SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manga no Ryokou: The “Manga Map” and A Journey Through the Art of Depiction in Japanese Cartography
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit examines the intersection between art\, narrative\, and geography within Japanese cartography. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. More information is available at the exhibit.\n\nBoth the exhibit and the Zooniverse project were created as a summer internship capstone project by Joel Liesenberg\, a dual-degree master’s student in International and Regional Studies focusing in Japanese studies and the School of Information focusing in digital curation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shadow and Light : Solidarity and Connection with Iraqi Academics
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit incorporates a selection of work from the Shadow and Light project\, an initiative memorializing Iraqi academics assassinated between 2003-2013\, a timeframe which roughly parallels the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \n\nParticipants from around the world — including Iraqis in diaspora — contributed photographs and personal statements responding to the loss of a particular Iraqi academic listed by the Spanish Campaign against the Occupation and for the Sovereignty of Iraq (La Campaña Estatal contra la Ocupación y por la Soberanía de Iraq / IraqSolidaridad 2005-2013). \n\nThe project emerges from a broader effort undertaken by Iraqis and allies to document the assault on Iraqi scholars\, intellectuals\, and cultural institutions which flared in the wake of the destruction and division wrought by the US-led invasion and occupation. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. The curators of the online exhibit\, 2023 Michigan Library Scholars Zainab Hakim and Serena Safawi\, hope to center surviving Iraqi artists as they explore their national and artistic identities and respond to the cycles of violence caused by the Iran-Iraq war\, sanctions\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Sentimental Archive: Remembering Nubia through Salvage Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases select photographs from The American University in Cairo’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library taken by the renowned Egyptian photographer Abd al-Fattah Eid as well as by the Cairo-born Swiss artist Margo Veillon.\n\nIn 1964\, the construction of the Aswan High Dam displaced Nubians from their ancestral villages along the banks of the Nile in Egypt. In the years immediately preceding the dam’s construction\, the American University in Cairo directed a large-scale project of salvage anthropology with funding from the Ford Foundation. \n\nThis endeavor yielded hundreds of photographs of al-nuba al-qadima or “Old Nubia” the term affectionately used by community members. Over the past sixty years\, Nubians have used these images to cultivate a collective memory of a lost homeland. From Aswan to Alexandria and beyond\, community members are salvaging their own stories from this anthropological archive\, reshaping it as a sentimental terrain of solidarity across time\, space\, and circumstance. \n\nThis selection of photographs includes persons\, places\, and practices as well as glimpses of the presence of the photographer and researchers. Both online and offline\, Egyptian Nubians continue to share and re-mediate these photos as they recall their historical displacement and revitalize their heritage for future generations.\n\nThe exhibit is curated by Yasmin Moll\, assistant professor of anthropology\, and coordinated by Nesrien Hamid\, doctoral student in anthropology\, with funding from the University of Michigan's Humanities Collaboratory.\n\nFor a deeper dive\, visit the companion exhibit\, Narrating Nubia\, at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. It delves into the archaeological\, anthropological\, and community narratives of both ancient and modern-day Nubia spanning Egypt and Sudan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Guardian Passage: The Power of Ukrainian Cultural Memory in the Face of War
DESCRIPTION:*Presented in association with UMS*.\n\nIn Guardian Passage\, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war\; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats\, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage\, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline\, red thread connects these projects\, weaving through clay and fabric\, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”\n\nIrina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist\, a native of Ukraine\, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health\, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows\, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition\, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022\, and\, most recently\, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.\n\nArtist website: https://www.ibondceramics.com/\n\nKatya Lisova is an artist\, designer\, and art historian. Born in Kyiv\, she is a graduate of the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk (2009) and the National Academy of Cultural and Artistic Leaders (2018). Since 2019 she has been teaching at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk. Her work is in the field of artistic textiles and digital graphics. She is also the art director of the “Ukrainian Unofficial” research project\, which compiles archives of Ukrainian unofficial art of the second half of the twentieth century.\n\nArtist website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196914550@N02/albums\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Digital Engrams
