SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Seminar | Non-perturbative de Sitter quantum gravity in low dimensions
DESCRIPTION:Little is known about non-perturbative quantum gravity in de Sitter spacetimes. As a useful low-dimensional model\, we consider de Sitter Jackiw-Teitelboim (dS JT) gravity and solve it non-perturbatively in the genus expansion. This amounts to the first non-perturbatively solvable model of de Sitter cosmology. We find that dS JT gravity has an effective string coupling which is pure imaginary\, rendering the S-matrix genus expansion Borel resummable. We further establish that dS JT gravity is dual to a formal matrix integral with a negative number of degrees of freedom. More broadly\, our analysis unveils new ingredients in the de Sitter holographic dictionary\, which may be applicable in more general contexts.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Deligne's theorem in positive characteristic
DESCRIPTION:Deligne proved that in characteristic zero\, every tensor category of subexponential growth is super Tannakian. In this talk\, I will survey recent work of Etingof\, Ostrik et al aimed at extending this theorem to positive characteristic. I will introduce the Verlinde category\, and explain why this is a counterexample to Deligne's theorem in char p >= 5. I don't plan to prove anything except basic lemmas and tautologies\, but hope to provide the overarching narrative of this line of research with the help of several (counter-)examples and precise questions/results.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Unearthing and Reckoning with Ukrainian Family History
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Cleveland in the final years of the Cold War\, writer Megan Buskey understood little about her Ukrainian family’s traumatic history. It was only well into adolescence that she learned that her mother had grown up in a gulag exile settlement in Siberia because her grandparents had been deported there from their Ukrainian village after the Second World War.\n \n As an adult\, Megan spent years researching her family’s experience for her book\, *Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet: A Family Story of Exile and Return* (ibidem\, 2023). Praised as “a painfully honest and carefully researched journey of a Ukrainian American into her family’s complicated and difficult past” by historian Jan Gross\, it provides a personal tour through essential and sometimes disturbing aspects of recent Ukrainian history\, including sexual violence\, Nazi collaboration\, and Ukrainian nationalism.\n \n In this talk\, Megan Buskey will explain the significance of Ukrainian family history in light of the restrictions placed on memory during the Soviet period\, share what she learned about her family’s experience\, and connect their story to current politics\, specifically Russia's invasion of Ukraine.\n \n Megan Buskey is the author of *Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet: A Family Story of Exile and Return* (ibidem\, 2023). She has written about Ukrainian history\, politics\, and culture for a variety of publications\, including *The Atlantic\, The Boston Globe\, The Virginia Quarterly Review\, The American Scholar*\, and *n+1*.\n \n She has been traveling to and studying the former Soviet Union for two decades\, including a year spent living in Ukraine as a Fulbright Fellow. She has also received fellowships from the German-American Fulbright Commission\, the Logan Nonfiction Program at the Carey Institute of Global Good\, and the London Library. She was born in Cleveland\, Ohio\, and currently lives in New York City.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Film Screening:POSTPONED - CAS Film | Aurora's Sunrise - Ann Arbor Screening
DESCRIPTION:*These film screenings have been postponed to a still to-be-determined date later in October. Once we have received the new times from the State Theatre we will post them here. We apologize for the inconvenience.*\n\nThe Center for Armenian Studies is sponsoring the weeklong Michigan release of Aurora's Sunrise at State Theatre.\n\nShowtimes listed here will be updated as we receive the details. You may also check for updates at: https://myumi.ch/Jp2Gx\n\nDirector Inna Sahakyan will be in attendance for post-film Q&As on Friday\, September 29th at 3:00 & 7:00 PM.\n \nSynopsis: At only 14 years old\, Aurora lost everything during the horror of the Armenian genocide. Two years later\, through luck and extraordinary courage\, she escaped to New York\, where her story became a media sensation. Starring as herself in Auction of Souls\, an early Hollywood blockbuster\, Aurora became the face of one of the largest charity campaigns in American history. With a blend of vivid animation\, interviews with Aurora herself\, and 18 minutes of surviving footage from her lost silent epic\, Aurora's Sunrise revives a forgotten story of survival. Synopsis Aurora was a teenager when she lost her family to the first genocide of the twentieth century\, a nightmare that she herself barely survived. But when asked to not just remember but relive this experience all over again\, she said “yes”. In 1915\, as WWI raged on\, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time\, Aurora’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert\, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. But through multiple miraculous twists of fate\, Aurora was able to use her wits and courage to escape her captors\, and find her way to the shores of the United