SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Sentimental Archive: Remembering Nubia through Salvage Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases select photographs from The American University in Cairo’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library taken by the renowned Egyptian photographer Abd al-Fattah Eid as well as by the Cairo-born Swiss artist Margo Veillon.\n\nIn 1964\, the construction of the Aswan High Dam displaced Nubians from their ancestral villages along the banks of the Nile in Egypt. In the years immediately preceding the dam’s construction\, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \n\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or “Old Nubia” the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years\, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond\, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive\, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time\, space\, and circumstance. \n\nThis selection of photographs includes persons\, places\, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline\, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\n\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll\, assistant professor of anthropology\, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid\, doctoral student in anthropology\, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\n\nFor a deeper dive\, visit the companion exhibit\, Narrating Nubia\, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. It delves into the archaeological\, anthropological\, and community narratives of both ancient and modern-day Nubia spanning Egypt and Sudan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CMENAS Fall 2023 Colloquium Series Lecture: No Such Thing as ‘Soft Power’ – How Gulf States are Using Sport to Gain Supremacy on the World Stage
DESCRIPTION:Gulf states are now one of the most powerful forces in world football. First\, in 2008\, the United Arab Emirates took control of Manchester City F.C. and transformed the club into a multiple English\, and now European champion\, the key asset in a group of twelve clubs in five continents\; then Qatar\, having controversially won the right to host the 2022 World Cup\, purchased French giant Paris Saint-Germain F.C. (PSG)\; and now\, Saudi Arabia is on the way to eclipse both\, having spent hundreds of millions recruiting some of the sport's most famous names for its state-run and owned national league and clubs\; and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)\, enjoying a uniquely close relationship with world governing body FIFA\, is now seen as favorite to hold the 2034 World Cup. The acquisition of 'soft power' is routinely presented as the key reason behind these countries' unprecedented investment in football\, as football enables them to burnish/re-define their global image and 'sportswash' their dreadful human rights record. While this is true\, this doesn't tell the whole story. All three countries have applied different strategies and have distinct objectives\, all of them geo-political rather than reputational in nature. What unites all three projects is not 'soft power'\, but power itself\, on a regional but also\, in the case of Saudi Arabia\, global level. There is nothing 'soft' about this\, even if the rest of the world has so far failed to recognize this essential difference.\n\nFootball writer\, broadcaster\, and investigative journalist Philippe Auclair has been France Football's England correspondent since 1999. He is the England football correspondent for Eurosport.fr\, Europe 1\, Radio France Internationale\, and Swiss national radio RTS\, and a regular contributor to the Guardian Football Weekly (UK) podcast\, for which he specializes in governance issues and the geopolitical dimension of football. His investigations have been published by Josimar magazine and on the websites of the Arabic and African services of the BBC. His biography of Eric Cantona\, *The Rebel Who Would Be King*\, was voted 'Football Book of the Year' in both France and the UK\, and he won France's 'Scoop Of The Year' award for his investigation into the 'Qatargate' dossier\, to which he also devoted two books\, published in France and Belgium in 2015 and 2022. He has recently been investigating the sports betting industry as part of a multinational team that won the Investigative Journalism For Europe's Impact Award in 2023.\n \n He recently published on the topic\, which he will expand on in his lecture. Please see: https://josimarfootball.com/2023/05/18/boardroom-blitz/\n \n This event is part of the CMENAS Fall Colloquium 2023: “The MENA world after a MENA World Cup” 555 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor.\n \n Colloquium questions: cmenas@umich.edu\n \n This series is funded in part by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS) U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) grant.\n \n To register\, go to https://myumi.ch/8eA8n.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: The 2021 Child Tax Credit\, housing affordability\, and the living arrangements of families with low incomes
