SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Near-Death Experience
DESCRIPTION:Near-death experience (NDE) has captivated humanity throughout history. As mortal beings\, we are bound to confront the end of life eventually\, and the way we or our loved ones pass away holds great significance for many. NDE encompasses a broad spectrum of experiences\, occurring when individuals are objectively on the verge of death or when they subjectively believe they are. These experiences\, reported across diverse cultural and religious backgrounds\, are characterized by a heightened sense of lucidity and realism. They challenge the notion that consciousness dissipates when the brain ceases functioning\, as NDEs often involve a state of internal awareness during an otherwise unresponsive condition.\n\nKeynote Speakers\n\nCharlotte Martial\, PhD\n*Impact of near-death experience research on models of consciousness*\nPostdoctoral Researcher\, Neuropsychologist\nComa Science Group\nQuartier Hôpital\, Belgium\n\n\nJimo Borjigin\, PhD\n*Neural correlates of covert consciousness in the dying brain*\nAssociate Professor\, Neuroscientist\nMolecular & Integrative Physiology and Neurology\nUniversity of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, MI\, USA\n\nBasil Eldadah\, MD\, PhD\n*Paradoxical Lucidity: Findings from an NIA-Supported Initiative*\nSupervisory Medical Officer\nDivision of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology (DGCG)\nNIH/National Institute on Aging\, USA

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute Seminar | Integrated Optical Control of Atomic Quantum Systems
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Amit Agrawal\, project leader of the Ultrafast Nano-Optics Group within the Physical Measurement Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology\, will be presenting as part of the Quantum Research Institute's Fall seminar series.\n\nSeminar Description:\nOptical control of quantum matter – from trapped atoms and ions to quantum dots and defects\, is foundational for quantum information science and technology. Development of integrated photonics opens the possibility for realization of scalable circuits with complex functionalities\, advancing both science and technology frontiers and enabling real-world applications in quantum sensing and precision measurements. Here\, we present our work on scalable\, robust and multifunctional nanophotonic interfaces to trap neutral atoms or address trapped ions. Our nanophotonic platform\, replacing bulk optical elements\, promises increased complexity and functionality in a batch-fabricated optical microsystem ultimately fully replacing the laboratory optical table to enable cold atom clocks and quantum computers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | Contested Bodies: Female Imagery in Pre-War Okinawa
DESCRIPTION:Fujita Tsuguharu’s Okinawan painting of the 1930s offers critical insights into the complex role of art in negotiating the social asymmetries of the “contact zone” (Pratt 2007). How can we understand his portraits and those of his Okinawan colleagues—artists\, and admirers\, such as Ōshiro Kōya and Nadoyama Aijun—as they struggled to visually conceptualize the relationship between the mainland and its colonial subject? By examining rarely discussed pre-Pacific war paintings of Okinawan women by both mainland and Okinawan artists\, this essay will explore ways in which the representation of the female form—the canonical object of the exoticizing gaze—offered both colonizer and colonized space to explore the ambivalences\, the contradictions\, and the brutalities of the colonial endeavor.\n \n Eriko Tomizawa-Kay is a historian of modern Japanese art specializing in *nihonga* (lit. Japanese painting) of the Meiji era. An aspect of *nihonga* that she is particularly interested in is the transnational development of *nihonga* and the emergence of *nihonga* collections outside of Japan. Her passion for *nihonga* has led her to explore various locations\, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, and\, more recently\, Okinawa. By examining Okinawan art\, she is seeking to question the conventional master-narrative of Japanese art history.\n\nHer approach in researching Okinawan art is to reassess the importance of symbiotic relationships between the islands of the Okinawan chain in regional\, transregional\, and transnational contexts\; covering\, in particular\, the socio-cultural complexities of Okinawan identity\, and the intersection between art\, politics\, and identity.\n\nHer main goal is to shed light on how Okinawan arts and cultures have been affected by internal political situations and the triple subjugation to the United States\, Japan\, and China. As part of her Okinawa project\, she is currently working toward a contemporary Okinawan art exhibition to be held in both Okinawa and England. She believes that this exhibition will challenge the so-called mainstream Japanese art history and bring attention to the unique and vital culture of Okinawa.\n \n Her publications include *East Asian Art History in a Transnational Context* (Routledge\, 2019) edited with Toshio Watanabe\; *Okinawan Art in its Regional Context: Historical Overview and Contemporary Practice: Sainsbury Institute Occasional Paper 2* (SISJAC\, 2022) edited with Megumi Machida\, Hiroko Ikegami\, and Toshio Watanabe\; and “Changes in the Japanese art market with the emergence of the middle-class collector: A study of Hishida Shunsō (1874–1911)” in *Journal of the History of Collections*\, among others. Currently\, she is writing the manuscript for her book\, with a working title of *Hishida Shunsō and the Emergence of Nihonga in a Transnational Context*.\n \n *This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at wugou@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:POSTPONED - CAS Film | Aurora's Sunrise - Ann Arbor Screening
