SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar | Stochastic fluctuations in cells: a problem to overcome or an opportunity to exploit?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nBiological processes are complex and involve many components whose interactions are stochastic and only partially characterized. Instead of ignoring or guessing unknown details our work focuses on analyzing classes of complex processes that share some features but are left to vary arbitrarily in all unknown features. This allows us to derive impossibility constraints that can guide the design of synthetic biology applications and help us understand the operating principles of cellular processes. Additionally\, I will discuss how invariants for classes of incompletely specified systems can be exploited to infer rate functions and causal interactions in complex systems from observing stochastic fluctuations of a small subset of components. Such approaches have the potential to turn quantitatively intractable complex systems into a sequence of solvable inference problems.\n\nThis talk will be recorded for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag **Special Seminar** | Heisenberg's Path to Quantum Mechanics
DESCRIPTION:**Special Seminar** Please note time and location\nIn the summer of 1925\, Heisenberg wrote the paper Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen\, which laid the foundations of quantum mechanics. For a long time\, this paper was considered to be inscrutable. This talk will show how one can make sense both of Heisenberg's formal manipulations and of his philosophical rhetoric\, in particular by studying the letters he wrote in months leading up to his breakthrough. A particular emphasis will be placed on how different the theory that Heisenberg originally aimed to construct was from modern quantum mechanics

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - Molecular Evolution of Predatory Traits in Rattlesnakes
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our weekly Tuesday seminar series.\n\nFor my seminar\, Hogan will be presenting his findings from his research on the genetics of how predatory traits evolve. This project takes a deep dive into the genomic\, transcriptomic\, and proteomic machinery underlying trait evolution in North America's largest venomous snake\, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. Hogan's talk will focus on how sensory and venom genes respond to overlapping selective pressures\, such as prey preference\, and will also discuss how he was able to identify key regulatory factors controlling a major ontogenetic shift in venom composition for this species.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Dao: A Second Century BCE Conceptual Biography
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom. Zoom registration at https://myumi.ch/qG4P4.\n\nThis talk looks at the different roles that the concept of Dao played in political and philosophical arguments\, and epistemically across multiple discourses and genres in the 100's BCE. It centers on three key sources: the Changsha Mawangdui excavated texts (circa 168 BCE)\, the Huainan court texts sponsored by Liu An (179-122 BCE)\, and the Records of the Archivist (Shiji) produced by the Simas at the end of the century.\n \n Dr. Csikszentmihàlyi is the Eliaser Chair of International Studies\, Interim Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures\, and Director of the Group in the Study of Religion at University of California at Berkeley. He has a PhD in Asian Languages from Stanford University and an AB in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. He uses both excavated and transmitted texts to reconstruct the religions\, philosophies\, and cultures of early China. His most recent book is \"Technical Arts in the Han Histories: Tables and Treatises in the Shiji and Hanshu\" (2021) and next year Reaktion Books will publish his “Confucius: A New Tradition.” He is also the editor of the journal \"Early China.\"

SUMMARY:Film Screening:POSTPONED - CAS Film | Aurora's Sunrise - Ann Arbor Screening
DESCRIPTION:*These film screenings have been postponed to a still to-be-determined date later in October. Once we have received the new times from the State Theatre we will post them here. We apologize for the inconvenience.*\n\nThe Center for Armenian Studies is sponsoring the weeklong Michigan release of Aurora's Sunrise at State Theatre.\n\nShowtimes listed here will be updated as we receive the details. You may also check for updates at: https://myumi.ch/Jp2Gx\n\nDirector Inna Sahakyan will be in attendance for post-film Q&As on Friday\, September 29th at 3:00 & 7:00 PM.\n \nSynopsis: At only 14 years old\, Aurora lost everything during the horror of the Armenian genocide. Two years later\, through luck and extraordinary courage\, she escaped to New York\, where her story became a media sensation. Starring as herself in Auction of Souls\, an early Hollywood blockbuster\, Aurora became the face of one of the largest charity campaigns in American history. With a blend of vivid animation\, interviews with Aurora herself\, and 18 minutes of surviving footage from her lost silent epic\, Aurora's Sunrise revives a forgotten story of survival. Synopsis Aurora was a teenager when she lost her family to the first genocide of the twentieth century\, a nightmare that she herself barely survived. But when asked to not just remember but relive this experience all over again\, she said “yes”. In 1915\, as WWI raged on\, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time\, Aurora’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert\, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. But through multiple miraculous twists of fate\, Aurora was able to use her wits and courage to escape her captors\, and find her way to the shores of the United States. Young\, beautiful\, and with an extraordinary story to tell — the papers quickly found Aurora\, and within a year her story of survival was on every newsstand from coast to coast. It didn’t take long for Hollywood to take notice. With little regard for the toll it would take on the traumatised teenager\, they convinced Aurora that by bringing her story to the silver screen she would be able to help other survivors of the genocide. And so Aurora relived the unbearable\, and became the most improbable starlet of the silent era in Auction of Souls\, a runaway success\, breaking box office and fundraising campaign records. After the film’s release\, one out of every three American families reportedly contributed to the campaign to help the victims of the genocide. With the help of the film\, a campaign by the aid group Near East Relief raised $116 million and saved the lives of over 132\,000 orphaned survivors. The number of their descendants are in the millions. In the late 1920s\, expanding US-Turkish relations caused any mention of the Genocide to fade away. All copies of Auction of Souls were believed to be lost. Only in 1994\, several months after Aurora's death\, fragments of Auction of Souls were rediscovered. Utilizing a dynamic blend of different mediums\, including archival interviews with Aurora herself\, as well the restored surviving footage of Aurora’s silent-era blockbuster Aurora’s Sunrise brings Aurora’s incredible story to life for a new generation — the story of how one girl relived her life’s greatest pain to save her people.