SUMMARY:Performance:DruidO’Casey: The Plough and the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars is a gripping portrayal of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin\, Ireland\, a six-day conflict led by Irish Republicans who were attempting to establish an independent Ireland while the British were preoccupied by World War I. Set in a tenement house\, the story follows the lives of ordinary citizens who are caught up in the tumultuous events of the rebellion. The tenement’s residents grapple with their own loyalties and beliefs as the rebellion unfolds\, with their romanticized ideals clashing with the harsh realities of war.\n\nThrough vivid dialogue and dramatic events\, O’Casey masterfully portrays their struggles\, dreams\, and disillusionment in the face of political upheaval\, challenging romanticized notions of heroism while highlighting the often-unseen sacrifices made by ordinary individuals. Director Garry Hynes “deliver[s] a Plough that leaves room for all of the fun to be had…while shifting elegantly into an expressionistic mode. A significant achievement by Hynes and her superb ensemble.” (The Irish Examiner)\n\nThis performance is part of Seán O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy\, which includes The Plough and the Stars\, The Shadow of a Gunman\, and Juno and the Paycock. Get tickets to all three performances and save.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Sentimental Archive: Remembering Nubia through Salvage Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases select photographs from The American University in Cairo’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library taken by the renowned Egyptian photographer Abd al-Fattah Eid as well as by the Cairo-born Swiss artist Margo Veillon.\n\nIn 1964\, the construction of the Aswan High Dam displaced Nubians from their ancestral villages along the banks of the Nile in Egypt. In the years immediately preceding the dam’s construction\, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \n\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or “Old Nubia” the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years\, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond\, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive\, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time\, space\, and circumstance. \n\nThis selection of photographs includes persons\, places\, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline\, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\n\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll\, assistant professor of anthropology\, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid\, doctoral student in anthropology\, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\n\nFor a deeper dive\, visit the companion exhibit\, Narrating Nubia\, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. It delves into the archaeological\, anthropological\, and community narratives of both ancient and modern-day Nubia spanning Egypt and Sudan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Zhenyu Tan Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Kinesin regulation via kinesin binding protein (KIFBP) and autoinhibition\n\nABSTRACT: The spatiotemporal regulation of organelle positioning is critical for proper cellular function\, especially as the cell responds to a changing environment. A key player in this process is the kinesin superfamily of motor proteins. These proteins participate in a diverse range of cellular processes\, from facilitating long-range axonal transport to orchestrating the mitotic spindle during\ncell division. The regulation of kinesin motor proteins occurs via inhibitory and activation-based mechanisms\, where kinesin motor proteins are subject to autoinhibition when not bound to a cargo.\nRecently\, the discovery of the kinesin-binding protein (KIFBP) revealed a novel form of kinesin inhibition\, in which KIFBP binds to kinesin motor domains to block microtubule-binding. Cell biological studies indicate that both autoinhibition and KIFBP-mediated inhibition are critical for proper cellular function. However\, there remains little consensus and conflicting reports on the molecular mechanism of kinesin autoinhibition due to a lack of structural information on fulllength kinesin motors. Moreover\, the mechanism governing the KIFBP inhibition is poorly defined. In my Ph.D. research\, I applied integrative structural analysis to determine how\nautoinhibition and KIFBP-mediated inhibition occurs at molecular levels. My research project on kinesin-1 autoinhibition revised the established model in the field by offering the first comprehensive description of kinesin-1 autoinhibition (Tan et al. eLife 2023). Kinesin-1\, discovered nearly 40 years ago\, was the first identified kinesin and serves as a model for understanding kinesin function. A widely accepted model of kinesin-1 autoinhibition is that the C-terminal tail of kinesin-1 drives autoinhibition to block motility. However\, published data suggested that the tail may not be the sole determinant