DESCRIPTION:*These film screenings have been postponed to a still to-be-determined date later in October. Once we have received the new times from the State Theatre we will post them here. We apologize for the inconvenience.*\n\nThe Center for Armenian Studies is sponsoring the weeklong Michigan release of Aurora's Sunrise at State Theatre.\n\nShowtimes listed here will be updated as we receive the details. You may also check for updates at: https://myumi.ch/Jp2Gx\n\nDirector Inna Sahakyan will be in attendance for post-film Q&As on Friday\, September 29th at 3:00 & 7:00 PM.\n \nSynopsis: At only 14 years old\, Aurora lost everything during the horror of the Armenian genocide. Two years later\, through luck and extraordinary courage\, she escaped to New York\, where her story became a media sensation. Starring as herself in Auction of Souls\, an early Hollywood blockbuster\, Aurora became the face of one of the largest charity campaigns in American history. With a blend of vivid animation\, interviews with Aurora herself\, and 18 minutes of surviving footage from her lost silent epic\, Aurora's Sunrise revives a forgotten story of survival. Synopsis Aurora was a teenager when she lost her family to the first genocide of the twentieth century\, a nightmare that she herself barely survived. But when asked to not just remember but relive this experience all over again\, she said “yes”. In 1915\, as WWI raged on\, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time\, Aurora’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert\, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. But through multiple miraculous twists of fate\, Aurora was able to use her wits and courage to escape her captors\, and find her way to the shores of the United States. Young\, beautiful\, and with an extraordinary story to tell — the papers quickly found Aurora\, and within a year her story of survival was on every newsstand from coast to coast. It didn’t take long for Hollywood to take notice. With little regard for the toll it would take on the traumatised teenager\, they convinced Aurora that by bringing her story to the silver screen she would be able to help other survivors of the genocide. And so Aurora relived the unbearable\, and became the most improbable starlet of the silent era in Auction of Souls\, a runaway success\, breaking box office and fundraising campaign records. After the film’s release\, one out of every three American families reportedly contributed to the campaign to help the victims of the genocide. With the help of the film\, a campaign by the aid group Near East Relief raised $116 million and saved the lives of over 132\,000 orphaned survivors. The number of their descendants are in the millions. In the late 1920s\, expanding US-Turkish relations caused any mention of the Genocide to fade away. All copies of Auction of Souls were believed to be lost. Only in 1994\, several months after Aurora's death\, fragments of Auction of Souls were rediscovered. Utilizing a dynamic blend of different mediums\, including archival interviews with Aurora herself\, as well the restored surviving footage of Aurora’s silent-era blockbuster Aurora’s Sunrise brings Aurora’s incredible story to life for a new generation — the story of how one girl relived her life’s greatest pain to save her people.\n\n*\"Aurora's Sunrise\" was made possible by the academic contribution of the Zoryan Institute and is based on its Oral History Archive.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Insurgents and Intellectuals: Thought and Practice on the Left in US History
DESCRIPTION:Insurgents and Intellectuals: Thought and Practice on the Left in US History\n\nWhat is the historic relation of left-wing politics and modern intellectual life? How have today’s humanist disciplines in the academy been influenced by a scholarly generation radicalized as part of late-1960s insurgent movements (and by a secondary generation schooled by that one)?\n\nCirca 1950\, “the intellectuals” as a social phenomenon\, whether “critical” or conformist\, absorbed a great deal of attention—just as “intellectual history” stood as a prominent part of the historical discipline. Now\, hardly anyone will talk of “the intellectuals” as a group\, stratum\, or role-carriers of a distinct sort. Within the academy\, talk of “intellectuals” has devolved into a placid appreciation of “public intellectuals\,” or those whom administrators value for “engaged scholarship.” But what of the “radical left” in the sense suggested by Howard Brick and Christopher Phelps’s Radicals in America: The U.S. Left since the Second World War: a variegated\, concrete social current of dissent in the United States\, from the time of the Abolitionists (circa 1830) to the present\, identified with radical visions of new\, dramatically transformed social relations characterized by wide-ranging emancipation\, equality\, and democratic participation in collective self-government?