SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Time
DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. \"When I am with them\,\" Riley explains\, \"I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Computational Nonlinear Filtering: A Deep Learning Approach
DESCRIPTION:Given the state of a system is not completely observable\, filtering is concerned with state estimation based on partial observations of the system state. It enjoys many applications in the control of partially observed systems\, target tracking\, signal processing\, statistics\, and financial engineering. Devoted to the conditional distribution or density\, the celebrated results of the Kushner equation and Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation produce nonparametric estimations of the conditional distribution/density. Approximating their solutions will suffer the curse of dimensionality. In this talk\, we first introduce a new filtering algorithm termed deep filtering based on the deep learning framework. Instead of approximating the conditional distribution or density\, we focus on state estimation or conditional mean. We convert the filtering problem to an optimization problem by finding the optimal weights of a deep neural network (DNN). This solves a long-standing (60-year-old) challenging problem in computational nonlinear filtering and has the potential to overcome the curse of dimensionality. Then\, we present our work on deep filtering with adaptive learning rates. Besides updating the parameters of the DNN\, we also update the learning rates adaptively. Our algorithm is a two-time-scale stochastic gradient descent algorithm. The updating of the learning rates is unsupervised learning. We proved the asymptotic results of our algorithm and achieved error bounds for the parameters of the neural network. Finally\, we will present some numerical examples to show the efficiency and robustness of our algorithm. This is based on joint work with Prof. George Yin and Prof. Qing Zhang.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Homological stability for Hurwitz spaces
DESCRIPTION:Let G be a finite group and c a conjugacy class of G. Hurwitz spaces are certain spaces built out of the unordered configuration space of the plane and (G\, c). I will talk about work of Ellenberg—Venkatesh—Westerland\, where they prove that the homology of these spaces stabilize in certain cases. Time permitting\, I will also talk about how they apply this stability result to say something about a heuristic in number theory about class groups of quadratic field extensions over the field F_q(t)\, with q=p^n for p an odd prime.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - A Novel Methodology for Improving Applications of Modern Predictive Modeling Tools to Linked Data Sets Subject to Mismatch Error
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nJanuary 24\, 2024\n12:00 - 1:00 EST\n\nIn person\, Room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom. The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nA Novel Methodology for Improving Applications of Modern Predictive Modeling Tools to Linked Data Sets Subject to Mismatch Error\n\nIn recent years\, the rise of social media platforms such as Twitter/X has provided social scientists with a wealth of user-content data\, and there has been renewed interest in the utility of administrative records for increasing survey efficiency. Combining social media data\, administrative records\, and survey data has the potential to produce a comprehensive source of information for social research. These data are often collected from multiple sources and combined by probabilistic record linkage. For the analysis of these linked data files\, advanced machine learning techniques\, such as random forests\, boosting\, and related ensemble methods\, have become essential tools for survey methodologists and data scientists. There is\, however\, a potential pitfall in the widespread application of these techniques to linked data sets that needs more attention. Linkage errors such as mismatch and missed-match errors can distort the true relationships between variables and adversely alter the performance metrics routinely output by predictive modeling techniques\, such as variable importance\, confusion matrices\, RMSE\, etc. Thus\, the actual predictive performance of these machine-learning techniques may not be realized. In this presentation\, I will describe a new general methodology designed to adjust modern predictive modeling techniques for the presence of mismatch errors in linked data sets. The proposed approach\, based on mixture modeling\, is general enough to accommodate various predictive modeling techniques in a unified fashion. I evaluate the performance of the new methodology with simulations implemented in R. I will conclude with recommendations for future work in this area.\n\nBrady T. West is a Research Professor in the Survey Methodology Program\, located within the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research on the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (U-M) campus. He earned his PhD from the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science in 2011. Before that\, he received an MA in Applied Statistics from the U-M Statistics Department in 2002\, being recognized as an Outstanding First-year Applied Masters student\, and a BS in Statistics with Highest Honors and Highest Distinction from the U-M Statistics Department in 2001. His current research interests include the implications of measurement error in auxiliary variables and survey paradata for survey estimation\, selection bias in surveys\, responsive/adaptive survey design\, interviewer effects\, and multilevel regression models for clustered and longitudinal data. He is the lead author of a book comparing different statistical software packages in terms of their mixed-effects modeling procedures (Linear Mixed Models: A Practical Guide using Statistical Software\, Third Edition\, Chapman Hall/CRC Press\, 2022)\, and he is a co-author of a second book entitled Applied Survey Data Analysis (with Steven Heeringa and Pat Berglund)\, the second edition of which was published by CRC Press in June 2017. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2022.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tiffany Ng\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Finding isomorphic superconformal field theories
