SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Sentimental Archive: Remembering Nubia through Salvage Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases select photographs from The American University in Cairo’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library taken by the renowned Egyptian photographer Abd al-Fattah Eid as well as by the Cairo-born Swiss artist Margo Veillon.\n\nIn 1964\, the construction of the Aswan High Dam displaced Nubians from their ancestral villages along the banks of the Nile in Egypt. In the years immediately preceding the dam’s construction\, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \n\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or “Old Nubia” the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years\, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond\, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive\, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time\, space\, and circumstance. \n\nThis selection of photographs includes persons\, places\, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline\, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\n\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll\, assistant professor of anthropology\, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid\, doctoral student in anthropology\, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\n\nFor a deeper dive\, visit the companion exhibit\, Narrating Nubia\, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. It delves into the archaeological\, anthropological\, and community narratives of both ancient and modern-day Nubia spanning Egypt and Sudan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Polynomial functors\, Vec-varieties\, and singular locus
DESCRIPTION:The singular locus of the variety of matrices with rank at most r is the variety of matrices with rank at most (r-1). This fact is independent of the size of the matrices provided it is strictly bigger than r.\n\nA natural environment for varieties stable under the action of the general linear group and defined uniformly with respect to the dimension is the setting of polynomial functors\, where we name these Vec-varieties.\n\nIn this setting\, the phenomenon above happens to be more than a coincidence. Indeed\, in a joint work with Christopher H. Chiu and Jan Draisma\, we proved that each Vec-variety admits a unique Vec-subvariety coinciding with the singular locus when the dimension is big enough.\n\nThe aim of this talk is to provide the necessary background\, and a proof of the result.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Counselors\, Cops\, and the Political Economy of Public Safety in K-12 Schools
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on five years of ethnographic fieldwork and archival research in Syracuse\, New York\, Beardall introduces the concept of \"the policing contract.\" She reframes police as public employees and city residents as their municipal employers – and examines how this underexplored relationship shapes police presence in K-12 schools. This research builds a critical labor dimension into the school safety literature and broadens our understanding of schools as carceral spaces. \n\nJoin us for this event on October 11. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - New data\, new questions\, old problems? Online behavioral data in social science research
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nOctober 11\, 2023\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research\, and via Zoom. The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nNew data\, new questions\, old problems? Online behavioral data in social science research\n\nRecords of individuals’ online activities obtained from devices like personal computers and smartphones have received a lot of interest in the social sciences in recent years. Many have praised such data for allowing fine-grained observations of individuals’ online activities which would be impossible with more traditional data sources such as surveys. Recent work\, however\, warns that many data quality aspects of these novel data are so far poorly under- stood. As the number of observations can quickly reach several millions\, researchers seem tempted to treat online behavioral data as gold standard\, ignore what their data may be missing\, and which other systematic biases may be present. In this talk\, I present both applied and methodological work using online behavioral data in a typical social science setting. First\, using within-between random effects models\, I show how online behavioral data combined with a panel survey allows us to understand the effects of news media consumption from populist alternative news platforms on individuals’ political attitudes. Second\, I show that online behavioral data\, although containing detailed records of individuals’ social media use\, are far from being complete. Using hidden Markov models\, combined online behavioral data\, survey records\, and donated social media data\, I show that the online behavioral data seem to completely fail in capturing social media use for about one third of the sample. I emphasize the need for researchers to navigate the complexities of online behavioral data\, highlighting potentials and limitations.\n\nRuben Bach is a Research Fellow at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research\, University of Mannheim\, Germany. His research is concerned with data quality in social science data products and applied computational social science (media consumption\, political attitudes\, socially responsible AI). In the fall of 2023\, he is a visitor with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science\, University of Waterloo\, Ontario.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: Thinking Spatially About Countable Models