of autoinhibition. To uncover the molecular\nmechanism of kinesin-1 autoinhibition\, I combined AlphaFold protein structure prediction\, electron microscopy and cross-linking mass spectrometry to reveal the molecular architecture of autoinhibited kinesin-1. My findings revised the previous model and showed that multiple intramolecular contacts within the kinesin-1 lead to an inhibited state. My work provides a framework to understand why kinesin-1 activation requires cargo adaptors and microtubule-associated proteins to bind to and compete with intramolecular association to produce an open\,\nactive motor. My second project aimed to investigate kinesin binding protein (KIFBP)\, a newly identified regulatory binding partner of kinesins. KIFBP exhibits the remarkable ability to associate and inhibit specific members of the kinesin superfamily. Mutations to KIFBP in humans have been linked to the neurological disorder Goldberg-Shprintzen (GOSHS) syndrome. Despite the clinical\nrelevance of KIFBP\, it remains unclear how KIFBP binds kinesins\, how it achieves specificity for a subset of kinesins\, and which kinesin(s) are responsible for the phenotypes seen in GOSHS. To characterize the mechanism of kinesin regulation through KIFBP\, I determined cryo-EM structures of KIFBP alone at 3.8Å and KIFBP bound to two different kinesin motors at 4.5-4.9Å. I used de novo atomic modeling along with Phenix and Rosetta to develop a model for the KIFBP-engaged\nkinesin motors. My structures provided the first atomistic view of kinesin engaged by KIFBP\, showing that\, KIFBP remodels and displaces the microtubules binding helix from kinesins to block microtubule binding. My work (Solon*\, Tan*\, et al. Science Advances 2021) paves the way for a deeper understanding of how KIFBP regulates its subset of kinesins\, how it achieves specificity in binding\, and how it contributes to GOSHS

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LHS Collaboratory
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:\nEwout W. Steyerberg\, PhD\nProfessor of Clinical Biostatistics & Medical Decision Making\, Chair\, Dept of Biomedical Data Sciences\nLeiden University Medical Center\, The Netherlands\n\nClinical prediction models aim to predict a person’s risk of an outcome (e.g. complications\, mortality) given their observed characteristics (1). Risk predictions are traditionally derived from regression models. Artificial Intelligence\, and specifically Machine Learning methods\, are gaining interest to develop predictive algorithms. Predictions from classic models or AI algorithms need to be reliable to provide valid support for tasks such as shared decision making and whether a person should initiate a particular treatment.\nThe aim of this talk is to review recent developments in prediction model development and validation. Illustrations will be provided from different medical applications. Trustworthiness will be discussed in relation to the statistical aspects -such as sample size and the exceptionality of patients-\, model uncertainty\, and heterogeneity between contexts of practical application.\n\nReferences\n1. SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - Implementing and Adjusting a Non-probability Web Survey: Experiences of EVENs (Survey on the Impact of COVID19 on Ethnic Minorities in the United Kingdom)
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nOctober 11\, 2023\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nImplementing and Adjusting a Non-probability Web Survey: Experiences of EVENs (Survey on the Impact of COVID19 on Ethnic Minorities in the United Kingdom)\n\nNatalie Shlomo\nProfessor of Social Statistics\, University of Manchester\n\nThis is joint work with Andrea Aparcio-Castro\, Daniel Ellingworth\, Angelo Moretti\, Harry Taylor\, Nissa Finney and James Nazroo \n \nWe discuss the challenges of implementing and adjusting a large-scale non-probability web survey. For the application\, we focus on the 2021 Evidence for Equality National Survey (EVENS) which was led by the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE) at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom\, in partnership with Ipsos-MORI. The aim was to understand the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on ethnic and religious minority groups in the UK. Standard probability-based surveys\, even with ethnic minority group boosts\, do not have the sample sizes required to obtain reliable estimates for small group statistics. We therefore designed a non-probability web survey of ethnic minority groups to overcome these limitations. We formed partnerships with community organizations and used innovative recruitment strategies\, including digital and social media. Daily monitoring of the data collection against desired sample sizes and R-indicator calculations allowed the team to focus attention on the recruitment of specific groups in a responsive data collection mode. We also supplemented the sample with existing members in both established non-probability and probability-based panels in the UK. We describe the measures applied to improve