DESCRIPTION:The notion that our brains actually create memories first stored and then revisited has been contemplated since the time of Plato and Aristotle. These units of memory\, or engrams\, are poetic portals through which we time travel\, gaining hindsight and foresight\, more meaning and greater wisdom\, and hopes for a future less encumbered. Beyond reminiscences of technicolor sunsets\, perhaps memories are simply the brain's records of endless repetitions and familiar neural pathways.\n\nIn an era of iPhones\, Macbooks\, Instagram\, and Facebook\, everything that’s happened to us in recent memory is at our immediate disposal and made to look better than the original … every day of every year\, every meal of every trip\, every postcard destination. With constant 24/7 access to the newsreel of our own lives\, are we losing our innate ability to remember what matters in the process? \n\nIn Digital Engrams\, L.A. artist Gabriela Ruiz combines sound\, video\, light and sculpture to create unexpected environments that challenge our sensibilities. The installation considers how images function on and off the screen\, and how memories real and curated are the crux of personal and cultural identity. Who do we think we are in this life or the eternal life on the internet hereafter? \n\nRuiz’s spatial inquiries grapple with the potential erasure of the rituals of memorialization and the richness of material culture so important in her own Latinx heritage and to her sense of self.\n\n–Amanda Krugliak\, IH Arts Curator\n\nAbout the artist:\nGabriela Ruiz is a self-taught artist whose practice blends diverse forms of expression and media\, including sculpture\, video\, painting\, and apparel design. Her sculptures incorporate found objects and industrial materials\, such as thrift store furniture and insulation foam. Strongly influenced by growing up in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley to immigrant parents from Mexico\, Ruiz’s practice is a reflection of the DIY work ethic she was raised under\, the vibrancy of Mexican cultural and artistic traditions\, and her exposure to subculture and fantasy at a young age as a means to escape the realities of daily life.\n\nOne of L.A.’s rising young talents\, she presented her solo show Stream at the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2022\, part of the museum's Outburst project.\n\n*Gabriela Ruiz is the Jean Yokes Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities. This exhibition is part of LSA's fall 2023 Art & Resistance theme semester.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Holding Places Exhibition by Satchel Lee
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri\, 9 am-5 pm or by appointment: serrag@med.umich.edu\nBorn and raised in New York City\, Satchel Lee is a multi-media artist whose work can best be described as portraiture. Through collaborations with her immediate community\, and also using herself as a subject\, Lee draws inspiration from the quotidian\, creating offbeat images that aim to preserve this moment in time\, (re) examine memories (especially those clouded by confusion) all the while asking questions around identity and existence.\n\nLee holds a BFA from the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Photography at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.\n\nIn Lee’s photographic exploration\, she investigates the profound connection between places and structures and the echoes of trauma that inhabit them. “Holding Places” is an exhibition that immerses viewers into a visual narrative\, inviting them to witness the power of space as holders and conduits for personal memory.\n\nBy reconstructing these places by hand in model scale and rendering them not as they were\, but how she experienced them\, she is able to navigate intimate details and hidden narratives that exist within them. The process of crafting these miniatures becomes a meditative contemplation\, giving Lee time to sit and reflect on these past events.\n\nThrough Lee’s lens\, they capture the visual manifestations of the ghosts of the past. The photographs offer glimpses into spaces where anguish\, conflict and distress have left their imprints\, sometimes visible\, sometimes buried beneath layers of time (and self preservation).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Seminar | Probing Quantum Black Hole Microstates
DESCRIPTION:It is now widely believed that black holes should be described by ordinary (though complicated) quantum systems. This can be made precise for supersymmetric (BPS) black holes in Anti de-Sitter space\, where the AdS/CFT correspondence may be used to reliably count black hole microstates. We will review this proposal for 4d superconformal field theories dual to AdS5 black holes and explain the challenges in characterizing these microstates directly in terms of gravitational variables. Surprisingly\, a gravitational path integral calculation predicts certain universal features of the spectrum\, including a large number of exactly degenerate states and a \"mass gap\" between the BPS and non-BPS states.\n\nIf BPS black holes are described by ordinary quantum systems\, we should be able to act with operators which probe the microstates. We find one such probe is a certain generalization of the supersymmetric Wilson line in 4d N=4 SYM\; holographically dual to a D-brane which wraps the horizon\, and further demonstrate a matching of these descriptions when the spacetime description is valid. In addition to detecting the familiar deconfinement transition in conformal gauge theories\, this provides an example of a system in which a black hole interacts with other degrees of freedom but has an exact microscopic description.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2023
