SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Time
DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. \"When I am with them\,\" Riley explains\, \"I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Seminar Seminar Series: Lili Zheng\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Rice University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The reliability of machine learning in scientific discoveries and decision-making hinges on the critical role of uncertainty quantification (UQ). In this talk\, I will discuss UQ in two challenging scenarios motivated by scientific and societal applications: selective inference for large-scale graph learning and UQ for model-agnostic machine learning interpretations. Specifically\, the first part concerns graphical model inference when only irregular\, patchwise observations are available\, a common setting in neuroscience\, healthcare\, genomics\, and econometrics. To filter out low-confidence edges due to the irregular measurements\, I will present a novel inference method that quantifies the uneven edgewise uncertainty levels over the graph as well as an FDR control procedure\; this is achieved by carefully disentangling the dependencies across the graph and consequently yields more reliable graph selection. In the second part\, I will discuss the computational and statistical challenges associated with UQ for feature importance of any machine learning model. I will take inspiration from recent advances in conformal inference and utilize an ensemble framework to address these challenges. This leads to an almost computationally free\, assumption-light\, and statistically powerful inference approach for occlusion-based feature importance. For both parts of the talk\, I will highlight the potential applications of my research in science and society as well as how it contributes to more reliable and trustworthy data science.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CREES Co-sponsored Event Series. Queer Focus: Gender and Sexualities in Eastern Europe and Eurasia
DESCRIPTION:Complete series details and registration links at https://myumi.ch/RpDJX\n\nModerator: Emily Channell-Justice\, Director\, Temerty Program on Contemporary Ukraine\, Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute\n\nSpeakers:\n\nSimone Bellezza\, Assistant Professor of Modern History\, Department of Social Sciences\, University of Naples Federico \n\nTamar Shirinian\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology\, University of Tennessee Knoxville \n\nVladislav Beronja\, Assistant Professor of Slavic and Eurasian Studies\, University of Texis at Austin\n\nJasmina Tumbas\, Associate Professor\, Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies\, University of Buffalo\n\nMany efforts have been made over the past several years to diversify Eastern European and Eurasian studies. This new spotlight surfaces research that has been conducted by many scholars for much longer\, highlighting their commitment to telling stories and honoring perspectives of diverse and minority communities. Their work reveals that while there is no unified queer experience in the region\, there is often a one-size-fits all state response to the reality of queer lives in many nations within the region. How can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question\, Queer Focus will have six virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power\, defining the region and how we study it\, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research\, teaching\, and institutional practices.\n\n*Panel 1 of the series will provide a state of the field of queer studies within Eurasia and Eastern Europe.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAF Lab | \"Writing (or not) on Crip Time\"
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend on Zoom: https://myumi.ch/DwEr8\n\nThis roundtable conversation considers what it means to write\, make\, and do (or not!) on crip time. Universities and other institutions typically represent disability through the logics of cost-burden models\, which position disability as antithetical to collegiality\, punctuality\, responsibility\, and often\, life. How might we work against\, crip\, and ultimately dismantle these systems? How might bed rest\, deferrals\, stims\, stutters\, and other embodyminded insights help us generate tactics for survival? How might we think about digital activism and disabled collectivity online in ways that provide us respite rather than distress? How might we collectively reimagine the temporalities of labor\, care\, and composing?\n\nThis event will be held on Zoom. We want to make our events accessible to all participants. CART services will be provided. If you anticipate needing accommodations to participate\, please email Giselle Mills at gimills@umich.edu.\n\nRegister to attend on Zoom: https://myumi.ch/DwEr8

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: The Role of History in Investigative Reporting
DESCRIPTION:It is not news that historians rely on journalists’ accounts nor that journalists often turn to historians’ research for background and context for their own investigative reporting. Since Charlottesville in August 2017\, however\, the urgency of these collaborations has seemed to markedly increase. Beyond signature initiatives like the 1619 Project\, journalists and historians are collaborating in ever more fruitful ways\, whether by working in tandem on investigative reporting\, sharing op-ed pages\, or appearing together on podcasts and other digital media. These projects demonstrate that journalists and historians can work together to produce public knowledge about the past—and hint at new possibilities for new partnerships. In this symposium\, journalists Kat Stafford (Reuters) and Anna Clark (ProPublica) will join historian Stephen A. Berry (University of Michigan) to discuss how journalists investigate the past and what future collaborations might entail.