the quality of the collected data and the statistical adjustments to correct for selection and coverage biases based on estimating the probability of participation in the non-probability sample using combined probability reference samples followed by calibration to auxiliary information from the UK Census 2021. We demonstrate how a pseudo-population bootstrap approach can be designed to obtain bootstrap weights to allow for statistical analyses and inference. \n \nNatalie Shlomo is Professor of Social Statistics at the University of Manchester and publishes widely in the area of survey statistics\, including small area estimation\, adaptive survey designs\, non-probability sampling\, confidentiality and privacy\, data linkage and integration. She has over 70 publications and refereed book chapters and a track record of generating external funding for her research. She is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI)\, a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society\, a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and President 2023-2025 of the International Association of Survey Statisticians. She also serves on national and international Methodology Advisory Boards at National Statistical Institutes. \n\nHomepage: https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/natalie.shlomo.html

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: The Extension of Post's Lattice to Countable Borel Clones
DESCRIPTION:Given a set of cardinals N and an underlying set X\, an N-ary function clone on X is a set of functions f: Xⁿ → X for n ∈ N\, which contains all projection functions and is closed under composition. In 1941\, Emil Post fully characterized all clones of finite functions f: 2ⁿ → 2 in a lattice famously titled Post’s lattice\, ordered by inclusion. In this second seminar on this topic\, we will again motivate the two main perspectives towards clones\, discuss new results\, and briefly touch on the current focus of this project.

DESCRIPTION:I outline a new production mechanism for dark matter (DM) dubbed \"recycling\".\nIn recycling\, multiple DM candidates reside\, as massless particles\, in a dark sector which is initially in kinetic equilibrium with the Standard Model. The dark sector undergoes a first order phase transition (FOPT)\, and the DM candidates acquire a mass much larger than their temperature and therefore get trapped in the false vacuum. The rate of leakage of dark sector particles into the true vacuum is suppressed enough that eventually (some of or even all of) the pockets of false vacuum collapse into primordial black holes (PBHs). During Hawking evaporation\, PBHs reproduce (recycle) the DM candidates that initially collapsed into them. The DM particles emitted by PBHs are ultra-heavy (∼10^{12} GeV)\, due to being materialized in the true vacuum\, and are sparse enough to be able to explain the observed abundance of DM today without overclosing it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | The imprint of cosmic neutrinos and free-streaming radiation in the CMB
DESCRIPTION:One of the primary targets of current cosmological observations are light thermal relics of the hot big bang. Within the standard model of particle physics\, cosmic neutrinos constitute an important thermal relic but more generally many well-motivated extensions of the standard models predict the existence of other light thermal relics\, even more weakly coupled to ordinary matter. Recent advancements in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements have enabled indirect constraints on the cosmic neutrino background. This talk explores the current status and future prospects for enhancing these constraints\, with a specific focus on the phase shift in acoustic peaks of the CMB induced by neutrino fluctuations\, and more generally by any free-streaming species present at recombination.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Earnings\, Marriage\, and Lifetime Family Income: Generational Change for Men and Women
DESCRIPTION:We study generational change in the role of labor market behavior and marriage in determining the family income that individuals experience over their adult lives. Building on Altonji\, Giraldo-P ́aez\, Hynsj ̈o\, and Vidangos (2022)\, we estimate a model of individual earnings\, marriage\, divorce\, fertility\, and nonlabor income\, where key parameters vary with birth year. For the 1935–44\, 1945–62\, and 1967–80 birth cohorts\, we use the model to measure the dynamic responses of earnings\, marital status\, and family income to various labor market shocks\, education differences\, and permanent wage heterogeneity. For each cohort\, we also provide gender-specific estimates of the contribution of education\, permanent wages\, labor market shocks\, spouse characteristics\, spouse wage shocks\, and marital histories to the variance of lifetime family income. For both the dynamic responses and the variance decompositions\, we isolate the importance of effects on marriage probabilities and on spouse characteristics (sorting). We find that gender asymmetries are substantially smaller for more recent cohorts. The decline reflects the increase in the labor supply of married women as well as other changes. We also find that own characteristics have become increasingly important in the determination of lifetime family income for women\, while variation in spouse characteristics has become less important. The opposite is true for men. Gender differences in the sources of inequality in lifetime family income have narrowed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | How a Pendulum Clock Knows the Difference Between the Past and the Future