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Fall 2023 Theme Semester: Arts &amp\; Resistance\, Stamps Gallery is partnering with the U‑M Arts Initiative to expand the 4th annual Respond/Resist/Rethink student art exhibition. All undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the Ann Arbor\, Dearborn\, or Flint U-M campuses in Fall 2023 are invited to apply to this juried exhibition that explores what can be done to create more just and equitable futures in the 21st Century and beyond.\n The 2023 exhibition will include art of a variety of mediums and will be displayed in four galleries across all three U-M campuses\, including Stamps Gallery (Central Campus\, Ann Arbor)\, Duderstadt Center Gallery (North Campus\, Ann Arbor)\, Riverbank Arts (Flint)\, and Stamelos Gallery (Dearborn). \nThe arts play a central role in shaping cultural and political narratives. Artists\, designers and creatives of diverse backgrounds have been at the forefront of social change by offering alternate models and ways of thinking\, making and creating that do not perpetuate dominant regimes. Creative processes have been used time and again to reveal under-told stories and to resist simple narratives. Regardless of one&#039\;s personal politics\, an artwork&#039\;s potential to change hearts and minds is urgent and necessary. \nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink invites students to leverage their creativity to (re)imagine what they can do to create a more just and equitable community in the spaces that they inhabit.\nThroughout the spring\, summer\, and fall of 2023\, U-M students submitted artworks through an open call process. A final list of artworks were chosen for the exhibition by a Selection Committee made up of U-M faculty\, staff\, and students. \n\nThe 2023 RRR Selection Committee members are: \nPedram Baldari\, Jim Cogswell\, Laura Cotton\, Nalani Duarte\, Adrienne Frank\, Benjamin Gaydos\, Kathryn Grabowski-Khairullah\, Quinn Hunter\, Ikalanni Jahi\, Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Joe Levickas\, Srimoyee Mitra\, Kathi Reister\, Chloe Schans\, and Grace Sirman. \nThe 2023 RRR Curatorial Committee members are: \nLaura Cotton\, Nalani Duarte\, Benjamin Gaydos\, Kathryn Grabowski-Khairullah\, Srimoyee Mitra\, and Kathi Reister. \nThe 2023 RRR Organizing Committee members are: Chris Audain\, Adrienne Frank\, Kathryn Grabowski-Khairullah\, Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Joe Levickas\, Srimoyee Mitra\, and Joe Rohrer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Blessings of the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:The Blessings of the Mystery examines themes of socio-economic\, environmental activism\, encounters between history and memory\, Indigenous rights\, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition examines the Amistad Dam in Del Rio\, the largest dam in Rio Grande that is jointly managed by the United States and Mexico and other contested sites in the region to unravel layered histories\, connections\, and tensions present in West Texas through film\, sculpture\, installation\, collage\, and drawing. \nThe experimental documentary film Teaching of the Hands is the center point of the exhibition - as it combines oral histories\, reenactments\, and archival footage to narrate a complex history of colonization\, migration\, and ecological precarity\, Told from the perspective of Juan Mancias\, Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, scenes from the present day are woven together with those from 4\,000 years in the past to investigate the transformation of Somi Se’k* by way of industry\, infrastructure\, and private property. \nEmerging from the research to create the film\, the exhibition includes an immersive installation of surveying flags and tools\, series of drawings and collages\, and a collection of original watercolors from the 1930s by artists and amateur archaeologists Forrest and Lula Kirkland that depict the ancient rock art of the Lower Pecos\,that expand on concepts in The Teachings of the Hands. The watercolors\, rarely seen plein air paintings\, are on loan from the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas\, and document the original forms and vibrant colors of murals that were still visible in the 1930s before flooding\, erosion\, and human interaction damaged or destroyed them. This exhibition has been shown in various iterations at Ballroom Marfa\, the University of Texas at Austin\, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and will be shown in Michigan and the midwest for the first time. The Blessings of the Mystery brings together an expansive body of work that sheds light on vital histories\, living memories and Indigenous knowledge-systems embedded within the land well before the colonial boundaries between Mexico and the US were established - advocating for environmental justice and recognition of Indigenous rights and cosmologies.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. To See and Write Vietnam: Polish Socialist Travelogues and Documentary Photography
DESCRIPTION:Literature and documentary photography on decolonization and the postcolonial period played an essential role in forging global socialist connections\, a sense of connectivity\, and in shaping grassroots imaginaries of socialist anti-colonialism. These discursive moorings brought closer to the audiences in Eastern Europe the far-away conflicts and developments that came with decolonization and life amid war in Southeast Asia. As part of the then-newly established political contacts between Poland and Vietnam\, Polish professionals were delegated to Vietnam\, leading to a series of books\, memoirs\, and reportages covering the situation on the ground in Vietnam. In my talk I will analyze the largely forgotten travelogues and documentary photographs that were published in state-socialist Poland by journalists and diplomats who had spent time in Vietnam amid and\, subsequently\, after unification. This material underlines how literary works and documentary photography dealing with cultural and societal transformation have the power to reveal\, obscure\, and construct the perception of national liberation struggles. \nRather than negatively casting the work by Monika Warneńska and Jerzy Chociłowski as mere socialist propaganda or treating it as “purely” documentary\, my talk will unpack how the postcolonial period—especially after the Second Indochina War—was narrated and understood in these publications and photographs. Vacillating between different genres and political commitments\, the travelogues and documentary photography point to shifting boundaries of strongly context-dependent knowledge production. Chronicling