\n\nAnna Clark is an investigative journalist for ProPublica. She is the author of The Poisoned City: Flint’s Water and the American Urban Tragedy\, which won the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism and the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award\, and was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. She also edited A Detroit Anthology and wrote a slim book on the literary history of the Great Lakes State. Anna teaches nonfiction in Alma College’s MFA program in creative writing. She was a Fulbright fellow in Kenya and a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow at the University of Michigan. She graduated from U-M with degrees in history of art and creative writing/literature\, and also from Warren Wilson College's MFA program in creative writing. She has been a longtime leader of writing and improv theater workshops in prisons\, detention centers\, high schools\, libraries\, and beyond. \n\nKat Stafford is the global race and justice editor for Reuters\, where she leads agenda-setting coverage of race\, identity and social justice across the newsroom. Prior to joining Reuters\, Kat was a national investigative race writer and global investigations correspondent at the Associated Press. She has received several awards for her work\, including the National Press Club Journalism Institute's 2023 Neil and Susan Sheehan Award for Investigative Journalism. She was a 2022 University of Michigan Knight-Wallace fellow\, where she published a five-part investigative series examining how health inequities have impacted generations of Black Americans.\n\nStephen A. Berrey is an associate professor in American Culture and History and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. He is the author of The Jim Crow Routine: Everyday Performances of Race\, Civil Rights\, and Segregation in Mississippi. Berrey is director of the Sundown Towns Project and website\, an initiative begun by James Loewen to document places that have intentionally excluded some racial groups. He is also involved with Singing Justice\, a collaborative project of performers and scholars dedicated to centering Black music and Black musicians in American history. \n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Guest Speaker: Dr. Tobias Glossmann
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Advanced Batteries Technology - Opportunities Revisited”\nMercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) works in many areas of engineering and one objective is to understand future battery technologies for electric powertrains. We will take the example of fast charging\, which can be achieved in various ways\, and work through some of the implications on battery chemistry and system construction. We will further discuss how new technology may present advantages beyond fast charging and interesting challenges for future scientists and engineers. Because new technology would not be useful without a matching manufacturing process we will close with the review of a scale-up problem.\n\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/7HGwBRpK121nmpCC8\n\nFood provided

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Visualizing cellular force-sensing through the actin cytoskeleton
DESCRIPTION:In addition to chemical cues\, cells in the body must perceive physical forces at the molecular scale to orchestrate development and maintain homeostasis. Cells probe and respond to the physical properties of their local environments through the actin cytoskeleton\, a network of protein polymers\, motor proteins\, and myriad associated partners. The Alushin lab studies how actin filaments serve as cellular tension sensors\, engaging in force-sensitive binding interactions to transduce mechanical forces into biochemical signals. Different force regimes elicit specific conformational transitions in actin\, suggesting the potential for a mechanical code that is interpreted by binding partners. These mechanical transitions are evoked through mechanisms distinct from standard biochemical regulation\, providing a glimpse at how forces modulate protein structure to regulate function.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Technological advancement and applied psychology research in the new era
DESCRIPTION:Technological advancement has shifted the landscape of work\, workers\, and workplace at the unprecedented speed and scale. The changes can be seen from a positive light\, such that advancement in science and technology resulted in the creation of new jobs and industries\, improvement in productivity and efficiency\, encouragement of wider participation\, and enhancement of worker well-being. However\, these changes also bring on challenges to the existing conception of work\, the human resource and training pipeline\, and skill obsolescence and worker displacement. This talk will discuss how technological advancement may lead to fundamental changes in applied psychology research. At the same time\, knowledge in organizational psychology and organizational behavior can be positioned to inform individual workers\, organizations\, and policy makers to take advantage of the potential opportunities brought on by the technological advancement.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: The Heisenberg limit in quantum algorithms and learning
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Heisenberg limit is a fundamental limit imposed by the principles of quantum mechanics. It provides a lower bound of the amount of resources needed to achieve certain precision in an estimation task. Saturating the Heisenberg limit brings practical benefits to quantum algorithms and learning protocols. In this talk I will present two algorithms that saturate the Heisenberg limit in ground state energy estimation and in Hamiltonian learning respectively. No prior knowledge of quantum mechanics or quantum computing is assumed.\n\nThe seminar will also be broadcast via Zoom at the link https://umich.zoom.us/j/96021646996\n\nMeeting ID: 960 2164 6996\nPasscode: 034405\n\nContact: Shravan Veerapaneni