States. Young\, beautiful\, and with an extraordinary story to tell — the papers quickly found Aurora\, and within a year her story of survival was on every newsstand from coast to coast. It didn’t take long for Hollywood to take notice. With little regard for the toll it would take on the traumatised teenager\, they convinced Aurora that by bringing her story to the silver screen she would be able to help other survivors of the genocide. And so Aurora relived the unbearable\, and became the most improbable starlet of the silent era in Auction of Souls\, a runaway success\, breaking box office and fundraising campaign records. After the film’s release\, one out of every three American families reportedly contributed to the campaign to help the victims of the genocide. With the help of the film\, a campaign by the aid group Near East Relief raised $116 million and saved the lives of over 132\,000 orphaned survivors. The number of their descendants are in the millions. In the late 1920s\, expanding US-Turkish relations caused any mention of the Genocide to fade away. All copies of Auction of Souls were believed to be lost. Only in 1994\, several months after Aurora's death\, fragments of Auction of Souls were rediscovered. Utilizing a dynamic blend of different mediums\, including archival interviews with Aurora herself\, as well the restored surviving footage of Aurora’s silent-era blockbuster Aurora’s Sunrise brings Aurora’s incredible story to life for a new generation — the story of how one girl relived her life’s greatest pain to save her people.\n\n*\"Aurora's Sunrise\" was made possible by the academic contribution of the Zoryan Institute and is based on its Oral History Archive.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: The Well-foundedness of Cardinals and the Axiom of Choice
DESCRIPTION:The question of whether the well-foundedness of cardinals implies the Axiom of Choice has been raised on many occasions\, and remains a major open problem. In the complete absence of Choice\, however\, there turn out to be various notions of well-foundedness. These notions will be discussed\, alongside the implications among them. Some implications between these and other weak forms of Choice (including Dependent Choice and the Partition Principle) will also be discussed. This talk is based on joint work with Andreas Blass.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - Using Partially Synthetic Frames to Evaluate Alternative Sample Designs for Estimating a Rare Business Characteristic
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nOctober 4\, 2023\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research\, and via Zoom. The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nUsing Partially Synthetic Frames to Evaluate Alternative Sample Designs for Estimating a Rare Business Characteristic\n\nKatherine Jenny Thompson\, U.S. Census Bureau\nHang Joon Kim (University of Cincinnati)\nStephen Kaputa (U.S. Census Bureau)\n\nIn the “traditional'” finite population sampling framework\, the sample designer has a complete list (frame) of eligible units with classification information and auxiliary variables related to surveyed characteristics. In our setting\, the frame auxiliary variables are weakly related to the survey characteristic\, which is not present for most units. Hence\, using frame auxiliary variables to assess survey design efficacy can be misleading. Instead\, we propose generating multiple partially synthetic frames\, modeling characteristic values for each unit on the frame\, then drawing repeated samples from each synthetic frame using the candidate sample design(s) to assess finite sample performance for each design within and between the synthetic frames. Focusing on establishment survey data\, we illustrate our proposed approach on a subset of industries surveyed annually by the Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey.\n\nKatherine Jenny Thompson is the Senior Mathematical Statistician in the Economic Directorate of the Census Bureau. Jenny holds a masters of science degree in Applied Statistics from the George Washington University and an bachelor or arts degree in Mathematics from Oberlin College. She is an American Statistical Association (ASA) Fellow\, an elected member of the International Statistics Institute\, and the Vice President Elect of the ASA. She is the Survey Statistics Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Official Statistics. She has published papers on a variety of topics related to complex surveys in several journals\, including the Journal of Official Statistics\, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A)\, Survey Methodology\, Annals of Applied Statistics\, International Statistical Review\, Journal of Survey Sampling and Methodology\, and Public Opinion Quarterly.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Extracting information about our universe from photometric wide-field galaxy surveys
DESCRIPTION:Photometric wide field galaxy surveys are playing a growingly important role in our toolkits for understanding the universe. It is an art of data analysis and statistics to compress the huge amount of information of hundreds millions of galaxies into several degrees of freedoms describing our universe\, and it takes extensive modulized steps and human forces to accomplish the whole analysis. I am one of the analyzers working downstream of the pipeline\, dedicated to extracting model-level features from the cosmological data products of a photometric wide field galaxy survey. In this talk\, I will present the results and/or methodologies on several physical property that we are interested in extracting from the Year-1 and Year-3 galaxy clustering and weak lensing data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES)\, including 1. The fraction of the dark matter that has decayed since the end of the inflation\, 2. The baryonic feedback effect on the matter power spectrum\, and 3. The kinematic dipole in the galaxy clustering.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Family preferences and horizontal differentiation in urban school choice markets