DESCRIPTION:When do two different looking quantum field theories describe the same physics? This is essentially asking when the quantum field theories are isomorphic. In the case of topological quantum field theories\, there are sometimes a way to determine them via topological invariants. For a superconformal field theory\, what would be the minimal set of “invariants” to determine when they are isomorphic? I will discuss some approaches to this question in the context of superconformal field theories in four and six dimensions. Utilizing 4d class S theories that also admits 6d (1\,0) SCFT origins\, I will explain how a certain class of 4d N=2 SCFTs\, which a priori look like distinct theories\, can be shown to describe the same physics. I will further explain how the 6d (1\,0) origin sheds light on the 3d duality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Counting faces of polytopes using toric topology
DESCRIPTION:There are deep and subtle relations between the numbers of vertices\, edges\, triangles\, and higher dimensional faces of a polytope. The so-called g-theorem makes these precise by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for an integer vector to be counting the faces of a polytope. In this introductory talk\, we'll discuss Stanley's ingenious proof of the g-theorem\, which invokes the topology of algebraic varieties. This will take us into the realm of toric varieties\, where combinatorics and algebraic geometry intertwine. This bird's-eye view will not include hard algebraic geometry—interesting details will be the subjects of future meetings of the learning seminar.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar: p-monomials
DESCRIPTION:Let Z_(p) be the localization of the integers at some prime ideal (p). Polynomial rings or power series rings in n variables have a natural N^n-multigrading given by multidegree in each of the variables. Over a field\, the homogeneous elements under this multigrading are just monomials\, but over Z_(p) the homogeneous elements are \"p-monomials\": the product of a monomial with a power of the prime p. Surprisingly\, many of the nice computational lemmas from the monomial setting can be replicated for p-monomials. I will discuss the properties of p-monomials and show some examples of rings constructed using p-monomials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:U-M Department of Physics Special MLK Colloquium | If I’m not safe\, no body is: science\, power\, and activism in the age of #MeToo
DESCRIPTION:Sexual harassment is more prevalent in academic sciences\, engineering\, and medicine than in any other public sector\, private sector\, or government workplace except for the military. Women’s physical health\, mental health\, and careers continue to suffer as four decades of combating sexual harassment in the academy have yielded little progress. The #MeToo movement raised awareness of sexual harassment as a major contributor to the so-called “leaky pipeline” that drives women out of academic sciences. In this talk\, Professor Gordon will share the narrative of her career path and how her experiences lead to her current activism and founding of Below the Waterline\, an organization devoted to supporting targets of gender harassment in academia. Below the Waterline now works with people with a range of marginalized identities to understand how personal\, collective\, and institutional power can be leveraged to create an academic culture that respects and values individuals.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Spatial-Semantic 3D Robot Perception with Computational Symmetries
DESCRIPTION:Co-Chairs: Maani Ghaffari and Ryan Eustice\n\nRobot localization and mapping is a process where a robot constructs a global spatial model of a scene based on multiple local observations. The primary challenges involve the high degree of noise and outliers within sensor observations\, and the integration of semantic information into actionable insights. In this presentation\, we utilize the tools from the reproducing kernel Hilbert space and the equivariance learning theory\, considering the symmetry of input data. These enable us to formulate two-frame point cloud registration and multi-frame bundle adjustment algorithms that demonstrate robustness against input noise and outliers. Additionally\, this framework can tightly interweave spatial-semantic relationships\, subsequently augmenting various downstream applications like mapping and exploration.\n\nZoom password: rzh

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCAIM Colloquium: On Flows and Diffusions: From the Many-Body Fokker-Planck Equation to Stochastic Interpolants
DESCRIPTION:Given a stochastic differential equation\, its corresponding Fokker-Planck equation is generically intractable to solve because its high dimensionality prohibits the application of standard numerical techniques. In this talk\, I will exploit an analogy between the Fokker-Planck equation and modern generative models from machine learning to develop an algorithm for its solution in high dimension. The method enables the computation of previously intractable quantities of interest\, such as the entropy production rate of active matter systems\, which quantifies the magnitude of nonequilibrium effects. I will then highlight how insight from the Fokker-Planck equation facilitates the development of a new class of generative models known as stochastic interpolants\, which generalize state of the art diffusion models in several key ways that can be leveraged to improve practical performance. Along the way\, I will argue that methods from machine learning offer a compelling solution for many fascinating high-dimensional mathematical problems that are currently out of reach with more traditional computational tools.\n\nTalk will be in-person and on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:GISC Rabbi Elliott T. Spar Politics and Culture in the Muslim World Series. Muslim Women’s Rulings: Issuing Fatwas in Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:RSVP: https://bit.ly/MWRFatwas\n When: Wednesday\, January 24th\, 2024 | 5:00 PM ET\n \n Join University of Michigan visiting scholar from Indonesia Dr. Nor Ismah and the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) on January 24th\, 2024 at 5:00 PM for a talk on “Muslim Women’s Rulings: Issuing Fatwas in Indonesia.” The event is moderated by U-M Professor Daniel Birchok and is part of our GISC Rabbi Elliott T. Spar Politics and Culture in the Muslim World Series.