SUMMARY:Exhibition:Harbingers of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1945\, artist\, educator\, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Sentimental Archive: Remembering Nubia through Salvage Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases select photographs from The American University in Cairo’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library taken by the renowned Egyptian photographer Abd al-Fattah Eid as well as by the Cairo-born Swiss artist Margo Veillon.\n\nIn 1964\, the construction of the Aswan High Dam displaced Nubians from their ancestral villages along the banks of the Nile in Egypt. In the years immediately preceding the dam’s construction\, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \n\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or “Old Nubia” the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years\, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond\, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive\, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time\, space\, and circumstance. \n\nThis selection of photographs includes persons\, places\, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline\, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\n\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll\, assistant professor of anthropology\, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid\, doctoral student in anthropology\, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\n\nFor a deeper dive\, visit the companion exhibit\, Narrating Nubia\, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. It delves into the archaeological\, anthropological\, and community narratives of both ancient and modern-day Nubia spanning Egypt and Sudan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Grant Gunn
DESCRIPTION:The ice underside in freshwater lakes of various sizes has been observed to be appreciably rough as a function of flow oscillations and pressure ridging in large open lakes\, and variability in snow depth modifying the conductive heat flux (i.e. freezing rates) of the lake. In the case of an underwater oil pipeline rupture occurring in the winter\, consolidated ice cover serves to both retain buoyant oil and mask the location of the oil to clean-up crews. The storage capacity of freshwater ice is a function of the roughness of the ice-water interface\, the magnitude and correlation length of which varies dependent on the weather from year to year. This presentation focuses on preliminary investigations in the Straits of Mackinac which indicates that ice bottom variability in a region with considerable oscillatory flow is 0.3 m3 per m2\, similar to that of first year sea ice. Additionally\, the implication of ice-bottom roughness also extend to studies with the aim to improve the understanding of microwave interactions with freshwater ice (observed with airborne and spaceborne platforms)\, which holds potential to detect the presence of under-ice oil.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | The Themepark of Nuclear: An Exhaustive Survey on Nuclear Power Plant Visitor Centers in Post-Fukushima Japan
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom. Zoom registration at http://myumi.ch/Z3QrJ \n\nThis presentation will focus *specifically* on nuclear power plant visitor centers (NPP-VCs) rather than simply nuclear power plants.\n \n Since the tragic “3.11” disaster in 2011\, much has been said in Japan about nuclear power generation\, but nuclear power plant visitor centers have not been talked about as much. An NPP-VC is a facility\, run by the electric industry\, for fostering public relations promoting nuclear power generation. In other words\, the NPP-VC is a discourse apparatus of nuclear “enlightenment.” Today\, there are more than 30 NPP-VCs in Japan\, an even higher number than that of nuclear power plants that serve merely as power plants.\n \n Having done fieldwork on every NPP-VC operating in Japan since 2012\, Prof. Hasegawa will now reveal the actual conditions of such facilities\, which are reminiscent in some way of Tokyo Disneyland\, with attractive architecture and many entertainment-related exhibits but\, in spite of this\, few visitors. To attempt an international comparison\, Prof. Hasegawa has also visited NPP-VCs in Taiwan\, Europe\, and the U.S.\n \n In this lecture\, Prof. Hasegawa will share an aspect of the present status of NPP-VCs in Japan. Some NPP-VCs are located at unexpected places in unexpected (and occasionally stealthy) forms. How do they function in the discourse structure on nuclear power in Japan and symbolize it?\n \n Hajime Hasegawa is Professor of Media Studies at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo\, Japan. His major was media studies and cultural sociology. He graduated and received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo. He has committed to many projects and publications\, including monographs such as *Media Studies for Publishing and Knowledge: A History and Regeneration of Editorship* (Misuzu Shobo\, 2003)\, *Everyday Life as Attraction: Dancing Machinery with Body* (Kawade Shobo Shinsha\, 2009)\, and *How We Can Hope in the Disneylandizing Society: Games of Technology and Body* (Keio University Press\, 2014). He stayed at CJS as a visiting scholar from 2017 to 2018 and is now visiting again.\n\n*This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at wugou@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Ariel Feldstein\, M.D.\, Novo Nordisk and University of California San Diego