DESCRIPTION:There is a long-cherished hope\, which has its origins in the work of Boltzmann\, that all that we are going to need to do\, in order to account for all the differences there are between the past and the future\, is to add to the fundamental time-reversal-symmetric dynamical laws\, and to the standard statistical-mechanical probability-measure over the space of possible fundamental physical states\, a simple postulate – a so-called “past hypothesis” – about the initial microstate of the universe as a whole. And there are various widespread and and perennial sorts of puzzlement about how a hope like that can even seriously be entertained – puzzlements (that is) about how it is that the macrocondition of the universe 15 billion years ago\, all by itself\, can even imaginably be up to the job of explaining so much about the feel\, today and on earth\, of the passing of time. I want to try to alleviate those puzzlements here. I will begin with a number of very general observations – and then\, by way of illustration\, I will present a new and detailed analysis of how it is that a simple pendulum clock invariably arranges to turn its hands clockwise in the temporal direction that points away from the Big Bang.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Webinar: Building Capacity for Reserves to be Motus Wildlife Tracking Leaders
DESCRIPTION:The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is an open-source\, international network of community hosted radio-telemetry receivers and wildlife researchers designed to investigate a wide variety of wildlife movement questions. Volunteer partners host and operate receiving stations across the world that autonomously listen for flying migratory animals equipped with transmitters called nanotags. Researchers rely on the receivers for movement data for a diversity of tagged wildlife\, including birds\, bats\, and insects. Despite widespread interest in wildlife tracking and research within and beyond the Reserve system\, this technology has only been used sporadically at a few reserve sites to date.\n\nIn 2018\, the ACE Basin NERR received private funding to implement a Motus receiver station at partner State Park\, which sparked interest from potential collaborators. Since 2020\, a multi-reserve project led by the ACE Basin Reserve has held a series of workshops to provide guidance and assistance on siting\, construction\, installation\, and interpretation of Motus sites at participating reserves. In this webinar\, project lead Jessica Kinsella will share how this effort has created new partnerships and positioned the Reserve as a regional leader for the Motus initiative\, while enabling partners to increase their contribution to coastal bird research and engage their end users in coastal bird conservation and management.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Asymptotic Analysis of Deep Residual Networks and Convergence of Gradient Descent Methods
DESCRIPTION:Residual networks (ResNets) have displayed impressive results in pattern recognition and\, recently\, have garnered considerable theoretical interest due to a perceived link with neural ordinary differential equations (neural ODEs). This link relies on the convergence of network weights to a smooth function as the number of layers increases. We investigate the properties of weights trained by stochastic gradient descent and their scaling with network depth through detailed numerical experiments. We observe the existence of scaling regimes markedly different from those assumed in neural ODE literature. Depending on certain features of the network architecture\, such as the smoothness of the activation function\, we prove the existence of an alternative ODE limit\, a stochastic differential equation\, or neither of these. For each case\, we also derive the limit of the backpropagation dynamics and address its adaptiveness issue. These findings cast doubts on the validity of the neural ODE model as an adequate asymptotic description of deep ResNets and point to an alternative class of differential equations as a better description of the deep network limit.\n \nWhen the gradient descent method is applied to the training of ResNets\, we prove that it converges linearly to a global minimum if the network is sufficiently deep and the initialization is sufficiently small. In addition\, the global minimum found by the gradient descent method has finite quadratic variation without using any regularization in the training. This confirms existing empirical results that the gradient descent method enjoys an implicit regularization property and is capable of generalizing to unseen data.\n \nThis is based on joint work with Rama Cont (Oxford)\, Alain Rossier (Oxford)\, and Alain-Sam Cohen (InstaDeep).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Math Undergraduate Seminar: Power Sums of Primes in Arithmetic Progression