DESCRIPTION:\"The 2021 Child Tax Credit\, housing affordability\, and the living arrangements of families with low incomes.\" \n\nAccess to safe and stable housing is important for child and adult wellbeing. Yet many low-income households face severe challenges in maintaining stable housing. In this paper we examine the impact of the 2021 temporary expansion to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) on the living arrangements and housing affordability of families with low incomes. We employ a parameterized difference-in-differences method and use national data from a sample of parents who are receiving\, or recently received\, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (N~20\,500). We find that the monthly CTC is associated with a higher likelihood that parents reported a change in their living arrangements as well as reduced household size\, an effect largely driven by fewer mothers living with a partner (and not a reduction in doubling up). We also find that the credit reduced parents’ likelihood of reporting potential moves due to difficulties affording rent/mortgages as well as the amount and incidence of back-owed rent/mortgages. We find some differences in effects by race and ethnicity and income. Our findings illustrate how the monthly credit allowed parents to gain residential independence from partners\, reduce the number of people residing in their household\, and reduce their past-due rent/mortgage.\n\nNatasha Pilkauskas is an Associate Professor of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Pilkauskas’ research considers how demographic\, social safety net\, and economic shifts in the U.S. affect low-income families with children. Specifically\, her work examines children’s shared living arrangements\, economic insecurity among vulnerable populations\, and the effects of cash transfers\, such as tax credits\, on low-income families. Much of Pilkauskas’ research focuses on early childhood\, a time when poverty and instability are known to have long-lasting detrimental effects on children’s health and development\, and when social policies have been shown to have some of the strongest impacts on improving children’s life chances. Pilkauskas holds a Ph.D. in social welfare policy from Columbia University\, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University and a B.A in Economics and Sociology from Northwestern University.\n\nJoin us in person at ISR (Thompson Street) Room 1430.\n\nOr online: Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95418610585?pwd=Z0cvdkF1T0R2cG1lRDEvVmlnbVdlZz09\n\nMeeting ID: 954 1861 0585\nPasscode: 818420\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,95418610585# US (Washington DC)\n+13092053325\,\,95418610585# US

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Afterthought: Remembering a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition: \nIn “Half-Built House\,” Brazilian-American artist Laura Taylor grieves the loss of her childhood friend Tina to COVID. When COVID took Tina’s life\, Taylor started ordering identical versions of their childhood games and toys on eBay. As she assembled these objects\, Taylor recalled a memory of climbing with Tina through the skeletal frameworks of unfinished houses in the 1970s. Late at night\, the girls would pick their way through floorless rooms and speculate about their future inhabitants. In this spirit of imaginative experimentation\, Taylor began taking apart her eBay acquisitions. Gathering\, breaking\, sawing\, splicing\, painting\, gluing\, layering\, and reassembling these toys became\, for her\, a way to probe the complicated nature of a lost friendship and to explore the multidimensional nature of grief. Ultimately\, Taylor built the framework of an unfinished house to evoke those she once explored with Tina. Taylor describes the house as a “container for grief.” \n\nSeptember 28 - October 27 \nOpening & Reception: September 28\, 1-3pm \nGalleryDAAS \n\nAbout this series of events: \nArt & Resistance Fall 2023 Theme Semester Programming \nSponsored by Arts Initiative\, UMMA\, American Culture\, Latina/o Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television and Media & the Museum Studies Program \nPresented by Charlotte Juergens\, 2nd year Ph.D. student in American Culture \nhttp://bit.ly/UMafterthought

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | X-Ray -- Cosmic Shear Cross-Correlations: First Detection and Constraints on Baryonic Effects
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, I will discuss the recent discovery of the cross-correlation between cosmic shear and the diffuse X-ray background. This correlation is extremely important for cosmological and astrophysical analyses\, as it enables us to impose precise constraints on critical physical parameters governing the impact of baryonic effects on the matter power spectrum. Specifically\, we obtain strong bounds for the parameter describing the average mass of haloes at which feedback mechanisms have expelled half of their gas content\, \log_{10}(M_c/M_\odot). I will explain the data sets used\, the theoretical models considered and conclude with our results and steps for future analyses.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT seminar: Bipartite spherical spin glass at critical temperature