DESCRIPTION:In person at Palmer Commons\, Forum Hall\, Thursday October 12\, Noon - 1:00 p.m. (and on Zoom)\n\nCell death and inflammation are two central elements in the development of liver fibrosis and injury. Inflammasomes are intracellular multiprotein complexes expressed in both hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells in the liver that are key regulators of inflammation and cell fate. They respond to cellular danger signals by activating caspase 1\, releasing the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18\, as well as initiating a novel pathway of programmed cell death termed “pyroptosis.” This novel type of cell death is intrinsically pro-inflammatory because it is associated with the release of IL-1β and other intracellular content to the extracellular space including NLRP3 inflammasome particles that represent a novel mechanism to spread inflammasome signaling to adjacent cells. These downstream effectors of NLRP3 inlfammasome activation in the liver can initiate and perpetuate abnormal wound-healing responses with the principle cellular target being the activation of hepatic stellate cells. From the various inflammasomes\, the NLRP3 inflammasome has been increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory liver diseases\, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis\, a disease process that is soaring and has evolved as a primary cause of liver fibrosis and need for liver transplantation. In this seminar\, I will highlight the growing evidence for both indirect and direct effects of NRLP3 inflammasome activation in triggering liver fibrosis and its role for therapeutic intervention for treatment of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). \n\nAbout the Speaker:\nAriel Feldstein\, M.D.\nCorporate Vice President Liver & Kidney Disease\nResearch Novo Nordisk\nProfessor of Pediatrics\nUniversity of California San Diego\n\nAriel Feldstein leads research and early development in the liver and kidney disease therapeutic areas at Novo Nordisk. \n\n Ariel is a physician-scientist with more than 20 years of experience in academic-industry translational research in metabolic and liver diseases\, supported continuously for the last 18 years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\, as well as several non-federal grants including the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)\, The American Association for Liver Diseases (AASLD)\, and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). Ariel trained in pediatrics and liver diseases as well as translational research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota and was then recruited to the Cleveland Clinic where he went on to become the Director of Research for the Pediatric Institute. In 2011\, he moved to San Diego as Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology\, Hepatology and Nutrition at Rady Children’s Hospital and Tenured Professor of Pediatrics and Liver diseases at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). In 2021\, Ariel transitioned to the pharma industry\, working first as a Senior Scientific Advisor and in 2022 assumed the role of Corporate Vice President for Liver and Kidney disease research in R&ED at Novo Nordisk. In this position he is responsible for discovery research and preclinical development driving novel targets in chronic liver diseases including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and chronic kidney diseases towards clinical development. He is additionally responsible to lead external high-profile collaborations with both biotech and academic institutions including the Flagship/ Pioneering Medicine – Novo Nordisk collaboration as well as collaborations with MIT\, BROAD Institute\, and Harvard.\n\nAriel is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed publications in top medical journals. His research laboratory has provided important evidence on the role of cell death pathways\, and inflammatory responses driven by Inflammasomes during chronic injury\, and fibrosis. He is an innovator with several issued patents including the development of soluble cytokeratin-18 as a diagnostic biomarker for NASH. He is a serial entrepreneur being the founder of three Biotech Companies\, Torrey Pines Metabolic Health Labs\, Jecure Therapeutics (acquired by Roche in 2018)\, and Elgia Therapeutics.\n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE BLUE/GREEN SEMINAR: “Quantum Simulations For Materials & Chemistry Meets ML/AI: Mechanistic Investigations In Polymerization\, Reactions\, and Materials Design”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE Seminar Series features guest speakers from various research backgrounds throughout the year. ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nAbstract: Computational algorithms are now powerful enough that they can predict many properties of materials\, chemicals and processes before they are synthesized/performed. By implementing and developing new approaches to calculate materials and chemical properties in supercomputers\, we have predicted hundreds of thousands materials for energy capture\, conversion and storage (e.g. batteries and catalysts).\n\nThe computations predicted several new materials which were later made and tested in the lab. The creation of our large amount of materials in-silico. We have implemented different machine learning methods to find further (materials or reaction) design principles. Some of the applications of the design principles of materials has been used towards developing an alternative way to generate and store energy (e.g. next generation Li-batteries\, H2 storage)\, prediction of materials with new properties (mechanic and electronic) and chemical reactions paths (epoxide polymerization and chemical reactions in general).