SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can we engineer the energy transition? The science and engineering of bulk energy storage into concrete structures
DESCRIPTION:If you mix cement\, carbon black with water\, the magic of chemistry generates an electron conductive volumetric wire\, which permeates a load-bearing cement-based matrix. Herein we show\, how this magic of chemistry can be used to build a scalable supercapacitor technology for energy storage\, which everyone can build into their homes and roads. Possible applications include the energy autarkic home\, self-charging roads (by electromagnetic induction) and intermittent energy storage for wind energy and tidal waves. Availability of cement and carbon black makes this technology a good candidate for the urgently needed energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energies\, which puts us\, Civil Engineers\, in the driver seat of engineering the energy transition through our built infrastructure\, brick-by-brick\, road-by-road for all.\n\nFranz-Josef Ulm is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at MIT. A structural engineer by training he joined MIT in 1999\, where he is responsible for Materials and Structures. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering\, of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Surviving the State: Struggles for Land and Democracy in Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:*Surviving the State* examines environmental justice\, land governance\, and state-making from the vantage point of small farmers and grassroots activists struggling for land during Myanmar’s democratic turn. During Myanmar’s attempted political transition in the 2010s\, land was the basis not only of smallholder livelihoods and national development\, but also a critical domain for negotiating citizenship after half a century of authoritarian violence and racialized exclusion. Turning on its head a rich tradition of scholarship that posits land as a tool for state-making or an outlet for state-escape\, I argue that land is key to what I call surviving the state\, a set of socioecological practices forged through cultivation and dispossession as well as the gendered work of care and connection. This talk will draw on my book project\, based on 26 months of participant observation\, over 150 interviews\, and five participatory research and art projects\, to show how embodied histories of state violence shaped ecologies and communities\, ultimately undermining reforms that aimed to formalize property\, redistribute land and recognize ethnic territory. In the aftermath of Myanmar’s 2021 military coup\, these findings demand reimagining land not just as a resource for survival\, but also as a site of revolution and healing.\n \nHilary Faxon is an assistant professor of environmental social science at the University of Montana\, currently on leave as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow in the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Her research\, teaching and public scholarship investigates environment\, development and technology with a focus on social justice in the Global South. She also leads a research project on small farmers and big tech in Myanmar and co-lead two interdisciplinary research groups: one focused on digital transformations in property and development\, the other on the ethics and practices of algorithmic conservation.\n---\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\nRegister at http://myumi.ch/2mP6n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Atmospheres of Violence: Loss\, Silence\, and Affect in Archival Research
DESCRIPTION:Researching historical violence poses methodological\, ethical\, political\, and affective challenges\, particularly when this violence continues into the present\, disrupts linear notions of time\, and undermines triumphant progress narratives. When working in an archive defined by violence and terror\, scholars are surrounded by emotions\, both their own and their subjects’. In this workshop\, an interdisciplinary group of graduate students will consider how scholars can write about marginalized subjects and communities whose voices have been systematically silenced and distorted by traditional historical archives. Foregrounding the affective politics of archival erasure\, our panelists will offer different models for navigating archives characterized by profound violence. Our panel will include case studies from the temple of Sarapis in Ptolemaic Egypt during the second century BCE\, the St. Charles School for Boys in Progressive-era Illinois\, and contemporary social media archives documenting trauma and activism.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Dora Gao (PhD Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\n• Allie Goodman (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Kristen Leer (PhD Candidate\, Communication and Media\, University of Michigan)\n• Alexander McConnell\, moderator (Postdoctoral Fellow\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 101 Career Seminar Series: Ryan Chen\, Harvard Law School Student
DESCRIPTION:While this iconic yell from Kevin Garnett after winning the 2008 NBA Finals isn't necessarily the most insightful idea ever\, I think it accurately captures how industrial engineers should feel about how their professional lives can unfold. Certainly\, my own career has had a number of thrilling twists and turns - graduate school in engineering\, the NBA\, law school\, helping sue the NCAA to get college athletes paid... there are so many ways to proceed from a Michigan IOE education. I hope my experiences can help embolden someone considering a less traditional path\, and if not\, at least I think the stories are interesting!\n\nBio: Ryan graduated from the University of Michigan in 2014 with bachelor's degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering and Music Performance (Euphonium). He was deeply involved around campus\, including stints as president of both Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Pi Mu honor societies and research work with Professors Amy Cohn and Mark Daskin through the Center for Healthcare Engineering & Patient Safety (CHEPS).