for consumers of probability-based panels to understand what\, in short\, they are working with: What questions to ask and what features to understand about probability panels in evaluating their use for data collections\, and how to best use probability-based panel data. Second\, it will serve as an exploration of best practices for the practitioners of surveys: Raising issues of data quality\, cost\, and execution.\n \nLearning Objectives:\n \n1.	For consumers of panel data: Understanding the features of panels with which to be knowledgeable\; to know the important questions to ask panel vendors when assessing their fit for purpose of your research.\n2.	For researchers and practitioners: To understand the many dimensions and decision points in the building\, maintenance\, deployment\, and delivery of multi-client panels and panel data.\n \nBios:\n \nDavid Dutwin\, PhD\, is Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives\, Business Ventures and Initiatives and Chief Scientist of AmeriSpeak at NORC at the University of Chicago. David provides scientific and programmatic thought leadership in support of NORC’s ongoing innovations. In addition to identifying new business opportunities\, he lends expertise on research design conceptualization\, methodological innovation\, and product development. He leads the panel operations and the statistics and methods divisions of AmeriSpeak. David assists in NORC strategic vision and strategy\, project acquisition and management of advance research methods. Prior research has focused on election methodology\, surveying of low-incidence populations\, the use of big data in survey research\, and data quality in survey panels. He is a senior fellow of the Program for Opinion Research and Election Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. An avid member of the AAPOR community\, David served as president from 2018-2019. He previously served on AAPOR’s Executive Council as conference chair and has served full terms on several committees. For over twenty years\, he has taught courses in survey research and design\, political polling\, research methods\, rhetorical theory\, media effects\, and other courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania\, the University of Arizona\, and West Chester University.\n \nIpek Bilgen\, PhD\, is a Principal Research Methodologist in the Methodology and Quantitative Social Sciences Department at NORC at the University of Chicago. Ipek received both her Ph.D. and M.S. from the Survey Research and Methodology (SRAM) Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has published and co-authored articles in Journal of Official Statistics\, Public Opinion Quarterly\, Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology\, Survey Practice\, Social Currents\, Social Science Computer Review\, Field Methods\, Journal of Quantitative Methods\, SAGE Research Methods\, and Quality and Quantity on issues related to interviewing methodology\, web surveys\, online panels\, internet sampling and recruitment approaches\, nonresponse and measurement issues in surveys. In the past\, she has served on AAPOR’s and MAPOR’s Executive Councils. Ipek is currently teaching at the Irving B. DESCRIPTION:The Public Health IDEAS for Preventing Firearm Injuries team will be hosting a Design Jam on Wednesday\, September 27\, from 12:30-5:30pm in the Cornely Community Room (1680) in SPH I. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: An Introduction to Combinatorial Cardinal Characteristics of the Continuum
DESCRIPTION:In many contexts\, countable sets behave very differently from sets of the cardinality c of the continuum. If we do not assume the continuum hypothesis\, there may be cardinal numbers strictly between countable and c. So it makes sense to ask which of these cardinals behave like countable and which behave like c. To any such context\, we associate a *cardinal characteristic*\, namely the smallest cardinal that behaves like c. I plan to introduce a few of the most widely studied cardinal characteristics and describe connections between them. I'll include a few proofs\, intended as easy illustrations of more generally applicable methods.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Role of Civic & Community Engagement in our Cities–Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Guided by his recent book\, In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower\, Davarian L. Baldwin will lead us in conversation about how the higher education model of civic and community engagement has and (in many cases) hasn’t served its mission to address systemic inequities.\n\nDavarian’s deep work with community-based leaders and neighborhood organizations that are directly impacted by universities and their development within our cities provides a context for dialogue\, reflection\, and planning to address harm that has occurred and identify what is needed going forward. As Davarian will share\, in the current moment he sees a profound mismatch between the modest educational practices of community engagement and higher education’s massive political and economic impacts on urban life\, but a comprehensive and integrated civic and community engagement approach is a promising path forward.\n\nLater in the session\, Shalom Staub\, Director of UCLA’s Center for Community Engagement\, will share how he and a group of faculty and staff are using Davarian’s book to reflect on UCLA’s historical impact on the city of Los Angeles and inform their work as they contribute to UCLA’s community engagement strategy. \n\nThe session will prioritize learning and sharing with two facilitated small group breakouts. \n\nNote: This session is part of Campus Compact's programming for R1 Institutions. All U-M faculty staff & students are welcome to attend.given U-M's institutional membership in Campus Compact.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Inequity in Centralized College Admissions with Public and Private Universities: Evidence from Albania