\n\nThis conference asks for a new approach to an old question regarding intellectuals and politics: To what extent has there been an identifiable left-wing intellectual tradition within and/or without the more general mainstream sense of an “American intellectual tradition”? And insofar as we can locate such\, to what extent has it been historically significant—significant\, that is\, in terms beyond the high-cultural virtue of contributing to knowledge but in an effectual sense of helping to shape (as it is shaped by) human action generally\, its structures\, conflicts\, and development? And finally\, what can we say\, historically\, about the practical impact or efficacy of this radical left intellectual tradition/lineage over time or at particular moments?\n\n\nFull Program:\n1014 Tisch Hall\n\nThursday\, October 5\, 2023\n\n1 pm Opening Reception\n\n2-3:30 pm	Panel 1: A Heritage of Antiracist and Anticolonial Agitation\n \nJay Cook (University of Michigan): “Rethinking Ira Aldridge: Actor of Color\, Global Star\, Insurgent Intellectual\, and the Most Widely-Seen Abolitionist of the Nineteenth Century”\nMary Kelley (University of Michigan): “Journey in and through Women’s and Gender History”\nAnthony Mora (University of Michigan): “Mexican Heroes in U.S. Imaginations”\n\n4-5:30 pm	Keynote Address\nNelson Lichtenstein (UC-Santa Barbara): “What is a Labor Intellectual?”\n\nFriday\, October 6\, 2023\n\n10:30-12 pm	Panel 2: Prologue to the 20th-Century Left and the Emergence of Modern “Intellectuals” \n \nJulie Greene (University of Maryland): “The Wages of Empire: U.S. Workers Confront Global Capitalism”\nEileen Boris (UC-Santa Barbara): “Emma Goldman’s ‘The Traffic in Women’ Revisited: Sex Work\, Sweatshops\, and Discourses of Slavery”\nKevin Gaines (University of Virginia): “Du Bois\, the Black Left\, and Black Radicalism”\n\n1:30-3 pm	Panel 3: Radical Intellectuals over the Course of the “Old Left” \n \nCasey Blake (Columbia University): “Paul Goodman: Drawing the Line\, Again and Again”\nAlan Wald (University of Michigan): “Paradigm Dramas in U.S. Literary Radicalism”\nPenny Von Eschen (University of Virginia): “Before the New Left: Anticolonial Intellectuals and the Non-Aligned Imagination”\n\n3:30-5 pm	Panel 4: The New Left and Beyond: Whither the Radicals of ’68? \n \nAlice Echols (University of Southern California): “Paths to ‘68: ‘Organize Around Your Own Oppression’”\nChristian Davenport (University of Michigan): \"Mapping the DeMarketplace of Ideas: Introducing Ptolemy with Selected Applications Across Time\"\nDaniel Geary (Trinity College Dublin): “Radical Chic?: The Left-Liberal Revival of the 1960s and 1970s”\n \n5:15-6:30	Panel 5: Capital and Critique (Toward a Social-Intellectual History of the Radical Left) \n \nMargaret Somers (University of Michigan)\nGreg Parker (University of Michigan)\nGeoff Eley (University of Michigan)\nDavid Spreen (Harvard University)\nDan Borus (University of Rochester)\nJames Maffie (University of Maryland)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: “Hope for Higher Ion Velocities in Polymer Electrolytes”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nAbstract: The need for creating safe electrolytes for lithium batteries is significant given the continued safety problems associated with current lithium-ion batteries. Nonflammable polymer electrolytes\, mixtures of polymers and salt\, offer a possible solution\, but the rate of lithium ion transport is too low for practical applications. In this talk\, I will discuss some of the fundamental factors that limit ion transport in polymers. The performance of electrolytes depends on the current of the working ion under an applied electric potential. Since the current is proportional to the product of the concentration and ion velocity\, the velocity of the working ion is of paramount importance. We discuss approaches for predicting ion velocities based on Newman’s concentrated solution theory. The importance of the continuity equation in the presence of ionic current is discussed. We test our predictions on a standard polymer electrolyte based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). To obtain a mechanically robust solid electrolyte\, we use PEO-containing block copolymers wherein the other block is glassy (and rigid) polystyrene. Ion transport through these systems can also be described by concentrated solution theory. We conclude by describing our efforts to develop new polymers that exhibit higher ion velocities than PEO.\n\nBio: Nitash P. Balsara is a chemical engineer with a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur\, India in 1982. His graduate education began with a master's degree from Clarkson University. This was followed by PhD from RPI. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Creating Computing Education Beyond Engineering