DESCRIPTION:The spherical Sherrington--Kirkpatrick (SSK) model and its bipartite analog both exhibit the phenomenon that their free energy fluctuations are asymptotically Gaussian at high temperature but asymptotically Tracy--Widom at low temperature. This was proved in two papers by Baik and Lee\, for all non-critical temperatures. The case of critical temperature was recently computed for the SSK model in two separate papers\, one by Landon and the other by Johnstone\, Klochkov\, Onatski and Pavlyshyn. In this talk\, we will discuss the critical temperature result for the bipartite SSK model. In particular\, we study the free energy fluctuations when the temperature is in a window of size $n^{-1/3}\sqrt{\log n}$ around the critical temperature\, the same window for the SSK model. Within this transitional window\, the asymptotic fluctuations of the free energy are the sum of independent Gaussian and Tracy--Widom random variables. \n\nThe talk is based on joint work with Elizabeth Collins-Woodfin.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Martha and the Manufacture and Maintenance of Madness: Distraction\, Anxiety\, Enslavement\, Gender\, and the Normative Bodymind
DESCRIPTION:The story of Mary and Martha is a text of terror for women and for the mentally disabled and neurodiverse. Martha\, and her\, “worry and distraction” have been villainized by a long interpretive tradition\, making her out to be the poster child for the cares of the material world. Mary has been championed as the model of prayer\, spirituality\, contemplation\, monastic life\, and even as the earthly embodiment of heavenly life. Mary and Martha have been put in a competition\, and Martha always loses. Much of the recent Feminist and Womanist scholarly conversation around Mary and Martha in Luke 10 has turned upon the nature of Martha’s work\, largely under the influence of the history of interpretation of the passage. The crux of the passage\, however\, hinges not on whether Martha was in the kitchen or doing ministry\, but on her labor dispute and Jesus’ response. In order to undermine that millennia old tradition of using the disabled body as something to “think with\,” I will contextualize Martha’s “worry and distraction” with respect to her servile labor\, and the need to manage “many things.” I will draw upon ancient medical literature\, philosophical texts\, and narratives that describe worried\, effeminate and enslaved bodies in order to demonstrate the ties between the female body\, worry\, anxiety\, and enslaved labor in antiquity. In antiquity Martha’s worry was the expected consequence of the labor that was assigned to women and enslaved persons. In this regard Luke’s gospel is using Martha’s body to “think with\,” but Martha’s worry is not a spiritual deficit\, it is the disability that is manufactured by unjust labor structures that purposefully assign worry to some bodies and not others.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RNA Innovation Seminar: Susan Gottesman\, NIH/NCI
DESCRIPTION:HYBRID SEMINAR:\nIn-person: BSRB\, ABC Seminar Rooms\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5qQ85uIVQMSA6E-7ViNEQw\n\nAbstract: Bacteria use small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) and the RNA chaperone Hfq to regulate mRNA translation and stability\, akin to miRNAs and the RISC complex in eukaryotes. The approaches to defining bacterial sRNAs and their targets have dramatically improved since the screens that first identified many of them over 20 years ago. Current tools provide a global view of Hfq-binding RNAs that suggests increasingly interwoven regulatory networks\, helping cell respond appropriately to stress and host interactions. On-switches for sRNAs are primarily at the level of transcription\; when transcription ceases\, most of the sRNAs are used stoichiometrically\, being degraded as they are used\, providing an effective Off-switch for sRNA regulation. We have used genetic screens to identify novel regulators of both Hfq and the sRNAs. One of these\, HqbA\, binds directly to the distal face of Hfq\, and competes with weakly binding RNAs for association with Hfq\, suggesting it is a new quality control regulator for Hfq. Data suggests that this is a bifunctional protein\, directly regulating Hfq by protein-protein interaction and regulating other processes independently of Hfq. HqbA\, along with other factors\, help to ensure appropriate hierarchy of sRNA function.\n\n\nKeywords: mRNA translation\; RNAse E\; Escherichia coli.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker Series. Count me in: how quantification shapes knowledge politics in contemporary higher education