DESCRIPTION:Centralized assignment systems are a popular policy tool to improve fairness and efficiency in allocating students to public college seats. In most implementations\, however\, private college admissions remain decentralized\, which may give high socio-economic status (SES) students a strategic advantage in the centralized public match because they derive higher value from expensive private alternatives. I empirically study application behavior and the allocation of students in markets where only public college seats are centrally assigned with new data from the college match in Albania. Using a policy change that incorporated all private colleges in the centralized platform\, which differentially shifted outside alternatives by SES\, I find that when private colleges operate outside the match\, high-SES students apply to more selective portfolios and enroll in more selective public programs\, but the selectivity gap in applications shrinks after the policy change. I build and estimate a model of applications and matriculation that uses the unique institutional features of the Albanian college admissions to disentangle the effects of heterogeneous beliefs\, preferences\, and outside options on choice\, and evaluate the distributional consequences of counterfactual admissions design. I find that removing outside options reverses the welfare gap in favor of lower-SES students\, but at the expense of overall market efficiency. This is driven by the fact that outside options dampen the distortionary effects of list size restrictions and incorrect beliefs on choice.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Labor Economics Seminar\, sponsored in part by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Abraham and Thelma Zwerdling Labor Economics Program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning seminar in algebraic combinatorics -- Scattering Amplitudes\, Tilings of Moduli Spaces and Positive Geometry
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the relationship between the moduli space M0n of n points on the projective line and scattering amplitudes for the simplest Quantum Field Theory\, the cubic biadjoint scalar. We discuss a natural set of \"u-variable\" coordinates on M0n which satisfy a miraculous set of binary-type identities\, and which are used to define a certain canonical form which has singularities on the boundary strata of a \"curvy\" associahedron in M0n. We ask the same questions for 6 points in the projective plane and produce a similarly beautiful curvy polytope and set of binary-type identities\, and a differential form which has singularities on the boundary strata\, connecting to the moduli space of del Pezzo surfaces. Time permitting\, we may discuss some appearances of oriented matroids in physics. References: 1912.11764\, 2306.13604 and 2212.11243.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The Black Hole Information Paradox: A Resolution on the Horizon?
DESCRIPTION:The black hole information paradox — whether information escapes an evaporating black hole or not— remains one of the most longstanding mysteries of theoretical physics. The apparent conflict between validity of semiclassical gravity at low energies and unitarity of quantum mechanics has long been expected to find its resolution in a complete quantum theory of gravity. Recent developments in the holographic dictionary\, and in particular its application to entanglement and complexity\, however\, have shown that a semiclassical analysis of gravitational physics can reproduce a hallmark feature of unitary evolution. I will describe this recent progress and discuss some promising indications of a full resolution of the information paradox.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Multiscale Modeling of Molecular Ion Beams and Beam-Surface Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nElectrospray ion sources are enabling technologies in the realms of satellite propulsion\, biochemical analysis\, and various surface processing industries. These applications motivate a deeper understanding of the physics of an expanding ion beam and the chemistry of particle collisions. Electrospray ion plumes challenge state of the art plasma modeling techniques due to the wide range of length and timescales over which key processes take place (i.e. nanometer-scale emission sites and centimeter scale operational volumes). Accompanying these spatial gradients are large density and velocity gradients in both the ion and neutral populations. Furthermore\, the electrospray plume is a non-neutral plasma with non-Maxwellian distributions. We present state of the art numerical models of the dynamics and chemistry of an expanding molecular ion plume which are necessary to explore design variables\, to understand operating conditions\, and to improve performance. Beyond applications in satellite propulsion\, we will discuss opportunities to utilize these ion sources in other relevant fields.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nElaine Petro is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University/ and director of ASTRAlab\, a research lab focused on sustainable space propulsion and exploration architectures. Elaine completed her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland\, in the Space Power and Propulsion Laboratory\, studying water plasma chemistry. She spent several years in the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics as a visiting student and post-doctoral researcher\, studying electrospray thruster technology for small satellite platforms. For her work on electrospray model development\, Petro received the 2023 AFOSR Young Investigator Program award. was named an ARCS Scholar\, National Science Foundation and Amelia Earhart fellow\, and was recognized as one of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s Twenty20s emerging leaders in aerospace in 2016. Prior to graduate studies at UMD\, Petro worked on the MAVEN Mars Orbiter\, and James Webb Space Telescope\, and Hubble Space Telescope missions at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Elaine is passionate about diversity and inclusion in STEM and is a founding member of the national Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics organization.