\n\nBio: Professor Jose Mendoza has been recognized for his impressive research career\, awards\, and national media coverage. He is an emerging leader in the fields of theoretical chemistry and computational materials science.\n\nHe was awarded the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Newcomb Cleveland Award\, this Society’s oldest and most prestigious award\; the International Center for Material Research (ICMR) fellowship\; and the Roberto Rocca Fellowship. More recently\, he has been awarded the ONR Faculty Fellowship (2017)\, and the Carl Storm Fellowship (2018). In 2018\, he was named an Emerging Investigator by the Royal Society of Chemistry and was named a 2020\, 2021\, 2022\, 2023 Scialog Fellow. \n\nDr. Mendoza has made significant contributions to the understanding of structure in 2D-materials\, energy storage\, catalysis\, and how to use data-mining and machine learning on the physical sciences. More specifically\, he has provided significant advances on understanding defects in 2D-materials\, future 2D-materials\, next-generation Li-batteries\, hydrogen storage\, and catalysis for clean energy (CO2 reduction\, water splitting\, and hydrogen evolution)\, materials design principles\, machine learning force fields\, and material databases for data mining. His research has been featured in Forbes magazine\, CNBC\, Public Radio\, MRS Bulletin\, C&EN News\, Laser Focus World magazine\, and the DOE Highlights. His research has been disseminated through 61 invited talks both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mendoza’s research has received funding from NSF\, DOE\, DOD\, APS\, Sloan Foundation\, to name a few.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Humanities Mindsets
DESCRIPTION:Register for this workshop at https://myumi.ch/W24xd.\n\nPresented by the Institute for the Humanities\, Rackham Graduate School\, and the University Career Center\, this series of events is intended to support humanities graduate students from across fields in exploring and preparing for the diverse career paths available to them. Students may attend events individually\, but may find it especially helpful to attend each in progression.\n\nAbout today's workshop:\nLed by Derek Attig and Mearah Quinn-Brauner\, the Humanities Mindsets workshop invites participants to experiment with using humanistic modes of thinking in conversations about jobs and careers. The workshop adapts a form used in many career workshops: having participants reflect on their experiences and the experiences of their peers using shared terms. But instead of an unfamiliar (and potentially alienating) vocabulary of “skills” or “values\,” we guide participants in using theoretical frameworks from the humanities to analyze those experiences. Our hope is that the workshop helps humanists see their working lives as worthy of deep\, critical\, and playful intellectual engagement—and equips them to help one another to make stronger and more confident career decisions.\n\nAbout the presenters:\nDerek Attig is the assistant dean for career & professional development at the University of Illinois. Mearah Quinn-Brauner is the senior director for strategy and policy at Northwestern University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:899 Seminar Series: Andres Gomez
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nAndrés Gómez received his B.S. in Mathematics and B.S. in Computer Science from the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia). He then obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California Berkeley. From 2017 to 2019\, Dr. Gómez worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh\, and since 2019 he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. Dr. Gómez research focuses on developing new theory and tools for challenging optimization problems arising in finance\, machine learning and statistics. His research is funded my multiple grants and gifts from the National Science Foundation\, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research\, Google and Meta.\n\nAbstract \n\n Common statistical techniques fail if the data used to train the model is corrupted by gross errors or outliers. In fact\, even the presence of a single outlier may cause estimators to result in arbitrarily large errors. Several robust estimators have been proposed in the statistical literature\, which automatically detect and discard outliers before fitting a model using the remaining data. Unfortunately\, the resulting training problem is NP-hard and challenging to solve\, even with modern optimization techniques. Thus\, practitioners typically resort to heuristics\, which have inferior statistical properties and may result in low-quality solutions unless stringent assumptions on the data-generation process are made.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Using gene genealogies to understand complex traits