DESCRIPTION:The term “computer science” was invented as something that should be taught to everyone in order to facilitate learning other subjects and to reduce the danger of having a powerful new technology controlled by only a few. Computing education has not become the democratizing force imagined in the 1960’s. Today\, computer science has a narrow definition and is mostly about getting a high-paying technology job. If we want to reach the original and more general goal\, we have to change how we teach computing and support alternative end-points for computing education. In this talk\, I review the history of “computer science” and its earlier purpose. I describe and demonstrate new kinds of languages\, approaches\, and courses that broaden accessibility to computing education.\n\nThis seminar is HYBRID (in-person and via Zoom). Refreshments will be provided if you join us in-person.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LANL XPS Seminar – Mark W. Schraad: High-Performance Computing and the Future of Big Science for Department of Energy Applications
DESCRIPTION:Los Alamos is the birthplace of computational physics and has been at the forefront of high-performance computing for nearly eight decades. Integrating physics theory and advanced numerical methods in the instantiation of multi-physics software has allowed Los Alamos to address a broad range of science and technology applications. Today\, as one of 17 Department of Energy National Laboratories\, Los Alamos continues to develop and deploy advanced software in the execution of a complex mission across national security\, energy security\, and environmental and climate science. As part of that endeavor\, the Computational Physics Division at Los Alamos develops and delivers a continuously evolving suite of production software products to design and analyze large-scale integrated physics experiments and to enable the design\, assessment\, and confident certification of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. These software products are deployed on leading-edge\, high-performance computing platforms\, such as the Trinity and Crossroads supercomputers at Los Alamos\, and the Sierra and El Capitan machines at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. With a shifting geopolitical landscape\, our software serves a national security mission of ever-increasing importance. Yet\, simultaneously\, the rapid pace of science and technology change places a premium on agility\, with a diversity of computing platforms and architectures coming online\, and with AI poised to revolutionize approaches to modern science. Ultimately\, an integration of artificial intelligence methodologies with the co-design of software and future computing architectures will allow new levels of physics fidelity\, numerical accuracy\, and efficiency in time to solution for the most challenging scientific workflows to address a broad spectrum of future\, big-science problems.\n\nBio: Mark W. Schraad earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and has nearly three decades of research and development experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He focused his research career on materials physics\, with specialization in structured materials and material instabilities\, while also gaining scientific leadership experience across theoretical and computational physics\, modeling and simulation\, and scientific software development for advanced computing architectures and hardware. Mark has balanced experience across Los Alamos Science\, Technology\, and Engineering and Weapons Directorates\, and across the Laboratory’s basic science and mission application portfolios. In his current position\, he serves as Division Leader for Computational Physics within the Weapons Physics Directorate at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In this role\, he is responsible for the development and delivery of LANL’s suite of mission-critical modeling and simulation software\, which is used in the design\, certification\, and assessment of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:899 Seminar Series: Jasper van der Waa
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nDr. Jasper van der Waa is a researcher at the Dutch applied research institute TNO on human-AI interaction and collaboration. He heads the Hybrid Intelligence lab on augmenting human capabilities through AI support systems in health care. He leads TNO's research programs on Explainable AI and AI Safety for high-risk applications of AI in health care\, the military\, and autonomous vehicles. He advises various ministries and companies on how to design and develop AI applications in responsible and human-centric ways. Lastly\, he is involved as a senior researcher in various EU Horizon programs focusing on the development of support systems for the maritime domain. During his visit at U-M\, he explores possible collaborations between U-M and TNO on the above topics.\n\nAbstract \n\nThe collaboration between humans and AI can augment both human and AI capabilities while ensuring the responsible and safe use of AI in safety-critical applications. The design of a successful collaboration requires the combined understanding of human factors and technology embedded in the application context. This talk will present an overview of the work at TNO on human-AI collaboration from this perspective\, touching on a wide range of topics such as meaningful control\, co-learning\, design methodologies\, and task allocation. Especially the role of explanations for human-AI collaboration will be discussed. An argument is made on how the field of Explainable AI should broaden its goal from increasing trust to letting explanations serve as the basis of collaboration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED - Imaging brain dynamics with light: New technologies and studies of large-scale cortical coding