\n\n*\"Aurora's Sunrise\" was made possible by the academic contribution of the Zoryan Institute and is based on its Oral History Archive.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Other:Banned Books Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:Stop by for a free book! To mark Banned Books Week (https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned) we're giving away copies of some recently published books that have been banned or challenged because they address sexuality\, race\, gender\, and other topics. All are welcome\, and we're inviting some campus VIPs to participate.\n\nThis year's theme\, \"Let Freedom Read!\" faces off against the spread of book bans\, both nationwide and here in Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Autonomous Vehicles Make Our Roads Safer — CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:We are living in an exciting time where autonomous vehicles (AVs) are at the forefront of transportation technology. Technology comes with its share of disruption\, and changes like driverless cars can take time to settle in. However\, we are already beginning to see some of the benefits that driverless cars offer to road safety and the broader accessibility of transportation. \n\nIn this seminar\, Dr. Louise Zhang will share the aggregate safety performance of the Cruise AV fleet and discuss how they achieve safety in individual driving scenarios. They will also detail the framework that governs Cruise's safety metrics\, safety decision-making and risk management processes\, and the methodologies and approaches that help improve safety performance. Finally\, they will expand on the continuous feedback and learning mechanisms that have been adopted to enable rapid AV capability development and fleet scaling while maintaining a high bar of safety performance.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Two-dimensional information choice in committees
DESCRIPTION:This paper shows how the voting rule impacts about which characteristics of an alternative voters learn. Before casting their vote\, voters can learn about an objective quality of the alternative or about their idiosyncratic type. How voters allocate their learning attention across characteristics is shown to be nonmonotonic in the voting rule: the further the quota is from a simple majority rule\, the less voters learn about the objective quality and the more dispersed are their beliefs about the alternative. The voting rule can substantially affect the probability of implementing a low-quality alternative or rejecting a high-quality one. Ex ante\, voters strictly prefer a simple majority voting rule to any other quota.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Number Theory: Internal structure of L-packets for p-adic groups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The local Langlands correspondence predicts that there is a finite-to-one map between the set of irreducible\, admissible representations of a group G and the set of L-parameters of G. While the local Langlands correspondence has been established in many cases\, the internal structure of L-packets is not explicitly known except in a few special cases. In this talk\, we will describe one approach to study the internal structure. This approach is based on the case of SL(2\,Qp) whose L-packets are parametrized by irreducible representations of subgroups of the Klein 4-group.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Research Talk: Lauren Czerniak
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract: \nHospital pharmacy managers make decisions for thousands of different drugs. This motivates inventory policies that are (a) quick to solve and (b) easy to implement. Further\, these inventory policies must capture the two key characteristics in a hospital pharmacy inventory system: perishability and supply chain disruptions. This talk will focus on closed-form solutions for a perishable lost-sales (R\,S) periodic review inventory system with supply chain disruptions. Using a drug case study\, the talk will also provide insights on the (i) impact of ignoring perishability and supply chain disruptions\, (ii) importance of accounting for the length and time between supply chain disruptions\, and (iii) influence of stochastic demand.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nLauren Czerniak is an Industrial and Operations Engineering PhD candidate at the University of Michigan where she is being co-advised by Mark S. Daskin and Mariel S. Lavieri. Her research focuses on developing and applying stochastic models to address current challenges in healthcare with applications in pharmaceutical drugs\, glaucoma\, and concussion management. She is a Rackham Merit Fellow and a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Many-Body Dynamics in Atomic Arrays (Without Solving Equations)
DESCRIPTION:Solving for the dynamics of many-body quantum systems is typically hard\, unless there is a high degree of symmetry present. An example of the latter in the context of quantum optics is Dicke superradiance\, where excited atoms self-organize as they decay\, emitting a short and intense pulse of light. While well understood in a cavity\, the problem of many-body decay in extended systems remains open\, due to the exponential growth of complexity with atom number. In this talk\, I will discuss how coherent behavior emerges in extended quantum systems\, and how to understand the dynamics in atomic arrays without the need of heavy computation. Our analytical results provide insights on the critical role of dimensionality on the many-body dynamics\, as well as point to universal behavior that is lattice-geometry independent. Our predictions can be tested in state of the art experiments with arrays of neutral atoms\, and pave the way towards understanding the role of many-body decay in extended systems for metrology and lasing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Effects of Network Structure on Spreading of Innovations
DESCRIPTION:Spreading (diffusion) of new products is a classical problem. Traditionally\, it has been analyzed using the compartmental Bass model\, which implicitly assumes that all individuals are homogeneous and connected to each other. To relax these assumptions\, research has gradually shifted to the more fundamental Bass model on networks\, which is an agent-based model for the stochastic adoption decision of each individual. In this talk\, I will present the emerging mathematical theory for the Bass model on networks. The main focus will be on the effect of network structure. For example\, which networks yield the slowest and fastest adoption? I will also discuss the effect of heterogeneity among individuals: Does it always slow down the adoption? Can it be neglected?