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our weekly Thursday Seminar Series. \n\nAbout: Ancestral recombination graphs (ARGs) use trees to relate variation in a sample of genomes to the genealogical sources of that variation. Recent computational advances have enabled the largest-scale ARG estimates to date\, raising the possibility of ARG-based approaches to any data analysis that takes genetic variation as input. In this talk\, I will discuss ways in which estimated ARGs can interface with the study of complex traits. These projects highlight the ARG---and the marginal trees it encodes---as a common language for relating evolutionary and statistical genetics.\n\nWebsite: https://edgepopgen.github.io/edgelab/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Astronomy 2023-2024 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Unveiling the infancy of planetary systems\"\n\nThe large variety of observed planetary systems is rooted in the complex physical and chemical processes that lead to their formation. In the last few years\, great observational and theoretical developments have dramatically improved our understanding of how forming planets are affected by and interact with their birth environments\, the protoplanetary disks. In this talk\, I will show how physical and chemical processes in disks concur in promoting conditions amenable for planet formation. I will focus on novel methodologies to detect forming planets and circumplanetary disks from ALMA data\, in particular in the kinematical structure of protoplanetary disks. I will finally discuss present challenges and upcoming developments in this exciting field\, focusing on new and upcoming data from ALMA\, JWST and 30m class telescopes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Seminar: Convergence of the renormalised model for the generalised KPZ equation via preparation maps
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will present the convergence of the renormalised model of the generalised KPZ equation via local transformations that are governed by preparation maps. The main idea is an extension of a result on the convergence of a class Feynman diagrams given by Hairer and Quastel.\nWith this extension\, one is able to perform local transformations that make appear the renormalisation given for a model defined recursively via preparation maps in the context of Regularity Structures. This approach works both in the discrete and continuous settings and could lead to a general convergence theorem.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exposure (E. Levinas\, F. Moten\, K. Lamar)
DESCRIPTION:This paper asks what happens when we examine Levinasian exposure—understood as performative articulation of political concepts—in light of what Fred Moten calls the “social aesthetics of Black radicalism.” It will consider Moten’s critique of Levinas while simultaneously “exposing” the notion of exposure to poetry and rhythm\, which can be seen (or heard) as opening his thought beyond the limits that Moten ascribes to it.\n\nErin Graff Zivin is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California\, where she is Director of the Experimental Humanities Lab\, Acting Director of the Society of Fellows in the Humanities\, and head of the international “Women in Theory” collective. She is author of Anarchaeologies: Reading as Misreading (Fordham UP\, 2020)\, Figurative Inquisitions: Conversion\, Torture\, and Truth in the Luso-Hispanic Atlantic (Northwestern UP\, 2014)\, and The Wandering Signifier: Rhetoric of Jewishness in the Latin American Imaginary (Duke UP\, 2008)\, and is currently completing a book on experimental transmedial aesthetics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Dyn/Geo/Top: Ergodic Theory\, Integer Dynamics\, and Patterns in Primes
DESCRIPTION:The integers can be viewed as a discrete dynamical system with an ‘add one’ operator. Under this framework\, various questions about recurrence in ergodic systems specialize to very concrete problems in additive combinatorics. We’ll discuss the tools that are commonly applied to these problems by studying Roth’s Theorem and Szemeredi’s Theorem for Primes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ten Lectures on Schubert Polynomials: Lecture 2. Back-stable Schubert Polynomials
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture we construct a back-stable Schubert polynomial\, in a polynomial ring \nZ[c\,x\,y] in three sets of variables\, for any permutation of any finite set of integers. As with the double Schubert polynomials of the first lecture\, they are characterized by how they give degrees of degeneracy loci of matrices. A few algebraic and combinatorial formulas for these polynomials will be given.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chris Van Allsburg
DESCRIPTION:Chris Van Allsburg is one of America’s most innovative picture book creators. Since 1979\, his books have blurred the line between fantasy and reality. His illustrations are provocative and eerie\, often hinting at an alternate reality lurking behind the next page. His book Jumanji and its sequel Zathura became a series of Hollywood films. His most recognized book\, The Polar Express\, was also adapted for the big screen and is one of the bestselling children&#039\;s books of all time. \nVan Allsburg was raised in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, and received his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan\, where he majored in sculpture\, learning bronze casting\, wood carving\, resin molding\, and other techniques. He continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design\, graduating with a master&#039\;s degree in sculpture. Shortly after receiving his graduate degree\, Van Allsburg began to show his sculptures in New York City galleries.