The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \r\n\r\nThe collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krak\u00f3w. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Photography at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.\r\n\r\nIn Lee\u2019s photographic exploration, she investigates the profound connection between places and structures and the echoes of trauma that inhabit them. \u201cHolding Places\u201d is an exhibition that immerses viewers into a visual narrative, inviting them to witness the power of space as holders and conduits for personal memory.\r\n\r\nBy reconstructing these places by hand in model scale and rendering them not as they were, but how she experienced them, she is able to navigate intimate details and hidden narratives that exist within them. The process of crafting these miniatures becomes a meditative contemplation, giving Lee time to sit and reflect on these past events.\r\n\r\nThrough Lee\u2019s lens, they capture the visual manifestations of the ghosts of the past. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Welles was a teenager, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife, Paola Mori.\u00a0\r\n\r\nIt should be noted that Welles\u2019s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages, including the\u00a0Welles-Feder Collection\u00a0and the\u00a0Wilson-Welles Collection. In recent work, we study, using knowledge graphs, sentiment analysis, and natural language processing, how online hate speech and public sentiment evolves for different marginalized groups, and how this leads to hate crimes and reactions that is different between e.g. Black Vs LGBTQ+ groups.\r\n\r\nNext, in order to investigate this more rigorously I introduce a new mathematical model of opinion dynamics, which (unlike previous models) captures phenomena such as temporary consensus (eventually falling out of consensus) and opinion crossing.\u00a0Human behaviour (e.g. masking vs not masking) is also tied to health outcomes and disease spreading.\u00a0\r\n\r\nI will use these ideas and heterogeneous behaviour, symptoms, and genes, to present a new method in multilayer networks for early and personalized prediction of disease subtype with remarkable success in prediction of Parkinson's subtype five years in advance.\r\n\r\nHuman opinions evolve, and lead to changing alliances, behavior, and outcomes. Higher order networks such as simplicial complexes (where more than two people interact simultaneously) are particularly useful in capturing properties of higher-order human interaction effectively. I will present theory of simplicial complexes and then some applications on (a) studying strategies and influence in passing of bills in Congress, and (b) the privilege of structural position in coauthorship network on hiring using graph neural networks.\u00a0\r\n\r\nLastly, I will discuss topics in explainable machine learning, especially for prediction on graphs. Machine learning is tremendously successful but often a black box. Here, I will present some recent rigorous results on understanding what precisely are the weight dynamics in the graph neural network during 'learning', where we show how properties of the graph (the spectrum of the Laplacian) plays a role in training. I will also briefly discuss work on more 'biological' ways of training machine learning models of cognition.\u00a0\r\n\r\n*Bio:\u00a0*\r\nSanjukta's research interests are multidisciplinary, with the goal of developing tools to answer questions about real world systems. Of the myriad of lipids that accumulate, sphingolipids such as ceramides may be among the most deleterious, as they alter metabolic programs and induce apoptosis and fibrosis. \r\n\r\nIn humans, serum ceramides are strong biomarkers of diabetes and major adverse cardiac events, and clinics have started measuring circulating ceramides as markers of disease risk. In rodents, inhibiting ceramide biosynthesis ameliorates diabetes, steatohepatitis, and heart failure. Summers will discuss the therapeutic potential of a new approach to inactivate ceramides and combat these metabolic pathologies.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker:\r\nScott Summers, Ph.D.\r\nDistinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology; Co-Director, Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center, University of Utah\r\n\r\nScott Summers, Ph.D., has been a leading voice advancing the idea that ceramides, which are products of fat and protein metabolism that accrue in dyslipidemia or inflammation, contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications in the heart, liver, gut and kidney. Although the idea was initially controversial, the role of ceramides as drivers of pathology is now widely accepted and clinics have started measuring ceramides as a means of assessing disease risk. In 2015, he co-founded Centaurus Therapeutics, a USA-based biotechnology company that is developing new ceramide-lowering therapeutics to combat the metabolic underpinnings of metabolic disorders. \r\n\r\nPrior to joining the University of Utah, Summers held faculty appointments at Duke University and its affiliated medical school in Singapore (Duke-NUS); the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia; and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Students received one or two email-based nudges for each assignment, providing both decision information and decision assistance. Delivered via email by a digital coaching system that provides tailored support to students, we evaluated the effectiveness of viewing versus not viewing these personalized nudges across introductory courses in mathematics, computer science, and engineering over five terms at a large, research-intensive university. We find that viewing versus not viewing nudges is significantly related to improved outcomes. Viewing the first of the two-part nudge series is associated with a 3% increase in scores on average. In this talk, I will present my work on imaging through turbid tissues with improved resolution and sensitivity using interferometric techniques and computational algorithms. I will first discuss how quantitative phase imaging (QPI) improves contrast and sensitivity in three-dimensional cellular structures. I will show how the phase information provided by QPI is used to retrieve the intrinsic properties of biological samples. Then, I will present a label-free imaging method using deep learning to achieve confocal-level resolution, sensitivity, and chemical specificity non-destructively on unlabeled specimens. Next, I will present an ongoing project on confocal gradient light interference microscopy for in vivo mouse brain imaging with a comparison to multiphoton imaging. The talk will conclude with a discussion of my future research direction on pushing the limits of label-free optical imaging in deep living systems and artificial intelligence-assisted applications.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nDr. Xi Chen is a postdoctoral associate and K99\/R00 awardee at Cornell University in Prof. Chris Xu\u2019s group. She previously had postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) in Prof. Gabriel Popescu\u2019s Quantitative Light Imaging lab. She received her Ph.D. in Physics in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Olga Korotkova at the University of Miami. Her research experiences include developing label-free imaging modalities, computational algorithms for studying two-dimensional and three-dimensional cellular structures and clusters, and adaptive optics for multiphoton microscopy. She has 15 peer-reviewed publications, 10 of which are first-author papers in journals including Nature Photonics, Advances in Optics and Photonics, and Light: Science & Applications.