SUMMARY:Other:ELO | WTY Systems Thinking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Systems Thinking Workshop\npart of the UMSI Theme Year on Water Conservation & Access\n\nFacilitated by Paul Seelbach\, Retired School for Environment and Sustainability Professor of Practice\n\nSystems thinking is a method used to make sense of the complexity of the world by looking at it in terms of wholes and relationships rather than through evaluating separate parts. It has been used as a way of exploring and developing effective action in complex contexts\, enabling systems change. In this workshop\, students will explore and consider water-related challenges and complex water processes through a systems lens. This will involve an introduction to systems theory\, considering patches and connectivity within systems\, thinking about what role humans play within systems\, and placing systems thinking in the information context. Students will be provided an interactive opportunity to apply learning within group activities. This event is part of the UMSI Theme Year: Water Conservation and Access series.\n\nUse the Registration Link to the right!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Meta(mor)phrases: Translation as a Transformative Act
DESCRIPTION:A Vakalo Family Visiting Artist Presentation\n\nMarios Chatziprokopiou\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Culture and Creative Media and Industries\, University of Thessaly\, Greece.\n\nConsidering translation (metáfrasis) as a metaphor (from latin translatus\, that is a ‘carrying over’ or ‘carrying across’ of meaning)\, this presentation builds upon his own practice as a poet\, performer\, and translator\, in order to unpack the process of translating as a key artistic methodology which can lead to metamorphotic acts. Through this perspective\, which emanates from texts but also slides between the voice and the body\, he will perform and discuss parts of his book ‘Topical Tropics’ (Τοπικοί Tροπικοί\, Antipodes\, 2019)\, his current projects including Schebermaschine\, and his translations of Clarice Lispector into Modern Greek. Key elements are queer desire and lament\; fluid genders and genres\; fictive archives\; corporeal biographies\; polyphonic oralities\; liminal vocal states\; and the (im)possibilities of reappropriated myths.\n\nMarios Chatziprokopiou has studied and worked in Spain\, France\, Brazil\, and Wales and is currently based in Greece. Shortlisted for the State Literary Award for Best Poetry\, his book ‘Topical Tropics’ (Τοπικοί Tροπικοί\, Antipodes\, 2019) explores issues of queer mourning and desire in connection to oral traditions. Blurring the limits between fiction and criticism\, he has performed and lectured internationally. Marios has translated four books by Clarice Lispector\, and has collaborated as a dramaturg with several theatre companies. Published in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes\, his research focuses on performances of migration and displacement\, contemporary re-readings of the classics\, performances of gender and sexuality\, and rituals of lament. He works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Culture and Creative Media and Industries at the University of Thessaly\, Greece.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Stabilizing Radical Processes
DESCRIPTION:Our group kinetically traps reactive intermediates from group transfer catalysis or small molecule activation processes. Using molecular design\, we can use steric confinement or Lewis acid coordination to stabilize reactive radicaloid ligands. We examine the electronic structure of the transition metal-element multiple bonds using a variety of spectroscopic and theoretical means. The electronic structure of the ensuing complexes will be examined for efficacy in group transfer catalysis. As the nuclearity of the reaction site expands\, we examine how oxidation state and ligand field effects influence small molecule activation and redox distribution throughout the cluster cores.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dave & Kristi with Their Showband
DESCRIPTION:“Irrepressible verve and joy”—Daniel Bracken\, Wheatland Music \n\nDave Boutette's Midwest is full of passion\, humor\, and a certain shaky grace. Influenced by songwriters from Chuck Berry to John Prine to Elvis Costello\, he documents the travels and triumphs of life in the heartland. Dave grew up in Detroit's shadow\, and he peppers his performances with stories of his home and his life on the road. Kristi Lynn Davis logged in about 1\,200 performances and 240\,000 kicks as a Radio City Rockette. She also sailed the globe as a singer-dancer on cruise ships and worked in musical theater productions with showbiz icons Susan Anton\, Buddy Ebsen\, Maurice Hines\, Jack Jones\, Paige O’Hara\, Juliet Prowse\, Rip Taylor\, and others. Kristi’s had so many adventures in show business\, she had to write a book to keep them all straight. Her award-winning comic memoir is titled \"Long Legs and Tall Tales.\" Close\, comforting\, and warm\, Kristi’s voice slips in right beside Dave’s\, and her charming and confident stage presence\, along with her quick wit\, are adding a whole new appeal to Dave’s shows. Together they have performed at music festivals\, listening rooms\, and brewpubs from the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula all the way down to Oberlin\, Ohio. Tonight marks their first show with a full band.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3946/3947 for more detail.
