It centers on the titular \u201cmanga map\u201d, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore, history, architecture, flora\/fauna, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction, and how that plays with the definition of a \u201cmap.\u201d\r\n\r\nAlongside the exhibit, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse, where the map will be transcribed\/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. Bondarenko\u2019s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko\u2019s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova\u2019s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline, red thread connects these projects, weaving through clay and fabric, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on \u201cArts and Resistance.\u201d\r\n\r\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist, a native of Ukraine, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700), many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However, as the pages on display attest, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\r\n\r\nThe word \u201cIllumination,\u201d from the Latin illuminare, \u201cto enlighten or to illuminate,\u201d refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece, or first page of text, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter, and even miniatures, that is, scenes with an independent narrative. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. It will include a few topics: (1) general theory of sensors; (2) basic characteristics and applications of sensors; (3) unique sensing elements and interface reactions such as peptides, conductive polymers, ionic liquids and nanocrystals in our sensing strategy to achieve in situ and real time detection of important chemical and bioanalytes with high temporal and spatial resolution. Our fundamental and applied research at solid\/liquid\/gas interfaces allows us to address many sensors challenges, especially miniaturized, real-time and continuous sensing that are essential for their integration with engineering advancements such as portable electronics, networked sensing and next-generation monolithic implementation of autonomous sensors with the performance, cost, power, and operational lifetime characteristics to suit a broad range of applications in health, environment and energy applications\r\n\r\nSHORT BIO: Xiangqun Zeng is currently a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. She recently accepted a joint full professor position at departments of chemistry, chemical and biomedical engineering at University of Missouri Columbia starting Jan. 1, 2024. Dr. Zeng received her Ph.D. in electrochemistry and surface chemistry from State University of New York at Buffalo, her M.S. in Electroanalytical Chemistry from Beijing Normal University and her B.S. in Analytical Chemistry from Sichuan University in China. Her research interests lie at materials and interface science. Currently, her lab studies fundamental interfacial phenomena at electrode interfaces for the development of next generation detection technologies, i.e., in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo, in situ detection and quantification of molecules and species of chemical and biological significance with high sensitivity and specificity at high temporal and\/or spatial resolution for a broad range of applications including health, environment and energy applications. She has nine patents and published over 100 high quality peer review papers and six book chapters which summarize her significant contributions to applied electrochemistry, analytical chemistry and sensor fields. She has mentored over 80 students\/postdocs\/visiting scholars including a Fulbright scholar. Seventeen of her former trainees obtained competitive academic positions in US and other countries. She is an organizer for the 18th international meeting on chemical sensors in 2021 and an Editorial Board member of Journal of Electrochemistry. This is not entirely unjustified. Relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims have certainly included their share of religious wars, theological polemic, and oppression. Yet there is also another side to the Abrahamic coin. Even in the midst of communal rivalry, Jewish, Christian and Muslim practitioners have often turned to each other to think through religious concepts, elucidate a shared sense of sacred history, and enrich their ritual practices. From the development of shared ritual practices surrounding childbirth to ecumenical medieval study groups, this talk explores historical moments when Jews, Christians, and Muslim have done their religious thinking together.\r\n\r\n--\r\n\r\nFrom Dr. Wollenberg: I teach biblical reception history, or the history of Jewish biblical interpretation. My research explores the diverse ways in which historical Jewish communities have imagined the Hebrew Bible as a revelation and the varied modes in which they have engaged with the biblical tradition in practice.