DESCRIPTION:Urban public school systems in the United States frequently offer a wide range of curricular options. For example\, New York City students can choose to attend high schools focused on topics as varied as legal studies\, journalism\, and performing arts\, among others. I use New York City high school application data to investigate the implications of diverse curricular offerings for segregation and student outcomes. I estimate a structural model using data on student application and enrollment decisions to determine how much weight families place on curricular themes relative to other school characteristics. I find that relative to baseline enrollment\, a simulated counterfactual that equalizes preferences across themes reduces segregation by achievement\, with smaller changes in segregation by race and income. Finally\, I exploit random and quasi-random variation in the school assignment process to explore how assignment to a school that aligns with one’s academic interest affects high school outcomes.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Labor Economics Seminar\, sponsored in part by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Abraham and Thelma Zwerdling Labor Economics Program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics -- The Totally Nonnegative Grassmannian as a Positive Geometry
DESCRIPTION:The Grassmannian Gr(k\,n) has a stratification into positroid varieties which can be indexed by many objects including move-equivalence classes of reduced plabic graphs and bounded affine permutations. Given a bounded affine permutation f\, the positroid variety $\Pi_f$ and the corresponding positroid cell $\Pi_{f\,\geq 0}$ in the TNN Grassmannian form a positive geometry $(\Pi_f\, \Pi_{f\,\geq 0})$. We will see how to compute the canonical form of a positroid variety using a reduced plabic graph corresponding to that variety.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The science of FRIB: From the nuclear many-body challenge to the origin of the elements in the Universe
DESCRIPTION:There are approximately 300 stable and 3\,000 known unstable (rare) isotopes. Estimates are that over 7\,000 different isotopes are bound by the nuclear force. It is now recognized that the properties of many yet undiscovered rare isotopes hold the key to understanding how to develop a comprehensive and predictive model of atomic nuclei\, to accurately model a variety of astrophysical environments\, and to understand the origin and history of elements in the Universe. Some of these isotopes also offer the possibility to study nature's underlying fundamental symmetries and to explore new societal applications of rare isotopes. This presentation will give a glimpse of the opportunities that arise at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) that started operations at Michigan State University in 2022.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Plasmas for Propulsion: Alternative Propellants and (Some) Emerging Concepts
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe space industry is currently experiencing unprecedented growth with estimates suggesting that between 20\,000 – 300\,000 satellites could be launched in the next ten years. The majority of such satellites will require some form of propulsion to enable mission success and ensure a sustain-able space environment: particularly within the context of space domain awareness and space traffic management concerns. Electric propulsion systems are an attractive choice because of their high performance\, but evolving mission needs\, and various market pressures\, have created several challenges associated with conventional propellants and existing technologies. This talk will explore emerging alternative propellants for important plasma-based propulsion systems such as gridded ion and Hall thrusters\, and give an overview of the current state-of-the-art. It will also look at a novel electrothermal propulsion system that uses an inductive plasma to superheat propellant\, and the potential compatibility of such an electrodeless discharge with a wide range of alternative propellants. Finally\, we end by considering an innovative propellantless propulsion concept that exploits the natural ionospheric plasma around the Earth.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nTrevor joined the School of Engineering and Technology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra in early 2023 where he is also affiliated with the space re-search group\, UNSW Canberra Space. Before this\, Trevor was a principal engineer at ThrustMe – a French deep-tech company developing propulsion systems for satellites – and founder of PlasmaPotential – a company providing technical consulting to clients in the semiconductor and space industries. Trevor received his PhD in plasma physics from the Australian National University in 2011 and has subsequently worked with several institutes including Ecole Polytechnique\, ONERA – The French Aerospace Lab\, and the French Space Agency (CNES). His research focuses on the application of plasmas to different ground- and space-based applications\, as well as understanding fundamental plasma processes such as collisions and instabilities.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Minimal Model Program for Generalized Pairs and Foliations