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. DESCRIPTION:Roughly speaking\, two projective varieties of the same dimension are geometrically linked if they have no components in common and their union is a complete intersection. On the algebraic side\, ideals I and J are linked if we can find a regular sequence x_1\, ...\, x_n with J = (x_1\, ...\, x_n) : I and I = (x_1\, ...\, x_n) : J. We will take a look at what properties are (and are not) preserved by linkage\, as well as looking at a commonly-studied equivalence class of linked ideals.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2023 Heberle Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Please join the English Department for the 2023 Annual Lora Hutchins Heberle Lecture with distinguished lecturer Prof. Caleb Smith\, Department of English\, Yale University.\n\n*“I’m not saying\, I’m just saying”: Notes on Disavowal*\n\nWhat kind of gesture is a disavowal? In ancient religious and legal rituals\, it is a public way for speakers to renounce bad allegiances. In psychoanalytic theory\, it is the secret ruse by which we hide unwelcome knowledge from ourselves. And now\, in the critical humanities\, the political and private types of disavowal interfuse\; when we critics accuse someone of disavowal\, we identify both a transgression against others and a failure of self-reckoning. This talk explores the ideas about power\, knowledge\, and the subject that are entailed in such critical indictments\, where disavowal means something like the opposite of confession.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic geometry seminar: A mathematical proposal for the S-duality conjecture
DESCRIPTION:For a real four manifold X\, the S-duality conjecture of Vaffa-Witten in 1994 predicts that the S-transformation sends the gauge group SU(r) invariants counting instantons on X to the Langlands dual group SU(r)/Z_r invariants on X. Both of the invariants satisfy modularity properties. This is the mathematical meaning of the electro-magnetic duality in physics. In this talk I will present a mathematical method to attack the S-duality conjecture. The content of the proof may be related to the period-index conjecture for Brauer classes on smooth projective varieties. The talk is based on joint work with M. Kool\, and with D. van Bree\, A. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Benefits Cliffs in the Aggregate: Consequences for Welfare and Business Cycles
DESCRIPTION:Benefits cliffs - sudden decreases in public benefits that may occur with a small increase in earnings - may inhibit upward mobility. I study the effect of a multitude of cliffs across the universe of benefit programs in nine southern US states on intensive-margin labor supply and the implications for aggregate fluctuations. Using the American Community Survey and proprietary data from the Georgia Center for Opportunity covering nine southern US states\, I leverage geographic and household-structure variation to find that\, in aggregate\, individuals in households approaching benefits cliffs reduce their working hours by about 40 hours annually. I then build a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model that matches this result\, where a key assumption of inframarginal households allows me to accurately capture the benefits cliffs of the US tax and transfer system. I find the aggregate implications of benefits cliffs on output are small\, but welfare gains from their elimination are large and concentrated. In a counterfactual model that smooths over benefit cliffs\, output increases about 1.6% more on impact in response to an aggregate productivity shock compared to the baseline model with benefits cliffs\, but the welfare gain to formally-constrained households doubles.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fitted value iteration methods for bicausal optimal transport
DESCRIPTION:We develop a fitted value iteration (FVI) method to compute bicausal optimal transport (OT) where couplings have an adapted structure. Based on the dynamic programming formulation\, FVI adopts a function class to approximate the value functions in bicausal OT. Under the concentrability condition and approximate completeness assumption\, we prove the sample complexity using (local) Rademacher complexity. Furthermore\, we demonstrate that multilayer neural networks with appropriate structures satisfy the crucial assumptions required in sample complexity proofs. Numerical experiments reveal that FVI outperforms linear programming and adapted Sinkhorn methods in scalability as the time horizon increases\, while still maintaining acceptable accuracy. This is a joint work with Prof. Erhan Bayraktar. The preprint is available at https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.12658.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Math Undergraduate Seminar: Constructing equivalence relations between the Spider Category and the Kauffman-Vogel Category
