SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Take Your Time: A Fireside Chat with artist Enrico Riley
DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. By contrast\, his new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world.\n\nToday\, join us for an informal conversation with artist Enrico Riley about his artistic practice and his latest body of work. He'll be joined by Detroit artist and educator Anita Bates\, with music provided by Efé Bes. \n\nFor details on Enrico Riley's exhibition Take Your Time\, visit https://myumi.ch/Jpmkg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Silvia Newell
DESCRIPTION:Wetlands perform critical ecosystem services\, including nutrient reduction\, flood mitigation\, and biodiversity habitat. More than 90% of wetlands in Ohio have been destroyed and most major water bodies in the state now experience annual harmful cyanobacterial blooms. The H2Ohio Initiative in part funds statewide wetland restoration to improve water quality through nutrient reduction. Dr. Newell is one of the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program leads\, monitoring water quality at newly constructed wetland or restored wetlands. This talk will focus on nutrient reductions at two wetlands: Brooks Park flowing into Buckeye Lake\, a hypereutrophic lake experiencing annual harmful algal blooms. Brooks Park wetland was built at the junction of Murphy’s Run creek into Buckeye Lake\, draining a very small watershed (1.2 sq. miles) and behaves as either a flow-through wetland or a coastal wetland depending on precipitation. Preliminary data from the first year of monitoring indicates that the wetland is a sink for total nitrogen (>3000 lbs/yr)\, but a small source of ammonium (~44 lbs/yr). However\, the wetland is a very small source of total phosphorus (~42 lbs/yr)\, while a sink for soluble reactive phosphorus (~16 lbs/yr). The 90-acre Burntwood-Langenkamp Wetland Conservation Area is located at the confluence of Burntwood and Coldwater Creeks in Mercer County. This site is a former corn/soybean field in the Grand Lake Saint Marys watershed. Water enters the site from Burntwood Creek (BWC) through pump and overflow and then flows through a series of settling ponds and vegetated flats that extend for over a mile. BWC drains approximately 5\,700 acres of watershed land and can hold approximately 20 million gallons of water. Total Nitrogen (TN) concentrations at the outflow are approximately 73% lower than the TN inflow concentrations\, which average over 16.3 mg N/L for the year 2023. An approximate annual decrease thus far of ~55% in SRP concentration has been seen between the inflow and outflow with outflow concentrations averaging 0.044 mg P/L. Nutrient load reduction will likely vary as the wetlands mature\, but data from the first year indicate that both wetlands are already performing a vital ecosystem service.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - Using Synergies Between Survey Statistics and Causal Inference to Improve Transportability of Clinical Trials
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS Seminar Series\nJanuary 17\, 2024\n12:00 - 1:00 pm\nIn person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research\, and via Zoom. The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nUsing Synergies Between Survey Statistics and Causal Inference to Improve Transportability of Clinical Trials\n\nMedical researchers have understood for many years that treatment effect estimates obtained from a randomized clinical trial (RCT) -- termed efficacy'' -- can differ from those obtained in a general population -- termed effectiveness''. Only in the past decade has extensive work begun in the statistical literature to bridge this gap using formal quantitative methods. As noted by Rod Little in a letter to the editor in the New Yorker ...randomization in randomized clinical trials concerns the allocation of the treatment\, not the selection of individuals for the study. The latter can have an important impact on the average size of a treatment effect\,'' with RCT samples often designed\, sometimes explicitly\, to be more likely to include individuals for whom the treatment may be more effective.\n\nThis issue has been various termed generalizability'' or transportability.\" Why do we care about transportability? In RCTs we are in the happy situation were treatment assignment is randomized\, so confounding due to either observed or unobserved (pre-treatment) covariates is not an issue. But while randomization of treatment eliminates the effect of unobserved confounders\, at least net of non-compliance\, it does not eliminate the effect of unobserved effect modifiers\, which can impact the causal effect of treatment in a population that differs from the RCT sample population. The impact of these interactions on the marginal effect of treatment thus can differ between the RCT population and the final population of interest.