DESCRIPTION:How to approximate the sums of powers of primes is an interesting topic. Previous research proved that\, for k > -1\, the number of primes less than x^{k+1} can be well approximated by summing the k-th powers of all primes up to x. I extend this result to primes in arithmetic progressions: I prove that the number of primes p=n mod m less than x^{k+1} is asymptotic to the sum of k-th powers of all primes p= n mod m up to x. I also prove that the prime power sum approximation tends to be an underestimate for positive k and an overestimate for negative k\, and quantify for different values of k how well the approximation works for x between 10^4 and $10^8. In this seminar\, I will talk about the history of the prime number theorem and my findings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG GeomTop/Dyn. Classification of Horocycle Orbit Closures in Z-covers
DESCRIPTION:Horospherical group actions on homogeneous spaces are famously known to be extremely rigid. In finite volume homogeneous spaces\, it is a special case of Ratner’s theorems that all horospherical orbit closures are homogeneous. Rigidity further extends in rank-one to infinite volume but geometrically finite spaces. The geometrically infinite setting is far less understood.\n\nWe study Z-covers of compact hyperbolic surfaces and provide the first description of all possible horocycle orbit closures in this category. Surprisingly\, the topology and Hausdorff dimension of these non-homogeneous orbit closures delicately and discontinuously depends on the choice of a hyperbolic metric on the covered compact surface. Nevertheless\, some rigidity is preserved in the form of integer Hausdorff dimension of all orbit closures. Based on an ongoing series of works together with James Farre and Yair Minsky.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Weekly DCMB/CCMB Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCore regulatory transcription factors (CR TFs) orchestrate the placement of super enhancers (SEs) to activate transcription of cell-identity specifying gene networks and are critical in promoting cancer. We defined the core regulatory circuitry of fusion positive rhabdomyosarcoma (FP-RMS\, a cancer of childhood) in primary tumors and cell lines\, which includes PAX3-FOXO1 (P3F)\, MYOD1\, SOX8\, MYCN and others. To find chemical probes able to selectively inhibit CR TF transcription\, we screened the Structural Genomics Consortium epigenetic probe set by RNA-seq. We found that chemical probes along the acetylation-axis\, and not the methylation-axis\, are able to cause selective disruption of CR TF transcription. Inhibitors of HDACs (acetylation erasers)\, BRD4 (acetylation readers) and CBP/p300 (acetylation writers) were all able to selectively halt CR TF transcription. \nFor HDACs\, this raised a conundrum: why would too much histone acetylation\, an active chromatin mark\, stop transcription at CR TFs? ChIP-seq showed that CR TFs build SEs that have the largest quantities of histone acetylation and the enzymes that write acetylation (i.e.\, p300)\, yet paradoxically also harbor the highest amounts of the opposing histone deacetylases (HDACs). To investigate the architectural effects of disabling HDACs and causing hyper acetylation\, we developed Absolute Quantification of Architecture (AQuA) HiChIP\, revealing erosion of native SE contacts at CR TFs\, and extensive aberrant contacts. This did not cause an elongation defect\, but rather removed RNA Pol2 from core regulatory genetic elements and eliminated RNA-Pol2 phase condensates in 20 minutes. We further dissected the contribution of HDAC isoforms using a set of HDAC selective inhibitors\, finding HDAC1/2/3 are co-essential to CR transcription. \nUsing HAT inhibitors/degraders\, we discovered a profound dependence on CBP/p300 for clustering of Pol2 loops that connect P3F to its target genes. In the absence of CBP/p300\, Pol2 long range enhancer loops collapse\, Pol2 accumulates in CpG islands and fails to exit the gene body. These results reveal a potential novel axis for therapeutic interference with P3F in FP-RMS and clarify the molecular relationship of P3F and CBP/p300 in sustaining active Pol2 clusters essential for oncogenic transcription. \nIn multiple contexts\, we propose Pol2 Un-Loading Ratio (PULR) as a new key metric to quantify and explain the drug induced defects in CR TF transcription. Overall\, our data reveals a SE-specific need for balancing histone acetylation states to maintain SE architecture\, Pol2 clustering in 3D\, and CR TF transcription.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09\n\nShort bio:\nDr. Berkley Gryder is a chemist who retrained as a molecular biologist and computer scientist. He is passionate about understanding how cancer cells control their genes\, and developing new chemical strategies to stop cancer cell’s addiction to gene transcription. Along the way\, he has proposed paradigm shifts and surprises that are explaining old conundrums. Recognizing that the “right” answer to a tough question is often out of reach with current tools\, Dr. Gryder is always innovating techniques with an ultra-high level of spatial and temporal precision to study gene control/epigenetics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Politics of Desire in Higher Education—A public talk with Dr. D-L Stewart