\nHe began drawing in the winter of 1977\, when his teaching commitments at Rhode Island School of Design and a poorly heated sculpture studio far across town discouraged his customary night-time work schedule. At home\, in the evening\, he began creating drawings that suggested strange narratives. His wife\, Lisa\, an elementary school art teacher who used picture books in her classroom\, thought her husband’s work might be suitable for children&#039\;s books. She showed his work to an editor\, who encouraged Van Allsburg to think about writing a story that would suit the character of the pictures he wanted to make. His first book\, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi\, was published in 1979.\nVan Allsburg has written and/or illustrated 21 books. He was awarded the Caldecott Medal for Jumanji and The Polar Express and received a Caldecott Honor for The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. He has received the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement in children’s literature\, a National Book Award\, and has been inducted into The Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame\, among many other honors. He lives outside of Boston\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Arts & Resistance: Reimagining Mars: From Canals to the Russian Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Arts & Resistance: \"Reimagining Mars: From 'Canals' to the Russian Revolution\"\n\nSanil Mittal\, LSA Astronomy and Physics\; Docent\, Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory\n\nThursday\, October 12\, 2023\; 7:00 pm\n\nThis talk will dive deep into the so-called \"canals\" of Mars -- first described in 1877 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli -- and how they made Mars a central landscape in many works of fiction in the late 19th and early 20th century. We will see some examples of cultural and artistic interpretation of Mars and the canals in science fiction and the impact of such representations on progressive politics and revolution\, primarily in the early and mid 20th century. The talk is presented as part of the LSA Arts & Resistance Theme Semester.\n\nSanil Mittal is a Junior in LSA majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics and Interdisciplinary Physics with a minor in Business. He is a student docent at the Detroit observatory and has imaged and processed many of the images taken through the Henry Fitz Telescope. He is also engaged in making astronomy more accessible to the public with his work as the president of the Student Astronomical Society on campus. He has previously given a talk on how Mars has been depicted in Science Fiction\, and here he expands on that idea.\n\nAs with all Observatory events\, the Observatory will be open for tours and observing\, weather permitting\, following the talk.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rewrite Your Story
DESCRIPTION:Who are you? What is your story? We all have a story — one that repeats daily in our minds\, and drives every decision we make. Not all of us are aware of our story or its potential power. Become aware of your story and change your life. Begin by asking yourself these questions: Are you content with the way your story is unfolding? Is there anything holding you back? Do you have thoughts of not being enough? Does fear stop you from living your best life? This is where the process of rewriting your story begins. In this process\, you’ll learn to: (1) Understand that you are not your thoughts\, you are an observer\; (2) Reframe previous hardships into opportunities\; (3) Rediscover & embrace your authentic self. Are you ready to take the first step?

SUMMARY:Performance:\"True West\" by Sam Shepard
DESCRIPTION:Undergraduate student Nick Alexander presents this senior thesis show\, a performance of *True West* by Sam Shepard. Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance: Directing.

\n\n“This American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin\, the achiever\, is working on a script he has sold to producer Saul Kimmer when Lee\, a demented petty thief\, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer\, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak\, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale.” - Concord Theatricals\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Guys and Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City\, *Guys and Dolls* is one of the quintessential musical romantic comedies. Frank Loesser's brassy\, immortal score – featuring “Adelaide’s Lament” and the classic “Luck Be a Lady” – makes *Guys and Dolls* a true crowd pleaser. \n\nGambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck\; meanwhile\, his girlfriend\, nightclub performer Adelaide\, laments that they've been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan hatches a plan to get the dough from a bet with fellow gambler Sky Masterson\, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary\, Sarah Brown\, as a result. *Guys and Dolls* takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana and even into the sewers of New York City\, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. \n\nMusic & lyrics by Frank Loesser\nBook by Abe Burrows & Jo Swerling\nBased on a story and characters by Damon Runyon\nDirected by Vincent J. Cardinal\nMusic direction by Jason DeBord\n\nFUN FACTS: Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy\, *Guys and Dolls* ran for 1\,200 performances after it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics and won a bevy of awards\, including Tony Awards\, Drama Desks\, and Oliviers.