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics seminar -- Formal geometry of affine Coxeter groups
DESCRIPTION:We study formal regions of infinite Coxeter arrangements\, which can be identified with biclosed subsets of the associated positive root system\, and which are conjectured to be the topes of an oriented matroid on the reflections of the Coxeter group. They organize into a partial order which extends the weak Bruhat order on the group. Recently\, we showed in joint work with David Speyer that this poset is a complete lattice when W is an affine Coxeter group\, resolving a conjecture of Matthew Dyer for these groups. Focusing on the affine symmetric group (type A tilde)\, we show that the completely join-irreducible elements of this lattice correspond to shards of its Coxeter arrangement\, as is known for finite Coxeter groups. We give a combinatorial description of the shards using cyclic non-crossing arc diagrams. We also show these objects biject with certain modules\, called real bricks\, over a type A tilde preprojective algebra\, and discuss the relationship between the extended weak order and the lattice of torsion classes for this algebra.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Averaged null energy and the renormalization group
DESCRIPTION:Averaged null energy\, defined by integrating the null energy over a light ray\, is known to be closely tied to causality in AdS/CFT\, to deformations of the modular Hamiltonian in quantum field theory\, and to the Lorentzian inversion formula in CFT. I will discuss a new connection between averaged null energy and the monotonicity of the renormalization group\, and use the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) to derive the c-theorem in two dimensions and the a-theorem in four dimensions. The derivation is based on contact terms that appear in correlation functions of the light-ray operator. Combined with previous results\, this also gives a new derivation of the c- and a-theorems from the monotonicity of relative entropy\, and hints at a more general role for Lorentzian inversion in non-conformal QFTs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Matt Friedman\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Fossils are essential for understanding the origin of today's environments and biodiversity. Paleontology provides temporal constraints on evolutionary timescales\, information about the structure of ancient organisms\, and evidence of past geographic and environmental distributions of lineages. Ray-finned fishes\, numbering over 30\,000 living species\, make up roughly half of all living species of backboned animals and have a rich fossil record. However\, in comparison to that of their terrestrial cousins\, the remarkable paleontological archives available for ray-finned fishes have been little studied. Fossil evidence bears on several key intervals of ray-finned fish evolution\, many associated with episodes of profound global change. While textbooks depict a singular \"Age of Fishes\" in the Devonian more than 350 million years ago\, ray-finned fishes have undergone many episodes characterized by anatomical innovations\, lineage diversification\, or environmental shifts. This talk highlights how diverse evidence from living and fossil species helps us to understand these Ages of Fishes\, and in turn the origin of today's familiar aquatic environments and ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics MLK Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Professor Quentin Williams is Director of the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR) and an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). \n\nTITLE\nHow we liberate Kaaps: the history and future of a South African ‘language’\n\nABSTRACT \nKaaps (also known as Afrikaaps) is an African ‘language’ that became the slave lingua franca of the indentured indigenous\, enslaved populations and Khoi in the settler Cape Colony. Formed out of Cape Dutch\, it was creolised first through a mixture of (Low and High) Portuguese\, Indonesian (such as Malay\, Singhalese)\, and Khoi phono-/lexical-/syntactic-variations\, and later heavily influenced by Arabic\, standard Afrikaans and English. Since colonialism\, the speakers of this ‘language’ has remained oppressed and only recently have we seen an accelerated effort to develop the necessary linguistic infrastructure (grammars\, digital text collections\, educational materials\, etc.) to liberate and secure the future of Kaaps. \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss the story of the liberation of Kaaps in post-apartheid South Africa. I begin by providing important historical insight into the 17th century life of the first slaves who wrote in Kaaps\, what I term Early Kaaps\, pointing to the creole life and roots of Kaaps at the formation of Cape Dutch from 1652 to 1790. I point to diachronic studies of Kaaps to represent the enslaved voices of early Kaaps speakers. I then move on to the 1800s to demonstrate how with the lead up to the establishment of the Union of South Africa (in 1910) and into apartheid (1945-1989)\, Kaaps is developed in writing as a “tussen taal” (in-between language) and later a ‘language of resistance’. I point out that for much of the 1960s to 1980s\, Kaaps writers came to resist apartheid govermentality and racism by expressing liberation through forms of Kaaps protest writing (amongst other forms of protest and activism). \n\nIn the final part of this talk\, I ask: would the liberation of Kaaps in post-apartheid be achieved through the development of linguistic and educational tools – such as a grammar\, dictionary and bilingual learning materials – and thereby raise the functions of Kaaps in institutional contexts? I answer this question by discussing how recent projects focused on (1) developing a trilingual dictionary of Kaaps\, (2) Kaaps bilingual learning materials\, and (3) considerations for a descriptive grammar\, orthography and standardization of Kaaps are helpful in advancing the