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Mark J. Schnitzer\, Ph.D.\, Biology and Applied Physics Professor\, Howard Hughes Medical Institute\, Stanford University.\n\nOptical techniques have become central to research at the forefront of brain science and are rapidly increasing in their breadth and importance. I will present recent advances in optical brain imaging\, which have allowed the visualization of large-scale neural coding in behaving animals and optical readouts of neuronal voltage oscillations. Neuroscientists use these innovations to study information processing in healthy and diseased brain states. As an in-depth example\, I will describe imaging experiments that address questions first raised by John von Neumann about how the brain can compute so accurately even though individual neurons appear to be extremely noisy. By using custom optical mesoscopes to image neuronal dynamics across the mouse visual cortex\, we found that neocortex supports reliable sensory performance through brief elevations in sensory coding redundancy near the start of perception\, neural population codes that are robust to cellular variability\, and widespread inter-area fluctuation modes that transmit sensory data and task responses in non-interfering channels. These measurements reveal mesoscale dynamics of cortical visual processing and provide constraints for the design of future brain-machine interfaces. \n\nMore broadly\, an upcoming generation of optical instruments is poised to lay the basis for rich interactions between experimental neuroscience\, machine learning\, and human health.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Hubbell Seminar - From fossil to genome: Integrative phylogenetic approaches uncover the evolutionary history of predaceous ground and water beetles
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our afternoon Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nPREVIEW: Relationships among the predaceous ground and water beetles\, the suborder Adephaga\, have long remained unresolved. However\, recent efforts incorporating data from transcriptomes\, ultraconserved elements (UCEs)\, and genomes have provided highly resolved and strongly supported trees\, revealing their evolutionary relationships. Among these beetles\, the family Gyrinidae – whirligig beetles\, has proven critical for understanding the morphology and timing of the evolution of the entire beetle suborder. By incorporating fossils in a total evidence framework and deploying tailored UCE probe sets on a variety of data types generated by high throughput sequencing techniques for phylogenomic inference\, the deep and shallow diversification events within predaceous ground and water beetles are becoming clearer.\n\nSPEAKER WEBSITE: http://www.gustafsonlab.org/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: Quadratic isoperimetric inequality for mapping tori of hyperbolic groups
DESCRIPTION:Dehn functions have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. It is an optimal function that bounds the area of a word\, representing identity\, in terms of the defining relators within a finitely presented group. It is conjectured that the mapping torus of a hyperbolic group exhibits a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. In this talk\, I will discuss a recent development: it is confirmed for one-ended torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Asian Languages and Cultures 2023-2024 Colloquium Series
DESCRIPTION:Rodents\, including rats and mice\, assumed unprecedented roles in medical research and practice during the three decades before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. With their lives and deaths\, these tiny animals contributed to a rodent revolution in Chinese medicine by producing therapeutic compounds\, as well as insights about the relationships among pathogens\, drugs\, and people. A multispecies perspective on the development of the life sciences helps to dissolve the artificial boundaries of nation and species in which we conventionally frame history.\n The welfare of people and lab rodents in China were inextricably connected both to each other and to humans and other animals around the world. Drawing from scientific reports\, military records\, and oral histories\, this paper shows first how people bred and raised animals to produce biological medicines including vaccines and blood sera. Taking malaria as a case study\, the paper also shows how researchers in the Vietnam War-era Project 523 used animals to develop and test drugs\, connecting the insights of Traditional Chinese Medicine to those of biomedicine.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exploring the Biosynthesis of Unusual Sugar-derived Natural Products
