SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CMENAS Fall 2023 Colloquium Series Lecture: Beyond the World Cup: Indigeneity and Protest in Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Morocco earthquake unveiled aspects of the geographies\, the social maps and historical fabric of the High Atlas Mountains. Rushed to the affected area journalists pointed to difficult access\, isolation\, abode homes\, while comments on social media platforms questioned the role of state institutions in the relief efforts. Primarily home to Amazigh speaking Moroccans\, the Atlas Mountains have been subject to long held claims about indigeneity as cultural rights\, and linguistic and ethnic difference from “Arab”. Yet never the label “Arab world\,” as a short cut for speaking about a racially\, ethnically and culturally diverse Morocco has been as much disputed as during the world cup. While security services in Qatar were denying Moroccan supporters’ access to the stadium confusing their Amazigh flag with the rainbow (LGBT) flag\, Moroccan scholars and Amazigh activists denounced the way Arab media reporters celebrated Morocco’s outstanding performance as representative of “Arab\,” therefore effacing the identity of the players\, most of whom did not speak Moroccan Darija. I draw on these conversations to illustrate how claims of indigeneity have informed one of the most important movements against resource grabs: The movement on the Road-96\, in Imider.\n \n Zakia Salime is a Fulbright scholar and associate professor of women's and gender studies\, and sociology at Rutgers University. SUMMARY:Presentation:Innovation Insights: A Research Talk with Rodney Parks
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Academic Innovation is excited to host Rodney Parks for an Innovation Insights research talk. Parks\, university registrar\, director of Elon’s Summer College and assistant vice president at Elon University\, will discuss the importance of experiential learning and Elon’s effort to make it part of a student’s record.\n\nElon University’s efforts to expand the student record to include experiential learning constitute significant strides towards a more transparent and informative exchange of information between students and employers. What began as a rarely used supplemental document later became an official expansion to the academic transcript and is now presented as data-enabled visuals. Employers have expressed a need for more comprehensive yet accessible information about college graduates\, and preliminary research efforts indicate that the Visual EXP is a step in the right direction. With further iteration and innovation\, complemented by open conversations between employers\, institutions\, and students\, a co-curricular record may one day emerge that serves the needs of them all.\n\nA Zoom link will be provided upon registration.\n\n\n*Innovation Insights*\n\nThe Center for Academic Innovation brings together people who want to transform education\, share knowledge\, and increase learner success by hosting inspiring talks\, collaborative problem-solving workshops\, and discussions on the latest in educational research and practice. The Innovation Insights series features a diverse lineup of topics\, delivered by leaders in academia and private industry\, united by the common goals of delivering insights into how to further academic innovation and build the future of education.\n\n\n*About Rodney Parks*\n\nDr. Parks is the University Registrar\, Director of Elon’s Summer College and Assistant Vice President at Elon University where he has served since 2013. Dr. Parks also serves as an Assistant Professor of Adventure Based Learning and teaches two to three core capstone courses annually. Parks earned his Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from the University of Georgia. Dr. Parks also served the last few years as Senior Consultant for AACRAO.\n \nSince joining Elon\, Dr. Parks has been a prolific author\, publishing more than 80 articles and book chapters. Some of his work appears in current AACRAO book publications including Helping Veterans Succeed: A Resource for Higher Education Administrators\, Academic record Transcript Guide\, The Displaced Student\, Mentorship in Higher Education: Practical Advice and Leadership Theories and College Admissions: Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Student Body. Dr. Parks is well known in higher education for his work to create a comprehensive learner record for all students. In 2015\, he led Elon’s initiative to turn Elon’s co-curricular transcript into visual infographics\, better illustrating the comprehensive 4-year Elon student experience. As a result of his early work to expand student records\, Elon was part of the AACRAO/NASPA grant sponsored by the Lumina Foundation.\n \nAs the director or Elon’s Summer College\, Dr. Parks has used data driven marketing strategies to increase Elon’s summer revenue from 1.8 million to over five million in the last five years. This accomplishment is noteworthy given the decreases in summer revenues nationally. Course efficiencies during Elon Summer College routinely hit the 90th percentile.\n \nHaving served in the field of registration and records for nearly two decades\, Dr. Parks provides a unique perspective synthesizing knowledge of both student systems\, policies\, research\, teaching and innovation.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:POSTPONED - CAS Film | Aurora's Sunrise - Ann Arbor Screening