\n \n In this talk\, Dr. Nor Ismah explores the pivotal religious and community roles of Muslim women in Java\, Indonesia\, who assume positions as ulama (scholars) and religious leaders and issue fatwas\, Islamic arbitration decisions. Their fatwas incorporate women's perspectives and traditional and progressive Islamic textual interpretations\, earning them religious authority comparable to male ulama. Despite gender constraints in areas involving authority over men\, women ulama actively challenge male dominance in Islamic scholarship. Dr. Nor Ismah’s work sheds light on the transformative impact of female ulama\, illuminating the nuanced dynamics of gender\, authority\, and knowledge production in contemporary Indonesian Muslim communities at the grassroots and national levels.\n \n This talk is a part of the GISC Rabbi Elliott T. Spar “Politics and Culture in the Muslim World” series. Each talk in the series focuses on a different region or country in the Muslim world that is under-recognized in U.S. discourse on Islam and Muslims.\n \n SPEAKERS:\n \n Nor Ismah is Deputy Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Islam at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Indonesia. She holds a Master’s degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa\, completing her studies in 2012 with the support of the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program. From 2016 to 2023\, she pursued her PhD studies at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS)\, sponsored by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia. Nor Ismah’s research focuses on Islam\, women's knowledge production\, and media. In recognition of her scholarly achievements\, Nor Ismah was awarded the Co2libri Early Career Researcher Fellowship at the Institute of Asian and African Studies\, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2023. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCEE Lecture. Ukraine's Political-Economic Landscape and its Place in Europe
DESCRIPTION:As Ukraine reaches the second anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion\, questions about the war’s trajectory and\, consequently\, the fate of the Ukrainian nation\, weigh heavily on the world's most influential leaders. What happens to Ukraine will impact not just the country and its immediate neighbors\, but the whole of Europe and beyond.\n \n How did a mid-sized Eastern European country become so important for world affairs? What political-economic forces shaped modern Ukraine and how did they help to bring about the current war? What future does Ukraine hold in Europe? Pavlo Kukhta will address these questions with unique insight from his career in Ukrainian policymaking.\n \n Since April 2023\, Pavlo Kukhta has served as advisor to Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister of Reconstruction. In this role\, he assists in structuring reconstruction policies to maximize their economic impact and actively attracts investors to support Ukraine’s recovery. He previously served as Ukraine’s Acting Minister of Economic Development\, Trade\, and Agriculture (2019-2020)\, where he oversaw public sector enterprises and the ministry’s operational management\, and he launched a large privatization program. He also worked as Chief Policy Officer at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) (2020-2022) where he coordinated KSE economic policy projects and led KSE communication efforts with policymakers\, the media\, and the general public. Prior to this\, Kukhta served as Deputy Chairman (Advisor to the Prime Minister) at the Strategic Advisory Group for Support of Ukraine Reforms (SAGSUR) at Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers (2016-2019). Here\, he helped define the economic reforms agenda and priorities for the Prime Minister and Cabinet of Ministers\, including in the spheres of energy policy and corporate governance.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Presentation:Science Café: Policy from the Pulpit? Influences on Climate Change Skepticism
DESCRIPTION:Policy from the Pulpit? Influences on Climate Change Skepticism\n\nWednesday\, January 24\, 2024\n5:30–7:30 p.m.\nConor O'Neill's Traditional Irish Pub\n318 South Main Street\, Ann Arbor\n\nClimate change action is one of the most urgent questions we face. What influences public opinion on this issue? Recent research has shown that religious affiliation is not a consistent predictor for climate change skepticism. The exception to this rule is evangelical protestants who consistently poll as more skeptical than the general population. Do local evangelical ministers fit the trend of this larger demographic\, or is there more to the story? Join Buddy Stark (Ph.D. student with the Mallinson Institute for Science Education at Western Michigan University) to discuss how the belief structures leading to skepticism among evangelicals are more complex than we might predict. We'll consider what approaches might be useful in moving us all forward. Buddy Stark is the planetarium manager at the U-M Museum of Natural History.\n\n\nScience Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting.\n\nHors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.\;\nThe program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early.\n\n \nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When Watergate Changed the World with Garrett M. Graff
DESCRIPTION:In the middle of the night on June 17\, 1972\, five men were arrested and charged with breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex. These men had ties to the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) and\, following their arrest\, officials within the Nixon administration orchestrated a cover-up. The Watergate break-in sparked a series of events that\, over the next 26 months\, would propel an unassuming Midwesterner into the Oval Office. Our nation’s history and Gerald Ford’s life would never be the same.\n\nJoin the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum and Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation as we explore the legacy of Watergate.\n\nGarrett M. Graff\, a distinguished magazine journalist\, bestselling historian\, and regular TV commentator has spent more than a dozen years covering politics\, technology\, and national security. The former editor of POLITICO Magazine and contributor to WIRED and CNN\, Graff is the author of half-dozen books\, including Watergate: A New History\, which was a finalist in 2023 for the Pulitzer Prize in History.\n\nDoors open at 6:30 PM and the program begins at 7:00 PM.\n\nCoffee and Dessert Reception to follow with book sales available.\n\nNo registration required\, but please note that the auditorium seats 200 only and overflow seating in the lobby will be limited.