\n\nAfter spending a year at MIT (2014-15) as a PhD student in Aeronautics and Astronautics\, he transferred to Stanford University\, where he earned a Master’s degree in Management Science & Engineering (2015-17) before leaving Palo Alto for an opportunity to work in basketball analytics for his hometown team\, the Orlando Magic. Ryan spent four seasons with the Magic (2017-21)\, specializing in predictive modeling pertaining to the NBA Draft.\n\nSince the fall of 2021\, Ryan has been a JD student at Harvard Law School. He is now in his third and final year. While at Harvard\, Ryan is also a graduate manager for the Harvard men's basketball team and a research assistant at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. In the summers\, Ryan has worked in basketball analytics and strategy for the Houston Rockets (2022) and in sports litigation for Winston & Strawn LLP (2023).\n\nThrough all of these adventures\, Ryan has continued to work on music. His main project for the last several years has been Isomer Quartet\, a low brass quartet looking to push the boundaries of low brass music. The quartet has performed at several universities and music conferences and released its debut album\, New Folder\, in the fall of 2021.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:POSTPONED - CAS Film | Aurora's Sunrise - Ann Arbor Screening
DESCRIPTION:*These film screenings have been postponed to a still to-be-determined date later in October. Once we have received the new times from the State Theatre we will post them here. We apologize for the inconvenience.*\n\nThe Center for Armenian Studies is sponsoring the weeklong Michigan release of Aurora's Sunrise at State Theatre.\n\nShowtimes listed here will be updated as we receive the details. You may also check for updates at: https://myumi.ch/Jp2Gx\n\nDirector Inna Sahakyan will be in attendance for post-film Q&As on Friday\, September 29th at 3:00 & 7:00 PM.\n \nSynopsis: At only 14 years old\, Aurora lost everything during the horror of the Armenian genocide. Two years later\, through luck and extraordinary courage\, she escaped to New York\, where her story became a media sensation. Starring as herself in Auction of Souls\, an early Hollywood blockbuster\, Aurora became the face of one of the largest charity campaigns in American history. With a blend of vivid animation\, interviews with Aurora herself\, and 18 minutes of surviving footage from her lost silent epic\, Aurora's Sunrise revives a forgotten story of survival. Synopsis Aurora was a teenager when she lost her family to the first genocide of the twentieth century\, a nightmare that she herself barely survived. But when asked to not just remember but relive this experience all over again\, she said “yes”. In 1915\, as WWI raged on\, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time\, Aurora’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert\, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. But through multiple miraculous twists of fate\, Aurora was able to use her wits and courage to escape her captors\, and find her way to the shores of the United States. Young\, beautiful\, and with an extraordinary story to tell — the papers quickly found Aurora\, and within a year her story of survival was on every newsstand from coast to coast. It didn’t take long for Hollywood to take notice. With little regard for the toll it would take on the traumatised teenager\, they convinced Aurora that by bringing her story to the silver screen she would be able to help other survivors of the genocide. And so Aurora relived the unbearable\, and became the most improbable starlet of the silent era in Auction of Souls\, a runaway success\, breaking box office and fundraising campaign records. After the film’s release\, one out of every three American families reportedly contributed to the campaign to help the victims of the genocide. With the help of the film\, a campaign by the aid group Near East Relief raised $116 million and saved the lives of over 132\,000 orphaned survivors. The number of their descendants are in the millions. In the late 1920s\, expanding US-Turkish relations caused any mention of the Genocide to fade away. All copies of Auction of Souls were believed to be lost. Only in 1994\, several months after Aurora's death\, fragments of Auction of Souls were rediscovered. Utilizing a dynamic blend of different mediums\, including archival interviews with Aurora herself\, as well the restored surviving footage of Aurora’s silent-era blockbuster Aurora’s Sunrise brings Aurora’s incredible story to life for a new generation — the story of how one girl relived her life’s greatest pain to save her people.\n\n*\"Aurora's Sunrise\" was made possible by the academic contribution of the Zoryan Institute and is based on its Oral History Archive.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Community Protest\, Violence\, and Business Support for a Social Activist Cause: Evidence from the Black Lives Matter Movement
DESCRIPTION:We examine how companies respond to reported violence in protests in their local communities. Building on the community embeddedness literature\, we propose that business leaders can interpret protest violence as evidence of social disorder or a valid grievance\, and that this interpretation is influenced by the history of the community context in which the violence occurs and where their companies are headquartered. In particular\, we examine the history of grievance-validating events and the history of protest violence in local communities\, and posit that these factors shape whether companies offer their support for the cause of a protest in which violence is reported. Using a hand-collected dataset on corporate diversity actions following the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement\, we find that violence in protests was more likely to elicit supportive corporate diversity actions that align with the movement’s goals when the protests occurred in communities with a history of severe police shootings. We also find that violence in protests was less likely to elicit those actions when the protests occurred in communities with histories of persistent protest violence. We discuss several implications for research on social movements\, community embeddedness\, stakeholder strategy\, and corporate activism.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What’s Reading Got to Do with It?: Reading to Support Writing in Graduate School