\n\nConcurrent with research into transportability has been research into making population inference from non-probability samples. There is a close overlap between these two approaches\, particularly with respect to the non-probability inference methods that rely on information from a relevant probability sample of the target population to reduce selection bias effects. When there are relevant censuses or probability samples of the target patient population of interest\, these methods can be adapted to transport information from the RCT to the patient population. Because the RCT setting focuses on causal inference\, this adaptation involves extensions to estimate counterfactuals. Thus approaches that treat population inference as a missing data problem are a natural fit to connect these two strands of methodological innovation.\n\nIn particular\, we propose to extend a pseudo-weighting'' methodology from other non-probability settings to a doubly robust'' estimator that treats sampling probabilities or weights as regression covariates to achieve consistent estimation of population quantities. We explore our proposed approach and compare with some standard existing methods in a simulation study to assess the effectiveness of the approach under differing degrees of selection bias and model misspecification\, and compare it with results obtained using the RT data only and with existing methods that use inverse probability weights. We apply it to a study of pulmonary artery catheterization in critically ill patients where we believe differences between the trial sample and the larger population might impact overall estimates of treatment effects.

Inasmuch as biodiversity is critical in maintaining delicate balances within and across ecosystems that ensure survival\, diversity as a core element of excellence enhances the respective communities from which individuals come\, but more importantly\, it enhances the larger human condition. Despite substantive evidence of the myriad benefits of diversity\, there are concerted efforts to delegitimize Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) progress through anti-DEI legislation at the local\, state\, and federal levels. The sociopolitical climate has a chilling atmosphere\, which suggests DEI is antithetical to free thought\, freedom of speech\, and meritocracy. \n\nCentral to the mission of higher education is critical inquiry\, knowledge production\, and problem-solving\, which are critical to the continued advancement of society. As such\, if higher education is to be a vehicle whereby we interrogate and address complex issues\, it is important to recognize that our excellence as an institution is dependent upon diverse perspectives and ideas in order to achieve the collective and intended impact. Though it can be difficult to construct a shared meaning\, innovative solutions often come as a result of contributions from diverse viewpoints (Sun et al.\, 2016). Further\, in recognizing that diverse perspectives and ideas are necessary for the advancement and vitality of our society\, we must also acknowledge that diverse viewpoints are a function of and connected to the lived experiences of individuals and their respective identities that shape the way they come to know and understand the world. \n\nThrough this discussion\, panelists will draw upon their expertise and experience as scholars and practitioners to offer counternarratives and frame the essentiality of diversity to our collective understanding of what excellence encompasses.\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nElizabeth R. Cole — Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity\; University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor\; and Professor of Women's and Gender Studies\, Psychology\, and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan\n\nCarson Byrd — Associate Research Scientist in the Center for the Study of Higher & Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan\n\nMitchell Chang — Interim Vice Provost of Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion\; Professor of Education and Asian American Studies at the University of California\, Los Angeles\n\nRobin Means-Coleman — Professor of Media Studies and Professor in the Carter G. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Using High Energy Density Plasmas for Nuclear Experiments Relevant to Nuclear Astrophysics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThermonuclear reaction rates and nuclear processes have traditionally been explored by means of accelerator experiments\, which are difficult to execute at conditions relevant to stellar or big bang nucleosynthesis. High energy density (HED) plasmas generated using lasers\, such as the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) platforms at the NIF and OMEGA facilities\, more closely mimic astrophysical environments in several ways. These include thermal distributions of reacting ions as opposed to mono-energetic ions impinging on a cold target\; stellar-relevant plasma temperatures and densities\; and neutron flux densities not found elsewhere on earth. This talk will present some initial nuclear astrophysics-relevant results for the T+T and solar 3He+3He reactions using this platform to illustrate the possibilities\, and describe efforts to study the 3He+3He reaction at stellar-relevant conditions at NIF and with unprecedented data quality at OMEGA. Future directions\, including platform developments to study CNO-cycle-relevant reactions including higher Z ions\, neutron capture on nuclei in excited states and electron screening will also be discussed. The work was supported in part by the US DOE\, LLE\, and LLNL.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Maria Gatu Johnson is a principal research scientist at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center\, where she develops and uses nuclear diagnostics to diagnose inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. In particular\, she has focused her efforts on working to understand stagnation physics in ICF implosions\, helping guide the ICF program at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to ignition and energy gain and the program at the OMEGA laser facility to record yields. Another primary focus of her work is plasma nuclear science-relevant basic-science experiments at OMEGA and the NIF. She also manages an accelerator laboratory at MIT dedicated to diagnostic development for ICF and high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments. She obtained her PhD from Uppsala University\, Sweden\, in 2010\, working on neutron di-agnostics for the JET tokamak. She is the recipient of awards including the 2019 Katherine E Weimer Award\, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. She is proud to be an APS DPP Ally since 2019.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. For Zoom link\, please see MIPSE website:\nhttps://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2324.php#winter2024

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Large Deviations for Empirical Measures of Self-Interacting Markov Chains.
DESCRIPTION:Let $\Delta^o$ be a finite set and\, for each probability measure $m$ on $\Delta^o$\, let $G(m)$ be a transition kernel on $\Delta^o$. Consider the sequence $\{X_n\}$ of $\Delta^o$-valued random variables such that\, and given $X_0\,\ldots\,X_n$\, the conditional distribution of $X_{n+1}$ is $G(L^{n+1})(X_n\,\cdot)$\, where $L^{n+1}=\frac{1}{n+1}\sum_{i=0}^{n}\delta_{X_i}$. Under conditions on $G$ we establish a large deviation principle for the sequence $\{L^n\}$. As one application of this result we obtain large deviation asymptotics for the Aldous-Flannery-Palacios (1988) approximation scheme for quasi-stationary distributions of finite state Markov chains. The conditions on $G$ cover other models as well\, including certain models with edge or vertex reinforcement.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG GeomTopDyn: Measure rigidity theorems in smooth dynamics.
DESCRIPTION:Classifying the invariant measures for a given dynamical system is a fundamental problem.\n\nIn the field of homogeneous dynamics\, several important theorems give us an essentially complete picture.Moving away from homogeneous dynamics — results are scarcer\, mainly due to some profound difficulties carrying out the techniques used in homogeneous dynamics.\n\nA recent development in Teichmuller dynamics — the celebrated magic wand theorem of Eskin–Mirzakhani\, gives one such example and actually provides a technique — the factorization method — for proving such results in certain systems.\n\nI will explain how one can implement the factorization method of Eskin–Mirzakhani in smooth dynamics\, in order to achieve measure classification of u-Gibbs states for non-integrable Anosov actions. Moreover\, I will try to explain some applications of the theorem\, including a result of Avila–Crovosier–Eskin–Potrie–Wilkinson–Zhang towards Gogolev’s conjecture on actions on the 3D torus.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Winter 2024 MEMS Lecture. Mass Expulsion in Medieval Europe