DESCRIPTION:The Minimal Model Program aims to classify all algebraic varieties X (up to birational equivalence) via three building blocks: Fano varieties\, Calabi-Yau varieties and canonically polarized varieties. Given a fibration from X to Z\, for inductive reasons\, we want to induce canonically certain structures on both X and Z associated to the fibration. It turns out that the correct structures are foliations and generalized pairs. The latter were formally introduced by Birkar and Zhang. I will talk about some recent progress in the Minimal Model Program for both generalized pairs and foliations. This talk is based on a series of joint works with G.Chen\, J. Han\, J. Liu and N.Tsakanikas.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Artist Talk and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor) on Wednesday 10/4 to celebrate Sarah Buckius’ innovative exhibition !!!techn010ffspring!!! Refreshments\, community\, and conversation will be available starting at 4pm. At 5pm the artist will give a talk on the exhibition\, its origins\, and her process in Lane Hall 2239. There will be time for Q&A.\n\nAbout the exhibit: \nSarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is an exhibition where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. \n\nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. \n\nAbout the Artist: \nSarah Buckius is an artist\, educator\, and engineer who lives in Santa Cruz\, California. Originally from the midwest (Champaign\, IL)\, she holds an M.F.A. from The University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. Her creative work\, which incorporates digital media (video\, photography\, collage\, animation) and performance\, has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Through her work\, she weaves \"Intertwined HerStories\" that originate from the cross-section of *-gender-*-technology-*-lens-based-media-*-the human body-*-caregiving-*. She works in the space of absurdity that emerges at the point of disconnect between the seemingly coded / structured / ordered / production-based space of technology and the messy / complex / idiosyncratic space of humanity and is interested in uncovering the ways in which working with and creating technology illuminates humanness\, including gender biases. With an underlying goal of supporting DEI in STEM fields\, her work illuminates the ingenuity of diverse groups of people.\n\n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Arts Council Santa Cruz County.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Extreme Value Theory for particle systems with mean-field drift interaction.
DESCRIPTION:We establish an Extreme Value Theory for a class of systems of diffusive particles with mean-field interaction in the drifts. First\, we show that as the number of particles grows large\, a point process that captures the upper order statistics of the system has the same limit as when the particles are replaced by independent copies of solution to the corresponding McKean-Vlasov SDE (propagation of chaos). Then\, we employ tools from standard Extreme Value Theory along with Malliavin Calculus to characterize the limit. We deduce that under certain growth conditions\, the normalized top-ranked particle will acquire a Gumbel law in the large-population limit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Factor-Biased Outsourcing: Implications for Substitution between Capital and Labor
DESCRIPTION:Outsourcing can be factor biased\, displacing disproportionately either capital or labor inside the firm. Relying solely on the assumption of homogeneous input demand\, this paper shows that factor-biased outsourcing leads the capital–labor ratio to respond differently to a change in the price of labor and to a change in the price of capital. Indirect estimates based on a meta analysis of studies since the 1960s\, as well as direct estimates using U.S. data for 1963–2016\, indicate that outsourcing principally displaces labor and that\, consequently\, the capital-labor ratio responds 30-80% more strongly to the price of labor than to the price of capital. These findings also help reframe historical disagreements regarding the extent of capital–labor substitution\, and they have direct implications for modeling production and cost\, implying that capital and labor are not separable from outsourced inputs.\n\n\nThis talk is presented by the Macroeconomics Seminar\, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Michael Beauregard Fund for Macroeconomics and the Economics Strategic Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Policy Talks at The Ford School: The Injustice of Place