DESCRIPTION:Many natural products derive their biological activities from their sugar components. Changing the structures of these sugar moieties can profoundly impact the biological properties of the fully assembled compounds. Realizing the potential of this chemistry requires both an understanding of the biosynthetic pathway of each sugar and a detailed mechanistic knowledge of the key enzymes. We and others have thus been devoted to unravelling the biochemical principles underlying the assembly of glycosylated natural products wherein a core set of enzyme activities mix and match to synthesize structurally diverse secondary metabolites. This work has laid the foundation for our more recent studies of the biosynthesis of sugar-derived natural products and revealed several cases involving unique and interesting chemistry. For example\, the key transformation converting cytosylglucuronic acid (CGA) to cytosyl-4'-keto-3'-deoxy-D-glucuronic acid during the biosynthesis of blasticidins is a radical initiated 1\,2-diol dehydration catalyzed by the radical SAM enzyme BlsE. Likewise\, C-glycosylation appears to be required for the introduction of a C–C bond between pyranose and furanose bearing precursors during the biosynthesis of herbicidin thereby generating its tricyclic structure. However\, the herbicidin biosynthetic gene cluster does not contain a typical glycosyltransferase. Instead\, it was found that the C–C coupling reaction proceeds in two-stages resulting in net C5'-glycosylation between ATP and UDP-glucuronic acid catalyzed by two NAD-dependent enzymes. The biosynthetic roles of selected enzymes in these two systems\, their mechanisms of catalysis\, and the insights they can offer for understanding natural product biosynthesis and radical SAM enzymology will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Firm reactions to extreme weather and implications for climate change policy
DESCRIPTION:Climate change and extreme weather events are a global problem\, but especially affect poor countries\, including firms in these countries. We know that weather shocks affect these firms through both a demand and supply channel. Depending on which channel dominates\, short-run firm adjustments to the shocks differ\, and understanding these adjustments can help in designing better policy to reduce the impact of climate change on poor countries. I combine firm-level World Bank data with high-resolution weather data to show that weather shocks are primarily supply shocks\, affecting non-agricultural firms across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia by reducing their productivity. I further show that firms react to these shocks by scaling back their expenditures on productive capability\, hiring less machinery\, less space and fewer non-production workers. These adjustments further reduce firm productivity. I develop a simple international trade model featuring hired productive capability that rationalizes my reduced form findings. Combining the model with machine learning estimates of the impact of climate change\, I highlight the importance of productivity adjustments for policy design: Productivity responses make trade cost reductions 1.7 times more effective at countering welfare losses from climate change.\n\n\nThis talk is presented by the Economic Development Seminar\, sponsored in part by the Department of Economics through a generous gift given by Jay and Beth Rakow.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThere are profound deficits in how humans\, and adults in particular\, heal and recover from tissue damage. The alternative to productive tissue healing is the formation of dysfunctional scaring\, which underlies chronic degenerative arthritic conditions\, chronic autoimmune diseases and the fibrosis associated with the foreign body response to implants. Our clinical translation experiences in orthopedics and plastic surgery yielded the unexpected discovery of adaptive immune cells in the biomaterial response. Distinct pathways of adaptive immunity\, T cells together with linked activity of innate lymphocytes\, regulate productive versus destructive tissue responses and should therefore be the primary targets of regenerative medicine. Recent data further implicate cellular senescence as a major therapeutically targetable player in local tissue-destructive immune responses and fibrosis. Understanding and subsequent manipulation of the local tissue microenvironment with regenerative immunotherapies and biomaterials is a mechanism by which the effector class and T cell function and senescence can be engaged. We are now working to understand the role of the immune system and cellular senescence in the biomaterial response and repair across different tissues across lifespan.\nBio:\nDr. Elisseeff is the Morton Goldberg Professor and Founder of the Translational Tissue Engineering Center at Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Wilmer Eye Institute and is Interim Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering\, the National Academy of Inventors\, a Young Global Leader by World Economic Forum. In 2018\, she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Medicine and in 2019 she received the NIH Directors Pioneer Award. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Sidik Fofana