DESCRIPTION:How is knowledge organized in higher education? In recent decades\, the adoption of market-oriented logics within institutions of research and higher education had notable implications on how the pursuit of knowledge is shaped and rewarded. As documented by a number of authors\, for example\, the \"commercialization of science\" had consequences on the quality of knowledge produced in particular research setting. Backed by distinct cultures of quantification and tied to concrete devices measurement and commensuration\, the broader audit cultures that embed modern research effectively shape what we know and can know. In this talk\, I explore instances of these cultures by looking into the role of research assessments and budget models as mechanisms for shaping and regulating how universities structure their instructional and research operations. Focusing on recent models of research evaluation and budgeting\, this talk shows how several techniques of quantification become important for implementing change in higher education with long-lasting consequences for the distribution of knowledge\, the organization of the sciences\, and the structure of the public sphere.\n\nJuan Pablo Pardo-Guerra is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of California\, San Diego and Director of the Latin American Studies Program. He is author of Automating Finance: Infrastructures\, Engineers\, and the Making of Electronic Markets (2019)\, and The Quantified Scholar: How Research Evaluations Transformed the British Social Sciences (2022).\n\nCosponsors: Center for Ethics\, Society & Computing\, ISR\, Department of Sociology

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Efficiency-Equity Tradeoff of the Corporate Income Tax: Evidence from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the effects of an historically large federal corporate income tax cut on U.S. firms and workers\, leveraging quasi-experimental policy variation from the 2017 law known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. To identify causal effects\, we use employer-employee matched federal tax records and an event study design comparing similarly-sized firms in the same industry that faced divergent tax changes due to their pre-existing legal status. Reductions in marginal income tax rates cause increases in sales\, profits\, investment\, and employment\, with responses driven by firms in capital-intensive industries. Workers’ earnings gains are concentrated in executive pay and in the top 10% of the within-firm income distribution\, while workers in the bottom 90% of the distribution see no change in earnings. Interpreted through the lens of a stylized model\, our estimates imply that a $1 marginal reduction in corporate tax revenue generates an additional $0.10 in output\, with 78% of gains flowing to the top 10% of the income distribution.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Rational points on del Pezzo surfaces of low degree
DESCRIPTION:In joint work with Jakob Glas\, we prove upper bounds for the number of rational points on del Pezzo surfaces of degree ≤5 using a hyperplane section argument. Our work is valid over all global fields excluding characteristic 2 and 3. Over number fields our results are conditional on a hypothesis concerning the growth of the rank of elliptic curves in terms of the conductor. En passant we also produce new (unconditional) upper bounds for del Pezzo surfaces of degree five which admit a conic bundle structure.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: Symmetries of Fano varieties
DESCRIPTION:Prokhorov and Shramov proved that the BAB conjecture (which Birkar later proved) implies the uniform Jordan property for automorphism groups of complex Fano varieties of fixed dimension. This property in particular gives an upper bound on the size of semi-simple groups (i.e. those with no non-trivial normal abelian subgroups) acting faithfully on n-dimensional complex Fano varieties\, and this bound only depends on n. In this talk\, we investigate the consequences of an action by a particular semi-simple group: the symmetric group. This work is joint with Louis Esser and Joaquín Moraga.

SUMMARY:Performance:Adrian Legg
DESCRIPTION:“The best acoustic guitar player I’ve ever heard”—Joe Satriani\n\nGuitar gods in training\, take notice. Voted Guitarist of the Decade by Guitarist magazine and Best Acoustic Fingerstylist four years in a row by readers of Guitar Player\, Adrian Legg dazzles audiences with an unclassifiable mixture of country\, jazz\, folk\, rock\, and classical styles. For all his rapid-fire playing\, though\, Adrian never loses sight of melodies and their power to move us. And on top of that\, he's a tall tale teller of the first order\, with a dry sense of humor that would be reason enough in itself to come to one of his concerts. Says Newsday: \"Unlike Richard Thompson or Robert Fripp\, in whose league he belongs\, Legg seems never to have been seduced by rock. But unlike Leo Kottke or Ry Cooder\, whom he also occasionally resembles\, Adrian Legg is an adventurer\, not an archivist.\" He is\, quite simply\, one of the greatest guitarists in the world\, and perhaps the very least heralded among that group.\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4271/4272 for more detail.