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE TALK—from the speaker: \nToo often our work in higher education institutions - including our diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and justice efforts - are driven by and driven to meet externally focused outcomes. We use benchmark data to measure up to aspirational peers. We devise strategic plans with goals informed by consultants and\, sometimes\, research findings. However\, we rarely examine our own desires for the future of our work and of our academic communities. It is rare to talk about desire in the academy but drawing from the work of Eve Tuck\, Audre Lorde\, and adrienne maree brown\, we will engage the “politics of desire” as a tool for envisioning and strategizing for the transformation of our communities.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr. D-L Stewart is professor and chair of the Higher Education Department in the Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver. Over the course of his faculty career\, he has focused most intently on the history and philosophy of higher education and the institutional systems and structures that affect the experiences\, growth\, development\, and success of racially minoritized and queer and trans* students in historically white postsecondary institutions. Dr. Stewart examines these topics through intersectional\, critical\, and poststructural frameworks that interrogate the multiple manifestations of whiteness and settler colonialism in U.S. higher education. In addition to more than 150 invited and refereed presentations and over 90 journal publications and book chapters\, Dr. Stewart is also an author or editor of four books related to multicultural student services\, contexts and opportunities for LGBTQ+ students\, history of Black collegians in private liberal arts colleges\, and the use of critical frameworks in student development theorizing. Dr. Stewart has also received numerous awards for teaching\, research\, and service\, including being named a 2022 Senior Scholar Diplomate and receiving the 2021 Contribution to Knowledge Award from ACPA-College Student Educators International. Dr. Stewart was the 2021 president for the Association for the Study of Higher Education. In 2020\, Dr. Stewart founded Radical Insights Speaking\, Consulting\, and Training LLC whose mission is to transform\, initiate\, generate\, equip\, and reinvigorate (T.I.G.E.R.) leaders and organizations toward greater equity and justice.\n\nDOORS\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m. Event starts at 6:00 p.m.\n\n\nLGBT HISTORY MONTH\nFor more campus events marking LGBT History Month\, visit myumi.ch/lgbt-history-month.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:South Asian Film Series | *Shoebox* Screening with Filmmaker Faraz Ali
DESCRIPTION:CSAS will be launching their South Asian Film Series with *Shoebox* and its filmmaker Faraz Ali.\n \n“*Shoebox* is an exploration of the evolving urban landscape in India\, particularly through the lens of Allahabad's transformation\,” says Ali as he describes the film. “It encapsulates the struggle to preserve identity\, memory\, and heritage in the face of rapid development and change. As a filmmaker\, I've experienced the profound impact of such transitions firsthand\, having grown up in a small Indian town that eventually gave way to urbanization.\n \n“The human story around a single-screen theatre\, intertwined with the city's renaming and the backdrop of the Kumbh Mela\, reflects a universal narrative of how communities grapple with progress while honoring their history. As a director\, I believe that this film holds a mirror to the challenges many regions across South Asia face as they navigate the intricate balance between preserving cultural heritage and embracing modernity.\n \n“By showcasing *Shoebox* to the audience at the Center for South Asian Studies\, I hope to spark meaningful conversations about the multifaceted dimensions of development\, identity\, and the value of preserving cultural roots. I'm excited to contribute to the dialogue and offer a glimpse into the emotional journey that my protagonist undertakes\, searching for belonging amidst the changes in her hometown\,” adds Ali.\n\nAppetizers and drinks from Everest Sherpa Restaurant (https://www.everestsherparestaurant.com/) will be served between 6:30 and 7:30pm. \n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\n*Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education. *