DESCRIPTION:The diagrammatic relations appearing in categories naturally allow us to obtain knot invariants by interpreting knot diagrams within the framework of ribbon categories arising from representation theory. Furthermore\, these categories yield invariants of 3-manifolds which are important topological tools. \n\nIn this talk\, we first introduce the category coming from the representation theory of the quantum group associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ with diagrammatic presentations\, also known as $SL_4$-spider categories. In particular\, we then relate the 3-valent $SL_4$-spider category defined by Cautis-Kamnitzer-Morrison\, to a 4-valent spider category defined using the Kauffman-Vogel relations. By building up the map between these two categories\, we show the equivalence relation between these two categories.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG GeomTopDyn: EXACT APPROXIMATION IN HIGHER DIMENSIONS
DESCRIPTION:In Diophantine approximation\, it is a classical problem to determine the size of the sets related to ψ approximable set for a given non-increasing function ψ. Jarn`ık showed that the Exact ψ approximable set\, i.e.\, the set of vectors that are ψ approximable but not any better even up to a constant\, is non-empty. Bugeaud determined the Hausdorff dimension of the exact set in reals using continued fractions. We extend this result to higher dimensions by translating this problem to studying dynamics on the space of unimodular lattices using Dani’s correspondence. This is joint work with Nicolas de Saxc ́e.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Science Success Series- How to Tell Good Science from Bad Science
DESCRIPTION:You learn to read scientific papers in class\, but how do you know if what a paper is saying is actually true? Learn to identify misleading results (deliberate or accidental) in research with an exercise from the famous University of Washington course Calling Bullshit.\n\nWe'll look at examples of science from journalists\, researchers\, and government officials\, each of which have serious errors but still got published. Just what is wrong with the papers? How did the editors neglect to find the issue with their conclusions? Why did the scientist who wrote up the results not see their own error?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Lecture. Post-Soviet Satire in Russia and Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:In the 1990s\, Russia saw a slight rise in the field of social satire. However\, very soon all this degenerated into innocent humor\, and severe censorship was introduced on television. The most gifted satirists emigrated after a period of public harassment\, and the least gifted refocused on ridiculing the opposition. Currently\, there is simply no social satire in Russia because everyone who knew how to do it left either the profession or the country. Meanwhile\, the fast and stormy development of satire in Ukrainian society the past 20 years provoked a rise in national self-consciousness\, which led to two revolutions in 2004 and 2014. The victory in the 2019 Ukrainian presidential elections of Volodymyr Zelensky—a satirist\, comic actor\, and producer of the country’s main satirical show—is in itself an illustration of the enormous role that irony and social criticism played in Ukrainian public life. Nationalism\, corruption\, theft\, incompetence\, vestiges of Soviet slavery\, and dependence on the West—all of these vices became the target of harsh\, sometimes brutal satire. \n\nIn this lecture\, Dmitry Bykov will explore these ideas while highlighting examples from Russia in the 1990s\, like Shenderovich’s television show *Puppets (Kukli)* and some successful jokes and skits on the show *Club of the Cheerful and Resourceful (KVN)*. From the Ukrainian satire scene\, Bykov will talk about the writings of Marina and Sergey Dyachenko\, Maria Galina\, Lyubko Deresh\, Yuri and Sofya Andrukhovych\, and Oksana Zabuzhko\, as well as the songs of Vopli Vidoplyasova and Okean Elzy. Drawing on these examples\, Bykov will explore how Ukrainians are a self-ironic nation\, which has made them phenomenally resistant to any form of totalitarianism.\n\nDmitry Bykov is a writer\, poet\, literary critic\, and journalist. He has written and published approximately 90 books\, including 15 novels and 20 collections of poetry. Mr. Bykov is the recipient of numerous literary awards\, including the Big Book and Golden Pen of Russia. He has worked for 17 newspapers\, five magazines\, and on seven TV shows. Mr. Bykov has taught in nine universities in Russia and the U.S. including Princeton\, UCLA\, and Cornell. Most of his books are banned in Russia\, but several have been translated into seven languages.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the legacy of Dawg and Jerry.\n\nA Note From Sam-- The music that my father David Grisman and his close friend\, Jerry Garcia\, made in the early 90s (in the house that I grew up in) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded\, it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories. What I find most inspiring about this material is the way their camaraderie and their love and joy for the music\, simply oozes out of each recording. It is also impressive how deeply they get beneath their favorite songs—whether they are originals\, covers or traditional/old time tunes—and how expertly that material was curated.\n\nMy goal in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform for my friends and me to showcase our genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music. By playing some of their beloved repertoire and sharing the original music that our own collective has to offer\, we will also show the impact that this music has had on our own individual musical voices. Ultimately\, there is nothing that makes me happier than playing great songs with my best friends and my hope is to share that happiness with audiences all over!”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4249/4250 for more detail.
