SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT seminar: Moment matrix and C-Toda lattice hierarchy
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we focus on the reduction of the 2-dimensional Toda hierarchy. Based on the Gauss-Borel decomposition of the moment matrix and appropriate time evolution\, we construct the corresponding Lax representation. Symmetric moment matrices are considered that lead to the differential relations between symmetric tau functions and 2d-Toda’s tau function. Motivated by the Cauchy two-matrix model\, we study the rank one shift condition in the symmetric case\, from which the C-Toda lattice hierarchy is found with the special Lax matrices and intergrable structure.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CMENAS Fall 2023 Colloquium Series Lecture. Kicking Goals and Reshaping Realities: Sport and Politics in the Arab Gulf States
DESCRIPTION:The intersection of sports and politics is an age-old phenomenon\, and it continues to be a prominent theme in contemporary society. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in the continually evolving context of the Arab Gulf States. The nexus between sport and politics has proven to be a dynamic force capable of generating significant political\, sociological\, and economic outcomes. The hosting of the 'successful' Qatar World Cup 2022 stands as a prime example of how a sporting event can transcend the boundaries of the pitch and reshape the realities of a region. This talk delves into the intricate relationship between sport and politics in the Arab Gulf States\, analyzing the multifaceted consequences of the Qatar World Cup on political dynamics\, sociocultural norms\, and economic landscapes.\n\nSalma Thani\, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the American University of Sharjah\, is a Gulf Studies specialist. Her interdisciplinary approach covers a wide spectrum of research interests\, including the history and contemporary socio-political dynamics of the Gulf States. Dr. Thani's work delves into the region's evolving global roles in politics and diplomacy. Her research extends to exploring how culture\, history\, politics\, and foreign influences have shaped its socio-economic development\, with a specific focus on the UAE. She has published widely in the fields of soft power\, national identity\, national branding\, development\, sport\, tourism\, and aviation in the United Arab Emirates.\n \nThis event is part of the CMENAS Fall Colloquium 2023: “The MENA world after a MENA World Cup” 555 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor.\n \nColloquium questions: cmenas@umich.edu\n \nThis series is funded in part by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS) U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) grant.\n \nTo register\, go to https://myumi.ch/8eA8n.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Capitalizing Edirne
DESCRIPTION:How does a city become a capital? Why one particular city\, in a certain period\, and at a specific pace? Specifically: How did the Ottoman city of Edirne (Byzantine Adrianople) become the capital of the Ottoman enterprise during the first half of the fifteenth century? What was an Ottoman capital in this era? This lecture explores the process that made Edirne into an Ottoman capital\, comparing that process to the earlier development of Bursa as the Ottoman capital. The combined experiences of these two cities in the first 150 years of Ottoman history laid the groundwork for the reconfiguring of Byzantine Constantinople into Ottoman Konstantiniyye (Istanbul) after its conquest in 1453. Although many and varied sources documented what transpired in Istanbul\, we trace Edirne’s development through a much slimmer agglomeration of evidence. The physical evidence of an Ottoman presence\, together with occasional references in Ottoman chronicles and documents\, and foreign accounts\, reveal how Sultans Mehmed I (1413-21) and Murad II (1421-51) took deliberate steps to consolidate Edirne’s shifting status. The same evidence points to the evolving self-perception of the Ottomans in their world. With this framework in place\, however\, the greater challenge remaining in this study is to discover the human activities that animated these processes.\n\nDr. Amy Singer is Hassenfeld Chair in Islamic Studies and Professor in the Department of History at Brandeis University. Professor emerita in the Department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University. \n\nThis event is made possible by the Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh endowment in Islamic Studies

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Eyes on the Sky: How 5\,000 Robots are Unraveling the Mystery of Dark Energy
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is currently constructing the largest 3D map of the universe to date. By the end of its 5 year survey\, DESI will have collected spectra of 40 million extra-galactic objects which will be used to measure the effect of dark energy on the expansion of the universe. To do this DESI is utilizing 5\,000 robots to precisely align fibers about as thick as a human hair to collect the light that has travelled billions of years from distant galaxies. In this talk I will discuss how some of these robots seem to have a mind of their own\, and also show some preliminary results using data from DESI’s 5\,000 eyes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe (Ayşe K. Üskül)
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Üskül will present recent findings pointing to a distinct emphasis on several forms of independence (relative intensity of disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions\, happiness based on disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions\, dispositional [vs. situational] attribution style\, self-construal as different from others\, self-directed\, self-reliant\, self-expressive\, and consistent) and interdependence (closeness to in-group [vs. out-group] members\, self-construal as connected and committed to close others) in the Mediterranean region compared to more commonly studied East Asian and Anglo-Western cultural groups. She discusses this unique pattern in light of the importance of “honor” values in Mediterranean societies\, which require individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation\, through assertiveness\, competitiveness\, and retaliation in the face of threats. These findings extend previous insights into patterns of cultural orientation beyond commonly examined East–West comparisons to an understudied world region. In addition\, she will share a within-region analysis of self-construal social orientation\, and cognitive style to examine the role of ethnic\, linguistic\, national\, religious and socio-ecological factors in similarities and differences between subregional groups. \n\nÜskül is a social and cultural psychologist interested in the role of cultural and socio-ecological