DESCRIPTION:Join for a conversation with the co-authors of The Injustice of Place alongside Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee and Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan COO Nicole Sherard-Freeman. Released in August 2023\, The Injustice of Place sheds light on America’s most disadvantaged communities\, tracing the legacies of our nation’s places of deepest need—including inequalities shaping people’s health\, livelihoods\, and upward social mobility for families. Wrung dry by powerful forces and corrupt government officials\, the “internal colonies” in these regions were exploited for their resources and then left to collapse. \n\nThe book's co-authors will reflect briefly on the book\, followed by an armchair conversation with Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI) and Nicole Sherard-Freeman (COO\, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan). \n\nAbout The Injustice of Place\nThree of the nation’s top scholars – known for tackling key mysteries about poverty in America – turn their attention from the country’s poorest people to its poorest places. Based on a fresh\, data-driven approach\, they discover that America’s most disadvantaged communities are not the big cities that get the most notice. Instead\, nearly all are rural. Little if any attention has been paid to these places or to the people who make their lives there.\n\nThis revelation set in motion a five-year journey across Appalachia\, the Cotton and Tobacco Belts of the Deep South\, and South Texas. Immersing themselves in these communities\, pouring over centuries of local history\, attending parades and festivals\, the authors trace the legacies of the deepest poverty in America—including inequalities shaping people’s health\, livelihoods\, and upward social mobility for families. Wrung dry by powerful forces and corrupt government officials\, the “internal colonies” in these regions were exploited for their resources and then left to collapse.\n\nThe unfolding revelation in The Injustice of Place is not about what sets these places apart\, but about what they have in common—a history of raw\, intensive resource extraction and human exploitation. This history and its reverberations demand a reckoning and a commitment to wage a new War on Poverty\, with the unrelenting focus on our nation’s places of deepest need.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Michigan: Healthcare Moneyball - Associate Job in Healthcare Consulting with IQVIA!
DESCRIPTION:Why Moneyball?\n\nNo worries\, we aren’t looking for candidates with backgrounds in sports\, reading Michael Lewis novels\, or indulging in Brad Pitt movies. In the early 2000s\, the Oakland Athletics baseball team implemented enhanced statistical insights to understand the real value of players\, as opposed to “old-school” approaches that are outdated\, subjective\, and often flawed. Using enhanced insights\, the A’s remained a competitive baseball team despite having limited funds to pay high-value players and managers – their unique approach to better gain insight about players had ushered in an era of new thinking to the game and enhanced insights are now a necessity to “play ball” in every industry.\n\nIn our world of healthcare\, ongoing changes in patient insurance coverage\, continued impacts from COVID-19\, increasing industry consolidation\, and the growth in expensive transformative therapeutics continue to challenge the life sciences landscape. These changes at a macro-level have ripple effects across the country. For example\, the “greying” of the US is leading to approximately 15 M people enrolling in Medicare over the next ten years\, but this impact is likely to increase more so in specific states and geographies. Furthermore\, the growth in high deductibles continue to drive higher costs across the landscape of various treatment options.\n\nAs a result\, we support our clients by developing “Moneyball” like solutions to provide better insights for our clients to adapt to a demanding market. Our team uses the power of healthcare data to help manufacturers measure the impact of market access on brand performance and the cascading influence this has on how prescribers and patients gain access to innovative therapies. We support manufacturers by providing deep insights into the geographic variations of patient\, insurer\, and prescriber behaviorand thereby help manufacturers implement more effective strategies for sales execution\, insurer contracting\, net revenue optimization\, and all varieties of patient assistance programs.\n\nPlease join for a deeper dive into the type of work IQVIA’s Market Access Strategy Consulting team does daily. You will hear from two of our top Principals – Ross Perak and Sayantan Niyogi. Access represents one of the most critical barriers to patients accessing the therapies they need. Health insurers restrict patient access to therapies that carry less value for them\, posing an obvious puzzle for us to solve.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:From Peopling to Persistent Places: tracking cultural change from the Pleistocene to Early Holocene in the Southeast
DESCRIPTION:The peopling of the Americas took place at the end of the Pleistocene sometime after the Last Glacial Maximum (28\,000-19\,000 BP)\, and the earliest evidence of these hunter-gatherers in the Southeast dates to approximately 15\,000 years ago. Upon arrival\, they explored and settled empty and unknown landscapes\, developed new technological adaptations\, and\, by the Early Holocene\, grew into socially connected yet regionally diverse populations. In this presentation\, we use the stone tool record to trace early cultural regionalization in Clovis (13\,000 BP). We explore Late Paleoindian responses to environmental fluctuations of the Younger Dryas. We show that by 12\,000 years ago\, Dalton populations had established sacred and persistent places on the landscape\, and we track the continued importance of place through evidence of aggregation among Early Archaic Kirk populations (10\,000 BP).