prolonged wartime violence and hardship as well as the challenges that came with postcolonial restructuring and social upheaval\, this discursive production around the war and post-war period in Vietnam used the power of literary narrative to humanize and translate to another context the experience of a seemingly perennial war without victimizing Vietnamese society. \nThe talk will also address how literary and visual representations and misrepresentations contribute to or undermine global socialist awareness of decolonization and postcolonialism—whether in line with or against the intentions of the authors and their political sponsors. Merging empathy and political rationale\, the travelogues and documentary photographs I discuss warrant asking: Were these overtly political yet empathetic accounts immune to an Orientalizing gaze and framing? Does the empathy towards war-torn Vietnamese society\, seemingly based in an ideal of socialist brotherhood\, suffice as a tool for self-validation and motivation? How exactly did the Vietnamese version of the story come to matter in these representations?\n\nThục Linh Nguyễn Vũ is a German Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) at Harvard University and a postdoctoral fellow at the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET) at the University of Vienna. Linh is a cultural historian with a strong interest in interdisciplinary approaches. She is currently working on two books manuscripts: one on the cultural history of everyday life and of political mobilization in a dissident milieu in socialist Poland\, and a second one on contacts between Poland and Vietnam after 1955. Linh has published in *Cahiers du Monde Russe\, East European Politics and Society\,* and *History Workshop Journal\,* as well as in non-scholarly outlets such as TAZ and krytykapolityczna.pl.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/Resist/Rethink
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Fall 2023 Theme Semester: Arts & Resistance and the U‑M Arts Initiative. The 2023 Respond/Resist/Rethink exhibition will include art of a variety of mediums and will be displayed in four galleries across all three U‑M campuses\, including Stamps Gallery (Central Campus\, Ann Arbor)\, Duderstadt Center Gallery (North Campus\, Ann Arbor)\, Riverbank Arts (Flint)\, and Stamelos Gallery (Dearborn).\n\nThe arts play a central role in shaping cultural and political narratives. Artists\, designers and creatives of diverse backgrounds have been at the forefront of social change. Creative processes have been used time and again to reveal under-told stories and to resist simple narratives. Regardless of one’s personal politics\, an artwork’s potential to change hearts and minds is urgent and necessary. Respond/Resist/Rethink invites students to leverage their creativity to (re)imagine what they can do to create a more just and equitable community in the spaces that they inhabit.\n\nNote: The Duderstadt Center will close slightly earlier\, on Dec 1.\nDuderstadt Center Gallery Hours: Noon-6pm Tues-Fri\, Noon-6pm Sunday

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISD Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Why has it become more difficult for recent families to match the levels of wealth seen in previous generations? To answer this question\, Daumler uses the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to estimate the total difference in net worth between two cohorts of American adults who started accumulating wealth in the 1980s and the 2000s\, respectively. Using a decomposition approach that he developed\, Daumler estimates the role of population changes to fertility\, marriage\, and racial/ethnic inequalities. He concludes by estimating how much of these historical changes are driven by differences in the accumulation of housing wealth and other components of family wealth.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: Infinitary interpretations and structurability
DESCRIPTION:We'll pick up where we left off\, discussing the connections between Borel spaces of countable structures and the infinitary logic Lω1ω. The Lopez-Escobar theorem says that a class of countable structures is isomorphism-invariant & Borel iff it's axiomatizable by an Lω1ω-sentence. What about ≅-equivariant Borel maps? These correspond to \"Lω1ω-interpretations\"\, which can be thought of as recipes for constructing different types of structures from each other. We'll discuss the space of infinitary theories ordered by interpretability. Then we'll describe the notion of 'structurability'\, through which we can see that many constructions in the theory of countable Borel equivalence relations (CBERs) are naturally phrased in terms of interpretations. Time permitting\, we'll describe a close correspondence between the set of theories (ordered by interpretability) and the set of CBERs (ordered by class-bijective Borel homomorphisms).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Integrating Physics and Engineering for Fusion Reactor Design\, Assessment\, and Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nRemarkable advances have been made in science and technology for magnetic fusion energy\, leading to construction of new devices that aim to demonstrate net energy gain. However\, significant technical challenges must be overcome to reach the year-long operation timescales required for a power plant. This talk will focus on the leading concept\, the tokamak\, and look at next steps needed for 1) production and control of a sustained fusion plasma\, 2) development of materials that can withstand the extreme fusion environment\, and 3) harnessing fusion power. Sophisticated integrated modeling tools are enabling tightly coupled plasma\, nuclear\, and engineering predictive modeling of the fusion core\, first wall\, blanket\, magnets\, etc. Such ‘virtual test beds’ aim to shorten development time and guide design decisions to quickly arrive at innovative solutions that maximize the probability of meeting Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) goals and enable optimization to impact commercial viability and timely delivery of fusion power.