The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \r\n\r\nThe collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krak\u00f3w. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Candid and relaxed more than posed, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\r\n\r\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library\u2019s Special Collections Research Center, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Welles was a teenager, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife, Paola Mori.\u00a0\r\n\r\nIt should be noted that Welles\u2019s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages, including the\u00a0Welles-Feder Collection\u00a0and the\u00a0Wilson-Welles Collection. This dissertation tries to bridge the gap between single and multi-agent tasks through the development of a hierarchical multi-agent feedback planning system. This framework contains several key components: a task allocation planner responsible for forming agent teams and planning routes and schedules; a trajectory planner that ensures coordinated movements among agents; and a learning model that estimates agent capabilities and task requirements to provide feedback for updating the plans. It runs in pre-execution and real-time and applies both proactive and reactive methods to generate robust plans under uncertainty. Check our events page for more Tuesday seminars! \r\n\r\nAbout: A long fossil record offers unique insights into ecological and evolutionary properties and processes of biotas beyond what we can discover in present-day ecosystems. I will summarize collaborative research on the continental \u201cSiwalik\u201d fossil record of Pakistan, resulting from the rising Himalaya Mountains for over 20 million years. We documented changes over time in vertebrate diversity in relation to regional environmental change in order to evaluate processes shaping different aspects of ecosystem composition. Geological, climatic, and biotic processes all contributed to major changes in vertebrate diversity over time.\r\n\r\n\r\nDid you miss an event? A reception will immediately follow the talk. \r\n\r\nSince its integration into higher education in the late 18th century, engineering education has undergone significant change, spurred by professional societies, funding agencies, and accreditation bodies. In this presentation, I will reflect on transformations in the engineering education landscape I have observed over the past two decades and highlight some of my research group\u2019s contributions to this space. Specifically, I will touch on advancements in faculty development initiatives, pedagogy and instruction, the integration of sociotechnical issues into the curriculum, and support for a diverse student body in engineering. Collectively, these advancements have instilled a culture of inclusive teaching and learning at UM and beyond.\r\n\r\nBio\r\n\r\nCynthia J. Finelli is Professor of EECS (with a courtesy appointment in Education) as well as Director and Graduate Chair of Engineering Education Research (EER) at UM. She is the first UM tenure-line engineering faculty member hired under the College\u2019s EER initiative, and she helped develop the College of Engineering\u2019s EER graduate program. Dr. Finelli\u2019s research focuses on learning and teaching at the undergraduate level, and she currently studies faculty adoption of evidence-based teaching, academic success of STEM college students with neurodiversities, and social responsibility among undergraduate engineers. She is also known for her research on engineering students\u2019 ethical development and her efforts to create a taxonomy for EER, which is still in use by the leading journals in the field.\r\n\r\nShe is a Fellow of both IEEE and the American Society of Engineering Education, and she has received several awards, including the Trudy Huebner Service Excellence Award, the Department\u2019s Outstanding Achievement Award, and multiple best paper awards. In addition, Dr. Finelli has published more than 200 journal and conference papers, has served on the editorial board of leading journals in EER, and has had several national and international leadership roles.\r\n\r\nShe founded the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching in Engineering at UM in 2003 and was director for 12 years. First, we discuss a phase retrieval problem which is not uniformly stable. This non-linear inverse problem cannot be tackled by classical regularization and we highlight possible connections between uniqueness and stability of this problem. Next, we take a look at robustness through the lens of adversarial attacks both for image classification and image reconstruction. While it is known that successful attacks can be designed for data-driven methods, we find that also classical regularization methods can be adversarially attacked.\r\n\r\nThe last part of the talk is devoted to operator learning and its stability with respect to discretizations. The conventional approach to silicon-based materials is \u201ctop-down\u201d: in a high-temperature process sand (SiO2) is converted to silicon (Si) ingots, which is carved down to smaller components. This process only accesses the most thermodynamically stable form of silicon, leaving uncovered vast swaths of structure-function space. Can we instead build silicon from the bottom-up, atom-by-atom? Our approach realizes otherwise unknown structures and compositions. Inspired by the cyclic subunits embedded within crystalline silicon, we envisioned that cyclosilane \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d functionalized at distinct sites with reactive groups (e.g., SiH2) could be elaborated via dehydrogenative coupling to the poly(cyclosilane)s, a new polymeric form of an essential semiconductor. We have realized unprecedented levels of stereochemical and architectural control of structure, from which structure-based control of light absorption has emerged.