DESCRIPTION:*These film screenings have been postponed to a still to-be-determined date later in October. Once we have received the new times from the State Theatre we will post them here. We apologize for the inconvenience.*\n\nThe Center for Armenian Studies is sponsoring the weeklong Michigan release of Aurora's Sunrise at State Theatre.\n\nShowtimes listed here will be updated as we receive the details. You may also check for updates at: https://myumi.ch/Jp2Gx\n\nDirector Inna Sahakyan will be in attendance for post-film Q&As on Friday\, September 29th at 3:00 & 7:00 PM.\n \nSynopsis: At only 14 years old\, Aurora lost everything during the horror of the Armenian genocide. Two years later\, through luck and extraordinary courage\, she escaped to New York\, where her story became a media sensation. Starring as herself in Auction of Souls\, an early Hollywood blockbuster\, Aurora became the face of one of the largest charity campaigns in American history. With a blend of vivid animation\, interviews with Aurora herself\, and 18 minutes of surviving footage from her lost silent epic\, Aurora's Sunrise revives a forgotten story of survival. Synopsis Aurora was a teenager when she lost her family to the first genocide of the twentieth century\, a nightmare that she herself barely survived. But when asked to not just remember but relive this experience all over again\, she said “yes”. In 1915\, as WWI raged on\, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time\, Aurora’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert\, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. But through multiple miraculous twists of fate\, Aurora was able to use her wits and courage to escape her captors\, and find her way to the shores of the United States. Young\, beautiful\, and with an extraordinary story to tell — the papers quickly found Aurora\, and within a year her story of survival was on every newsstand from coast to coast. It didn’t take long for Hollywood to take notice. With little regard for the toll it would take on the traumatised teenager\, they convinced Aurora that by bringing her story to the silver screen she would be able to help other survivors of the genocide. And so Aurora relived the unbearable\, and became the most improbable starlet of the silent era in Auction of Souls\, a runaway success\, breaking box office and fundraising campaign records. After the film’s release\, one out of every three American families reportedly contributed to the campaign to help the victims of the genocide. With the help of the film\, a campaign by the aid group Near East Relief raised $116 million and saved the lives of over 132\,000 orphaned survivors. The number of their descendants are in the millions. In the late 1920s\, expanding US-Turkish relations caused any mention of the Genocide to fade away. All copies of Auction of Souls were believed to be lost. Only in 1994\, several months after Aurora's death\, fragments of Auction of Souls were rediscovered. Utilizing a dynamic blend of different mediums\, including archival interviews with Aurora herself\, as well the restored surviving footage of Aurora’s silent-era blockbuster Aurora’s Sunrise brings Aurora’s incredible story to life for a new generation — the story of how one girl relived her life’s greatest pain to save her people.\n\n*\"Aurora's Sunrise\" was made possible by the academic contribution of the Zoryan Institute and is based on its Oral History Archive.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: Taking the population control out of family planning measurement
DESCRIPTION:PSC Brown Bag Seminar: Leigh Senderowicz\nThe PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this year\, Mondays from 12 to 12:50 p.m.\n\nThis PSC seminar\, “Taking the population control out of family planning measurement\,” will be from Leigh Senderowicz from UW-Madison’s Department of Gender and Women’s Studies.\n\nThis talk will explore the ways that the ideology of fertility reduction permeates the design and evaluation of contemporary family planning projects\, nearly 30 years after the International Conference on Population and Development called for an end to population control. The talk will draw from the Contraceptive Autonomy Study\, a project designed to explore various dimensions of autonomy and coercion in family planning\, and to develop new understandings about why and how contraceptive coercion manifests. This presentation will focus specially on modes of measurement\, and the challenges to designing new demographic and health measures that better assess person-centered and justice-based approaches to contraceptive care.\n\nLeigh Senderowicz is a social demographer and critical global health researcher. Leigh currently serves as an assistant professor of gender and health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, with a joint appointment between the departments of Gender & Women's Studies and Obstetrics and Gynecology. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The SPICE and HeRALD Experiments for Sub-GeV Dark Matter Direct Detection
DESCRIPTION:The SPICE and HeRALD experiments aim to probe dark matter (DM) masses at the MeV masses via nuclear recoils. This sensitivity motivates R&D which is now pushing the recoil energy threshold of Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) into the meV regime before then applying these next-generation phonon sensors to a set of well-motivated target materials. The superfluid 4He target (HeRALD) will benefit from both a low-mass target nucleus and a unique quantum evaporation phonon readout method. The complementary SPICE effort employs polar crystal target materials\, motivated by their low-momentum phonon states and strong coupling to dark photon couplings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED. STS Speaker Series. From Biosociality to Biomythography: Toward a Postgenomic Contemporaneity of African Ancestry
DESCRIPTION:For the past two decades\, genetic ancestry testing has become one of the quintessential examples of biosociality\, providing scholars in the anthropology of science and medicine language to not grapple with how social inequalities like race have been at risk of reification through genetic information. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork on genetic reconnection programs in Cameroon\, this talk asks how we might consider the limits of biosociality for grappling with the contours of postgenomic contemporaneity. How could a reframing of the knowledge production processes involving African ancestry challenge the biosocial telos? And how might biomythography provide an important methodology for reexamining the multiscalar processes of racialization that are (and are not) taking shape amongst “contemporaneous” ancestors?