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): http://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters23\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA's Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nSidik Fofana is a graduate of NYU’s MFA program and a public school teacher in Brooklyn. His work has appeared in the *Sewanee Review* and *Granta*. He was also named a fellow at the Center for Fiction in 2018. His debut short story collection was published by Scribner in August 2022.\n\nSet in a Harlem high rise\, *Stories from the Tenants Downstairs* is a stunning debut about a tight-knit cast of characters grappling with their own personal challenges while the forces of gentrification threaten to upend life as they know it.\n\nLike Gloria Naylor’s *The Women of Brewster Place* and Lin Manuel Miranda’s *In the Heights*\, Sidik Fofana’s electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths\, struggles\, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience.\n\nEach short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes\, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyone’s mind. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:UM Astronomy Thinking Big: From the Detroit Observatory to the 39 Meter ELT
DESCRIPTION:Science@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Michael Meyer to share the story of how Michigan got involved with the biggest optical telescope in the world.\n\nUM’s first president Henry Tappan realized the value of research infrastructure\,\n\ncommissioning one of the largest telescopes of its time for Detroit Observatory.\n\nThat tradition has continued to inspire discoveries through the decades using\n\nthe MDM Observatories in Arizona\, and the Magellan Observatory in Chile. Now UM\n\nhas joined four instrument consortia to build a suite of instruments for the 39 meter\n\nELT which will be the largest telescope of its kind when completed late this decade.\n\nThe ELT will have over x30 the light gathering power of NASA’s JWST and over\n\nx15 the fineness of detail of the Hubble Space Telescope. UM astronomers\n\nwill participate in the exciting discoveries it will enable from observations\n\nof the first stars and galaxies formed early in the Universe to discovery\n\nand characterization of planets like Earth around the very nearest stars\n\nto the Sun.\n\nProf. Michael Meyer has more than 25 years of international scientific research experience\, in the fields of galactic and infrared astronomy\, as well as the formation\, evolution\, and characterization of planetary systems (and associated implications on the prospects for life in the Universe). He has experience participating in the development of ground- and space-based instrumentation\, including both the NIRCam and NIRISS instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope as well as high contrast imaging systems/spectrographs for 6-10 meter telescopes and next generation extremely large telescopes.\n\nTalk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available\, weather permitting.

SUMMARY:Performance:John Raymond & S. Carey \"Shadowlands\"
DESCRIPTION:A deep and unique collaboration\n\nJohn Raymond and S. Carey have been playing music together for close to twenty years since their time studying music at the University of –Eau Claire. While they both received training in jazz and classical music\, their careers would soon head in very different directions. S. Carey would become the right-hand man to Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver)\; collaborate as a multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer with the likes of Sufjan Stevens\, Low\, and Bruce Hornsby among others\; and release four albums of his own to critical acclaim from Pitchfork\, NPR\, and more. John Raymond\, on the other hand\, would become a Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer “steering jazz in the right direction” (Downbeat)\; release eight albums garnering praise from the New York Times\, Stereogum\, and others\; and teach on faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University\, one of the most prestigious music conservatories in the world.\n\nIn 2019\, the two reunited and began experimenting on what their artistic voices would sound like together. Raymond brought in a host of musical ideas\, while Carey contributed lyrics and helped shape the ideas into songs. Producer Sun Chung (formerly with ECM Records) came on board shortly after\, and together they enlisted a cast of A-list musicians to help flesh out the music including pianist Aaron Parks (Terri Lyne Carrington\, Terence Blanchard)\, bassist Chris Morrissey (Norah Jones\, Mark Guiliana)\, and guitarist Dave Devine (Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band).\nThe result is their new album\, “Shadowlands” (out September 29)\, a stunning\, genre-bending collection of songs that combines the warmth and beauty of Carey’s aesthetic with the improvisational\, spontaneous nature of Raymond’s. The music ranges from intimate and meditative to soaring and anthemic\, with electric moments of musical interplay throughout. It’s the kind of collaboration that feels as if it were years in the making.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4231/4232 for more detail.