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will explore the natural topology inherent in the collection of countable structures in a fixed signature. We will describe the Borel structure derived from this topology\, which holds a close connection to the infinitary logic Lω1ω through the Lopez-Escobar theorem. Additionally\, isomorphism of structures can be understood algebraically\, viewing it as an action of the permutation group S∞. We will discuss how maps preserving this algebraic structure correspond to methods of translating between theories in different signatures.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | The Beyond-Halo Mass Effects of the Cosmic Web Environment on Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:Galaxy properties primarily depend on their host halo mass. Halo mass\, in turn\, depends on the cosmic web environment. We explore if the effect of the cosmic web on galaxy properties is entirely transitive via host halo mass\, or if the cosmic web has an effect independent of mass. The secondary galaxy bias\, sometimes referred to as “galaxy assembly bias”\, is the beyond-mass component of the galaxy-halo connection. We investigate the link between the cosmic web environment and the secondary galaxy bias in simulations. First\, we examine the extent to which the secondary galaxy bias can be accounted for with a measure of the environment as a secondary halo property. We find that the total secondary galaxy bias preferentially places galaxies in more strongly clustered haloes. In particular\, haloes at fixed mass tend to host more galaxies when they are more strongly associated with nodes or filaments. This tendency accounts for a significant portion\, but not the entirety\, of the total secondary galaxy bias effect. Second\, we quantify how the secondary galaxy bias behaves differently depending on the host halo proximity to nodes and filaments. We find that the total secondary galaxy bias is relatively stronger in haloes more associated with nodes or filaments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Adjoints and Canonical Forms of Polytopes
DESCRIPTION:Projectivizations of pointed polyhedral cones $C$ are positive geometries with canonical forms that look like $\Omega_C(x) = \frac{A(x)}{B(x)}dx$ with $A\, B$ polynomials. We are going to see that the numerator $A(x)$ is given by the adjoint polynomial of the dual cone $C^\vee$\, which cancels unwanted poles outside the polytope.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCAIM Series on Algorithm Startups
DESCRIPTION:Many do not realize the potential of mathematical and algorithmic ideas to have a societal impact through the commercial space. Mathematicians often receive advice tailored for other areas\, such as building physical objects\, consulting\, or general software development\, that may not apply. Additionally\, startups with sophisticated mathematical\, statistical\, or engineering algorithms may encounter unique problems. In this new colloquium series\, startup CEOs will discuss the story of their companies from seed to IPO stages and offer advice on building successful businesses based on mathematics or algorithms. \n\nDr. Schadt is an expert on the generation and integration of very large-scale sequence variation\, molecular profiling and clinical data in disease populations for constructing molecular networks that define disease states and link molecular biology to physiology. Dr. Schadt was founder and CEO of Sema4\, a predictive health company creating tools to better diagnose\, treat\, and prevent disease. Prior to joining Mount Sinai in 2011\, he was Chief Scientific Officer at Pacific Biosciences. Previously\, Dr. Schadt was Executive Scientific Director of Genetics at Rosetta Inpharmatics\, a subsidiary of Merck & Co.\, and before Rosetta\, Dr. Schadt was a Senior Research Scientist at Roche Bioscience. He received his B.A. in applied mathematics and computer science from California Polytechnic State University\, his M.A. in pure mathematics from University of California\, Davis\, and his Ph.D. in bio-mathematics from University of California\, Los Angeles (requiring Ph.D. candidacy in molecular biology and mathematics).\n\nReception with refreshments to follow talk. \n\nEvent will be in-person and on Zoom: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290\n\nCo-sponsored by: Michigan Center for Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics (MCAIM)\, the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB)\, Michigan Innovation Partnerships\, and the Van Loo Symposium.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Safeguarding Principles: Interrogating Free Speech in Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Discourse
