In 2022, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.\u2019s Hammer Museum Biennial, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\r\n\r\nTolliver refers to her process as \u201ccreative recycling\u201d: forging found and thrifted materials, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils, adornments, wires, and loose ends express the artist\u2019s feelings, perspectives, and everyday way of living.\r\n\r\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate, imaginative references to Tolliver\u2019s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size, larger-than-life, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art, where plants, statuary, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space, freedom of expression, and dreams of independence. Tolliver\u2019s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\r\n\r\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio, one expects the figures will spring to life, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding, furniture, and drawers inspired by Tolliver\u2019s own domestic space, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit, with the opportunity to sit among the artist\u2019s creations.\r\n\r\nTolliver\u2019s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences, esthetics, and materials: prefab, handmade, urban, nostalgic, opulent, functional, garish, and celestial. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. These ceramics act as lifeboats, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova\u2019s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline, red thread connects these projects, weaving through clay and fabric, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on \u201cArts and Resistance.\u201d\r\n\r\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist, a native of Ukraine, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. As she assembled these objects, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering, breaking, sawing, splicing, painting, gluing, layering, and reassembling these toys became, for her, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Why one particular city, in a certain period, and at a specific pace? Specifically: How did the Ottoman city of Edirne (Byzantine Adrianople) become the capital of the Ottoman enterprise during the first half of the fifteenth century? What was an Ottoman capital in this era? This lecture explores the process that made Edirne into an Ottoman capital, comparing that process to the earlier development of Bursa as the Ottoman capital. The combined experiences of these two cities in the first 150 years of Ottoman history laid the groundwork for the reconfiguring of Byzantine Constantinople into Ottoman Konstantiniyye (Istanbul) after its conquest in 1453. Although many and varied sources documented what transpired in Istanbul, we trace Edirne\u2019s development through a much slimmer agglomeration of evidence. The physical evidence of an Ottoman presence, together with occasional references in Ottoman chronicles and documents, and foreign accounts, reveal how Sultans Mehmed I (1413-21) and Murad II (1421-51) took deliberate steps to consolidate Edirne\u2019s shifting status. The same evidence points to the evolving self-perception of the Ottomans in their world. With this framework in place, however, the greater challenge remaining in this study is to discover the human activities that animated these processes.\r\n\r\nDr. Amy Singer is Hassenfeld Chair in Islamic Studies and Professor in the Department of History at Brandeis University. She discusses this unique pattern in light of the importance of \u201chonor\u201d values in Mediterranean societies, which require individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation, through assertiveness, competitiveness, and retaliation in the face of threats. These findings extend previous insights into patterns of cultural orientation beyond commonly examined East\u2013West comparisons to an understudied world region. In addition, she will share a within-region analysis of self-construal social orientation, and cognitive style to examine the role of ethnic, linguistic, national, religious and socio-ecological factors in similarities and differences between subregional groups. \r\n\r\n\u00dcsk\u00fcl is a social and cultural psychologist interested in the role of cultural and socio-ecological context in self-related, interpersonal and social cognitive processes. She completed her degrees at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey (BA), Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (MA), and York University, Toronto, Canada (PhD) and held a SSHRC-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor between 2004-06. She held academic positions at the University of Essex, Queen\u2019s University Belfast, and University of Kent before joining the University of Sussex in 2022. Her past research on socio-economic basis of interdependence, cultural conceptions of honor, and culture and health behavior change received funding from the British Academy, the US National Science Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, and Japanese Society of the Promotion of Science, among others. Her current comparative research on the role of honor in social interactional processes is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (www.honorlogic.org). In this talk, we will mainly discuss small circular mRNA (circRNA) vaccines for cancer immunotherapy and the prevention of infectious diseases. Modification-free small circRNA vaccines are highly stable and sequence-defined with unique innate immunomodulatory mechanisms and sustained production of concatemeric antigens, resulting in robust and long-lasting adaptive immunity. Relative to several state-of-the-art modified mRNAs, nanocarrier-delivered circRNA vaccines elicited up to 10-fold antigen-specific T cells in mice, with superior T cell memory and vaccine safety. circRNA vaccines are widely applicable for tumor and viral (neo)antigens to elicit potent and long-lasting CD8+\/CD4+ T cell responses in young or immunosenescent aged mice. Combining circRNA vaccines with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) reduced tumor immunosuppression and eradicated multiple types of murine tumors, including ICB-resistant BrafV600E melanoma. Moreover, pulmonary delivery of influenza circRNA vaccines protected mice from influenza challenge. Overall, small circRNA vaccines are promising for versatile applications.