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nCami Collins is a plasma physicist and section head in the Fusion Energy Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, where she is working to find a solution to create and sustain a burning plasma needed for an economical fusion energy pilot plant. Her specific research is in the experimental development of steady-state tokamak scenarios\, and in applying integrated physics and engineering computational tools for design and assessment of fusion reactors. Cami received her Ph.D. in 2013 from the U. of Wisconsin Madison\, where she received an American Physical Society Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for her work in laboratory plasma astrophysics. She completed a postdoc through the University of California Irvine at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility\, became a staff scientist at General Atomics in 2016 specializing in spectroscopy diagnostics and energetic particle physics\, and joined ORNL in 2020. Driven by a long-time passion for the success of fusion energy\, she has served in multiple fusion outreach and strategic planning activities\, including the APS-DPP Community Planning Process and the U.S. ITER Research Program.\n\nDr. Collins won the MIPSE Early Career Award 2023.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Testing Predictions about Type Ia Supernovae in the Near-Infrared
DESCRIPTION:Measurements of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) in the near-infrared (NIR) have been used both as an alternate path to cosmology as opposed to optical measurements but also as a method of constraining key systematics for the larger optical studies. With the DEHVILS sample\, one of the largest uniform NIR samples\, we check three key systematics: the reduction in Hubble residual scatter as compared to the optical\; the measurement of a ‘mass step’ or lack thereof and its implications\; and the ability to distinguish between various dust models by analyzing correlations between Hubble residuals in the NIR and optical. We produce accurate simulations of the DEHVILS sample and find that\, contrary to assumptions in the literature\, it is harder to differentiate between various dust models than previously understood\, and it is unclear how standard SNe Ia truly are in the NIR.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Associahedrons and Stringy Canonical Forms
DESCRIPTION:We construct the kinematic associahedron motivated by quantum field theory. We then construct a compactification for M_{0\,n}^{+} motivated by string theory and realize it as a curvy associahedron (worldsheet associahedron) and a positive geometry. Finally\, we introduce stringy integrals\, which on some limit determines the kinematic associahedron and its canonical function\, and on another limit gives a diffeomorphism between the interior of the kinematic associahedron and the worldsheet associahedron\, thus relating their canonical functions and canonical forms.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Quantum circuit and the hierarchy of many-body entanglement
DESCRIPTION:Zoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91055802072\nMeeting ID: 910 5580 2072\nPasscode: 309241\n\nEntanglement in many-body quantum systems is notoriously hard to characterize due to the exponentially many parameters involved to describe the state. On the other hand\, we are usually not interested in all the microscopic details of the entanglement pattern but only some of its global features. It turns out\, quantum circuits of different levels of complexity provide a useful way to establish a hierarchy among many-body entanglement structures. A circuit of a finite depth generates only short range entanglement which is in the same gapped phase as an unentangled product state. A linear depth circuit on the other hand can lead to chaos beyond thermal equilibrium. In this talk\, we discuss how to reach the interesting regime in between that contains nontrivial gapped orders. This is achieved using the Sequential Quantum Circuit — a circuit of linear depth but with each layer acting only on one subregion in the system. We discuss how the Sequential Quantum Circuit can be used to generate nontrivial gapped states with long range correlation or long range entanglement\, perform renormalization group transformation in foliated fracton order\, and create defect excitations inside the bulk of a higher dimensional topological state.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Freedom Dreaming New Worlds: a participatory theater workshop
DESCRIPTION:When we consider working toward social justice\, it's common to focus on what we don’t want: systemic racism\, sexual violence\, a police state. What about what we do want? Drawing on Robin D.G. Kelley’s Freedom Dreams\, and the exploration of “Latinx Freedom Dreams” in Dr. Sara Awartani’s Arts&Resistance theme course by the same name\, this workshop will invite participants to envision what those dreams actually feel like -- and what we can practice\, together and today -- to bring those dreams closer to our lived reality. We'll play with Theatre of the Oppressed and Creative Drama techniques and explore a host of strategies for participatory invitations that might move an audience. Then\, the group will devise (ie.\, collaboratively create) short participatory performance pieces about social issues or social movements that have material impact on them. At the end of the workshop\, we'll have all come a little bit closer to freedom.\n\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/PDHT4CPkqCnPicNe6\n\nKeene Theater

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar: Measuring F-singularities numerically