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are moving directly from your undergraduate degree or returning after some time away\, the first term of graduate school will challenge you to expand skills critical to your success. Two of the most essential skills needed to thrive are reading and writing. This new\, four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nWhat’s Reading Got to Do with It?: Reading to Support Writing in Graduate School\n\nThis workshop will explore how you can read strategically to support your work as a writer in your academic field and discipline.\n\nWhat is the relationship between reading and writing for academic purposes? How can we read to support our work as writers in our specific academic fields and disciplines? In this 50-minute Rackham/Sweetland workshop\, you will discover answers to these questions through guided reflection on your current reading (and writing) practices\, as well as a hands-on introduction to specific reading strategies that support writing. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Random Choice and Differentiation
DESCRIPTION:The degree to which consumers treat different options as distinct or differentiated is a key determinant of market competition and pricing. To facilitate the measurement of differentiation\, we develop a flexible yet tractable model of random choice in a multi-attribute setting. We show the analyst can separately identify vertical and horizontal differentiation from binary comparison data alone. We characterize the binary choice rules that arise from our model using four easily understood axioms. In multinomial choice\, we show the intersection of our model with the classic random utility framework yields random coefficients with an elliptical distribution. We provide applications to consumer demand with differentiated products and to measuring the complexity faced by an agent in individual decision-making problems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AIM Seminar: Transforming Butterflies into Graphs: Statistics of Chaotic and Turbulent Systems
DESCRIPTION:We formulate a data-driven method for constructing finite volume discretizations of a dynamical system's underlying Continuity / Fokker-Planck equation. A method is employed that allows for flexibility in partitioning state space\, generalizes to function spaces\, applies to arbitrarily long sequences of time-series data\, is robust to noise\, and quantifies uncertainty with respect to finite sample effects. After applying the method\, one is left with Markov states (cell centers) and a random matrix approximation to the generator. When used in tandem\, they emulate the statistics of the underlying system. We apply the method to the Lorenz equations (a three-dimensional ordinary differential equation) and a modified Held-Suarez atmospheric simulation (a 1\,000\,000+ degree of freedom Flux-Differencing Discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the compressible Euler equations with gravity and rotation on a thin spherical shell). We show that a coarse discretization captures many essential statistical properties of the system\, such as steady state moments\, time autocorrelations\, and residency times for subsets of state space.\n\n[Contact: D. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar - From Scattering Amplitudes to Catalan combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will give a gentle overview of recent developments at the intersection of combinatorics\, real\, complex and tropical geometry and theoretical particle physics. The beating heart of that intersection is the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) integral formulation of Quantum Field Theory\, and its generalization by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM) to moduli spaces of points in projective spaces of any dimension. The values of these integrals are rational functions of certain kinematic invariants\, closely related to a richly structured object\, the tropical Grassmannian\; when these invariants are taken to be non-generic\, beautiful combinatorics emerges. We explore that combinatorics. We also describe novel connections to oriented matroids and positive geometry\, as introduced by Arkani-Hamed\, Bai and Lam.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Equivariant cohomology
DESCRIPTION:Equivariant cohomology attaches to a G-equivariant sheaf \mathcal{F} on a variety X with a G action a set of invariants H^*_G(X\,\mathcal{F}) which have been useful in representation theory and enumerative geometry. My talk will be in two parts: The first part will be technical-focusing on equivariant sheaves\, defining H^*_G(X\,\mathcal{F}) and sketching the ideas behind localization theorems. The second part will be computational using the GKM localization theorems to compute equivariant cohomologies of Schubert cells on Grassmanians.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Bootstrapping the CFT Landscape
DESCRIPTION:From critical phenomena to quantum gravity\, conformal field\ntheories (CFTs) describe the universal scale-invariant structures that lie at\nthe heart of theoretical physics. The conformal bootstrap is the\npowerful idea\, dating back to the 70’s\, that one can use fundamental\nconsistency conditions to constrain\, solve\, and map out the space of\nconformal field theories. In this talk I will describe recent progress in using\nthe conformal bootstrap to perform precise calculations and chart the \nlandscape of 3d CFTs involving interacting scalars\, fermions\, and gauge fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Isabel Hong\, Villanova University