context in self-related\, interpersonal and social cognitive processes. She completed her degrees at Bogazici University in Istanbul\, Turkey (BA)\, Vrije Universiteit\, Amsterdam\, the Netherlands (MA)\, and York University\, Toronto\, Canada (PhD) and held a SSHRC-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor between 2004-06. She held academic positions at the University of Essex\, Queen’s University Belfast\, and University of Kent before joining the University of Sussex in 2022. Her past research on socio-economic basis of interdependence\, cultural conceptions of honor\, and culture and health behavior change received funding from the British Academy\, the US National Science Foundation\, the Economic and Social Research Council\, the Leverhulme Trust\, and Japanese Society of the Promotion of Science\, among others. Her current comparative research on the role of honor in social interactional processes is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (www.honorlogic.org). She is Co-Chief Editor of the European Review of Social Psychology and the President of the Psychology Section of the British Science Association.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alison Narayan Promotion Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Biocatalysis tools & strategies to enable complex molecule synthesis\n\nAbstract: In Nature’s approach to building molecules\, hundreds of different enzymes carry out their individual chemical reactions simultaneously in a single cell. The laboratory approach to chemical synthesis is very different. Modern medicines\, dyes\, fragrances\, and biological probe compounds are prepared with combinations of small molecule reagents and catalysts that are significantly less effective than Nature at achieving multistep synthetic cascades. The work described leverages the power of Nature’s tools for building complex molecules to synthesize libraries of natural and unnatural products. Enzymes with potential synthetic utility are used as a starting point for engineering biocatalysts with (1) broad substrate scope\, (2) high catalytic efficiency\, and (3) exquisite substrate\, site-\, and stereoselectivity. These biocatalytic methods are employed to efficiently synthesize biologically active complex molecules in a high throughput format.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RNA Innovation Seminar: Guizhi (Julian) Zhu
DESCRIPTION:HYBRID SEMINAR:\nIn-person: BSRB\, ABC seminar rooms\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ji8QP-xWQTKxzLojBHjRKg\n\nAbstract: Our ultimate research goal is to develop clinically translatable nucleic acid therapeutics and vaccines\, along with their delivery systems. In this talk\, we will mainly discuss small circular mRNA (circRNA) vaccines for cancer immunotherapy and the prevention of infectious diseases. Modification-free small circRNA vaccines are highly stable and sequence-defined with unique innate immunomodulatory mechanisms and sustained production of concatemeric antigens\, resulting in robust and long-lasting adaptive immunity. Relative to several state-of-the-art modified mRNAs\, nanocarrier-delivered circRNA vaccines elicited up to 10-fold antigen-specific T cells in mice\, with superior T cell memory and vaccine safety. circRNA vaccines are widely applicable for tumor and viral (neo)antigens to elicit potent and long-lasting CD8+/CD4+ T cell responses in young or immunosenescent aged mice. Combining circRNA vaccines with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) reduced tumor immunosuppression and eradicated multiple types of murine tumors\, including ICB-resistant BrafV600E melanoma. Moreover\, pulmonary delivery of influenza circRNA vaccines protected mice from influenza challenge. Overall\, small circRNA vaccines are promising for versatile applications. Lastly\, we will also briefly discuss our research in cGAS-STING- and ADAR1- related nucleic acid therapeutics and drug delivery systems for cancer and autoimmune diseases.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Snake graphs and continued fractions
DESCRIPTION:Snake graphs are planar graphs that are obtained by iteratively stacking square boxes to the top or the right of the previous square box. They are naturally bipartite graphs\, so it is natural to ask how to count its perfect matchings. In this talk\, I will present a way to encode the snake graphs\, and reveal a surprising connection of the perfect matchings of snake graphs to continued fractions. This result is due to Canakci and Rchiffler. If time permits\, I will also discuss some open problems I am interested in\, connected to areas like ergodic theory and limits of graphs\, to collect ideas from the audience.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Some vanishing results for rational completed cohomology of Shimura varieties
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Let p be a prime number. Emerton introduced the p-adically completed cohomology\, which admits a representation of some p-adic group and can be thought of as some spaces of p-adic automorphic forms. In this talk\, I want to explain that for Shimura varieties\, sufficiently regular infinitesimal characters of the p-adic group can only show up in the middle degree of the completed cohomology. The proof is based on a very recent result of Bhatt on Kodaira vanishing in mixed characteristic and an old idea of using translation functors. This is joint work in progress with Kai-Wen Lan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: On the Natural Nullcone of the Symplectic Group
DESCRIPTION:Consider a group acting on a polynomial ring S over a field K by degree-preserving K-algebra automorphisms. The invariant ring R is a graded subring of S\; let m_R denote the homogeneous maximal ideal of R. Several key properties of the invariant ring and its embedding in S can be deduced by studying the nullcone S/(m_R)S of the group action. This includes\, for example\, the finite generation of the invariant ring and the purity of the embedding. In this article\, we study the nullcones arising from the natural actions of the symplectic and general linear groups. \n\nFor the natural representation of the symplectic group (via copies of the standard representation)\, the invariant ring is the ring defined by the principal Pfaffians of a fixed even size of a generic alternating matrix. We show that the nullcone of this embedding is a strongly F-regular ring in positive characteristic\, and hence in characteristic zero\, a ring of strongly F-regular type. Independent of characteristic\, we give a complete description of the divisor class group of the nullcone and determine precisely when it is Gorenstein.

SUMMARY:Performance:Low Cut Connie
DESCRIPTION:High-powered songwriter rock from Philadelphia\n\nBased in Philadelphia\, Low Cut Connie is a rock and roll band that also serves as the alter ego for the songwriting and the amazing stage presence of frontman Adam Weiner.