DESCRIPTION:We have previously seen several different classes of singularities defined using the Frobenius map. But within a class\, we sometimes want more fine-grained information. This is where numerical invariants come into play! In this talk\, we will discuss both the F-signature\, which measures \"how\" strongly F-regular a ring is\, and the (relative) F-rational signature\, which measures \"how\" F-rational a ring is. We will go over their key nice properties\, and do a comparison of the two definitions.\n\nThis is the second in a series of two talks.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title:\n\nThe evolutionary history\, selection\, and machine learning-based detection of archaic introgressed variants\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe discovery of Denisovans is one of the most exciting findings in human evolution in the past decade. The striking similarity between sequences of the high-altitude adaptation gene EPAS1 in Denisovans and modern Tibetans suggested adaptive introgression. However\, the time and geographic ranges where the adaptive introgression happened remain unknown. This talk consists of three studies that are related to archaic adaptive introgression. First\, I show that the ancestors of Tibetans experienced two pulses of Denisovan introgression\, and the positive selection on EPAS1 did not start until after the Last Glacial Maximum. Second\, I show that most commonly-used statistical methods for detecting adaptive introgression fail to consider a confounder from recessive deleterious mutations on the genome\, which can inflate their false positive rates especially in conserved genomic regions with low recombination rates. Lastly\, I introduce MaLAdapt – a machine learning method for detecting genome-wide adaptive introgression\, which reveals novel knowledge of how genomic variants from archaic humans facilitated modern human adaptations in worldwide populations.\n\nShort Bio:\n\nDr. Xinjun Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan\, and an affiliated faculty member at CCMB and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The Zhang Lab focuses on developing computational methods to address a series of questions related to how admixture and other population genetic processes shaped human genetic diversity. Dr. Zhang received her BS in Biology from Beijing Normal University\, and PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology from UC Davis. She completed her postdoctoral trainings at UCLA with Dr. Kirk Lohmueller (funded by a NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award) and at UC Merced with Dr. Emilia Huerta-Sanchez.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Panel | A Discussion on Disability Justice\, Human Rights\, and the Politics of Space
DESCRIPTION:Moderator: Robert Adams\, Associate Professor of Architecture at Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning\, Director of University of Michigan Initiative on Disability Studies\, Associate Professor of Art and Design at Stamps School of Art and Design.\n \n This in-person event is free and open to the public but registration is required if you intend to participate virtually. Once you’ve registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/zwA6Z\n \n Historically\, disability studies is anchored to the humanities\, which generates a tremendous volume of discourse on disability through activism and advocacy\, creative practice\, and justice-informed frameworks. However\, within the academy and society at large\, perceptions\, perspectives\, and approaches to disability are more volatile. Physicians tend to understand disability as a therapeutic object to be diagnosed\, ameliorated\, and cured. Engineers engage disability as a problem to be solved through technical means. Artists and designers work through disability to motivate a range of creative practices. Architects and urbanists leverage disability narratives around mobility and accessibility but often fail to accede to the demands of disabled people in terms of equity and inclusion in public life. Everyone appears well-intentioned but often intention becomes oppressive\, pathologizing\, and isolating. A civil understanding of human rights remains contested. This panel is convening as a form of repair across disciplinary divides\; in order\, hopefully\, to foster greater connection and\, perhaps empathy in the process of our collective work.\n \n Crystal Lee is an assistant professor in computational media and design at MIT with a joint appointment in the Schwarzman College of Computing and Comparative Media Studies / Writing. She works broadly on research related to ethical tech\, social media\, data visualization\, and disability. This research has been supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation\, Social Science Research Council\, and the MIT Programs for Digital Humanities. She is also a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University\, where she co-leads the Ethical Tech Working Group\, and a senior fellow at Mozilla. She graduated with high honors from Stanford University and completed her PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\n \n Lydia X. Z. Brown is a queer\, disabled\, and East Asian advocate\, organizer\, attorney\, strategist\, and writer. They are the Director of Public Policy at the National Disability Institute\, which works to advance economic opportunity and freedom for people with disabilities. Lydia is also the founding Executive Director of the Autistic People of Color Fund\, which advocates for disability\, racial\, and economic justice with a focus on building generative economies and just transition while providing mutual aid\, peer support\, and community-funded reparations. They bring nearly 15 years of experience as a committed advocate\, community organizer\, and policy expert at the nexus of disability rights and disability justice. Lydia has spoken\, facilitated\, and consulted internationally and throughout the U.S. on a range of topics related to disability rights and disability justice\, especially at the intersections of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality\, and has published in numerous scholarly and community publications. Their work addresses the deep interconnections between ableism and other forms of systemic discrimination\, marginalization\, and oppression\, and has often focused on interpersonal\, state\, and corporate violence\, deprivation\, and exploitation targeting disabled people at the margins of the margins. Lydia holds a lecturer appointment in the Women's and Gender Studies Program and the Disability Studies Program at Georgetown University\, as well as serving as Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator for the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Fellowship program at the Georgetown University Medical Center. They are also an adjunct professorial lecturer in American Studies in the Department of Critical Race\, Gender\, and Culture Studies at American University. Lydia serves as Vice Chair and Past President of the Disability Rights Bar Association and Disability Justice Committee representative on the National Lawyers Guild board. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Revisiting the Link between Electrification and Fertility: Evidence from the Early 20th Century United States
DESCRIPTION:The decline in fertility occurring throughout the first half of the 20th century in the United States and preceding the baby boom remains largely unexplored. This paper presents empirical and theoretical evidence linking this decline to the spread of electricity. Using data on early electrification efforts\, I empirically disentangle the two channels linking electrification and fertility: the introduction of time-saving appliances that reduce the time needed for child-rearing\; and the rise in female wages which raises the opportunity cost of childcare. I then use these empirical estimates to calibrate a model that features both channels and quantifies the aggregate impact of electrification on fertility. I find that electrification explains 4.6% of the overall fertility decline in 1900-1940 in the US\, and that the opportunity cost channel is preponderant in explaining this response by allowing young childless women to benefit from the labor market gains of electricity.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Van Eenam Seminar II: Computing Free Boundaries by Neural Networks and Simulations
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk discusses a numerical method for the computation of free boundaries when a stochastic representation is available. It is based on an algorithm which we call deep empirical risk minimization developed by E\, Han & Jentzen. Their approach applies generally to many stochastic optimal control problems. In the presence of free boundaries\, it has to be modified to account for training based on hitting times. In this talk\, I outline how this is achieved for the classical problems of optimal stopping or the obstacle problem\, and for the Stefan problem for the water-ice interfaces. For the Stefan problem\, we use the recent stochastic representations\, the notion of physical probabilistic solutions\, and level-sets parameterized by deep neural networks on the numerical side.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:K-12 Educators in the Crosshairs
DESCRIPTION:How do we equip K-12 educators to survive devastating attacks on the culture war frontlines? SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Robotics Pathways and Career Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Laksh Kumar Punith is a Research Investigator in the Neurobionics Lab at the University of Michigan’s Robotics Department. He holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (‘15)\, and a Ph.D. in Robotics from Georgia Institute of Technology (‘22). As a roboticist\, Dr. Punith has been fascinated by how animals move so much better than any robots we’ve ever built - all while having hardware that should make their job much harder - namely\, slower communication (i.e. neurons)\, state-dependent actuators (i.e. muscles) and squishy transmission (i.e. tendons).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science Café: Politics and Power in Your Morning Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Coffee production has a history as a colonial crop\, destructive to the environment. Can coffee support biodiversity and local farms? What if we teach farmers how to grow coffee sustainably? What if doing so means opposing mega-corporations\, or even advocating for political independence? Learn about new research and education efforts by two U-M scientists who are intent on revolutionizing coffee production to something sustainable that benefits local communities. John Vandermeer (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) and Ivette Perfecto (School for Environment and Sustainability) have worked with coffee production in Mexico\, and are currently working in Puerto Rico. Learn about the obstacles to this important work - this conversation may change the source of your morning brew! Bring your coffee questions.\n\n\n\nScience Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting. Hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.\; program 6:00-7:30 p.m. Seating is limited—come early.\n\nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rural Resilience: Stories of Hope and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public (refreshments served).\nREGISTER at https://closup.umich.edu/event/2023/rural-resilience-stories-hope-and-innovation\n\nWednesday\, November 15\, 2023\n6:00PM – 7:00PM\nGerald R. Ford School of Public Policy \nWeill Hall Betty Ford Classroom 1110\n735 S. SUMMARY:Performance:Search Engines | \"Asian futures\, without Asians\"