\n\nBio: Victoria M. Massie is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Rice University\, and a faculty affiliate in the Center for African and African American Studies\, the Medical Humanities Program\, the Science & Technology Studies Program\, and the Center for Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Mobilizing Black feminist theory at the intersection of medical anthropology and the anthropology of science\, Massie's work seeks to address contemporary processes of racializing Blackness by considering how ideas of the biological and embodiment are being reconfigured in the 21st century. Additionally\, Massie is committed to experimenting with ethnographic form\, including her first book project\, Prospecting Return: A Biomythography of Genetic African Ancestry. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the United States and Cameroon from 2010 to 2018\, Prospecting Return examines how the emergence of genetic reconnection programs in tandem with Cameroon's 50th anniversary of independence mobilize the genetic Cameroonian diaspora to prospect new postcolonial fates through their potential permanent return. Her work has been generously supported by fellowships from the Mellon Foundation\, the National Science Foundation\, the Fulbright Foundation\, and Wenner Gren\, as creative fellowships from Hurston/Wright Foundation for Nonfiction\, and Voices of Our Nations Arts (VONA) Foundation for Fiction and Experimental Poetry. She received her Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of California\, Berkeley.\n\nCo-sponsors: Department of African and Afroamerican Studies

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: Large deviations for the deformed polynuclear growth
DESCRIPTION:The polynuclear growth model (PNG) is a prototypical example of random interface growth among the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In this talk I will discuss a q-deformation of the PNG model recently introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler. We are mainly interested in the large time large deviations of the one-point distribution under narrow-wedge (droplet) initial data\, i.e.\, the rare events that the height function at time t being much larger (upper tail) or much smaller (lower tail) than its expected value. Large deviation principles with speed t and t^2 are established for the upper and lower tails\, respectively. The upper tail rate function is computed explicitly and is independent of q. The lower tail rate function is described through a variational problem and shows nontrivial q-dependence. Based on joint work with Matteo Mucciconi and Sayan Das.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MICDE / ME seminar Olivier Desjardins: Multi-scale modeling of topology change in multiphase flow simulations
DESCRIPTION:Liquid atomization and spray formation are ubiquitous processes in nature as well as engineered system. Predicting droplet size distributions from first principle simulations presents a fantastic challenge due to the wide range of scales involved in topology change. In this talk\, we present new developments to the geometric volume of fluid method that enable the tracking of sub-grid scale interfacial features. By reconstructing the interface with multiple planar surfaces or with paraboloid surfaces\, we show that ligaments and sheets can be represented accurately independently of mesh resolution while preserving exact conservation\, good computational efficiency\, and easy integration with finite-volume-based flow solvers. A consequence of such strategies is that lack of mesh resolution no longer induces topology change\, which then needs to be reintroduced explicitly using physics-based models. We discuss various flavors of such models in the context of the break-up of thin liquid films\, a common feature in aerodynamic liquid atomization.\n\n\nBio: Prof. Desjardins' research focuses on large-scale numerical modeling of turbulent reacting multiphase flows with industrial application. Using world-class parallel computers\, his group develops numerical methods and models to investigate the multi-scale and multi-physics fluid mechanics problems that arise in a range of engineering devices\, such as combustors or biomass reactors.\n\nHigh-fidelity computational techniques such as large-eddy simulations and direct numerical simulations are at the heart of Dr. Desjardins' research. By enabling the exploration of complex non-linear flow physics from first principles\, these techniques have the potential to guide the development of highly optimized energy and propulsion systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: The Plucker Relations of the Grassmannian
DESCRIPTION:The Plucker map embeds the Grassmannian Gr(k\,n) into projective space -- namely\, the projectivization of the k-the exterior power of an n-dimensional vector space. Moreover\, the Plücker embedding satisfies an easily describable set of homogeneous quadratic relations called the Plucker relations. In this talk\, we'll introduce the Plucker embedding\, derive the Plucker relations\, and look at what this tells us about Gr(2\,4).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Rigid meromorphic cocycles for orthogonal groups
DESCRIPTION:Rigid meromorphic cocycles are defined in the setting of orthogonal groups of arbitrary real signature and constructed in some instances via a p-adic analogue of Borcherds' singular theta lift. The values of rigid meromorphic cocycles at special points of an associated p-adic symmetric space are then conjectured to belong to class fields of suitable global reflex fields\, suggesting an eventual framework for explicit class field theory beyond the setting of CM fields explored in the treatise of Shimura and Taniyama.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: Equivariant commutative algebra in positive characteristic
DESCRIPTION:In the presence of a large group action\, even non-noetherian rings sometimes behave like noetherian rings. For example\, Cohen proved that every symmetric ideal in the infinite variable polynomial ring is generated by finitely many polynomials (and their orbits under the infinite symmetric group). In this talk\, I will give a brief introduction to equivariant commutative algebra where we systematically study such noetherian phenomena in infinite variable polynomial rings\, and explain my work over fields of positive characteristic.
