In the years immediately preceding the dam\u2019s construction, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \r\n\r\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or \u201cOld Nubia\u201d the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time, space, and circumstance. \r\n\r\nThis selection of photographs includes persons, places, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\r\n\r\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll, assistant professor of anthropology, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid, doctoral student in anthropology, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\r\n\r\nFor a deeper dive, visit the companion exhibit, Narrating Nubia, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. Bondarenko\u2019s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko\u2019s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova\u2019s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline, red thread connects these projects, weaving through clay and fabric, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on \u201cArts and Resistance.\u201d\r\n\r\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist, a native of Ukraine, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Geometric nonlinearities make the structure\u2019s modal parameters a function of the deformed shape and, therefore, of the loading condition. Modal characterization of very flexible structures is challenging due to these nonlinearities and the very low natural frequencies (the fundamental mode is typically below 1 Hz). Therefore, testing practices that are well established and mature for traditional, relatively rigid aircraft need to be re-examined.\r\n\r\nGround vibration testing consists of conducting a series of experimental tests on an aircraft to identify its modal parameters (natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios). These parameters are then used as a reference for updating the aircraft\u2019s finite element model such that it is dynamically representative of the actual vehicle. This work proposes examining the conventional ground vibration testing and finite element model updating processes for very flexible aircraft and identifying the impact of flexibility and geometric nonlinearities on the process. The modified ground vibration testing and finite element model updating methodology are then applied to and verified on numerical models of very flexible test cases. Results are provided to showcase the applicability of the model updating process on the test cases, along with a discussion of the limitations and additional considerations required to enhance the process.\r\n\r\nBy properly characterizing the suspension or support system in the structure\u2019s numerical model, experimental results from various deformed conditions allow for recovering the structure's true modal parameters once the influence of the suspension is modeled, tuned, and removed from the finite element model. This ground vibration testing and finite element model updating methodology was demonstrated experimentally on a very flexible beam and validated on a very flexible aircraft. Drawing on a variety of leisure and entertainment experiences captured in period texts, this study will ask how the dramaturgical and performative characteristics of sightseeing experiences informed and shaped the aesthetic fascination with envisioning oneself as a beholder\/actor faced with a spectacle. By questioning some of the assumptions about the drastic shifts in landscape painting practices from the late Northern to the Southern Song, this talk attempts to explain the prevalence of the act of gazing and the Southern Song landscapes framing such viewers in primarily theatrical terms.\r\n \r\n Meng Zhao is a postdoctoral fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. She specializes in the art and visual culture of imperial China, with a focus on painting practices of the middle period and early modern times. Her current book project, \u201cRoaming, Gazing, Halting: Human Presence and Sensory Impression in Song Landscape Painting (1185-1279),\u201d investigates the related ways in which major Chinese landscapists from the end of the eleventh to the thirteenth century turned their attention to the portrayal of human presence, the intervention of which brings to the fore the multivalent mediating spaces that landscape as a pictorial subject can offer in Song dynasty artistic practices. In fact, of the 1.5 million faculty at degree-granting postsecondary institutions assessed in the Fall 2020, 73% of faculty were white; specifically 35 percent white female and 38 percent white male (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2021). This phenomenon remains consistent when considered in relation to college student populations (Davis & Fry, 2019).\r\n\r\nCollege students, especially those from minoritized backgrounds, have expressed a need for diversity in their faculty. More diverse faculty may allow these students to be \u201cseen\u201d, heard, and understood, which can have a positive impact on their retention and graduation rates (Curry, 2020). Antiferromagnets (AFMs) have zero net magnetization, so AFM domains are immune to perturbing magnetic field. This leads to the prospect of robust magnetic storage. However, this robustness also means that manipulating fully-compensated AFM order is extremely difficult. We report the surprising observation of helicity-dependent optical control of fully compensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in 2D even-layered MnBi2Te4, a topological Axion insulator no magnetization. We demonstrated helicity-dependent optical creation of AFM domain walls by double induction beams and the direct reversal of AFM domains by ultrafast pulses. The control and reversal of AFM domains and domain walls by light helicity have never been achieved in any fully-compensated AFM. To understand this optical control, we studied an AFM circular dichroism (CD) proportional to the AFM order, which only appears in reflection but is absent in transmission. We showed that the optical control and CD both arise from the optical Axion electrodynamics. The Axion induction provides the possibility to optically control a family of PT-symmetric AFMs such as Cr2O3, even-layered CrI3, and possibly pseudo-gap state in cuprates.\r\n\r\nReference: \r\nJ. Zahid Hasan. During his phd, Xu experimentally realized a wide range of new topological phases of matter, including the discovery of the Weyl semimetal in the TaAs class of material, which was selected as a top10 breakthrough in physics in 2015. In 2016, Xu moved to MIT Physics for postdoc under the supervision of Prof. Nuh Gedik. There, Xu pioneered in nonlinear optical studies of topological materials including photocurrents, nonlinear Hall and second-harmonic generation. Such disputes can tear down the social fabric that holds societies together, but they may also give rise to desired changes that repairs and strengthens that fabric. To understand the role of heritage in such processes represents a complex interdisciplinary challenge that affects how we will come to see the past, the political present, and ourselves tomorrow.