empowerment of Kaaps speakers. \n\nI conclude the talk by reflecting on the pitfalls of liberation work for Kaaps and its speakers. I also provide a number of conclusions on whether\, and if it all\, the development of a full Kaaps grammar\, dictionary\, orthography and educational materials are able to successfully challenge the binaries inherent in the remains of ‘colonial and apartheid linguistics’\, including those linguistic fixities\, hegemonies and hierarchies of standardized languages that prevent greater access to linguistic resources and infrastructures for Kaaps speakers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Democratizing Utility Data to Accelerate the Clean Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:In the months and years to come\, the utility industry should anticipate an increasing number of regulatory commissions to begin ruling on third-party access to utility data. Several state orders are currently examining the implications of making utility data more accessible to third parties and customers. Some states are going further and broadening the data pool to include more than just customer-metered end-use data. Whichever position a state may take in democratizing its data\, it should do so in a way which will encourage customer adoption and improve the marketing and sales of distributed energy resources (DER) and other energy solutions to help states reach their net-zero carbon goals. A result of democratizing the grid utility data will open new markets and accelerate innovations that will help states achieve their carbon reduction goals.\n\nJason is a seasoned business development leader responsible for connecting East Coast utilities with our deep industry knowledge and capabilities. In this role\, he applies his extensive consultative sales\, marketing\, and strategy leadership to the energy industry. Jason brings a fresh perspective to Energy & Utilities\, along with wealth of experience gained through 25 years in web marketing and ecommerce. Entrepreneurial\, collaborative\, and open-minded\, his mantra is “never stop learning.” Prior to joining West Monroe\, Jason was co-founder of a travel technology company developing web applications and direct-to-consumer online marketing strategies for leading global hotel brands. Along with West Monroe\, he is a frequent writer and host of Energy Central’s podcast\, Power Perspectives\, bringing in top minds to discuss pressing issues in the energy industry. Jason earned both bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, an MBA from Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business\, and a diploma from the NYU Clean Energy program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Separable homology of graphs and the Whitehead complex
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a 1-complex associated with a finite regular cover of the rose and show that it is connected if and only if the fundamental group of the associated cover is generated by elements in a proper free factor of the free group. When the associated cover represents a characteristic subgroup of the free group\, the complex admits an action of Out(F_n) by isometries. We then explore the coarse geometry of the 1-complex\, showing that every component has infinite diameter\, and that the 1-complex associated with the rose is nonhyperbolic. As corollaries\, we obtain that the Cayley graph of the free group with the infinite generating set consisting of all primitive elements has infinite diameter and is nonhyperbolic.

SUMMARY:Performance:LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum
DESCRIPTION:LaTasha Barnes\, who appeared in Ann Arbor as part of Caleb Teicher’s SW!NG OUT in April 2021\, presents The Jazz Continuum\, a new production centering the prolific artistry of Jazz music and dance as a cornerstone of Black American culture and community.\n\nSupported by a live music ensemble\, including a DJ/Turntablist\, the all-star powerhouse cast of Explorers brings mind-bending musicality\, spectacular athleticism\, and boundless joy to each offering. This interdisciplinary and intergenerational experience investigates the energetic relationships and throughlines from Jazz and Lindy Hop to vibrant contemporary styles such as House\, Hip-Hop\, and more that developed from them. Each offering is also curated to amplify the cultural contributions of the local geographic area to the continuum.\n\nThe Jazz Continuum celebrates music and dances from across the diaspora\, conjuring the spirits of Black dance elders and transporting audiences from Harlem and Cuba to New Orleans and Brazil in its ever-evolving celebration of being\, dance\, and music.

SUMMARY:Performance:Django Reinhardt Birthday Bash
DESCRIPTION:Join Djangophonique and friends in celebrating the Django Reinhardt legacy\, still developing 114 years after his birth\nToo long? Leave off the final clause.\n\nDjangophonique is an award-winning band led by guitar player Andrew Brown. With over a decade of national touring experience\, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style\, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche\, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The core group includes Tyler Rindo on clarinet\, Nick Martin on rhythm guitar\, and Jorian Olk-Szost on upright bass. In 2023\, Djangophonique began collaborating with vocalist Katie Smith\, whose playful charm and soulful delivery channel the mystery and appeal of an unplaceable era of aching and entrancing nostalgia. Djangophonique\, having already achieved the tricky feat of bringing an instrumental style of music to large stages and events\, is excited to reach even broader audiences\, bridge generational gaps\, and find greater musical heights and depths with the addition of Katie's effortlessly light yet deeply expressive voice. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music\, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style\, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4380/4381 for more detail.
