It centers on the titular \u201cmanga map\u201d, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore, history, architecture, flora\/fauna, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction, and how that plays with the definition of a \u201cmap.\u201d\r\n\r\nAlongside the exhibit, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse, where the map will be transcribed\/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. Over the past sixty years, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time, space, and circumstance. \r\n\r\nThis selection of photographs includes persons, places, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Bondarenko\u2019s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko\u2019s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova\u2019s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline, red thread connects these projects, weaving through clay and fabric, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on \u201cArts and Resistance.\u201d\r\n\r\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist, a native of Ukraine, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition, and the \u201cStrictly Functional Pottery National Show\u201d in 2021 and 2022, and, most recently, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\r\n\r\nArtist website: https:\/\/www.ibondceramics.com\/\r\n\r\nKatya Lisova is an artist, designer, and art historian. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700), many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However, as the pages on display attest, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\r\n\r\nThe word \u201cIllumination,\u201d from the Latin illuminare, \u201cto enlighten or to illuminate,\u201d refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece, or first page of text, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter, and even miniatures, that is, scenes with an independent narrative. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to, and alternative to, patriarchal, capitalist, production-based, and seemingly rational, useful, logical systems. \r\n\u201c!!!techn010ffspring!!!\u201d is open for viewing M-F, 9am-4pm or by appointment. Jose aims at providing a collaborative approach to care utilizing strength-based approaches to help clients reach their self-actualization, resilience, and healing. \r\nMoreover, Jose is a volunteer clinical supervisor and clinician for Refugee Health Alliance, an organization that provides mental health services to immigrants at the border; a mentor in the Undocu-Professionals Mentorship Program; a contracted clinical supervisor for Redwood City School District; and a clinical supervisor and group facilitator for Immigrants Rising. In this talk, she will present data that quantifies the disagreement between chromosomal and self-reported sex and identifies potential reasons for discordance using data from the UK Biobank. She and coauthors show that among approximately 200 individuals with sex discordance, 71% of discordances were explained by intersex traits or transgender identity. These findings imply that health and clinical researchers have a unique opportunity to advance the rigor of scientific research as well as the health and well-being of transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people, who have long been excluded from and overlooked in clinical and survey research.\r\n\r\n\r\nKate Duchowny\u00a0(she\/her) is a Research Assistant Professor in the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. This particle plays a unique role in fundamental physics. It gives all of the known elementary particles, including itself, their masses. While we now have a strong evidence that the Higgs field is indeed the unique source of mass for the known elementary particles, the next step is to search for new interactions that could also explain why the Higgs field has the properties required by the Standard Model of particle physics. We have no clear roadmap to this new theory but the Higgs boson plays a crucial role in this quest. The goal of a next-generation e+e- collider is to carry out precision measurements to per-cent level of the Higgs boson properties that are not accessible at the LHC and HL-LHC. In this talk we present the study of a new concept for a high gradient, high power accelerator, the Cool Copper Collider (C^3), that could provide a route to precision Higgs physics with a compact footprint. It is a revolution moving us from alchemy to chemistry and one that is bringing order to chaos and laying the path from science to technology \u2013 in this case, policy applications. This emerging science is grounded in a formal general theory that recognizes that our psychology and behavior are governed by millions of years of genetic evolution, our genetic inheritance as an African ape; thousands of years of cultural evolution, our cultural inheritance a product of path dependencies and cultural adaptations in the various ecologies we\u2019ve thrived in across the planet; and a short lifetime of experience, tuning these other two lines of informational inheritance. This revolution has 3 parts: (1) general and specific, ultimate and proximate formal theories that make falsifiable predictions for universal and culturally specific psychology and behavior; (2) new tools for measuring and analyzing psychology and culture through large datasets, field and lab experiments; (3) real world tests using policy interventions, guided by the principle that if your theories don\u2019t work in the real world, they don\u2019t work at all. \r\n\r\nMichael Muthukrishna is Associate Professor of Economic Psychology and Affiliate in Developmental Economics and in Data Science at the London School of Economics (LSE), Technical Director of the Database of Religious History, and CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) program for Boundaries, Membership, and Belonging. His research focuses on human biological and cultural evolution and how the \u201ctheory of human behavior\u201d that emerges from this research can be used to improve innovation, reduce corruption, and increase cross-cultural cooperation. His work has been featured in a variety of news outlets including CNN, BBC, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, Scientific American, Nature News, and Science News. He advises both governments and organizations and has won several awards for his research.
