SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

SUMMARY:Presentation:Psychology Methods Hour: \"Beyond the cycle: Valid and reliable measurement of ovarian hormone effects in human brain and behavioral research\"
DESCRIPTION:Despite a consistent body of research on the neuroactive effects of reproductive hormones\, and the growing attention given to menstrual cycle studies\, it is difficult to draw general conclusions about the menstrual cycle’s impact on brain and behavior. This is partially due to the lack of systematic methodology and consistent experimental design across studies\, alongside large inter- and intra-individual variability in hormonal patterns. In this Methods Hour\, we will delve into the challenges of researching the human menstrual cycle and take a closer look at hormonal suppression (i.e.\, oral contraceptives) research. Is the menstrual cycle different from other contextual factors (internal and external) that shape the human brain? Is there a correct way of measuring it? How do the biomedical and social sciences benefit from the study of reproductive hormones?

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Time
DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. \"When I am with them\,\" Riley explains\, \"I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Seminar Seminar Series: Guanyang Wang\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, Rutgers University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Monte Carlo methods span a range of disciplines\, drawing interest from statisticians\, computer scientists\, physicists\, among others. In the Monte Carlo workflow\, the upstream task involves designing and analyzing sampling algorithms\, while the downstream task focuses on efficiently using these samples to form estimators. In this talk\, I will discuss recent developments of both aspects. The first part introduces the 'Spectral Telescope' framework for analyzing Gibbs samplers\, and discusses its relationship with the spectral independence technique recently developed in theoretical computer science. The second part focuses on the development of unbiased estimators through the combination of Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Multilevel Monte Carlo methods\, highlighting their potential in parallel computing.

DESCRIPTION:Complete series details and registration links at https://myumi.ch/RpDJX\n\nModerator: Anita Kurimay\, Associate Professor of History and Director of Gender and Sexuality Studies\, Bryn Mawr College\n\nSpeakers:\n\nFeruza Aripova\, Visiting Scholar\, Columbia University\n\nKamil Karczewski\, Fellow\, Institute of Historical Research\, School of Advanced Study\, University College London\n\nIrina Roldugina\, UCIS Postdoctoral Fellow\, University of Pittsburgh\n\nRoman Utkin\, Assistant Professor of Russian\, East European and Eurasian Studies\, Wesleyan University\n\nMany efforts have been made over the past several years to diversify Eastern European and Eurasian studies. This new spotlight surfaces research that has been conducted by many scholars for much longer\, highlighting their commitment to telling stories and honoring perspectives of diverse and minority communities. Their work reveals that while there is no unified queer experience in the region\, there is often a one-size-fits all state response to the reality of queer lives in many nations within the region. \n\nHow can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question\, Queer Focus will have seven virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power\, defining the region and how we study it\, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research\, teaching\, and institutional practices.\n\nPanel 2 of the series will take a historical view of queer studies within the region\, with a special look at the role and availability of archives.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How basic laws of fitness landscapes uncover disease risk genes: Alzheimer’s and other complex diseases
DESCRIPTION:In genetics and evolutionary theory\, the fitness landscape is often used as a metaphor. Here\, instead\, we treat it as a physical entity in which genomes move under mutational displacements. This model enables the definition of an energy term for genome variants\, computable for coding mutations. Surprisingly\, coding variants found in healthy individuals and populations seem to follow elementary laws of thermodynamics. However\, in patients with complex diseases\, a subset of genes carries variants that do not. This divergence in behavior was seen in Alzheimer’s disease\, autism\, and cancer\, each time pointing to genes known to be involved in disease risk\, or likely to\, even when using smaller populations. These findings establish a new and formal bridge between physics\, genetics\, and personalized medicine by way of the fitness landscape.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:It Takes a Village: Craft Specialization at a Late Neolithic (5400-4600BC) Site in Kosova
DESCRIPTION:This talk will present the results of four fieldwork seasons at a newly discovered Late Neolithic site located in Western Kosova. The pilot data suggests that Lluga is a three-hectare village with numerous rectangular wattle and daub houses surrounded by a ditch. Also\, it shows that it was a peripherical village of the Late Vinča culture group—with evidence of various craft production\, a mixed economy\, rituals\, and deliberate house burning. What differentiates it from other contemporary sites is the evidence strongly suggests it was a specialized site for chipped stone tool production\, specifically blades. However\, some questions still need to be addressed- If there was craft specialization\, was it organized at the household or village level? Was production for export or domestic consumption? Did the system of social organization change over time?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: The 3-body problem and a 3-web of Cayley cubics on the 3-sphere
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Finding general solutions to a mechanical system is often far too much to ask. Instead\, we look for more tractable\, special solutions\, such as the equilibria. If the system is symmetric with respect to a group action then we can also look for the relative equilibria\; these are solutions contained to a group orbit. Famous examples include the circular solutions of Euler and Lagrange in the 3-body problem. In this talk I will present a new formalism for finding relative equilibria by defining a 'web structure' on shape space\, and demonstrate this by classifying the relative equilibria for the spherical 3-body problem.\n\nContact: AIM Seminar Organizers