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in the twelfth century\, Jewish moneylenders increasingly found themselves in the crosshairs of European authorities\, who denounced the evils of usury as they expelled Jews from their lands. Yet Jews were not alone in supplying coin and credit to needy borrowers. Across much of Western Europe\, foreign Christians likewise engaged in professional moneylending\, and they too faced repeated threats of expulsion from the communities in which they settled. In charting the emergence and spread of this association between usury and expulsion\, this talk will explore how mass expulsion became a pervasive feature of European law and politics—with tragic consequences that have reverberated down to the present.\n\nBio: Rowan Dorin is associate professor of History at Stanford University\, where his teaching and research focus on premodern Europe and the Mediterranean. He holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of Cambridge\, and he was previously a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows. In addition to his recent book\, No Return: Jews\, Christian Usurers\, and the Spread of Mass Expulsion in Medieval Europe (Princeton UP\, 2023)\, he has also published articles on Jewish-Christian relations\, medieval canon law\, digital humanities\, and the circulation of people\, goods\, and manuscripts in the premodern world.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSAS South Asian Film Series | *Aattam* (*The Play*)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our third film in our South Asian Film Series\, award-winning Attam (The Play)\, in partnership with the historic Michigan Theater. The screening is free and open to the public.\n \n See the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UczdNpVB1I\n \nFree tickets are available at https://myumi.ch/73yGj\n\nFrom the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles:\n \n On the face of it\, the Arangu theater group looks like a safe space for a woman. Its sole actress\, Anjali\, appears to enjoy a forthright camaraderie with the rest of the twelve male members. Things are put to a test when one of the members gropes Anjali during a celebratory night out. When her partner and fellow actor Vinay finds out\, he calls for a group meeting to decide on the expulsion of the accused. As doubts grow and skeletons come tumbling out\, things quickly descend into chaos\, with none of the men coming off with flying colors.\n \n In his debut feature film\, Anand Ekarshi\, deftly deals with a critical feminist issue\, but from the flip side. Instead of foregrounding the act of violation against the woman\, he trains his camera on how men try to take control of the narrative in the aftermath of an offense. Ekarshi scripts Aattam like a chamber drama\, builds the tension bit by bit to a taut\, riveting cliffhanger of a climax. Having started his own creative journey on stage\, Ekarshi draws from the world of theater and performance arts. The strong\, finely tuned ensemble is led by young emerging star Zarin Shihab (The Family Man) and popular names like Vinay Forrt (Premam\, Thamasha) and Kalabhavan Shajohn (Drishyam\, Lucifer). Aattam is not just an authentic portrayal of patriarchy but also a stinging dissection and critique of toxicity and male entitlement.\n \n Anand Ekarshi is a filmmaker from Kerala\, India. His interest in theater and acting began at the age of 10 and grew with time into a passion for filmmaking. He credits his roots in storytelling to his time with Lokadharmi\, a Kochi-based theater group where he was a part of numerous performances across India for over a decade. His recent projects include Malayalam short films\, music videos\, and a short stint under acclaimed filmmaker Imitaz Ali. A graduate in communicative English and a post-graduate in psychology\, Anand finds inspiration for his narratives in the complexities of the human mind. Aattam (The Play) is his feature debut.\n \n *Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*\n\n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:G. Love & Special Sauce 30th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:A free-spirited Philadelphia mix\n\nBorn Garrett Dutton in Philadelphia\, PA\, G. Love grew up equally enthralled with folk\, blues\, and rap\, devouring everything from Lead Belly and Run D.M.C. to John Hammond and the Beastie Boys. After migrating to Boston\, he and his band\, Special Sauce\, broke out in 1994 with their Gold-selling self-titled debut\, which earned widespread critical acclaim for its bold vision and adventurous production. Over the next twenty-five years\, G. Love would go on to release seven more similarly lauded studio studios albums with Special Sauce (plus four solo albums on his own)\, solidifying his place in music history as a genre-bending pioneer with a sound The New York Times described as \"a new and urgent hybrid\" and NPR called a \"musical melting pot.\" G. Love's magnetic stage presence\, meanwhile\, made him a fixture on festival lineups from Bonnaroo to Lollapalooza\, and his relentless appetite for tour and collaboration landed him on the road and in the studio with artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams\, Dave Matthews\, The Avett Brothers\, Jack Johnson\, and DJ Logic. G. Love celebrates his 30th anniversary with his latest album\, “The Juice\,” co-written and co-produced with blues great Keb’ Mo’.\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4463/4464 for more detail.
