Known as Polskie szk\u0142o artystyczne (Polish art glass), the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \r\n\r\nThe collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krak\u00f3w. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\r\n\r\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Nour Ballout\u2019s practice grapples with the ways looking can manifest as both resistance and violence while negotiating the tensions among visibility, documentation and surveillance. Through photography, archive and space making, their work interrogates the ways the naturalization of structures of power manifest within bodies, built environments, and communities.\r\n\r\nNour currently serves on the Detroit Institute of Arts contemporary arts advisory group. They are the recipient of many awards, fellowships and grants that include the 2023 Modern Ancient Brown Fellowship, the ICI EXPO Curatorial Research Fellowship, the 2022 Michigan Arts and Cultural Council Grant, the 2021 Transforming Power Fund Grant, the 2019 Knight Arts Challenge Award, Kresge Arts in Detroit Gilda Award and many more. The process of crafting these miniatures becomes a meditative contemplation, giving Lee time to sit and reflect on these past events.\r\n\r\nThrough Lee\u2019s lens, they capture the visual manifestations of the ghosts of the past. However, existing methods such as quantile regression typically fall short for high-dimensional response variables, such as spatial fields of climate variables. To address this, distributional learning aims to estimate a generative model to describe the target distribution, which enables inference by sampling. In this talk, we introduce a distributional learning method called engression. We discuss the potential of distributional learning for problems that persist even with access to the population of the training data, including extrapolation, distribution shifts, and causal inference. Specifically, we demonstrate that the reliability of engression does not break down immediately at the boundary of the training support, in contrast to neural network regression or tree ensembles. In addition, we present variants of engression for multi-environment data or under an instrumental variable setting to achieve robust prediction against distribution shifts and causal effect estimation. Engression has also been shown to be effective in modeling distributions of high-dimensional climate data. She is also a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of Race, Gender & Class (RGC), at the University of Johannesburg. \r\n\r\nSharpe is the author of *Monstrous Intimacies: Making Post-Slavery Subjects* (Duke 2010) and *In the Wake: On Blackness and Being* (Duke 2016).* In the Wake* was named by the *Guardian* and *The Walrus* as one of the best books of 2016 and was a nonfiction finalist for the Hurston\/Wright Legacy Award Her third book *Ordinary Notes* was published in April 2023 by Knopf (Canada), FSG (USA), and Daunt (UK). \r\n\r\n\u201cThe abacus of her eyelids,\u201d her critical introduction to *Nomenclature: New and Collected Poems of Dionne Brand* was published in August 2022. Whereas some couples faltered under the pressure of balancing work and family during the height of the pandemic, others thrived. Shaping these experiences was the widespread adoption of remote work which gave rise to various possible work from home configurations among couples. Further, the closures of daycare centers and schools created added strain on the lives of dual-earning couples with young children. This presentation is two-fold. First, using survey data from August 2020-March 2021 with both members of 343 heterosexual, dual-earning U.S. couples, I examine whether the extent of remote work at home distinctly affects men and women\u2019s own behavioral work-family conflict, and how this crosses over to their partner\u2019s behavioral work-family conflict. I also discuss if the actor and partner effects vary for parents and childfree couples. Most work-family conflict research uses perceptual scales to measure effects of time, energy, strain, and behavior (e.g., Carlson et al. 2000; Greenhaus et al. 2006; Netemeyer et al. 1996). However, long-standing perceptual measures have not distinguished \u201cbetween subjective and behavioral role conflict\u201d (Clark et al. 2019: 40). This study provides a unique opportunity to analyze specific instances of work-family conflict (e.g., less engaged, less attentive, frustrated, or short-tempered with family or co-workers), regardless of expected behaviors in either domain. Second, using interview data from 37 dyads (subset of survey dyads), I provide a phenomenological account of how the couples made sense of their pandemic work\/family experiences. Using data from both spouses, an inductive account of what work-family conflict \"looked\" like in the family reveals that some view it as compartmentalized and others as unified. Others framed managing work-family conflict either as heroes, responding to a serious, often unexpected situation that requires immediate reaction or a victim, which involves or results in someone or something adversely affected by an external force or agent. Those couples that are emotionally close seem to work together as a team and communicate about their needs. Those that are emotionally distant couples seem to value work above family, leaving each spouse to cope on their own. The second algorithm is \"randomly pivoted Cholesky decomposition\", which iteratively samples columns from a positive semidefinite matrix using a novelty metric and reconstructs the matrix from the randomly selected columns. Ultimately, both algorithms furnish a randomized approximation of an N x N matrix with a reduced rank k << N, which enables fast inversion or singular value decomposition at a cost of O(N k^2) operations. The speed-up factor from N^3 to N k^2 operations can be 3 million. Some of the most poorly understood ecosystems are subsurface sedimentary environments and ultra-deep trenches, particularly as it pertains to the distribution of novel microbial lineages and their associated metabolic abilities. In this presentation, I will share an two examples of work that has advance our understanding of the distribution and metabolic potential of novel microbial lineages, such as those that are part of the Candidate Phyla Radiation, and archaeal lineages such as Bathyarchaea and Asgard archaea Superphylum.