DESCRIPTION:The accurate assessment of regional earthquake hazards requires well-constrained geophysical models of upper-plate deformation (coseismic) during megathrust earthquakes. Land-level change estimates using quantitative methods applied to microfossils (e.g.\, diatoms) found in stratigraphic records from tidal wetlands offer the most precise means to reconstruct coseismic subsidence. However\, existing quantitative estimates of coseismic subsidence along the Cascadia subduction zone are limited by a lack of observational data. We expand on our current understanding of earthquake-related\, land-level change by applying the first diatom Bayesian transfer function to fossil diatom assemblages from a stratigraphic sequence of six\, prehistoric earthquakes at Willapa Bay\, Washington\, USA. Reconstructed estimates range from 1.41 to 2.12 (± 0.69 to 0.83) m of cosesimic subsidence over the past 3500 years. Future work will continue to explore Cascadia’s past rupture behavior.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY: Hidden Sp(1)-symmetry and brane quantization on hyperKähler manifolds
DESCRIPTION:In a joint work with Conan Leung\, we found a natural but hidden Sp(1)-action on the space of L-valued forms on a hyperKähler manifold X intertwining a twistor family of Spinc-Dirac Laplacians of the space of L-valued (0\, *)-forms for a fixed prequantum line bundle L over X\, noting that L is holomorphic with respect to only one complex structure in the twistor family. In this talk\, I will explain how this result establishes a geometric quantization of X via Gukov-Witten brane quantization and leads to a proposal of a mathematical definition of the morphism space between the canonical coisotropic A-brane on X and its conjugate brane.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Myles I. Durkee\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. His research examines the implications of cultural invalidations and racial code-switching to understand how people navigate racial contexts and internalize messages about their cultural identity. This work examines how these experiences influence important psychosocial outcomes\, including mental health\, identity development\, and academic achievement.\n\nTITLE:\nRacial Code-Switching & the Psychological Consequences\n\nABSTRACT:\nRacial code-switching (i.e.\, adjusting one’s speech\, appearance\, and behavior to mirror specific racial groups) places a major burden on ethnic minority groups who must actively manage their identities in academic and professional settings to avoid facing additional bias. This presentation includes experimental and correlational studies examining the psychological implications of racial code-switching among Black adults. These studies will examine how racial code-switching influences professional evaluations\, interview performance\, and emotional reactions over time.\n\nJoin us in person or online via Zoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96307160413

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years\, COVID-19 has taken the lives of more than one million Americans. Nearly one-fifth of us knew someone among them. All of us have been impacted. In a culture that avoids talk of death and puts grief on a timeline\, what does our mourning look\nlike? How will we manage the voids the pandemic has created? Currently in production\, Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic is a documentary feature about COVID memorials\nand the people who build them. It centers on two projects: a community memorial in Detroit involving thousands of participants\, and one artist’s personal memorial in New York commemorating the loss of a friend. In documenting these stories\, “Afterthought”\nmemorializes individuals lost and communities changed by the pandemic and asks universal questions about shared trauma\, memory\, and healing. SUMMARY:Performance:Intimate Apparel
DESCRIPTION:Esther\, a gifted Black seamstress in 1905 New York City\, lives in a boarding house for women\, where she makes a good living sewing intimate apparel (and keeping intimate secrets) for her clients. As she saves for the kind of future with a husband and family that she can’t have with the Hasidic shopkeeper who has captured her heart\, she begins a deeply personal correspondence with a mysterious suitor laboring on the Panama Canal. \n\nSteeped in evocative historical detail\, *Intimate Apparel* delves into the inner lives of characters in search of connection. \n\nWritten by Lynn Nottage\nDirected by Judith Moreland\n\nThere will be a 30 minute post-show discussion after the performance on Friday 9/29. This will be an opportunity for our guest director\, creative team\, and cast to join in a conversation with the audience about the process.\n\nFUN FACTS: Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage wrote *Intimate Apparel* as a tribute to her great-grandmother\, a seamstress in early-20th-century New York. \n\nIn its initial run\, *Intimate Apparel* won the 2004 New York Drama Critics’ Circle and the Outer Critics Circle Awards.

SUMMARY:Performance:Rodney Crowell
DESCRIPTION:\"One of the great singer-songwriters in country\, in America\"—New York Observer\n \nRodney Crowell is one of country music’s most successful songwriters\, but the deadly seriousness in his music was always there for those with ears to hear. “Dad drove a stock car to an early death / All I remember was a drunk man’s breath\,” sang Waylon Jennings as he took Crowell’s “Ain’t Living Long Like This” to the top of the charts. Since the turn of the millennium\, Crowell has been on a roll\, releasing personal\, ambitious albums to wide critical acclaim. With his autobiographical masterpiece “The Houston Kid\,” he took an unflinching look at his own down-and-out upbringing. Rodney comes to Michigan with a new release\, “The Chicago Sessions\,” produced by and featuring Jeff Tweedy\; it’s been tearing up Americana radio.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4205/4206 for more detail.