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | The backwards-forwards holographic map for the black hole interior
DESCRIPTION:The black hole information problem describes a tension between the point of view of an observer exterior to a black hole\, who should see it evaporate according to the laws of quantum mechanics\, and an observer who falls in\, who should see nothing special about spacetime as they pass the event horizon. The experience of the infalling observer must be encoded in the fundamental description of the black hole\; such a “holographic map” must be inherently non-isometric. I describe the “backwards-forwards map”\, a candidate holographic map involving the time evolution of both the interior and exterior descriptions as well as post-selection\, in a toy model for a black hole made out of qubits.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Nilsequences as extremal objects in additive combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:We will begin by introducing the use of higher-order Fourier analysis in additive combinatorics for a general audience. In particular\, we will discuss the arithmetic regularity lemma and how it identifies a certain class of arithmetically-structured functions -- nilsequences -- as extremal objects for problems in additive combinatorics. We will then discuss how it has recently come to light that the analysis of nilsequences on certain arithmetic patterns -- those which satisfy a certain algebraic criterion known as the flag condition -- is easier than the general case\, and discuss some recent ideas and developments in overcoming the difficulties that arise when the arithmetic pattern of interest is not flag.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Jonathan Delph\, Purdue University
DESCRIPTION:Spatial correlations between lateral heterogeneity in geophysical\, seismogenic\, and tectonic features is observed along the Cascadia margin. Both the overriding and downgoing plate have been invoked to play the dominant role in controlling along-strike correlations between seismogenic behavior\, potential field measurements\, morphological/tectonic characteristics\, and seismic structure\; however\, significant feedbacks likely exist between the two. Our recent seismic images suggest that zones of basal accretion of material from the downgoing plate to the overriding plate may link the seismogenic\, geological\, and morphological expression of subduction in Cascadia. In the northern and southern portions of the forearc\, this “subcreted”\nmaterial is also characterized by thick (~10 km) anomalously low shear-wave velocity zones. The thickness\, high internal reflectivity\, and low Bouguer gravity signatures likely indicate that this subcreted material is composed of dominantly (meta)sedimentary material that has been emplaced through successive subcretion\nevents over geologic timescales. Furthermore\, the anomalously low velocities and spatial correlation with high non-volcanic tremor (NVT) density and short slow slip recurrence intervals indicate that these regions are fluid-rich. While 1 st order variations in the fluids that control NVT and slow slip likely result from differences in the permeability of the downgoing slab as inferred from its stress state and the distribution of intraslab seismicity\, these subcreted packages likely represent thick\, vertically-impermeable regions in the lower crust that further accentuate this correlation. Variability in the amount of subcretion explains patterns of exhumation and uplift along the Cascadia margin and the resulting forearc topography over geologic timescales\, and is likely controlled by some combination plate interface geometry/rheology and overriding plate architecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency in Nuclear Energy—Let’s talk about waste and accidents
DESCRIPTION:Environmental concerns have been a major hurdle to expanding the use of nuclear energy. More than ten states have laws to restrict new construction of nuclear reactors until a spent fuel disposal plan is developed. In parallel\, the public perception has been significantly impacted by several high-profile accidents\, as well as contaminations at former nuclear weapon production sites in the US. On the other hand\, nuclear communities have been pioneering environmental science and technologies\, establishing environmental impact assessment methodologies\, waste isolation technologies\, and waste/effluent regulations. Nuclear waste management is in stark contrast to the other industries that tend to rely on a ‘dilution-is-the-solution’ approach\, which has resulted in wide-spread contaminations globally.\n\nThis presentation provides the environmental science perspective of nuclear energy with a particular focus on waste management and accidents. I will first talk about the historical overview of waste management\, including past contaminations and the comparison with general hazardous waste. I will then present the multi-disciplinary synthesis of the Fukushima Nuclear Power plant accident with a particular focus on the key factors that exacerbated the consequence. Finally\, I will discuss the potential applications of environmental science and technologies – though informing the public and empowering communities – toward more sustainable and resilient nuclear energy. \n\nBiography: Haruko Wainwright is the Mitsui Career Development Professor in Contemporary Technology\; Assistant Professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering\, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received nuclear engineering in 2006\, MA in statistics in 2010 and PhD in nuclear engineering in 2010 from University of California\, Berkeley. Before joining MIT\, she was a Staff Scientist in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her research focuses on environmental modeling and monitoring technologies with a particular focus on nuclear waste\, and nuclear contamination.