DESCRIPTION:In our highly politically polarized environment\, free speech and DEI are often discussed as two separate and even opposed concepts\, with DEI initiatives coming at the cost of free speech. However\, a deeper and better informed understanding of the concepts of free speech and DEI reveals how these principles are deeply interdependent. In this conversation\, panelists will explore the misconception that DEI infringes upon free speech or enforces conformity. Further\, panelists will discuss how DEI enhances the ideals of free speech by fostering inclusion and bringing more diverse perspectives to the forefront.\n\nSpeakers:\n-Jack Bernard\, Associate General Counsel at the University of Michigan\n-Kaleb Briscoe\, Assistant Professor of Adult and Higher Education at the University of Oklahoma\n-Elizabeth R. Cole\, Professor of Psychology\, Women's and Gender Studies\, and Afroamerican and African Studies\, and Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan\n-Nina M. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar: Invariant Theory of Commutative Rings
DESCRIPTION:Given a group G acting on a ring R\, we consider the subring R^G\, the subring of elements fixed by G. It's a natural question to ask what \"good\" properties of R are inherited by R^G. Some of these questions were considered by Hilbert and Noether\, and were a motivation to study noetherian rings. We will discuss some of these results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Vanishing theorems and the minimal model program with scaling for projective morphisms of excellent schemes\, algebraic spaces\, and analytic spaces
DESCRIPTION:In 1953\, Kodaira proved what is now called the Kodaira vanishing theorem\, which states that if L is an ample divisor on a complex projective manifold X\, then \nH^i(X\,-L) = 0 for all i < dim(X). Since then\, Kodaira's theorem and its generalizations for complex projective varieties – in particular\, the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem and its relative version due to Kawamata–Matsuda–Matsuki – have become indispensable tools in algebraic geometry over fields of characteristic zero\, particularly in birational geometry and the minimal model program. However\, while the goal in birational geometry is to study birational equivalences between projective varieties\, recent progress in the minimal model program has shown that it would be very useful to have a version of the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem that holds for schemes and other geometric objects that are not necessarily projective varieties. In this talk\, I will discuss my version of the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem for projective morphisms of schemes of equal characteristic zero. This result implies analogous vanishing theorems for projective morphisms of algebraic spaces\, formal schemes\, and both complex and non-Archimedean analytic spaces. My vanishing theorem is optimal given known counterexamples to vanishing theorems in positive and mixed characteristic and has many applications to both algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. I will discuss some of these applications\, in particular my joint work with Shiji Lyu on the minimal model program with scaling for projective morphisms of excellent schemes\, algebraic spaces\, formal schemes\, and both complex and non-Archimedean analytic spaces.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture | Early Modernity\, the Armenian Printing Revolution\, and Imagining the \"Confessional Nation\" across the Armenian Diaspora\, 1680-1800
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or on Zoom at https://umich.zoom.us/j/92686694384\nMeeting ID: 926 8669 4384\n\nA history of the continent-spanning Armenian print tradition in the early modern period\n \n Early Modernity and Mobility explores the disparate yet connected histories of Armenian printing establishments in early modern Europe and Asia. From 1512\, when the first Armenian printed codex appeared in Venice\, to the end of the early modern period in 1800\, Armenian presses operated in nineteen locations across the Armenian diaspora. Linking far-flung locations in Amsterdam\, Livorno\, Marseille\, Saint Petersburg\, and Astrakhan to New Julfa\, Madras\, and Calcutta\, Armenian presses published a thousand editions with more than half a million printed volumes in Armenian script.\n \n Drawing on extensive archival research\, Sebouh David Aslanian explores why certain books were published at certain times\, how books were sold across the diaspora\, who read them\, and how the printed word helped fashion a new collective identity for early modern Armenians. In examining the Armenian print tradition Aslanian tells a larger story about the making of the diaspora itself. Arguing that “confessionalism” and the hardening of boundaries between the Armenian and Roman churches was the “driving engine” of Armenian book history\, Aslanian makes a revisionist contribution to the early modern origins of Armenian nationalism.\n \n Sebouh David Aslanian is professor and Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History at the University of California\, Los Angeles and the inaugural director of the Armenian Studies Center at the Promise Armenian Institute. He is the author of the award-winning From the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean: The Global Trade Networks of Armenian Merchants from New Julfa. Aslanian has published widely on early modern world and Armenian history and is the author of the recent Early Modernity and Mobility: Port Cities and Printers across the Armenian Diaspora\, 1512-1800 (New Haven: Yale University Press\, 2023).