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for the online Zoom Webinar here: https://tinyurl.com/2btrxwmz\n\nPlease register for the physical meeting space at the University of Michigan’s Central Campus: https://myumi.ch/byx2x\n\n\"Asian futures\, without Asians\" is a multimedia presentation by artist and curator Astria Suparak\, which asks: “What does it mean when so many white filmmakers envision futures inflected by Asian culture\, but devoid of actual Asian people?”\n\nThe first iteration of \"Asian futures\, without Asians\" was an online performance commissioned by The Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts\, San Francisco\, as part of their Trinh T. Minh-ha season. The project has developed over a series of live performances made for the Zoom camera and for in-person\, with script\, imagery\, costuming\, and backdrops tailored to each arts institution and country in which it is presented. \n\nAs part of the inaugural season of the Digital Studies Institute and the DISCO Network’s Search Engines series\, Astria Suparak will present a new\, live multimedia performance edition of the project for the University of Michigan and for our broader community.\n\nPart critical analysis\, part reflective essay and sprinkled throughout with humor\, justified anger\, and informative morsels\, this hour-long illustrated lecture examines nearly 60 years of American science fiction cinema through the lens of Asian appropriation and whitewashing. Using a wide interpretation of “Asian” to reflect current and historical geopolitical trends and self-definitions (inclusive of East Asia\, Southeast Asia\, South Asia\, West Asia\, Central Asia\, North Africa\, and the Pacific Islands—the latter two of which are not Asia)\, this research-creation project examines how Asian cultures have been mixed and matched\, contrasted against\, and conflated with each other\, often creating a fungible “Asianness” in futuristic sci-fi.\n\nThe quick-paced performance lecture is interspersed with selected images and clips from dozens of futuristic movies and television shows\, as Suparak delivers anecdotes\, trivia\, and historical documents (including photographs\, advertisements\, and cultural artifacts) from the histories of film\, art\, architecture\, design\, fashion\, food\, and martial arts. Suparak discusses the implications of not only borrowing heavily from Asian cultures\, but decontextualizing and misrepresenting them\, while excluding Asian contributors.\n\nArtist Bio:\n\nAstria Suparak is an artist\, writer\, and curator based in Oakland\, California.\n\nHer cross-disciplinary projects address complex and urgent issues (like institutionalized racism\, feminisms and gender\, and colonialism) made accessible through a popular culture lens\, such as science fiction movies\, rock music\, and sports. Straddling creative and scholarly work\, the projects often take the form of publicly available tools and databases\, chronicling subcultures and omitted perspectives.\n\nOver the last year Suparak’s creative projects have been exhibited and performed at the Museum of Modern Art and the Ford Foundation Gallery in New York\; Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\; the Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis\; and as part of the For Freedoms billboard series. She has curated exhibitions\, screenings\, and performances for the Liverpool Biennial\; Museo Rufino Tamayo\, Mexico City\; The Kitchen\, Eyebeam\, and MoMA PS1\, in New York\; and Expo Chicago\, as well as for unconventional spaces\, such as roller-skating rinks\, sports bars\, and rock clubs. Suparak is the winner of the 2022 San Francisco Bay Area Artadia Award.\n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. This event will be a hybrid event with both a physical meeting space and an online meeting space.\n\nPlease register in advance for the online Zoom Webinar here: https://tinyurl.com/2btrxwmz\n\nPlease register for the physical meeting space at the University of Michigan’s Central Campus: https://myumi.ch/byx2x\n\nCART will be provided. The peaceful and neighborly existence of three families\, Polish\, Ukrainian\, and Jewish\, sharing a large house in the years preceding and post-war\, is shattered. It's beautiful in its small details of food and cutlery\, children's games\, and objects of the everyday life of the city of Stanislaviv. \n\nThank you to our generous event co-sponsor\, Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE). SUMMARY:Performance:Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, Fereydoun Farrokhzad was a significant cultural icon\, a sex symbol\, and a chart-topping pop singer whose music and television programs were heard and viewed by millions of Iranians. A decade later\, living in political exile in Germany\, he still performed to sold-out audiences in Europe. That changed on August 7\, 1992\, when he was found brutally murdered in his apartment in Bonn. Neighbors said his dogs had been barking for two nights.\n\nThe murder\, still unsolved\, serves as the starting point for this new work by British-Iranian theater maker Javaad Alipoor\, whose The Believers Are But Brothers was featured in the 2020 No Safety Net theater festival. Selected as one of The Guardian’s Top Theatre Shows of 2022\, Things Hidden “gleefully mashes up genres\, smashing together the quiet authority of the murder mystery podcast\, the intimacy of autobiographical storytelling\, and the visual spectacle of multimedia performance — while simultaneously deconstructing each of these forms.” (The Guardian)

SUMMARY:Performance:Delta 88
DESCRIPTION:Americana sounds with deep Michigan roots\n\nAnn Arbor’s own Delta 88 combines a variety of musical influences from the American palette to craft their own modernized version of that classic sound\, a plaintive take on alt-country akin to haunted mountain spirituals played through a distortion pedal. From wide channels of dynamic\, emotional arrangements to somber barroom ballads and anthemic battle cries\, Delta 88’s music blazes a trail through the Americana wilderness. The band has four studio albums under their belt\, with the most recent featuring production by Grammy Award-winning musician and producer Joe Henry. Delta 88’s music has been heard on stages throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe with the likes of bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley\, country star Emmylou Harris\, and singer-songwriter Buddy Miller\, among others. It’s been a while since we’ve had this durable Michigan band at The Ark\, so come and see what they’ve been up to musically!\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4257/4258 for more detail.