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSignaling-regulated transcription factors (TFs) orchestrate the developmental and differentiation trajectories of cells and their activation states. Understanding TF activities at the single-cell level represents a formidable challenge. Single-cell multi-omics technologies now measure different modalities such as RNA\, surface proteins\, and chromatin states. Moreover\, emerging spatial technologies offer highly multiplex profiling of RNAs and proteins\, while preserving the spatial context of the tissue. Consequently\, there is a tremendous need for computational methods to integrate these measurements and infer the underlying cell type- and state-specific transcriptional programs. In this talk\, I will present our computational frameworks for delineating context-specific regulatory programs based on single-cell omics and spatial transcriptomics datasets. These frameworks have the potential to fill a significant gap in knowledge by defining cell context-specific regulators driving cellular identity\, as well as discovering new targets and approaches for advancing therapy.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09\n\nShort Bio:\nHatice Ülkü Osmanbeyoğlu joined University of Pittsburgh in December 2018 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a member of Hillman's Cancer Biology Program. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Special Lecture Series: Classical and relative Sen theory
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Sen theory is a powerful tool to study the Hodge-Tate structure of p-adic Galois representations. I will give a summary of Sen’s results and explain how to generalize these results to the relative setting\, i.e. over a rigid analytic variety\, which is usually called p-adic non-abelian Hodge theory.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Comparison of viscosity solutions for a class of second order PDEs on the Wasserstein space
DESCRIPTION:We prove a comparison result for viscosity solutions of second order parabolic partial differential equations in the Wasserstein space. The comparison is valid for semisolutions that are Lipschitz continuous in the measure in a Fourier-Wasserstein metric and uniformly continuous in time. The class of equations we consider is motivated by Mckean-Vlasov control problems with common noise and filtering problems. The proof of comparison relies on a novel version of Ishii's lemma\, which is tailor-made for the class of equations we consider.\n\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar and Xin Zhang.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Math Undergraduate Seminar: Knot Theory (Knot Rigorously)
DESCRIPTION:To do knot theory formally\, you have to introduce a lot of tools from algebraic topology (it's not easy!). That being said\, we can say a fair bit about the subject without getting into the technical details. I will introduce the basic notions of knot theory\, some problems in the field (which are easy to state and insanely difficult to solve)\, and introduce a few invariants used to tell knots apart.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Taxes and Tyranny
DESCRIPTION:Presented by AIA Lecturer Nathan T. Elkins\, Deputy Director of the American Numismatic Society\n\nIn the Roman world\, libertas (freedom or liberty) was the condition opposite slavery. As with so many Roman ideals\, the concept was also personified. Under the emperors\, her image often appeared after the death of an emperor who was characterized as a tyrant\, suggesting the new emperor would rule in a more inclusive way. Scholarly interpretations have typically asserted her appearance was a message for the Senate (libertas senatoria)\, but the great frequency of her imagery in the reigns of some emperors and her appearance on the coins of emperors who succeeded deified emperors suggests a more popular message. Coins from the reigns of Caligula and Galba specifically connect Libertas with the remission of taxes and customs duties and the appearance of her image on coins in the second century CE tends to correlate with the forgiveness of public debt and activity related to the alimenta\, an Italian program that provided resources to relieve the financial burden associated with the upbringing of children. Libertas thus had a broader meaning and appeal than has been recognized.\n\nProfessor Elkins’ research areas include Roman art\, coinage and coin iconography\, topography and architecture\, sport and spectacle\, and the illicit antiquities trade. He is the author of three books: A Monument to Dynasty and Death: The Story of Rome’s Colosseum and the Emperors Who Built It (JHUP\, 2019)\, The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva\, AD 96-98 (Oxford\, 2017)\, and Monuments in Miniature: Architecture on Roman Coinage (ANS\, 2015). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London\, Fellow of the American Numismatic Society (New York)\, and of the Royal Numismatic Society (London).\n\nThe Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) is North America's largest and oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to archaeology. The Institute advances awareness\, education\, fieldwork\, preservation\, publication\, and research of archaeological sites and cultural heritage throughout the world. Your contribution makes a difference.
